    Incredible for 1955, but a lot of these still hold up today. Complete trailblazer. I like how she had to sing and then constantly reaffirm that she loved her husband to sound less threatening (read: independent) so she didn't run into trouble. Navigating being funny with being a 'lady' must have been an impossible task in those days. Kudos.

    This set is so sharp and packed! The audience misses a joke or two before they start to keep up!

    Laughed out loud at several of the jokes. A lot of the time with older comedy I can appreciate it for what it is, but it doesn't actually make me laugh. This actually made me laugh, solid jokes.

    How did I miss this woman comic?! She is really good, and I was around in 1955, but I never heard of her or never remembered her. I may have seen the name before but this was all new to me, and she was great. One of the reasons I listen to old time radio is because there were so many wonderful entertainers out there that were never idolized (at least properly!) and discovering them is a joy. Thanks for the NEW memories!

      I agree. I didn't know her either, and I know a lot of the comics of that time. I think it was because she mainly did nightclubs and live comedy shows.
      She did play on Ed Sullivan show many times, but don't remember her.
      She had a sitcom show that lasted less than a season, mainly because she said she didn't like it. She liked live audiences. So guess she just didn't have the exposure.

      @@martinwoyzeck2634 She never made it super big like Lucy...had a sitcom for one season in the late 50s...passed at 98 in 2010...she was funny...and only in America I guess...

    Jean Carroll reminds me of Joan Rivers in many ways. Speed of delivery, comedic timing, and even their voices are similar. I watched Joan Rivers for many years and she was always hilarious. I never witnessed even one of her jokes falling flat which was incredible due to the fact that had a rapid style. She had more punch lines in one act than any stand-up comedian I've ever seen. Not even a close second in this regard. Jean Carroll had a beautiful singing voice. I found myself wishing she would just keep singing during this act and tell her jokes after she finished the song. RIPx2 Cheers

      I decided to look for Jean Carrolll because Joan Rivers & Lily Tomlin were fans of hers.

    I never heard of Jean Carrol until Joy Behar mentioned her on the Vjew. She was celebrating her 20th year on the View and she was talking about female comedians in the 50s, the lack of them, actually and she cited Jean Carrol. So, Joy Behar brought me here.

    LMAO - what a bunch of great jokes! not all that dated! and her delivery kinda reminds me of Wendy Leibman in parts, with those little under-the-breath jokes

    Even a comedian needed to know how to sing in those days. If you were not a triple threat, do not even show up to audition.

    She's great, what timing, funny jokes. Is she the mother of writer/personality E. Jean Carroll?

    • @Gary_Jaffe
      @Gary_Jaffe 3 года назад +1

      No - no relation. FROM WIKI: Elizabeth Jean "E. Jean" Carroll was born on December 12, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan. She also went by "Jeannie". Her father, Thomas F. "Tom" Carroll, Jr., was an inventor, and her mother, Betty (née McKinney) Carroll, was a retired Allen County, Indiana politician.
