  • At More Than Curly Salon formally located in Aurora, Co, we have seen thousands of clients with various types of curl patterns. Our Curl Specialists work with you to bring out the best in your curls here in Colorado's semi-arid climate.
    From time to time, we have seen clients who have had their natural curl pattern chemically changed by other Salon Stylists, who have deceived them into thinking that Smoothing Treatments are a great way to manage curly hair.
    Listen to More Than Curly client Dianna, explain how her Natural Curl pattern was altered by a professional stylist, without her consent, leaving her with months of frustration while recovering from the damage.

      @1SparksFlyOut I think you’re the idiot. It’s not about the hair itself, it’s about the principle. The client said she didn’t want something, and the stylist not only ignored her but deceived her by doing something potentially harmful just because she wanted to do it. That’s highly fucked up. She didn’t know if she was allergic to any of those chemicals, and she damaged her hair. No means no. She deserves to have been slapped AND not paid for her work

    I can relate the same happened to me at Too Groovy Salon in Atlanta. it has been 7 months and I have a distinct difference in curl pattern on my head. It is like having a mild relaxer with 7 months of new growth! I now, trust NO salon, natural or otherwise. My whole reason for going natural this final time was because of the damage done by "licensed professionals" when I wore my hair relaxed. Now, it is a repeat cycle with Natural salons. I love the Keratin. How is a keratin treatment conditioner gonna give you the same results as a full on chemical treatment. Sounds like a bit of exaggeration going on. Keratin doesn't destroy your pattern. It actually rinses out of the hair over time. Keratin isn't permanent.

      +Tessa Wilson With almost all keratin treatments, the heat is what activates the chemicals that will be bonding to the hair shaft. That heat setting is usually in the 400s and creates damage in some areas that are prone to heat damage for most people e.g. crown, nape etc. You can't wash out heat damage. I used to recommend keratin treatments until I did a thorough research on their ingredients.

    • @TaeKat
      @TaeKat 3 года назад +1

      @@SoffyLoves the ingredients have changed over the years, I have been doing keratin treatments for 4+ years and have never experienced heat damage because I know my hairs limit. I only do it at 425, a lot of women do it at 450 and that’s the temp where hair burns. So it’s all about knowledge and being vocal at the salon if you choose to do it there, but I always advocate for doing your own hair. Too many uneducated stylists playing god on your scalp lol

    I think a bad keratin treatment reflects badly on the stylist not the product. I've had several Keratin treatments and my hair always returns to its original curl pattern even after immediately washing my hair looks the same just less frizz. The most noticeable differences are blow drying and flat ironing are accomplished considerably faster and my hair doesn't revert as quickly. In general it just controls frizz therefore the hair appears smoother and stays smooth longer

    • @Just.Ashley.S
      @Just.Ashley.S 9 лет назад +2

      Jason Vaz again that's a reflection of a bad stylist (misuse of products and equipment by the stylist). The only way a flat iron will destroy your hair is if the temperature is way too high and it gives you heat damage. (misuse of equipment). Added Keratin to shampoo (misuse of the products). The products themselves are not damaging. I know so many people in real life with great results including myself. Everybody has long health hair down their backs and if they had a curl pattern it remained undisturbed

    This vid is old so I think that keratin treatment may have improved. I got a keratin treatment and my hair was 50 percent straighter but after 2 months or so I could see no evidence that I had ever had one because it does wash away. The problem also may be that her hair was straightened using too high heat which can and does alter curl patterns with just flat ironing with no chemicals.

The process was done incorrectly and the salon was wrong for ignoring the girls request.

    Keratin treatments are a bad idea on beautiful, natural hair. If you have underlying heat damage, a keratin treatment will permanently straighten it. Sure...the rest of the hair will get curly again after washing.....but those heat damaged sections will stay straight. I am happy to see that women are embracing their natural texture. It looks beautiful when properly cared for.

    I’m glad I found this channel because I have questions about Amino Acid treatments. They claim to be different from Keratin treatments because they are molecularly smaller and don’t blow the hair shaft open to receive. They say that they can temporarily loosen curl pattern depending on how much heat is used but my concern is that that temporary ends up being permanent. I had Brazilian blow out and it totally altered my curl pattern and damaged my hair. I’m interested in amino acid treatments to strengthen and add shine and less poof when flat ironing but I don’t want to mess with my curls. I wish you guys were in California.

    Thanks paconot. By stating that we are a "chemical free" Salon, most natural hair consumers understand that to mean that we refrain from using products that will alter the natural curl pattern, such as relaxers, perms or straightening solutions. Cecily Johnson the same happened to my daughter's hair at one of those salons. 😡 She has fine 3b hair, never relaxed. One time at that Dominican salon destroyed her curls. It was completely straight when when we washed it 2 weeks later. I called up there and asked her what did they put in my daughter's hair. I was told just shampoo and conditioner so it should revert back when she washes it. I told her she did and her hair is freakin straight! Then I was told it takes a few washes. It took a year and that was for her new growth to get some length and I cut off the straight hair. The thing is her hair bushes into an afro when it's dried with no moisturizer which is how she went into that salon so it looks nothing like her true texture when moisture hits it so they should have seen her hair change when it was wet. I took her because other people were taking their children but they had thick type 4 hair and it reverted back. I never knew about the keratin. Apparently they just put the crap on everybody's hair no matter the texture. That's ok for people that want to stay straight. That's so deceiving😡😡

    The stylist, type of keratin product, method of application, and maintanence makes all the difference in the world. I have a stylist who specializes in Keratin, and specializes in hair care and she uses high quality product (tested prior to purchasing) and correct method that doesn't compromise the curl pattern, it just eliminates frizz. For ex., in her method she only uses the flat iron once when 1st applying the keratin treatment. Afterwich, she never uses a flat iron again until it is time for a refresh treatment, which is months later. Not to mention, the product she uses enhances the hair resulting in considerable growth and thicking of the hair.

I can do anything with my hair because my roots won't let me. I did a perm to change the whole shape of my curls but it ended up just breaking and damaging my curls. My hair used to go down to my but when it got straighten and now it goes a little past my shoulders. I'm now starting to see a lot of strength in my curls and I don't see any breakage. If anything I see more growth. I tried a lot of the over night curls, some worked like french braids but I wanna be able to wash my hair and love it. I wanna get the keratin treatment done to my hair but I wanna keep loose curls. Something like a little tighter than beach waves. Is there a product I can use? Yes it will come back, after 4-6 months. I do it twice a year. I’ve never had any damage, but I do it myself. Using high heat helps the keratin bind to the hair but the stylist has to be knowledgeable about how high the heat should be, safely. So heat damage causes the straight areas, not the keratin.
      It is absolutely not a relaxer.

    I went to a Dominican salon in Florida for a simple flat iron and I noticed she got through my hair fast. Very shiny. When I washed it out I notice changes in my hair pattern but by then I already took a plane home. My hair was falling out so much I started collecting it in a bag. I literally had a grocery bag of hair. The hairstylist had the nerve to post before and after pictures of my hair without my permission. Be very weary of Dominican salons.

      Black women should stop going to Dominican salons. They have different hair care that they do to their hair. Black Americans have a bit different type of hair.

    Wow around Valentine's Day I had the same exact thing happen. My hair was almost shoulder stretching natural. I originally went in for a Silk press but the woman said it would not last a week bc my hair was to thick and the texture of my hair. She said she had another route I could take that would have my hair lasting at least a month and if I wanted to go back natural with a fro all I had to do is wash a couple times and the smoothing treatment would vanish unless I wanted another smoothing treatment put in. She then started telling me how unhealthy my hair was and how it needed to be trimmed. I told her I had just trimmed my hair but if it needed she could trim about half an itch. I looked down after she trimmed the back and she had cut at least 2-3 inches. My hair smelt like a burnt smell and I asked her and she said it would go away. A month later my hair smelt the same way so I went to another hair stylist who specialize in natural hair. and she said it smelt that way bc it was over processed. that she cut 2-3 inches off because she had damaged it and wanted to cover up the damage. On month 2 and my curl pattern still hasn't came back.

I was pissed and cried, and her response to her co workers was, "that's what she needs." The second and last time was for box braids. The ending was gorgeous, but the lady tells me she is charging an extra $10 because my hair was a little rough to deal with. All she did to get my hair softer was add olive oil, and she didn't even dip my ends.

  • @melissa90ify

    If an altered curl pattern is what the client wants, I see nothing wrong with (formaldehyde and salt free) keratin treatments. This should just teach people to do their research and make sure their stylist doesn't use it if it's not what they want. Clearly in this case, she didn't want any altering of her pattern and the stylist is in the wrong.

Well all it got was wavy, not curly while wet and as soon as it was dry which took 5 secs, it was bone straight so I couldn't do any natural curly styles. It did not damage my hair, I was just mad cuz I lost my curl pattern. I was transitioning at the time so it was horrible dealing with 5 inches of curly roots and 8 inches of relaxed ends.

    Split hairs? Chemicals are universal to all products. You can subdivide them into limitless groups of sets,subsets;natural, harsh safe, inert, refined, and these can be further divided into their properties, pH, viscosity, moisture, etc. The point is both natural and synthetic products are defined by properties. All can help,harm or have no zero net effect on hair. The term natural is a marketing gimmick leading many to believe that natural is better and that's not true at all.

    The keratin is wonderful. But, you have to follow all the instructions. I was losing my hair, but now it's growing again. I love it and am getting it again. But, I go to the Dominicans. And they say, don't wash hair for three days after the treatment, and then wash hair with only sulfate free shampoos. And then when I did the curl pattern came back but looser. Y'all are scaring people and I was scared and went to crochet hair. The crochet took my hair out so bad. If I had done the keratin and not the crochet I would be set right now.

    • @MoreThanCurlySalonColorado

      "the curl pattern came back, but looser". Imagine if you went to a stylist that gave you a treatment that you didn't ask for, and you lost your tight curls that you love, but now they are "looser". We are not scaring people Donna, but informing natural curlistas about how SOME stylists are in the practice of smoothing out curls without their knowledge. Keratin Treatments may be wonderful for you, and that's great for you, but the point of the story is....well maybe you should just watch it again..lol..Thanks for your comments.
