Thoughts on this episode of Hannibal?
My thoughts shouldn't count, because I love every episode, every scene, every word of this show, so I am clearly biased.
What I'm saying, is in a Ven Diagram, I am a Bryan Fuller fan, and a Thomas Harris fan.
I love this episode, one of my favorites. It's better to look at this show as less of a crime procedural and more of a gothic horror, it becomes increasingly surreal and things happen more for dramatic than practical effect. All the episodic elements relate to the overall plot themes, and it becomes much less episodic from S2 on, and S2 is generally regarded as the strongest season, though S3's good too and has an amazing ending.
One thing about this show is is that it’s not supposed to be realistic, don’t get hung up on the technicalities of stuff, like the seemingly infinite time Hannibal has in a day, or the angel maker doing all that to himself. It’s not fantasy but it’s not really our universe either, it’s like an in between, it’s surrealistic with a gothic dreamy feeling to it.
"HOW did he do that???"
Never ask that question. This show works primarily on dream logic, you just gotta vibe with it. It's not REALLY a detective show--it's a meditation the Gothic and capital R Romantic genres viewed through the lens of acid trippy surrealism lol
As the show continues you will find that the "case of the week" format goes away. It's also important to realize that all the cases throughout the show relate more to our main characters. The cases often are more about reflecting the conflicts that the characters are going through. It definitely becomes less and less traditional in its episode structure as it goes. From this point in Season 1, it just gets better and better.
6:26 This show is definitely going to give you Hannibal's profile so to speak, you will get to see his "feelings" about the people he deems worthy of his "friendship". And a bit of suspended disbelief goes a long way in this show, surrealism is a big factor! Its like a slightly different universe where people talk all flowery and metaphorical and serial killers pollute the Baltimore area in droves lol. I love Jack and Bella together so bad :'')
Fun fact about this episode: NBC had an issue with the angels nudity in the first scene. The fix they were happy with? Use more CGI blood to cover the private areas! 😭.
Also, like others have mentioned, this show operates off gothic dream logic. It looks like a crime procedural in season 1... To start with. And then things get more interesting.
American censorship in a nutshell.
One of my fave season 1 eps, love the relationship between Bella and Jack. Oh and nothing about the Hannibal series is traditional 😂
As others mentioned: the logistics/timetables are never really plausible in this show. I like to think there's a touch of magical realism in the Hannibal verse. Others have probably mentioned the thematic connections between this and IWTV (Bryan Fuller's interests, taking inspiration from the Loustat relationship) and I think the production style shares a lot of similarity as well - poignant instrumental compositions, exacting attention to set design and costuming, heightened poetic language. No coincidence that they're my top two shows of all time!
Oh, and assume everything Hannibal serves is people. Veggies flavored with people bacon. Salad? People oil in the dressing. Beer? I dunno, aged in people barrels?
gosh, I love this episode! the visuals are amazing, and a lot of interesting plot lines are starting to progress here.
and that "did you just smell me?" is a start for something veeery complicated and wholesome!!
just you wait, there is a lot of big storms coming :D
still love your reactions, can't wait for you to see next episodes!
also, the thing I absolutely adore about Hannibal series is actors, they are just perfect for their roles! and they will bring to life some beautifully played scenes
I'm so happy there's another reaction! I've been looking forward to this. I can't wait for you to react to Episode 8 it's my favourite from the first season.
Hannibal is a detective show, but it's an unorthodox one. The dialogue in Hannibal is not very realistic most of the time, bordering on poetic frequently. It's a heightened reality where victims are displayed as an expression of their killer's philosophical outlook. The practicality of how they achieve their displays is second to why they do it, and there are plenty of victims later on where you look at them and go, "How the fuck did that happen?" Hannibal is not a show as concerned with checking security footage, DNA, and alibies to catch the killer, but for understanding them through their crimes because it reflects things about the main cast.
