Hannibal actually smelled the cancer on Bella Crawford during that dinner, even if he said it was her perfume. That's why he told that story about smelling cancer on one of his teachers. Bella definitely understood, because it's just after that she started therapy with Hannibal. Which I suppose is the result Hannibal wanted.

Will's aftershave will still be relevant up to season three. Lol. The ravenstag symbolizes Hannibal and Will's connection and also Will's emerging darkness, his Becoming. It will become clearer in season two. Your theory is correct about Hannibal being the Chesapeake Ripper, he's also the Copycat Killer.

"Hannibal makes a damn good villain" Oh yeah. I have never seen a more evil fictional character. The worst thing about trying to catch a killer like him is that he has no motive that can be traced. He kills and manipulates because he likes it.

6:35 Would say the intention is for you to think she's having an affair initially. Even though she isn't, it's still an interesting exploration into the moralities of it in a relationship that is effectively dead. Jack recognises the passionless, borderline loveless, state of their relationship and recognises that if anything is happening, it is a symptom of the state of their relationship, for which they are both guilty. This is hardly relevant for most cases of infidelity, 99% of the time it's a shorter term relationship and the motivations stem from places of malice or carelessness. It's just a perspective that is not commonly explored and it's a refreshing take

I love that whole conversation with Freddie. Also, fyi that list also has psychiatrists, surgeons and chefs... Hannibal checks three boxes there. :P
Hannibal is SO angry that someone else is getting the credit for the kills from the Chesapeake ripper.
Alana: Did you inadvertently plant the idea in Gideon's head?
Chilton: MOI!?!? Psychic driving? I would NEVER!
    Alana: I said inadvertently
    Chilton: Oh. Whoops.
Yeah, the deer is indeed Hannibal. In the fandom it's either Stagatha, the Ravenstag (since it has black feathers), or swiggety swag the nightmare stag. :P It might help to remember where you saw ravens and a deer together. :)
My fave meme is someone writing out a list of Annibal, Bannibal, Cannibal (OH! that's the killer!) Dannibal, Eannibal, Fannibal (the fans!), Gannibal, Hannibal (GASP! No way!)
Or the publisher who talks to Harris about his book.
Publisher: So do you have a new idea, because that book about Hurderer the murderer is not it.
    Harris: It's about a cannibal.
    Publisher: Go on...

    On episode 5:
Without spoiling anything, you have really good points about your hypothesis, specially related to Will and Hannibal's relationship... won't say more 😅.
I think it was on purpose of the show to make us think Bella was being unfaithful, the show does this in some occasions, trying to makes us think something and then it's something else... great edit of you clowning 🤡 🤣.
I think that this episode shows how Jack's life issues (in this case with his wife) and his way of thinking of how to make justice shows that he might make the wrong decisions, specially concerning Will :(
A fun (?) fact about this episode: the imagery of the "angels" on the beginning of the episode had to be changed because of the network.... they were showing.... to much... butt, so the show put more blood on the bodies so they weren't showing the as* 😅
Now I'll watch your reaction on episode 6 😁

On Episode 6: not much to say about it, just that this is the show giving us a break 😅 but it gives important information that will be useful later.
And yes, your thoughts on what is going on are on the right side 😉
So I'll comment on something else about episode 5, more like another fun fact. There's a video here in yt that analyzes the clothing in this show (don't watch the video since it has major spoilers 😅) and talks about the fashion on "Glinda" (the reporter woman that you hate 😅) and talks about the clothes Gina's character uses in this episode, how she is wearing a white dress when she's in dinner with Hannibal and Jack, then how she wears black and white in the two sessions with Hannibal and then in her last scene when she's with Jack, discussing her illness she's wearing a black dress; so yeah in this show, the clothing and the general style is like another important factor 😁

I don't think i have ever met one Hannibal fan who likes Jack. For someone who claims to be a good guy, he is willing to use and break Will till he has nothing left to give. At the shows core, Will is not a bad guy. Even so... gotta say i am NOT surprised he snapped. His anger and mind is used as a weapon by Hannibal. I truly believe Hannibal was trying to help him. Maybe not at first. At first he was appalled by his rudeness. yet he never even attempts to harm Will. He only tries to "better" him, in whatever fucked up way he feels is fit. I personally think Hannibal was interested in Will. He is a psychopath, incapable of being in love or caring for another. However, with Will you can see him opening up. Not in the first season.. but later on!!!

[[[ 1X5 PART ONE ]]] I know you are way past these episodes...but I figured giving you little bits (or long-ass essays) on past episodes you have seen already will kind of beef up your enjoyment of the rest of the series, especially given that religion and mythology isn't really your thing and these play major roles in the deeper subtext of the show as it did in the novels). I'll do one for 1x6 in a day or two.
    1. The RavenStag (those are raven feathers on the stag) represents the connection between Hannibal (as the Stag aspect) and Will (as the Raven aspect). I won’t go all into the significance of the symbolism of the Stag and the Raven because it might give some things a way, but all you need to know right now is that whenever you see the Ravenstag, it represents Hannibal and Will’s deeply profound connection to each other. Knowing that will make a scene where the creature appears far more significant and insightful. For example, in the opening scene of this episode where Will is sleepwalking in the middle of the road and we see the Ravenstag is the one nudging Will to continue walking. With knowing what the Ravenstag represents, you realize that there is something (or better said, someone) within Will that’s being drawn to Hannibal, which also answers the question as to where Will was heading.
    2. Hannibal doesn't pick his victims by smelling them lol, nor is Hannibal a "villain". In fact, Hannibal was never intended to be a villain in Thomas Harris' novels, in the films or even the show...he is an anti-hero character. It takes understanding how Hannibal sees the world to get a handle on how he can be a serial killing cannibal and a hero at the same time.
Hannibal’s philosophical view of the world and himself requires that his *ethos, pathos, and logos* be defined.
*His ethos* is clear and unwavering. All those who don’t live up to his ethos are destined for the slaughterhouse. He is a lover of humanity which he sees in terms of potential, the exceptional, beauty, and appeal. Thus, according to his ethos, if you squander your potential, if you peddle the banal, if you don’t appreciate all humanity has to offer, if you have no appeal to Hannibal whatsoever...then you are just a weed in Eden’s garden. As any gardener knows, weeds must be ripped up by their roots so they don’t take nutrients from the soil of flowers more deserving to flourish. Likewise, the weeds must not be allowed to multiply and outnumber as they choke out the flowers and block the lovely view. His compassion is subject to his ethos as well and is more often reserved for those in whom he sees echos of his sister, Mischa, within them (who was murdered and cannibalized when they were children and he was forced by starvation to consume), and as a result, awakening in him feelings that had died with her.
Hannibal’s ethos extends to the rude, to bullies, and even killers and cannibals who fall short of his ethos.
*His pathos* is aesthetic (escapism, fantasy, detachment, passivity, reverie, elegance, and harmony).
As someone who’s been an obsessed fan of the Hannibal novels since 1983, I personally believe Mads’ (pronounced as MASS as at the end of ThoMAS, just fyi) is THE definitive Hannibal Lecter. I say that because he captures the whole of the character in a way that I have not seen any other actor do. I also believe Bryan Fuller’s vision was able to embody the soul and texture of the novels in a way no other adaption was able to authentically. I believe the reason for this is quite simple...Bryan is a huge fan of the novels whereas the writers, producers, and directors of the big screen adaptations were not. Bryan had a grasp of the novels and characters and it showed in the TV Series. With that in mind, I once read something a fan of the TV Series wrote in regards to Mad’s Mikkelsen’s version of Hannibal. This fan’s musing on Hannibal’s pathos via Mads’ acting and Bryan’s writing is completely relevant to the pathos of Thomas Harris’ Hannibal. I’ll quote it here:
“...he [Hannibal] believes the world is this bright, incredible playground. It’s a paper dollhouse, and he’s playing dress up. He’s not some tiger prowling among the sheep. He’s the grown man version of Alice in Wonderland, back for round two down the rabbit hole, and this time he knows all the tricks, and he drinks, delighted, from one half of a shattered teacup. His childhood was a nightmare and he decided to embrace it and wear it as a Cheshire smile: a smile that remains the only shining thing in the darkness. Everything he touches turns technicolor, flowers grow from human chests, men dream of becoming dragons, pigs lick their lips and ask him to dinner, death is paid for in gold coins, love is an origami heart, and God is just playing with his toys."
*Hannibal’s logos* is decadence-waging guerrilla warfare against the dominant culture and social structures. He defines himself and the world through moral conflict and contrast. He defies God (conflict). He shows his acts of “evil” are rather humble when compared to God’s acts of evil (contrast).
    Hannibal, the rebel cannibal.
It is in this that Hannibal is a lot like Lucifer we find in John Milton’s “Paradise Lost”...the anti-hero of the Romantics such as William Blake and Percy Bysshe Shelley. It’s not surprising then that Mads said he was portraying Hannibal from that angle, Lucifer, the fallen angel (I’ll likely drop more on that as your go through the series). In the novel "Hannibal" it is inferred that Hannibal is Shaitan, a name for the satan Iblis, the leader of the Jiin in Islam. Hannibal, as a character in the novels, is a combination of the archangel Samael (aka Lucifer/Satan), Mephistopheles, Beelzebub, and the shaitan Iblis. An exert from the Novel "Hannibal":
    ***
...at the moment of touching Dr. Fell she [Romula] looked into his face, felt sucked to the red centers of his eyes, felt the huge cold vacuum pull her heart against her ribs and her hand flew away from his face to cover her baby’s face and she heard her voice say, “Perdonami, perdonami, signore,” turning and fleeing as the doctor looked after her for a long moment, until the light went out and he was a silhouette again against candles in a chapel, and with quick, light strides he went on his way.
Pazzi, pale with anger, found Romula supporting herself on the [baptismal] font, bathing the baby’s eyes repeatedly with holy water, bathing its eyes in case it had looked at Dr. Fell. Bitter curses stopped in his mouth when he looked at her stricken face. Her eyes were enormous in the gloom. “That is the Devil,” she said. “Shaitan, Son of the Morning, I’ve seen him now.” (novel Hannibal, pg. 165-166)
--NOTE: you might recognize the last bit there...those are the words Will says when he pulls the gun on Hannibal while standing in the Hobb’s kitchen in (1x13: Savoureux)
Hannibal: "Is this who you really are?"
Will: "I am who I've always been. The scales have just fallen from my eyes. *I can see you now.*"
To go even further...The origin of the name ‘Hannibal’ is of Assyrian origin and means, “the grace of Baal, the one whom Baal has favoured.”
Ba'al was a Mesopotamian god who the Hebrews called by the slur, "Beelzebul/Beelzebub" which roughly translates to "Lord of the dung hill," and his followers were referred to as "flies". In Medieval times, the meaning became "Lord of the Flies," and the slur was associated with the Devil. Thus, Beelzebul/bub and the Devil being one in the same. I guess you can see how all that ties in ;)
Hannibal is Lithuanian, and is the descendant of ‘Hannibal the Grim’, a pagan conqueror from Lithuania who in the 12th century fought alongside Poland against the Teutonic Knights in the Battle of Žalgiris. While ‘Hannibal the Grim’ is a conqueror (and obviously an established chieftain since he had warriors to command and hell of a lot of wealth), the name itself is not a traditional Lithuanian name. This hints at the probability that ‘Hannibal the Grim’ is most likely of Turkish/Iranian descent since it was the country of the Assyrian Empire who migrated to Euro-Asian/Indo-European regions. There are some hints that Hannibal the Grim was at the very least Scythian (made up of Serbian and Iranian tribes...and Scythians had high affinity for horses. Their whole culture was built around them...which is of relevant note to the show).
Thus, it would completely make sense why the son of a Lithuanian Count, would be the 8th Hannibal of his line, bearing an Assyrian name.
Back to Beelzebub: the storm god who is both creator and destroyer is Ba'al (Hadad) and as I said, he was nicknamed “Beelzebub” (meaning “Lord of the Flies”) by the Israelites who equated this god with Satan. It was more of an insult, honestly, because they were basically calling him the lord of the flies that feast on dung. Thus, lord of the shit eaters. Tasty. lol
"I stared at Hobbs, and the space opposite me assumed the shape of a man filled with dark and swarming flies. Then I scattered them.” -(Will 1x13 and the novel ‘Red Dragon’ pg. 242)
So, while Hannibal is a killer and a cannibal, there is a reason we find ourselves apprehensively endeared to the man and why we eventually find his nature morally acceptable even while we are repulsed. He is the anti-hero of Thomas Harris' novels...not the villain, and there's something elegant and even righteous that’s motivating what he does. Cue The Rolling Stone’s “Sympathy For The Devil”.

[[[ 1x5 PART TWO ]]] As Lucifer, Hannibal constructs a labyrinth of circumstances and scenarios that are designed to allow someone he deems to have the merit of value, to be forced to utilize the full breadth of their potential...and in doing so, become fully aware of their true nature..and act upon it. It's a test. If you pass it, you live. If you don't, you're breakfast. Resisting only serves to tease Hannibal to continue playing with you...like a full cat batting around a mouse until either the cat grows bored, or the cat gets hungry again. Either way, the mouse is dead meat.
As a note of interest: Lucifer isn’t really a name, it’s a Latin word for "light-bringer" in Latin) as in meaning the planet Venus...often personified as a male figure bearing a torch. When the Bible was being translated from Greek into Latin (the Vulgate) the Greek words Phosphoros (meaning “light-bringer” and Heosphoros (meaning "dawn-bringer") were associated with the planet Venus, which is why for both ‘lucifer’ is used. As a name for the Devil, the more common meaning in English, "Lucifer" is the Armenian (luisi peri - huri peri) rendering of the Hebrew word hêylêl; (pronunciation: hay-lale) in Isaiah (Isaiah 14:12) given in the King James Version of the Bible meaning "the morning star, the planet Venus", or, as an adjective, "light-bringing" (he who lights the way).
As a name for the planet in its morning aspect, "Lucifer" (Light-Bringer) is a proper name and is capitalized in English. In Greco-Roman civilization, it was often personified and considered a god and in some versions considered a son of Aurora (the Dawn). A similar name used by the Roman poet Catullus for the planet in its evening aspect is "Noctifer" (Night-Bringer).
Not only does the Devil bear the name “Lucifer” and is associated the the planet Venus, but Jesus also has His name rendered as “Lucifer” and is associate with the planet Venus in the Latin Vulgate (Latin translation of the Bible)...which taps into some really interesting parallels as the TV Series progresses.
While a lot of people who are fans of the TV Series and movies don’t really pick up on the heavily religious and philosophical themes, the novels are absolutely drowning in them. Fuller utilized these themes from the novels effectively without losing the audience or coming off as pretentious.
As Mephistopheles, Hannibal uses his hyper-empathy to ‘penetrate’ into the psyche and the pneuma of an individual and see them for who they truly are (a gift Will shares).
In the novel ‘Hannibal’, this irresistible ache Clarice has for not only Hannibal’s attention, but his ever present stab of hunger he has for her...and the pleasure she feels from his ‘penetration’ (psychically and eventually, physically) is the reason given for why Clarice Starling was initially emotionally and intellectually attracted to Hannibal and why she eventually makes the choice to become intimately involved with him (both psychically, and physically)...running away with him and leaving everything else behind...while for Hannibal, the ecstatic envelopment of Clarice, even after months of his attempts to remake Clarice into the image of his sister, Mischa, failed, that Hannibal realized (with some help from Clarice herself ;P ), that the intense feelings he felt for his sister was sacrificial in it’s transaction (sacrificial love), but the intense feelings he felt for Clarice was sacramental (sacramental love)...the reciprocal consumption and transubstantiation of one another into each other. As Plato once described it, conjoined souls, split apart by the gods because they feared their power if allowed to remain a single being, humans were then cursed to spend their lives aching for their other half. In this case, the two halves came together due to circumstance, and have become one once again...and are now a force to be reckoned with...causing both mortals and gods to tremble in fear.
Hannibal’s way of compartmentalizing what has happened is that he and Clarice’s Memory Palaces are connected, conjoined, sharing some rooms between the two of them, yet there are rooms and spaces that remain their own….and his sister, Mischa, flows freely between both Palaces. Clarice’s Memory Palace isn’t just a way to share and partition her and Hannibal’s empathetic and psychic immersion between each other, but a place where those she has lost can come to live, and whom she will never be parted with again, vividly and perfectly preserved within her.
Here is a future quote from TV Series Will (which you might have already heard depending on how far ahead you are recording before posting), “I’m building rooms in my Memory Palace for all my friends.”
It’s just one of hundreds of such parallels Fuller utilized in the absorption of Clarice of the novels, into Will in his Series. The character development arcs with Hannibal and Clarice in regards to them as individuals and their relationship is relevant to the character development of Hannibal and Will in the TV Series as individuals and the evolution of their own relationship.
      3) Hannibal’s smelling people: In the novel “Hannibal Rising,” it’s stated that Hannibal was born with a remarkable mind that presents as neuroatypical. His heightened sense of smell (hyperosmia), hyperlexia, eidetic memory (same as Will); his lack of register on polygraphs, a heart rate that doesn’t increase even while committing a violent act; his ability to suppress the sensation of pain by will, etc. It seems to be implied that the trauma he experienced only enhanced the way his already remarkable mind perceived reality and self (which his mind was able to do on a multiverse level) and correlated reality (which his mind was able to do on a quantum level).
      4) If you look at the "stunning" scene again where Will is standing under the security guard who was made into an angel….as Jack is walking away…an aureole of light forms around Will’s head. In all iconographies, an aureole of radiant light around the head or body is a representation of a sacred personage almost solely used on images of Jesus and/or the Virgin Mary. Yes…this is relevant. ;) You have to pay attention to the details with this show lol. Everything means something, and it is almost always religious or mythical in nature lol.
      5) Angel Maker knowing that those he is killing are bad guys is only information he could be getting from someone who has access to the FBI database. That’s the takeaway we are to have from this scene.
      6) In the conversation between Hannibal and Will, Hannibal asks him, “Do you feel abandoned Will?” Will replies, “Abandonment requires expectation.”
In essence, Will doesn’t feel abandoned because he doesn’t expect to never be abandoned. His life is one of isolation and loneliness and he doesn’t expect anything different.
      7) Knowing that Will feels the way he does as stated in #6…it makes what he says when in the lab and discovering the Angel Maker knew the people he killed were bad guys more interesting:
Beverly: Could Angel Maker be a Vigilante?
WILL: Well, vigilante’s are pragmatic, they’re purposeful. They don’t lay down and sleep under their crimes. In his mind, he was doing God’s work.
      Beverly: That spells vigilante.
WILL: Well, playing a God has other advantages. One of them…is always being alone.
Did you catch it? What is it that Will says to Hannibal in Abigail's kitchen just before Will gets shot?
Hannibal: "At a time when other men first see and fear their isolation, yours has become understandable to you. You are alone because you are unique."
Will: "I'm as alone as you are."
It won't be the last time it is inferred that Will is God/Jesus...a divine and terrible figure deserving of devotion (at least in a certain someone's eyes).
HANNIBAL: It wasn’t the act of killing Hobbs that got you down, was it? Did you really feel so bad because killing him felt so good?
WILL: *whispers* I liked killing Hobbs
HANNIBAL: Killing must feel good to God too-He does it all the time. And are we not created in his image?
WILL: That depends on who you ask.
HANNIBAL: God’s terrific. He dropped a church roof on 34 of His worshipers last Wednesday night in Texas, while they sang a hymn.
WILL: And did God feel good about that?
      HANNIBAL: He felt powerful.
*on Will’s expression as it dawns on him that he and God share the same pathology*
      8) I don’t think you caught what was hinted at in the end there with the Angel Maker vision. The Angel Maker was kneeling before Will in supplication (prayer/worship) who he is seeing as a demon and these are the lines that follow:
Angel Maker: I see what you are.
      Will: What do you see?
Angel Maker: Inside. I can bring it out of you.
Will: Not all the way out.
Angel Maker: I can give you, the majesty of your Becoming.
The Angel Maker isn’t saying he’s going to take the evil inside him and turn it into something angelic…he’s saying he’s going to assist Will in his metamorphosis…that the evil that’s been lurking within him needs to be born (brought out of him). Now, put Hannibal in the place of the Angel Maker. The kneeling at Will’s feet, the almost awe as he looks up at Will. The edge of begging to be the one to “give you, the majesty of your Becoming,” and Will’s resistance in that the evil persona within him won’t ever be brought all the way out.
      It’s an interesting imagery…no? ;)
