    I will never not be jealous of setups like this. I very much am a flight-sim casual, but the VR mode of MSFS 2020 has really gotten me into diving much deeper into the full sim experience for the sake of immersion. As impressive as that setup is, much of it would be useless for me with a monitor strapped to my face. I have the Logitech/Saitek flight yoke coming in the mail today, and will probably get a rudder system here before long. The switch/landing gear array will probably be the next thing I grab - but I'm having trouble tracking down a good trim wheel for a reasonable price. I guess I can remap my mouse scroll wheel in the meantime.
    Anyhow, fantastic looking setup.

    I’d like a magnetic compass because I’d like to practice the reconfiguration of the heading bug when flying and I can’t see it super accurately on a screen as my laptop screen has a higher resolution than the TV I use but the TV has an aesthetic factor that immerses me. Immersion is an important factor to me as it assists in motivating me to take simming serious and to continue learning.

    • @klmelj

      Yeah I think you will like the magnetic compass addition. Yes, immersion is key. Wish I could get motion and force feedback without all the cost. :) good luck with you build. Happy Flying...

    Nice setup. Since you have used mostly out of the box equipment, this means pretty much anyone can replicate this if they want to. Building custom can be more realistic in terms of layout and feel. But its much, much more work to do that.

    Man, this is getting me excited. I'm new to flight sims. My budget is nowhere near what you currently have, but I just got a good deal and a new Saitek pro yoke + throttle on eBay and I will be adding more panels as I can afford. But it's a good start! Much better than using a mouse + keyboard + PS4 controller lol. I was using the controller as a Yoke. MSF2020 next month! Can't wait.

    Very nice setup, Karlston. Also very well explained. When you were starting to assemble, those individual gauges were the way to go, but I think at this point an iPad and software is probably the better value and more functional - you can pick the panel the way you want it, or even do a glass panel... or both. I run Linux and X-Plane, so I actually can't do that - there is another program that can basically give you a switch panel or DIY, but that is more hacking than most people are comfortable with. I think the Cessna yoke has been discontinued - because of my budget I use an iPad for map/switches/radio stack and a CH yoke which has the three levers plus two switches for gear/flaps, a hat switch, and a few yoke switches which I have programmed for views. The nice thing is you can make the setup as big or as small as you want - but a yoke and pedals is a must. Still don't know how VR is going to pan out, but since I like to do cross country flights in sim, I need access to the real world. I wish that GPS was half the price - because I would snap it up in an instant. There is an iPad app program to simulate it, but it requires Windows X-Plane only.

    • @klmelj
      @klmelj  5 лет назад +3

      Thanks for watching...yes iPad is a great addition but it does greatly limit what you do in a real plane unless you are glass panel as you mentioned. I did that prior to getting my fully gauge setup and it just did not do it for me. For me VR is nice but I do not see it becoming popular for pilot trying to stay current or proficient. I think VR will be more for sim enthusiast.

    Great setup, I began playing Xplane on an iPad and have the itch to create a sim like yours. I have a bunch of questions... before even getting into the speed of your computer, I saw the video on how you plugged it all together, but I don't understand how many USB plugs are going into the actual computer. Why do you limit the number of USB cables into the USB hubs, and are the USB hubs connected to each other? Then there is the question of RAM, speed, etc of the computer. Thanks, great videos, I watched them all.

      Thanks for watching! I hope to have more up. Currently working on my commercial pilots license. I have a total of 10 connected into the computer. I limit the number of usb cables into the hubs because if you max them out, they will not provide the proper power needed for the Saitek FIP displays or other panels and cause functionality issues. I do not have any hubs in parallel. As far as my computer specs, they are in the details of the video.

      Well, the screen just looks higher than it is and given the camera angle it looks even higher. No, it is not eye center but not all planes you fly in real life will be eye center. The screen is on a mount that I can move down a lot more, but my focus is more on, yes functionality of flying the plane. Plus, the Saitek BIP is blocking some of the screen so I try and keep the screen a little higher. Crazy thing is I have gotten people that always speak on eye level on my setup and the flight school I teach at has a RedBird AATD MCX. Those screens are not even eye centered and that is a $90k full motion sim. The screens are positioned high on the MCX... I just checked a guy out in a Bonanza I use to own and even his eyes are not eye centered and I had to teach him how to fly the plane differently than the 177 Cessna he normally is in. I even have flown in and trained in a Cessna 310 and that seat sits high, giving me a different eye level...
      All that being said, my focus in on functionality on simulating controls the best I can that will carry over to any GA plane I fly on the sim, single or twin engine. The autopilot features not so much. I only have that because I got that prior to me getting a Saitek trim wheel. The Saitek multipanel has the trim and flaps that I really like, but now only really use it for flaps. I do not really use autopilot even in real life flying even in IMC. I have right at 900 hrs and probably have flown about 20-30 hrs on autopilot because I only regularly flew one plane with autopilot and I just sold it.

    wow, what a setup. I assume you still have the Logitech (saitek) panels. I have them and was able to use Lorby to get them working in FS 2020, but major stutters as you probably know. FS 2020 will release a fix for this within a week and we should be good to go but I have an important question,,, i just wondered what your impression of the mulit-panel is (the one with the autopilot), do you like it ? Should i consider getting a Pro Flight panel to handle certain things that the autopilot panel doesn't do well at? And where did you get that annunciator panel? i was going to build one from scratch but if they make one already made that's not outrageously priced, wow. Thanks for your video!

    • @klmelj
      @klmelj  4 года назад

      Thanks for checking out. Yes I still have everything. Never heard of Lorby, will have to check them out. As far as the multipanel. I actually only use it now for flaps. So it is on my bottom list because you can map another button on the yoke for flaps. I fly by hand 99.9% of the time but have use it a few times for autopilot. The annunciator or BIP...I am not sure where I found it. I have purchase three over the last few years. Check ebay/craigs/offerup, pretty much any online sales app. If you find one they will run you probably about $300+. Good luck and happy flying.

    Great video & setup! Thank you for doing it. I have one recommendation & 2 questions. RECOMMENDATION: When money allows, switch the yoke to the $250 Honeycomb Aeronautical yoke. Every review I’ve seen - including from Austin Meyer, the creator of X-Plane, says it’s dramatically more accurate (higher resolution & less noise) than any of the Saitek or Logitech yokes and is probably 80% as good as the $1000+ yokes. Super high value. QUESTION 1: Given how much monitor prices have dropped, do you feel differently now about side monitors? That is, in the interest of spending more time flying & less time panning the image, do you still feel that side monitors are only to impress & that they don’t add to the realism aka muscle memory aspect of flying? I also only care about functionality but those side monitors seem core to accomplishing a realism to flying. It’s all about the PPL for me too (and making me a safer pilot.) QUESTION 2: What instrument panel did you mount all those instruments to? Thanks again & congrats on an absolutely awesome simulator!!

    • @klmelj
      @klmelj  4 года назад +1

      Thanks for watching. Money does allow but for me still not worth me jumping ship on my current setup. I have heard great things about that yoke. Maybe one day but not right now. Working on my commercial rating and I have all the functionality in my sim now, that no other money needs to be spent on it until I feel a need to.
      As far as monitor setups. I still would love a three-monitor setup but adding it not worth the ROI for what I am spending. My finger works just fine on the hat switch on the yoke and it does not diminish the quality of my sim flight. That money will be better spent in the air for my commercial rating. Just to note three monitors is not to impress it is good upgrade, just not worth it in my books, at least not right now. Not sure I stated that they are only to impress and do not add realism. As far as muscle memory with monitor setup, I feel it will not help at all and I feel it is not the core of realism as you mentioned…it will be natural for you to look left and right when you are in a plane flying even after flying with a single monitor.
      My Saitek FIPs are mounted with the Saitek FIP mounts, mounted to the yoke.
      Thanks again for flying and good luck on you PPL.

    • @klmelj
      @klmelj  5 лет назад

      Hey Howie, cost I am not 100% because I would purchase and sell sim packages to get what I want and the selling of the things I did not want allowed me to offset the cost. I am sure though I have about $1500 in it and that is including the RealSim Gear and Flight Sound X, which I had to purchase at full cost. If you are already a private pilot, then a basic setup with Pilot Edge is worth it for me. If you fly pilot edge three times, it has paid for itself. I look at a sim setup, as a way to repeat anything you want at anytime without the recurrent cost. Plus, I had times where I could not fly in a real plane for weeks because of weather or plane issues. No big deal because I stayed proficient by flying the sim. I struggled at first deciding to add to my sim setup or real flight time I am happy I invested in my sim.

In other words, if you were (in mid flight) to click the simulator cockpit landing gear while your gear were up (lights off) in mid flight, if the saitek unit sync's up properly , the lights would go from off to red to green with out touching the actual gear knob on the Saitek. Thanks !!!! and SUBSCRIBED!

      Harpoon_Bakery Hey, they only work with the use of the Saitek gear knob. If you activate in the sim they will stay in its last state. Hope that answers your question.
