I am convinced that Charlie was somehow infected with the FEV and was super compatible. This explains is resistance to radiation, and his ability to seeming get along with and communicate with everything which I believe to be a latent psyker ability which the FEV can cause. This also explains his ability to consume massive quantities of nuka cola and his almost super human agility with hand guns.
