    You failed to mention that 40000 men from French 1st Army stayed behind and fight to cover the retreat of the British troops. They hold their lines during 5 days against 7 German divisions until that last British soldier was evacuated.

The ship he sailed on was called HMS Grive which got struck by a another British ship, HMS Whitehall, before losing control and sailing into a mine. May he rest in peace now.

      @Artemis Goddess Of Hunting There were hardly any civilians actually involved in the evacuation. The Royal Navy requisitioned privately-owned boats to help in the evacuation, and these were crewed by RN officers and seamen. A few excited civilians joined in but they weren't asked and weren't needed; the government had plenty of trained and armed RN personnel to man the boats instead.

    2:30 the french chose to stay back and hold off the german army as long as they could in order to let the british soldiers leave. When the last one left, they sturrendered.
    Despite the old: 'french surrendering joke", they never really gave up. Most military men went into the resistance or joined allies in african campaign .
    But it really does show, that they were gonna fight to the last man to help the British troops to evacuate

      No Idea one of the reasons ww1 was won by the entente was because britain created a naval blockade on germany and in 1918 the nation was starving cause they couldn’t import food. Plus the royal army had better army high command. And they also decrypted the zimmerman note and brought in the US. the british did the most you just looked at losses and you were like ”clearly Britain didn’t do the most if the french lost twice as many soldiers” the reason for the french losses was poor leadership and an ill equipped army

      The Ardennes offensive was so efficient that the allies were unable to break the German offensive.
      The allies were thinking that no army could invade by the Ardennes, so troops were placed in the north of the Ardennes and on the south. Only few troops were defending the Ardennes.
      This could have been different if the high command would have place troops in the Ardenne.
      But no way, german generals were really smart at this time :D

      How can you talk about the Dunkirk evacuation without talking about the siege of Lille. The battle where 40 000 french fought agaisnt 110 000 German during 4 days, totally surrounded. This battle gives 5 more days to the evacuation and if the french didn't halt the german in Lille, Dunkirk would have been a severe defeat.
      Even Churchill recognize it : « These Frenchmen, under the gallant leadership of general Molinié, had for four critical days contained no less than seven German divisions which otherwise could have joined in the assaults on the Dunkirk perimeter. This was a splendid contribution to the escape of their more fortunate comrades of the BEF » Winston Churchill, The Second World War. vol. II. Their Finest Hour, Cassel & Co

    My great grandad, a British soldier in the 7th armoured division during WW2, fought in france in Dunkirk on the beaches. He was also in a tank. He was in the tank with his friends until it got blown up and killed everyone inside of it apart from my great grandad. He went blind for 3 weeks and went permanently deaf in his left ear. He also went to a concentration camp in Belsen and saved hundreds of People in the camps. One jew gave him a watch as a thank you. When my great grandad died at 97 years old he gave me the watch to remember him.

      Slavic DerpSK well it was their country to defend. The British were simply returning home.

    • @maloflory
      @maloflory 7 лет назад +21

      What he meant was that Frenchs were fighting in the city while most of the Britishs were waiting on the beaches. At the same time, two French divisions were fighting like lions against 7 divisions of Germans ( including 3 elite tanks ones commanded by Rommel ) that were supposed to come as reinforcement for the battle of Dunkirk. At the end of the evacuation, 35k Frenchs were left behind and fought to until being out of ammunitions, to allow 25k more Frenchs to be evacuated the last night, fighting at 1vs10 to 1vs30 and even doing some counter attacks on Germans.
      Also, I think that technically, when you're allied with another country, you're not supposed to run away to protect yourself and leave yourself alone ( even though in the case of ww2 and the geographical situation of the British Isles, I guess it was the smarter choice )

    • @maloflory
      @maloflory 7 лет назад +1

      Of course we're thankful, but there is no reason one side should be thankful to the other and not the invers, you didn't do us a christmas gift by comming to our help, we were allied against the German threat, both fighting to save itself, and a little the other.
      Also, who knows, if you kept neutral, maybe they'd have declared war on you, win the battle of England and occupy you ( remember that your geographical position itself is a threat to them, and that you owned rich colonies...), or they'd have allied you or kept you neutral, win against USSR,occupy Eurasia, Africa, attack and win in America and annihilate you.

    • @maloflory
      @maloflory 7 лет назад +2

      Lewis 565 Well, I didn't say that Britishs were cowards, just said that waiting on the beaches is kinda stupid, and that the fact that Frenchs were ordered to protect the city wasn't a reason to chill on unprotected beaches waiting to embark ( Also, that'd be really stupid from me to say that you were cowards for leaving first, knowing that it's a French general that wanted the Brits to leave first and the Frenchs to protect, while Churchill wanted to evacuate both at the same time ). Also, are you sure that battle of Britain was 1:10 ? I mean, it was only air fights, right ? The Luftwaffe wasn't 10 times stronger, was it ?
      Also, thanks, it goes right to my baguette heart, and I'd add that the British army is definitely one of the best on Earth, and I hope our countries will continue to stick together, and, who knows, take back our thrones on top of the world

      the order to halt the advance into dunkirk was not a direct order from Hitler but his field commanders. the halt wasn't part of some elaborate scheme but just time needed for infantry to catch up and reinforce their armours flanks. there was also worries from counterattacks and Rommel exaggerated the attacks as well.
      also keep in mind that Hitler didn't micromanage his armies till later in the latter parts of the war

      Apparently the reason was because the commander of the attack was being too patient, so the wehrmacht took control of the panzer corps from him, without asking Hitler. Hitler, to show them who's boss, belayed that order. That's what caused the 2 days where they stopped. Although Hitler claimed it was to be "humane" to the brits.

      @Mr.LePhoque Thats not the only reason. Yes the French put up a valiant last stand and an effective defensive perimeter. However, German supply lines became over stretched and their soldiers were exhausted. Goring at that point steps up and tells Hitler not to worry, the Luftwaffe will finish them off. Hitler especially liked this idea because he was paranoid about his generals getting too overconfident and powerful. So the Luftwaffe took over to finish the job but the RAF effectively broke up their raids before they reached Dunkirk, preventing a total annihilation from the air. So yes, the French valiantly played their part, but there were more factors at play than just that. And lets not start trying to draw divisions between the French and British, we fought together valiantly like brothers. People forget that too easily.

      While I agree they're mostly correct they're not always. During their video on knights they said one of the reasons knights became obsolete was because of 'new weapons such as crossbows', which is a little odd seeing as crossbows had existed before knights in various forms.
