    This is a giant otter. These are two jaguar sisters named Medrosa and Jaju. They are engaged in a standoff near Panthera’s research station in Southern Brazil. Jaguars have a diet of primarily caimans and capybaras … but these sisters seem intent on possibly broadening their dietary horizons. This individual was able to scare off the two jaguar sisters. Giant otters are carnivorous and have acute agility in the water. Some local tribes have dubbed them “aquatic jaguars." The otters form social groups to help maintain control of their territories and to protect one another. In this second standoff between a young female jaguar and a family of otters, the otters prevailed again.

      I would also doubt that a jaguar would eat a killed otter. Most predators, who may sometimes kill each other, still won't eat the carcass. Exceptions do exist, but as far as I know only in cases of dire straits ;)

Otters are more aggressive and WAY MORE SMARTER than caiman, thats why they are not on the menu.. i'm sure if a lone adult otter is caught on land the Jaguar would kill it, but I think the Otter has a chance of escaping with sheer aggression ala a wolverine or ratel..

    In general Mustelids never back down from a fight...whether Mink, Wolverines, Honey Badgers or Giant Otters. Those Jaguars are wise to back off.

    If they got hold of that jaguar they would be able to overpower it and kill it easily. There's footage of an otter family swarming a caiman and mauling it to death. They're ferocious little animals.

    I'm sure if they were on land 1 on 1 a Otter would loose & become lunch😀 but in the water jaguar is out numbered and most likely otters would drown the jaguar..

    how can jaguars kill armored prey like caimans but not giant otters? Were these two jaguars just too inexperienced with an otter to view it as prey?

    • @wannaim6499
      @wannaim6499 6 лет назад +18

      shekhar aakula Because giant otters too are known to kill caimans. :) So they are not jaguar's ordinary easy type of prey animal to say the least.

      yeah, I guess unlike caimans they are social and always close to vulnerable pack members.

      The giant otters of the Amazon river also eat caiman, actually. So they're definitely not to be messed with

    • @timoglock07
      @timoglock07 6 лет назад +7

      Otters dont kill and cant eat caimans. in fact it is the other way round. the reason why jaguars kill caiman is because jaguar mainly stalker their prey and very rarely attack head on. easy to jump on a caiman on the surface of the water or on land than an otter who lives in packs, mainly spend their time in water and also very agile in water and the group would try fighting back. if one jaguar finds a way around this am sure otters would be a staple diet for the jaguars

    What's the difference between a Jaguar and a Leopard? They both can climb a tree and have a same pattern on their body and they also raise their pubs in similar way.

      (Sorry in advance for my English, not a native speaker) The patters in their fur are different, jaguars have some dots inside circles, leopards don't. Also, the bone structure, jaguars skulls are bigger. Overall, jaguars are bigger.
