very good explanation, but did you know how to connect buttons to the arduino to switch the relay on / off and send a message to the app on my phone to see it on screen? I had made this configuration you described, but i need to have physical buttons on my arduino to control not only remote. The only thing what i dont get working is to see on my phone if the button is hit and the state of the relay is changed.

Just to clarify - to get the light to turn on the code from the App to the nodemcu is "ipaddress_of_nodemcu/relay1on"?

is the ESP8266 working on TCP or UDP mode? is it server or client? how is that you have not mentioned the port number?
