Literally an hour before this video has gone live Riot announced they would be updating in game Unbound Thresh to look more like he does in the cinematic. That's what I get for being slow at making videos I guess :( but it does make me hopeful that Riot will continue to do more stuff like this in the future. People deeply care about your characters Riot, listening to them is a very good idea :0 In any case, this video isn't PURELY about just the design of Unbound Thresh so hopefully you fellas can still find some enjoyment out of it :)
Great video nick idk if it worth 2 months of waiting and living with dry hardened bread but, it was a really good video(also when i first saw that skin i was like..... i had no wordsi was confused like mostly everyone else, but when i saw the cinematic i really liked it it was a damn good cinematic and so i watched it 3 more times in a row cause i liked it so much. I hope u will make the video u did last year, like the review of the 2020 champs, i really hope u will make that video sometimes im rewatching it. Thanks nick for making us these great videos.
@sunnyN don't forget the amazing cameo of kassadin stumbling upon the squad on his way to give his daughter some mcdonalds peach pie™ and leaving afterwards to do something more important
Bro Fiddlesticks rework was the best rework league ever made even if you put his lore aside and i don't say that because fiddle is my fav pick now, it's because these are straight facts
fun fact, fiddlestick rework was to me the best visual rework in the history of league so if they make a SINGLE skin of him being sexy anime character, I will personally walk to Riot Games and delete the 10 champions that makes them the most amount of money because they're anime character + the fiddle skin
i mean the image of some sort of naked manikin being twisted into fiddlesticks proportions could look cool, or it would look hilarious, seems like a win/win
You actually make a great point about Viego. Imagine if he was released in 2014 in the middle of all those champions you mentioned. I guarantee you more people would appreciate the subversion of expectations Riot were supposedly going for. But now he's pretty much yet another generic hotboy.
And well i say a game like fable and fable 2 did it better with jack of blades being a skiny guy but still looking evil in away and with lucien ferfax having the same drive as viego where he lost his wife and kid who he loved and went mad with the power he found and the spirel and all he killed and all the evil he did even shoting kids as they had a magic power that could stop him. Lucien just felt more like a ruler then viego
As someone who absolutely despises Viego's design and won't ever shut up about it, I agree with you. The reason I hate Viego so much is bcz I know that Riot didn't make him look like that to break stereotypes. They did it to sell a fuckboy.
I expected him to look more like a Dark Souls boss. But he looks like the main vocalist of an emo band(which is hilarious since his next skin is Pentakill where he's the lead singer in a band)
I mean, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t meant to be a subversion of expectations in any way, just another way to mess up the lore just for the sake of putting hot anime boy once again. Probably if Viego was out in 2014-2017, he’d look a lot more like Kalista or Ledros in LoR, like a ghoul, because in the whole LoR cards, there is no ghoul/wraith that is really human, either it’s a ghost, either a monstrosity
The rumblings I've heard through the grapevine is that Riot did NOT anticipate how much negative backlash the Sentinels event was going to get, which I think goes to show that it's marketing and sales people running the show right now, with writers and artists just trying to do the best they can under the circumstances.
Y’know I just started scrolling into the comments when he brought you up in this video. Nice seeing ya here man! And yeah, that certainly seems to be the case with Riot atm, although my opinions are somewhat easily swayed since I’m mostly an outsider to LoL, playtime-wise.
@@Justin73791 Necrit in his vid cited something from Steve Jobs and basically, you have Idea Guys and Marketers. Idea Guys flesh out this really cool thing people will like because of its execution or uniqueness and Marketers actually make it KNOWN so there is an audience to actually pay for or enjoy it. But marketers are what actually bring in money, so you'll hire more and more of them to help better finance. Eventually leads to a situation with a lot more marketers than Idea Guys, so they can sell or make profits...but they're not actually selling or capitalizing off of GOOD or FUN PRODUCTS and will rehash whatever few new creative things they still make. And some Idea Guysay leave when they realize how much of a backseat they've become.
@@Justin73791 basically think like raid shadow legends. You have a shit ton of people marketing it which is where all the money goes (sponsors, ads etc.) and then you look at the actual game and it’s a pile of flaming shit because they haven’t put any money towards the game.
I'm happy there are more people actually interested in monster champions. I've always liked them and it kind of made me sad that every new champion is exactly what you described. I hope that someday riot will get back to designing more monster champions. They have a special place in my heart.
I’m very anti meta. I hate seeing the same picks every game. While I don’t play some of the harder champions in a way, I’m never gonna play a guy like yone or yasuo because I get annoyed so much by seeing them in game all the time. I gravitate to ones more like Kayle, Nocturne, Tristana, Vi, Diana, Nasus, and Garen cause they all are super fun to play while not being overplayed. If I see a champ appear more often in my game, that makes me less likely to want to pick them up. I’m probably gonna pick up Reksai next just because she’s in that same category of fun champ
@Moonlight he already prove the point man people like what they like (the point is) how Rito games don’t really give a shit about unique and cool ass design when they just selling skin and release way more clusterfuck of sexy anime dudes and babes to get hand to many people as possible (even tho league nowadays didn’t attract new fans anymore because their new design is bland af).
As pessimistic as it is going to sound, the only way we will ever get back to a time where monster champions/characters were a thing... the gaming market will need to crash. I don't want the industry that I grew up with as a kid to go through another market crash that nearly destroyed the medium. However, it will need to go through one in order to weed out the investors, stockholders, and marketers who pretty much have the gaming industry by the balls. Only then can we ever go back to a simpler time where people could create whatever they want without the mighty dollar telling them how it should be made.
I so much agree!! My favourite champion was velkoz 🤩 why don't people like them?? Humans are already boring enough, we play games to dreams a little bit...
I didn't look at League for maybe 3-4 years and got ok one day my friends were playing just to look at the new champs. this was right before Yuumi dropped and all I said was "why do they only make anime characters now?"

the point about the niche playstyles of the monster champs riots deems as "characters audiences don't connect with" is very appreciated. I hadn't really questioned that claim from them, but now that I think about it there are plenty of monster champions with more accessible kits that are super popular.
@@ebilveryebil3091 Because they're right to an extent, and not only right, the logic follows. There's a reason why girls (using girls intentionally instead of women) are memed to only play supports, and not only supports, only enchanter supports. And my personal experience supports it, all the women I met in league played enchanters or if delegated to mid, it's always Ahri, Lux, Kata, all those champs have vastly different playstyles but one key similarity, they're all female. Now, I'm not gonna go on a tirade about how women literally can't relate to anything non female (yes, even rek'sai) but I will say this, what you main MATTERS, and it matters a LOT. Sure, it doesn't apply for 100%, but there are CLEAR guidelines about psychology of people depending on what they main. Now, I will talk only about high elo for couple of reasons. 1. Low elo players don't really ''stick to a champion'' and just move around, rarely truly OTPing a champ. 2. Only way you can stay with a champ for long enough to get to high elo is perserverance and that requires you to both love their design AND gameplay, so it's up to game developer to sell lore/theme of the champ together with gameplay, and they're always praised when they succeed in combining it properly! I've met 3 high elo Rengar OTPs so far, and they're all fucking psychos both in game and IRL. I've met 7(including me) high elo Thresh OTPs and they're all fucking sexual degenerates IRL. I've met 2 Braum and Ornn mains in high elo, and what a surprise, they are wholesome guys. Oh look at that, a female in Diamond 2-1? Of course, it's Soraka main. Exceptions are there, even mentioned in this video, in the ''niche'' argument, but there are certain champs that attract certain types of people, you can't escape that reality. But it's NOT something that affects real life TOO much... for a player... But when you're in charge of biggest game in the world, and you're purely financially driven... you're going to find out that even 3% decrease in champion play rate (and play rate converts into buy skin rate) will make you simply not release monster champs, cause even 3% is giant pile of cash for them (and I can't say for sure since I can't access Riot's stats overall, but my personal feel is that monster champs have about 15-20% less play rate from the start, compared to average good looking 20 something years old, 6 abs, double Ds tits champions).
@@washada Absolutely not sadly, I've only applied my psychology background combined with personal experience playing the game. Sadly, no one would ever even let me do such a research because sadly, getting results such as ''Female gender has far less capability of identifying with a character unless it is a female too'' will never ever be published as result in the West, no matter how thorough the testing is. Just trust me, no matter how much we meme women for being soraka/lulu otps, if she ain't enchanter and/or ahri, lux main on mid, that IS a red flag. Sadly, not all champions have such strong community like Rengar, Thresh, Riven, etc, and since I only apply any data from people who main them, aka over 1000 or 1000s of games on certain champ, obviously people who are ready to invest that much time in a certain champion in a certain game have high possibility, or at least increased possibility of not being mentally adjusted, so I might be only looking at skewed ''who's wrong how'' based on mains and totally ignoring people who, for example, main GP but only play 5 games a month on him. But that's okay for me, rarely I've been interested in ''normies'' (although using that term unironically is cringe).
Thresh reminds me of Ghost Rider so much. Coming from a monster enjoyer, I wish they added more monster champions for adding some variety into the roster
It was announced that Matt Dunn (The writer of Kindred, Pyke, Ornn, Ekko, etc) has been fired along with other god-tier writers that are responsible for the characters and stories that actually made us care about the lore to begin with. It's over Nicky, all hope is lost. It's not going to get better.
At this point Riot are spraying at their own feet with a sub-machine gun, Ekko and Pyke are among League's most popular champions and very well designed characters. Pyke's gameplay pisses me off because he's the prime example of how League breeds selfishness where the "support" is actually an assassin who can easily get pentakills by smashing the R button to pieces but he's a good character in terms of story and design.
Honestly, one thing I'm scared of is Riot makes more humanised skins for the monster champions. Please, Riot. My monster bois are already amazing. They don't need human skins.

Hey Nick, sorry about how the production of this video went. I saw your struggles and doubts with the creation of it, especially after the cinematic dropped, and I wanted to say thanks for putting it out anyway. It was a great video
This. I hope Nicky doesn't get too hung up about releasing videos 'too late' cuz there are always gonna be updates that you can't foresee: the main body of the video is still worth putting out, plus you can always address additional concerns in the description / comments. Good enough really is good enough. :)
The Rise of the Sentinels visual novel feels like it was written by people who's only knowledge of League of Legends was browsing the least funny LoL memes possible.
My interpretation of Arcana Xerath's skin is that this is supposed to resemble how he looked like in life before he went at caused disaster but yeah good design aside (at least in my opinion, the artist did a really great job with the splash art) it's clearly mostly meant for fanservice
I personally think it's just a very sad cheap shot. Thresh is one of the oldest, most iconic, and most played characters in the game. And riot games seems to be selling out one of their coolest and individual characters.
this is why i want more yordles/monsters and why im so hyped for vex's release. when a champ is not just "sexy human" they have to give it a very interesting personality and playstyle to make up for it which ill always take something new over abs and boobs

Viego being a beautiful dude makes sense in his lore context. It's just a shame that he just drops perfectly into the Riot streak of "Hey China loves this stuff, more abs/curves" design logic.

I would like to address a few points in this video to give some insights into this Chinese gaming situation. China took censorship a bit too far. Games meant for underaged audiences could not have words like "kill" or "death" so they instead opted for "defeat". League of legends is rated 16+ over here so all the skeletons and "violent word choices" are mostly unaffected, but for some reason all the red blood effects got censored. Over here we call Vlad and Darius "petrol lords" because their VFX are black instead of red, which is just outright rediculous. The censorship meant for LOR is detailed in this video ruclips.net/video/tlbnuDQnkL0/видео.html, but note that LOR never made it to China for whatever reason. Instead, the censorship applies to Korea and Taiwan and probably a bunch of other countries that share a similar censor philosopy with China. I do not think Xin and Jarvan are popular in China because of their asthetics, but instead, their brain dead gameplay. Chinese players call Tryndamere, Xin and Master Yi "蛮易信", the brain dead trio, and other champs like Jarvan, Morde and Garen are a similar case. They are everywhere in low elo but the higher up the ladder you go, the less you see them. The Chinese server is run by Tencent and they are notoriously known for excessive monetization. Think of their gaming department as the Chinese version of EA, just a lot bigger, and a lot worse. That includes randomly making a new skin "exclusive" or "limited" and selling it for twice the original price, to rigging the rates of Hextech Crafting. Ask any Chinese LOL player and he could tell you how he got Hillybilly Gragas and Deep Sea Kog'Maw out of every single Hextech Chest. Dragon fist Lee Sin is just another example of hungry marketing. Tencent figured out a way to implement GACHA into LOL and this is the only way that dragon fist Lee Sin could be obtained. Most players hate them but some whales are keeping this system afloat. I believe this dragon fist problem improved after the release of Dragonmancer Lee Sin because now nobody gives a fuck about dragon fist anymore, but who knows what Tencent would come up with next time.
Is there really similar censorship in Japan? Plenty of Japanese video games and anime are full of undead stuff, skulls, and blood, and I've never heard of Western games/movies being censored. Look at Jojo-- the only censorship in Jojo is in the West (censoring Jotaro smoking for whatever reason, most of the really gory stuff, and Stroheim's Nazi salute). Hell, Jojo actually pokes fun at East Asian superstitions with Mista, who's deathly fear of the number four is played as comedy.
@@bengrz13 I'll comment on this as well. Although I'm not actually Japanese (yes, so all of this could be wrong. But some of them makes sense to me so I'll write here anyways). I actually looked a lot into Japan in the past in 2016 when I still watched anime to see the reason why anime plots and writings are just so trash that it hurts, much like the sentinels event writing. Basically the Japanese government gave up on anime, manga. They just don't care 1 bit about those stuff, bc most Japanese actually don't like animes/mangas. Don't get me wrong, some of them do watch anime but the anime that Japanese watch are mostly actually kid shows like aggretsuko and anime is actually despised among the people due to them ruining the image of Japanese tradition and rules. For example: There's an anime called wataten, which is the most vile thing ever, a grown woman actually lusting for a fcking child. No matter it is funny or not (which I don't see as funny, it's just gross) it is actually bizzare how this come to be since in Japan, u can't even come in contact or even near the child if you are not their family relatives and the action in the anime is immediately get caught by the police since in Asia in general, there are lots of police stations with many police swarming the streets. And many other traditions like workplace in Japan, education in Japan is just different than anime. And bc now Japan is mostly known through anime, at least online. Many people despised them and the government just don't care about it and let it go however it wants to go. That's why in the anime industry, massive underwage employees and trying to lick the West's boots writers goes rampant made anime what it is (a bunch of nonsense, elementary writing bs) with a few exceptions of actually good animes like Jojo and some others that I forgot the names of I am from Vietnam so more or less, at least in the same Asian part like Japan so at least I can confirm that with the etiquette of being serious about education and morals and stuff like that. Anime is just so plainly wrong that sometimes it is just stupid to think that anime is from Japan, it would make more sense if it's from the West Edit: Forgot conclusion, so the reason why most Japanese video games and anime bs are full of gory stuff is bc Japan mostly stopped caring about them as long as they are shipped outside of Japan, but not "In" Japan. In Japan, those things are actually restricted as most of the bloody games are definitely not really popular and only on PC which is fortunate for the government since most Japanese people don't play PC games anyways, iphones and consoles are the number 1 choices. And there is a superstition of all Japanese like cute stuff, I've actually heard about it too. I don't know if it's true or not, but at least I can confirm that the cute is 'absolutely not cute anime girls" , but more like cute animals like hello kitty and aggretsuko merch Second edit: Sorry for the essay, I'm actually Vietnamese so my English might be bad which is yes in Asia and close in traditions to Japan, China, Korea, Malaysia, etc
Thank you for really diving into the the niche champion angle. I really despise Riot's stance that monstrous champ designs don't resonate when they keep assigning kit's that appeal to a niche playerbase to those champions. It's always been the gameplay ultimately driving popularity. Like you mentioned in the video, Quinn, Illaoi, Yorick, Kayle; their gameplay is not broadly appealing, so regardless of design they are niche. But Riot's really gonna gaslight people into thinking only monstrous champs are niche and that it's because they are monstrous. IMO it's not far from their logic behind Twisted Treeline. They didn't ever work on it because it was more niche, but a lot of people wouldn't play it because it was so poorly balance due to the lack of attention it received.
I loved the shadow isles because of their designs. I was really let down when Viego was released because he didn't really fit design wise for me. I was expecting something more like Mordekaiser since most shadow isles champion looks threatening but I don't get that from Viego.
@Moonlight I’d say Arthas at least was trying to save and then avenge his people until he picked up Frostmourne. He was consumed by his love for his people and his need to be the perfect Prince and Paladin for them. He set standards for himself he could never hope to live up too.
It says something that Fiddle and Volibear's reworks have turned them into some of the more thematically fascinating characters in the game, and they haven't received a skin- or indeed, any attention from Riot- since they were released :/ What happened to all that crazy demonology lore about Fiddle, the first of ten? The epic Ornn vs Volibear kaiju showdown? A skin at least?
Fiddlesticks and Volibear will get a new skin each this year, Volibear's will even have a Prestige edition (perhaps to compensate for being the only champion with no skins that are Epic-tier or greater)
I'm not excited for anything that League has going for it in the future. I'm fine with playing the game because I find it fun and all, but when it comes down to it there's no indication that Riot plans on stopping this homogenized anime design train anytime soon. Sure, Vex has had her champion trailer release and it's the first non-anime character we've had in a while (and her animations are pretty cool), but she feels like the Neeko in between Kai'Sa and Sylas, wherein we'll be getting more of the same later on anyway. If I wanted to play an anime game, I'd go play Danganronpa or Guilty Gear Strive, not League of Legends.
Until we see and hear her lines and more about her and lore hope.it's good since love yordles and overall her design does look rather interesting curious to see how they handle the shadow isles aspect of her character with the shadow and all
Weeell, to be perfectly fair, League of Legends HAS had anime influence right from the beginning, we've got dudes like - Yi (proto Yasuo) - Ezreal (who on release had weird 'whiskers' on his cheeks like Naruto for no reason) - the Kinkou ninjas - Sona (essentially Hatsune Miku ported into the game) - Lux (created by Riot Shurelia, a huge fan of Touhou who made Lux as a reference to Kirisame Marisa of that game) Admittedly they were in the minority at the time, but there was never any doubt that League did, in some degree, pander to weebs - and, in moderation, that's perfectly fine. What I can't stand is how Riot has completely lost any sense of perspective on what made their character design great to chase that weeb/K-pop stan dollar. Anime is not the enemy, the profit incentive is.
I feel like looking back on elder wood Ornn is a great example of everyone still having an interest in monster champs. If monster champions are truly as unpopular at Riot says, then the skin sales would say otherwise. Elderwood Ornn raised more than $7 million in skin sales. Overall, I did somewhat appreciate Riot bringing attention to this, seeing as how they actually are pretty good at taking feedback. I like that they are becoming more broad with how they define champion types. Instead of just having humans and monster, they also have humanoid characters like vastayans and human like animals. And I also like how riot says they want to shift their design more towards non humans champions in the future.
Riddle me this: Lillia skin when? No joke champions released at the same time or after have more than her. But hey guess she isn’t sexy enough for one.
One of my favoueite things used to be to show Thresh to people who have never played league and get them to guess his class/playstyle based on his default splash art. The reactions when I said he was a support were always hilarious.
one of his original appeals was that he was something diferent if you wanted to play suport and use something else than the cutsy anime girl you got the chain warden
Kinda reminds me of that time in certain other Moba when they also took a Skeleton guy who was extremely popular for being badass and goofy and giving zero fucks and also remodeled him into a human form. In my opinion, out of all the generic sexy guy and sexy girl characters, Evelynn is the only champion that doesn't have an issue on being a sexy girl character. Sure, she's a demon so being a sexy girl isn't fitting for that theme, but if you read her lore, you'll know that she's a seductress, using her body as a way of pleasuring her victims before subjecting them into unbearable torment so she really needs that sexy girl body.
Yeah she's s succubus basically. So it makes sense for her. Leblanc is a manipulator, makes sense for her. Ahri was similar to evelyn so she's fine too. Like if you make a few champs that are focused on looks and flesh them out they make for decent and memorable characters.
It's fine to make champions attractive, especially champs whose purpose is seducing enemies (evelynn, ahri). But champs who are literal monsters (except evelynn) that are supposed to be scary? Why do they need to be anime eboys? Viego is a prince, and typical princes are hot. That makes sense. But he got ruined like Heca, Kalista and all that changed is his hair and skin color?

12:34 Exactly my first thought when i read that BS. Yes, blame the champions for not being appealing when their kit is designed for a niche group or is just a clumsy mess from 5y+ ago that wasn't ever addressed properly. Then riot goes and say "But uhhh... X champion isn't a creature, it's a humanoid character, that's why it's played more" yet, surprise surprise, Kha'Zix (the straight up grasshopper/mantis yet they'll likely deny saying he's a humanoid because he's biped) is as popular as Lee Sin, and he is one of the few exceptions of monsters that has a non-niche kit. How silly i am to think Skarner isn't played because he's a scorpion and not because his kit is straight forward and predictable, with an R that doesn't synergyze with the other skills and has a passive that is a full minigame that can make or break him in the match.
Riot is just fucking stupid but when it comes to the reasoning behind their actions. It's always correlation and not causation with them. "this champ has a high win rate so let's nerf them." or "this gamemode isn't popular enough so we're removing it". They never EVER stop and think WHY these things are the way they are.
@@bevvvy1374 If you ever played Legends of Runeterra, do you remember this spring when almost the entire community was raving mad with the Irelia release because of her absolutely bullsht synergy with Azir? Remember how Riot handed over minimal nerfs to cards that were not even win conditions for the deck and tried to shove down our throats that the deck was good, even to the point they explicitly claimed that they liked its play pattern? Or in League of Legends when they "killed" Samira after months of her terrorizing botlane and they just said that "while the champion is balanced, some may find parts of her kit frustrating on lower ELOs" which was basically a nice way of saying "the champ is fine and you guys are bad, we'll still nerf her but shame on you for asking us to nerf her". Or the entire reason behind the existence of the 200 years meme?
@@bevvvy1374 Simple, my point is that it's known for Riot to actually ignore community feedback and just do improper number crunching when it comes to issues.
Simple: sex appeal. Riot's current staff are of a generation who don't understand abstract concepts like "appreciating a character"... they only know: If "fap" then "good design", if "no fap" then "rework". Think of everything wrong with modern Hollywood movies (they behave and think like literal children, hijacking existing concepts and pretending they own them, thinking social media is an accurate reflection of real life) and put those problems into the games industry and you'll understand Riot's current game design direction.
Haha you think this is a generation thing? Like the young designers are the culprit? Oh boy let me tell you about management and marketing and how "creativity" works in indestry.
@@HOVNA Mate, I'm not talking about "sex sells", that's basic marketing a child can understand. I'm talking about the trend of taking existing properties (characters, franchises, etc.) and changing them into something "more acceptable" by giving them a "modern take"... It's not just a question of censorship and marketing; it's because a lot of the up and coming designers in entertainment as a whole are both impatient and creatively bankrupt, so they hijack someone else's work to use as a platform for what they want instead of building up their own work.
@@HOVNA Again, there's a difference between the overgeneralizing of ideas it takes to make that statement true (2nd guy who used a sword in fiction was "unoriginal"... sure, whatever) and literally taking an existing piece of work and changing it to suit themselves while pretending that it's still the unaltered original version.
@@Thescott16 But this is their intellectual property .. they are allowed to do that. It's just done by the marketing team not the designers. That's my point. You don't get to do what YOU want as artist in a huge company. You are there to do what sells. That's the problem. Not some weird "this generation" boomer shit
The best thing the cinematic did for Unbound Thresh (aside from canonically implying it's just a facade to appeal to his victims) is that it's that it gives a better explaination to what it means for him to be "Unbound". He isn't unbound from his monster form, or unbound from his inhumanity, but rather he is unbound from the shadow isles and it's short reach. Thresh is now free to go wherever and do whatever, and no one will know who he is unless they are sentinels. And the possibility of Thresh joining the Black Rose is just... mwah chef's kiss.
I remember reading through some notes prior to WW's rework, and the team stated they did tropey stuff, but always tried to spin it in a way that makes the character stand out. Hecarim isn't just a centaur or an undead knight, he's both; Gnar is a caveman, but he's also a furry and fuzzy little gnome-like creature that hulks out; Shen is a ninja, but he's designed as a tank, and brings some iconic ninja moves into an unexpected role to fill (he can dash, teleport, and strike hard with a blade, but these are played as tank moves). I like Kayn, he's my favourite champion, because he actually answered two of my requests for a champion at the time: expanding the darkin lore (dk, always felt drawn to Aatrox, regardless of viability), and another ninja of the shadow order (was thinking more something unique like a mage trickster using shadows to cloak themselves, but not complaining). His kit, while kinda bs on some points, was actually compelling to me. Transforming tells a story, his mastery of shadow techniques allow him his free-moving W, more speed through walls and the full form of his version of Zed's death mark; Rhaast, meanwhile unleashes his blade, showing his Q's true power, a more ruthless W, and the ult mixed in with blood magic for a similar but new technique. I also like that they went for a different path than the original, where the wielder was to be righteous. I really like that Kayn's a well-intentioned extremist at best, and a mentally-scarred psychopath at worst. And I love how his playstyle reflects both Kayn's and Rhaast's personality. Kayn is precise and cold-blooded, so his executes are fast as lightning, but he's not fond of battle. Meanwhile, Rhaast wants to keep the party going forever, so his approach is more blunt, his hits are ruthless and slower, and he heals himself to stay in the fight as long as possible. I feel they shouid've just made him a dressed up more Ionian, maybe a loose shirt, under which he can hide his deformed arm. Nothing wrong with the darkin form, being monstrously crusty and all, and his shadow assassin form could've been Kayn fully clad in darkness (a bit like evelynn's stealth, but with blue highlights to make him stand out). Sorry for the rant on Scythe boi, but I like the champion for every aspect except his sexy boy design, so I felt like sharing.
Yeah being a shirtless dude ruined it for me, maybe light attire suggesting he WAS a ninja before probably helps with hjis deformed arm either standing out or poorly hidden
I really like the way they made his new skin, they swapped the blue and red- tho I'm not entirely sure, it'd be very interesting if they made rhaast the lightbringer and kayn the nightbringer, the reason i think of this is because of the silhouettes of both forms despite swapping colors- the blue dawnbringer form having horns fits the standard "red rhaast" silhouette, the red form for nightbringer on the other hand has long hair which is a characteristic of default blue kayn... I could be wrong here but it'd be so cool if they made it this way Also with kayn's undressed nature I think a semi-fit "chinese esque" clothes with a tear on the arm where rhaast resides is fitting since japanese clothes doesn't really fit him with him wielding a scythe, maybe a some armor to finish it off (?) I'm envisioning a look similar to a general from the "romance of the 3 kingdoms"... I'm so not used to imagining kayn with clothes on my head
@@yuhan4469 that could work. The cut sleeve, btw, is a euphemism for gayness based on a tale were the emperor cut off his sleeve so his basically boyfriend could nap undisturbed. not saying they could use it to imply Kayn is gay, but just thought of that anecdote and felt like sharing
@@RuzYT don't know if that's still canon but his bio says he hate wearing Armor because he thinks it slows him down but yeah it's a lame excuses for to why he's walking around shirt less ,he could have worn a Ionian robe or dress like the rest of his comrades , Idk remember that any of the order of shadows go around shirt less, but my real complain is that he doesn't have the shadow tattoos on his body like zed does , all of the order students are supposed to carve this tattoos to get their shadow powers and kayn 's supposed to have zed's level of shadow mastery so why doesn't he has them on his body that's another problem with riots design philosophy not only do they make their champions dress as less as possible but they all have flawless skin without scars or at least cool tattoos like with sivir, sylas, irellia ,kai'sa , Riven , Ashe , Olaf I mean pantheon is also shirt less but the giant scar on his chest is a awesome visual story telling same with viego's hole in his chest (though I get sometimes confused as to why it's a triangle) , kalista' s Spears stuck in her back and Samira and akali and ryze has their tattoos and it's cool as well so I idk understand why riot thinks that just being shirtless without a scratch is appiling it's boring and does a poor job telling the characters story
wild rift was really made for china and they have strict censorship laws there so they had choose between adding a skin as default in wildrift or not adding him at all
@@catzor4795 I don’t like unbound thresh either but the dudes right. In China skulls in games are illegal and threshes face was just that. And he’s right about it being focused for China too. As Nickyboy said the main league audience is in Asia. Mobile gaming is just insanely big there compared to here.
I’m gonna have to admit. I started League on Wild Rift, so I didn’t know how Thresh originally looked like. BUT HE ORIGINALLY LOOKED LIKE THAT?!! God now I’m extremely fuming, HE LOOKED ABSOLUTELY AWESOME! I dig that fiery chained skull look, 10/10 would become a Thresh main instantly if that was his actual default look on WR. And I don’t know anything about the characters much but from all of those glimpses I’ve seen in the vid, Kindred actually looks super interesting! And Aurelion by far is one of the best visually designed characters in the game for me. It’s really sad, I wish we get more of those monster enemies, because they’re gorgeous and they expand the world, with vast types of characters and creatures. Instead of League’s version of Belle Delphine.
I see the Spirit Blossom range as the champions being recruited to portray roles on a stage. Except combined with combat; so a lot like the Harlequin Eldar.
Really liked this video. When SB Kindred and Thresh were first shown I told friends I was worried future monster champ skins would be turned to generic e-boys and girls and they thought I was nuts, and as it gets proven more and more I am glad more people than just me care.
The new Karthus pentakill skin doesn't remotely ressemble the previous skin. Every new skin he looks younger and alive like Thresh/Viego. I don't know what to expect from Udyr now, I also think about other characters like Shaco, if he ever gets updated I think they'll make him look like a anime boy harley quinn without a mask and the hat is going to be his dyed hair.
I like humans champ but not like this it's so boring seeing a mens abs every day i hate it and seeing women's full of suit. So this is how riot gives us a champ that we don't like i hate this so much
*I do have an idea for school girl Reksai but it would keep her as monster but with horned lines, I do like my character design ideas even if I don't have the skills to actually draw and present my vision, but I can go from waifu to cosmic horror or something hybrid yet disturbing*

My idea is something like a "Pageant Queen Rek'sai" where it's just Rek'sai wearing a glamorous gown with glitter all over her skin and a tiara, maybe put in some cutesy blush over there. Maybe her splash art is her being presented by a scepter and tiara for winning a Beauty Pageant with other sexy and cute girl characters (prolly Lux and Qiyana) looking at her in shock and disgust respectively, like they are surprised that this monster won the crown over them.
Hugs from Brazil! I just want to congratulate you on being so dynamic and entertaining during the whole video. You know something I feel, deep down? That if Riot doesn't hire (yes, to work for them) popular names, influencers, and streamers that make this MASSIVE community move - they will, like a candle - get less and less popular, until eventually after numerous attempts from the competition, they will finally release a 5v5 MOBA that is more entertaining and doesn't fail in the same aspects as League. For me, right now, Riot should populate their workforce with people who actually LOVES the game and not just people who have to achieve selling goals. Imagine if they had big names such as Tobias Fate, Tyler1 and TFBlade forming a group, to share ideas? ... and not only limited to the most popular high elo players - also groups representing Gold/Plat/Diamonds as well, and using them to filter what the community really wants for the game, Stonks.
for me, monster champions have the most potential kit than a sexy anime character. They can design a monster champion and give them a simple kit like Sett's or they can keep doing their current route and make each one hard/weird to use. they can have more freedom in the visual design aspect and just go crazy with it. like in Killer Instinct how Aganos is an amazing character design and playstyle wise. All ik is that Unbound Thresh feels ridiculous to me and kinda ruins the character appeal if they push it as his main skin
i remember starting at wild rift. i bought a.sol because he looks so good, and i've been wanting a mid champion. later on i did realize im not good at him though. but it just to say, that as a casual gamer, you are absolutely correct, some of us don't always go to the cutie anime perfect character.
Dota does a similar thing to what you mentioned, Chinese versions of the game have separate “low violence models” that subtly change character models. Wonder why riot doesn’t do something similar
Honestly, they could've just done what they did with Karthus. Remember how in Karthus' update he was changed from Spooky Skull Lichman, to Spooky NoSkull Lichman? He did not become an Anime E-Boy, He stayed true to the Character and the Colours of the Shadow Isles.
I'm straight as fuck yet I find base skin thresh more attractive than Unbound Thresh. Why? He's DIFFERENT. I had a small thing when I started league . You could kinda tell by looking at a champ's physique how tanky they are. It made it easier to pick up the game, and 9 out of 10 times, it fits . The only exceptions are Amumu, Mini Gnar and Shen. For this reason, on day one of looking at Thresh I could already tell "He is tanky and will make me suffer in some way". Turns out I exaggerated on the second one, he just CC's you into oblivion. Look at Unbound Thresh for a second by this logic. He looks like a fighter or a bruiser. What the fuck riot?
I’ll admit, it bothers me greatly that Riot has even come out and said they’re not going to try to make even at least one monster champion a year. I think you summarized it perfectly though; Riot intentionally makes their kits niche. Looking at Asol, who I still think has the best champ design + lore on the game, but who’s kit has such a high skill floor that he literally is only played effectively by Diamond+ players…and like, 5 of them
It's not the first time Riot buries the identity of a character I enjoy, so I'm not so surprised anymore. They did that with Aatrox, not visually, but gameplaywise it's a whole new character, also they changed his personality completely, I was really fond of old Aatrox's character, but now he is gone and will never comeback.
this video perfectly sums up my frustration with current LoL. 2014-2016 was the PRIME TIME of LoL. im so tired of sexy characters, this is probably why i love characters like kindred and aurelion sol and tham kench so much, cause they have such striking and beautiful designs. kindreds design and theme and teaser were things that hit me so so hard cause they just felt so unique and yet fit so well into the world. with each monster design they stepped out of their comfort zones and outside the box. tham kench's who new Orleans bayou vibe was so fun!! his voice and overall vibe still stand out so strong. i miss monster champs!!! by the time of writing this vex was just announced, a fucking yordel after so damn long. we got our last yordel in 2016,,,,i miss old league so damn much i cant tell some of these new sexy men and women characters apart
Personally I've always loved the "monster" champs. Even when I first started on league ww, cho, Rengar, Velkoz, Asol, all of them caught my attention just cause they were a bit different then the other champs. While I've played lux, Leona, and kayn they never keep me coming back after I play them. But there's always something about champs like Malph, Mundo, Nasus, Ornn that always keep me engaged and wanting more. I think it doesn't help the anime members of the cast that I joined right after sett got released and so every single champ I've ever seen come out has just been along the same style. I'm really looking forward to vex as we'll be getting another yortle after 5 years. Hope maybe we'll get more of that Golden Age again one day. Love the vid Nicky, was well worth the wait
13:05 Yo, speaking of Rammus. I wonder if riot would change him to scale more with armor like Taric. Or give him ad so lethality Rammus can be a thing.
This is true. I was an Asol main on release but after they nerfed him to death, he is unplayable and Asol never recovered because that's how Riot wants it to be.
They did the same thing to Vel'Koz. When he released, he was a perfectly balanced champion. He didn't do well against assassins but had a good pairing against other mages and did well at farming lane safely (His one advantage against dive assassins.) He had weaknesses, he had strengths, and for the most part was relatively easy to pick up and play (outside of maybe his Q.) Then came the nerf bat to his AP scaling on his W, mana regen, and they made him over-rely on his passive/ult. That effectively killed the champion outright and made him unplayable. Even after they fixed some of his scaling problems, he is still hardly touched because of the bad PR that he had over the years from that nerf. Had Riot just done the old "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" then characters like Vel'Koz and A-Sol would have been staples for mid-lane mages.
Honestly when it comes to unbound thresh I tried to keep an open mind on the change. I never played thresh but I understood the community’s disapproval. But after seeing the cinematic I FELL in LOVE with the character. I thought they did a really good job of presenting him as a villain, at least to me, a person who has ALWAYS loved the writing of villains over hero’s. Or just villains in general over hero’s. In terms of what he’s doing in noxus I think he’s looking for mordiciser, who currently in the world is phasing in and out of reality between runtera and the ruination afterlife. Possibly looking to make a deal of some kind. As for league’s future I hope for the best and think vex is basically lissandra’s kit but overloaded and from the shadows.
Remember when Taliyah was supposed to be canonically trans, but riot figured the community was too toxic to not turn that into a huge joke? I do. Still breaks my heart
@@EvanMstr "a matter of time" _The year is 2378, Leauge of Legends 7 has finally received the first trans character in leauge history. (It's still a generic hot anime person like the last 400 Leauge champions)_
I feel like if you were to go with the idea of "Thresh but at the height of his power when he was alive", i would probably have gone even further by showing that even before he died it was hard to tell if he could be called "alive". Sort of like a mix of Viktor and Xerath in the sense that he's covered by plating and mechanisms that exists partly to optimize his ability to use his powers, and partly just to hold him together. The head spikes are still there but visibly jointed and moving, the chains still lead into ornamental screaming maws, but now they visibly enter him into him and lead into a winch of some kind in his ribs. You take one look at him and wonder not if he can be classifiable as human, but if he could EVER have been so because every bit of him is custom-made to cause as much agony and dread as possible without making it difficult to do his job, and then look at his lore and realize this wasn't an emergency like Urgot or Sion, a sick experiment like Mundo, or for the sake of progress like Viktor. He did this because he could. The only necessity to doing this to himself WAS to be better at killing. The cruelty IS his reason.
Nicky I'm so proud of you for finishing the video!! It turned out really cool and I really really enjoyed it. I think the cinematic did the best it could to give the skin more context. If Thresh looks like this when human - I guess I can be fine with that. Anime Thresh is a no go though. Hell, I am sure I would find human cinematic thresh really cool if there weren't that many attractive anime boys and girls before that and especially not if he was just one if many monsters human-ified (is that a word?)
hey man I love the video, I dont see many people talking about this so thank you. Doing the topic of Chinese censorship justice without letting it devolve into something dumb and toxic is really important.
I vibe with this whole video so much. Thresh was the first support I ever picked up because he was an awesome skeleton monster with a massive hook and lantern! Kindred is my all time favorite champion because of her lore, I have now played more games on her then anyone else. Yes she was niche, yes that made it harder at first, but I pushed through because her design was fantastic! I tried playing A-Sol, (Because I loved his concept) but had to give up because he is SO NICHE!!! I still think he is an awesome champ, just wish I could casually play him Instead of playing him for months just to understand his mechanics.
I went back and checked. The last time Riot released a monster character (that wasn't fetish bait) was August 2017 (Ornn) if you count humanoid monstrous characters, and March 2016 (Aurelion Sol) if you don't. As someone who used to main Cho'gath and Amumu back in 2011 this hits me with the big sad.
Your video was actually very engaging, you have my cheers for you to keep going! Regardless, RIot needs to understand that some disgusting monsters shoudl stay disgusting monsters, and that some disgusting monsters are actually really hot already so step off
The animation he got actually made the skin make sense and made it look better. Idk why they had to go with an anime boy on a champion meant to be a monster. The sking team really ruined thresh and the ruination event story.
I like how this video not only bashes Unbound Thresh (as it should), but works around what Riot uses as an excuse to remove not only monster, but also unusual champions away and shows, that problem of niche champions isnt their character desing, but more gameplay desing.
Literally an hour before this video has gone live Riot announced they would be updating in game Unbound Thresh to look more like he does in the cinematic. That's what I get for being slow at making videos I guess :( but it does make me hopeful that Riot will continue to do more stuff like this in the future. People deeply care about your characters Riot, listening to them is a very good idea :0

You aren't wrong at all. It's like the Apple situation right now, like Necrit mentioned on his video.
Y’know I just started scrolling into the comments when he brought you up in this video. Nice seeing ya here man! And yeah, that certainly seems to be the case with Riot atm, although my opinions are somewhat easily swayed since I’m mostly an outsider to LoL, playtime-wise.

Only then can we ever go back to a simpler time where people could create whatever they want without the mighty dollar telling them how it should be made.

the point about the niche playstyles of the monster champs riots deems as "characters audiences don't connect with" is very appreciated. I hadn't really questioned that claim from them, but now that I think about it there are plenty of monster champions with more accessible kits that are super popular.
I gotta ask you though, why didn't you question that claim?

I hope nickyboi could see this comment and hopefully pin it
Was about to write something similar, check this comment y'all. Its all about the censorship. Same thing happened to Mobile Legends a few years ago.
@@bengrz13 Checked again. Apparently this censorship does not applie to the Japanese server. I'll edit the comment.
That's why in the anime industry, massive underwage employees and trying to lick the West's boots writers goes rampant made anime what it is (a bunch of nonsense, elementary writing bs) with a few exceptions of actually good animes like Jojo and some others that I forgot the names of
I am from Vietnam so more or less, at least in the same Asian part like Japan so at least I can confirm that with the etiquette of being serious about education and morals and stuff like that. Anime is just so plainly wrong that sometimes it is just stupid to think that anime is from Japan, it would make more sense if it's from the West
Edit: Forgot conclusion, so the reason why most Japanese video games and anime bs are full of gory stuff is bc Japan mostly stopped caring about them as long as they are shipped outside of Japan, but not "In" Japan. I don't know if it's true or not, but at least I can confirm that the cute is 'absolutely not cute anime girls" , but more like cute animals like hello kitty and aggretsuko merch
Second edit: Sorry for the essay, I'm actually Vietnamese so my English might be bad which is yes in Asia and close in traditions to Japan, China, Korea, Malaysia, etc

Until we see and hear her lines and more about her and lore hope.it's good since love yordles and overall her design does look rather interesting curious to see how they handle the shadow isles aspect of her character with the shadow and all
Weeell, to be perfectly fair, League of Legends HAS had anime influence right from the beginning, we've got dudes like
- Yi (proto Yasuo)
- Ezreal (who on release had weird 'whiskers' on his cheeks like Naruto for no reason)
- the Kinkou ninjas
- Sona (essentially Hatsune Miku ported into the game)
- Lux (created by Riot Shurelia, a huge fan of Touhou who made Lux as a reference to Kirisame Marisa of that game)
Admittedly they were in the minority at the time, but there was never any doubt that League did, in some degree, pander to weebs - and, in moderation, that's perfectly fine. What I can't stand is how Riot has completely lost any sense of perspective on what made their character design great to chase that weeb/K-pop stan dollar. Anime is not the enemy, the profit incentive is.
Even Danganronpa and GG Strive have much more diversity and REAL appeal in their character designs than current league

@@tehrik0020 Not sure what your point is my guy
@@bevvvy1374 Simple, my point is that it's known for Riot to actually ignore community feedback and just do improper number crunching when it comes to issues.
Whenever I think riot has finally learned from their mistakes they pull something unforgivable like this.
@@Thescott16 Eeeeh that's what has been happening since the beginning of time. Nothing is "original". Q
I could be wrong here but it'd be so cool if they made it this way
Also with kayn's undressed nature I think a semi-fit "chinese esque" clothes with a tear on the arm where rhaast resides is fitting since japanese clothes doesn't really fit him with him wielding a scythe, maybe a some armor to finish it off (?) I'm envisioning a look similar to a general from the "romance of the 3 kingdoms"... I'm so not used to imagining kayn with clothes on my head
@@yuhan4469 that could work.
The cut sleeve, btw, is a euphemism for gayness based on a tale were the emperor cut off his sleeve so his basically boyfriend could nap undisturbed.
not saying they could use it to imply Kayn is gay, but just thought of that anecdote and felt like sharing
as a Kayn main, i'm still confused why he doesn't wanna wear a fucking shirt. Odyssey Kayn, for me, is the best appearance of Kayn.

And both have that uncanny features about them that makes you feel like they are almost human but something is off with their facade.

Imagine if they had big names such as Tobias Fate, Tyler1 and TFBlade forming a group, to share ideas?
... and not only limited to the most popular high elo players - also groups representing Gold/Plat/Diamonds as well, and using them to filter what the community really wants for the game,
Stonks.
Don't you dare call ma boi Swain ugly. He is the embodiment of the Giga-Chad attitude.
for me, monster champions have the most potential kit than a sexy anime character.
Amazing and smooth transitioning through topics, glued together by a banger script and solid meme sound effects in good ratio. GOLDEN CONTENT

i remember starting at wild rift. i bought a.sol because he looks so good, and i've been wanting a mid champion. later on i did realize im not good at him though. but it just to say, that as a casual gamer, you are absolutely correct, some of us don't always go to the cutie anime perfect character.

I think you summarized it perfectly though; Riot intentionally makes their kits niche. this video perfectly sums up my frustration with current LoL.
Bard is not only my favorite design but hes also the most fun I ever had in the game
13:05 Yo, speaking of Rammus. I wonder if riot would change him to scale more with armor like Taric. Or give him ad so lethality Rammus can be a thing.
Okay but let's also not forget the Thresh design from the Ruined King game exists which was fucking SICK and mostly armor instead of bone and skulls
bones and skulls still fits thresh as a chain warden
can't wait to see Nasus, Renekton and Azir to get the Xerath love!!

The cruelty IS his reason.
all the champions I play are monsters and I've been waiting to get another monster champ for yearsss now
Please, no human fiddlesticks in my lifetime thank you very much.
I totally can't wait till they make Vel'koz a sexy guy character with tentacles and a purple six-pack.
You would say the same about xerath right given the fact that he doesnt look human at all but oh well here we are

Was expecting at the end for him to say "This is not Thresh, this is Trash"

I went back and checked. The last time Riot released a monster character (that wasn't fetish bait) was August 2017 (Ornn) if you count humanoid monstrous characters, and March 2016 (Aurelion Sol) if you don't. As someone who used to main Cho'gath and Amumu back in 2011 this hits me with the big sad.

I like how this video not only bashes Unbound Thresh (as it should), but works around what Riot uses as an excuse to remove not only monster, but also unusual champions away and shows, that problem of niche champions isnt their character desing, but more gameplay desing.
