Regarding "Pan", the 2003 film version of "Peter Pan" by Australian director P.J. Hogan (which I saw in theaters as a kid) was well-received by critics (unlike "Pan") but was a box-office bomb.
I'd like to defend "Sinbad." It's got a great cast. Especially Michelle Phiefer's Eris.
Battleship is a really good movie.
There was good movie titled bird boy the forgotten children it make only 52 thousand dollar against 1 million dollar budget
It's crazy how The Lone Ranger negatively affected so many future projects for everyone involved
Especially since it’s really not bad
I loved Titan AE and Sinbad even if they bombed. I thought they were well written and beautifully animated. Let’s not forget that Treasure Planet and Atlantis: The Lost Empire suffered the same fates but are also cult classics in their own right.
All 3 movies you just named are 3 in my top 5 animated movies. Though Titan AE could have used a bit of better pacing in my opinion, it's story is bueaitful
@@leevio so is the animation
Haven't seen Sinbad, but the other 3 are movies I grew up on, especially Treasure Planet and it's score, the ONLY movie that wasn't a musical where I actually really notice the music right there.
No you didn't
Same here.
I worked as a movie theater usher from 2007 to 2012. Some of my memories of working at the theater were people asking for refunds for a very terrible movie. That would include Mars Needs Moms and John Carter.
I thought you said "very terrible movie", not absolute unbridled 💩 pile.
the kid was kind of a smart alec that Harvard can invite and the mom …felt like a problematic video game character that couldnt get a role
Both of these movies had black crew members. What are you trying to say?
@traviskurtz1244 is this a joke or are you really reaching for the stars right now?
No you didn't
Morbius: *stands up, wears sunglasses, lights a cigarette, walks like Batman, slaps Chris Rock then takes the award without giving a speech*
I blame AVI ARAD
They can't use Morbius. This is list is about movies who failed at the box office once. Morbius failed twice so that disqualifed the film from this list LMAO
@@RomnysGonzalez Besides, Morbius wasn't THAT expensive for a superhero flick. It still failed, but it wasn't as bad as the movies in the video.
what.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
King Arthur was so good and did not deserve to flop and I wish it could’ve went on for at least another sequel or two
Me too.
* *could've gone on*
I felt king Arthur was a good movie people just expected the same old regurgitated garbage or a lord of the rings full on CGI travesty, instead they got a proper guy Ritchie gritty tale with a mind trip in the third act
Charlie Hunham looked out of place in the setting.
I always thought Eddie Murphy would have been great playing the genie in Guy Ritchies Aladdin a great comeback role for him.
The Christmas carol with Jim Carrey was one of my favorite Christmas movies
‘John Carter’ became underrated during the 100th anniversary of the pulp hero character we didn’t know about.
Let’s hope they’ll possibly reboot it and then make good money in the future.
I don't think a reboot would work, people just don't care about the character the setting or the story. I am not saying I hate it and it does have its fans but getting a mainstream audience to turn up in droves especially in this day and age isn't going to happen for this film no matter who makes it.
@@urbanshadow777 I swear someone said the same exact thing about Dune about 12 years ago lol almost verbatim
Let's not
I thought the movie was decent but then again I read all of the books in my teen years so I already had that attachment. Wouldn't mind a second go at it tbh.
Ghostbusters (2016) was the textbook example of why you shouldn’t ignore what your target demographic actually wanted and why you shouldn’t insult them when they believe a beloved film shouldn’t be rebooted.
Bringing back the original cast one by one separately was a Hail Mary pass to try and save the movie.
How could someone fail with such an iconic character like The Lone Ranger???
As much as I love Disney movies, not every movie is a classic or a masterpiece
To be honest I love The Lone Ranger it’s a childhood class in my eyes 😌
Sinbad was one of my favorite movies, I honestly think it deserves more love
That Fifa movie United Passions back in 2014 had a budget of 32M and only made back less than 200k. It also only made 1k in its opening week. I feel like that counts as a Box office fail.
i remember that movie. it painted FIFA in a worst light then it was in.
@@mattalan6618 I have heard the opposite, as FIFA was behind the production.
@@fromthehaven94 yes to make themselves look good
Doesn’t surprise me that Disney’s A Christmas Carol is on this list
The Last Airbender should've been on here. How could they possibly miss it?
Real ones know the muppet’s Christmas Carol is the best
The old 1950 version starring Alistair Sim is my all time, every Christmas, favorite.
Honestly, It's a shame that Lone Ranger Battleship and John Carter failed
Battleship deserved to fail. The idea of adapting a board game into film was a terrible idea from inception. Maybe Monopoly could pull it off but not a game like Battleship.
I grew up watching Final Fantasy Spirits Within, Adventures of Pluto Nash and my absolute favorite movie Titan AE. If those movies were considered flops then i must have made up 50% of their watch times lol.
No you didn't
It's ok, I actually saw John Carter in theaters more than once out of choice.
John Carter was a good movie I rewatch it like every year. I also really liked Battleship and The Lone Ranger.
Early DreamWorks movies are my childhood. Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas is one of my favorites
So no one liked mo-cap movies back then! But A Christmas Carol is probably one of the most faithful adaptations out there! I admit I was a little nervous near the end, but I still think it’s good!
The Lone Ranger, John Carter, Mortal Engines were good movies.
John Carter wasn't a very faithful adaptation, but if you ignore that minor detail it was still a pretty good movie.
Wow, honestly surprised at how many Disney joints were on this list. But, I’m curious as to why The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Prince of Persia and Treasure Planet didn’t make the cut.
I thought Jem and the Holograms would be on this list. I heard it only lasted for about 2 weeks in the theaters before being pulled. They heavily promoted it on RUclips and yet no one really saw it.
I guess you had to be there watching the show in the 80s to appreciate the movie, and I think we are few. I watched it everyday when I was kid.
@@cliftonharmon2403 never saw the show but just knew that it flopped at the theaters.
Can’t wait to come back at the end of the century to see the updated list!
Missed James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, budget 200 mil, it lost 100 mil to the studio
I watch the 2009 Christmas Carol movie every year - I will defend it until the day I die.
The saddest example of a box office fail that was mentioned here has GOT to be Sinbad! It is so good, with a brilliant villain, awesome action sequences and a great message. It deserved a sequel and what's worse, it changed the course of the way animated films were made. I miss the old school methods used, so much more whimsical, I waste no time with these new CG and hyperrealistic ones. The funniest box office fail is The Lone Ranger. The studio must've been so confident it would be a massive success because of Johnny's participation and threw so much money at it, only for it to flop. Johnny Depp hasn't been in anything worth watching since.
The Lone Ranger was my biggest disappointment. Alas, the 1981 movie version still stands as the best rendition so far.
I enjoyed Jupiter Ascending. It's no classic, but pretty good. I also didn't think John Carter was all that bad... but it lost a LOT of money, sadly. Moonfall was extremely cheesy but kind of fun. The problem with many of these films are the ridiculous budgets. They have to make sooo much $$ just to turn a profit.
you are so correct, the budgets are insane
What about Treasure Planet? How could you guys possibly leave the underrated Disney masterpiece out of this list? And when you make a Top 20 Biggest Animated Box Office Fails of the Century (So Far), be sure to include that.
I began collecting 3D movies a couple years ago, so Ironically I have many of these movies on bluray now.. So I've got that going for me.
I saw _John Carter_ and thought it very good. Likewise, the Jim Carrey version of _A Christmas Carol_ wasn't bad. As for the latest version of _Ben-Hur,_ while not horrendously bad, it's nowhere near as good as the 1959 version or, for that matter, the 1925 version.
Thank you for the update, WatchMojo..!! I've got to watch that movie Mortal Engine (2018) now. I didn't know about that movie until today. :)
Sindbad is one of my all time favorite movies. Although I can see clearly how it bombed at release, it makes me sad cuz that movie's entertainment capacity is absolutely top-notch.
Honesty, Lone Ranger was a GREAT movie! If the budget hadn't been so big it would have made enough to have a sequel
Why isn’t Cats on here? That movie bombed so hard!
I loved a Christmas Carol I didn’t know it bombed so bad
I noticed most of these movies were Disney or Disney related.
That's what they get for mostly having big budgets. At the same time, their successful movies have equally as big.
Some of these movies aren't bad though. The thing about Disney is they pump way too much money in their movies, so they'll obviously struggle to make that up again.
Even if it bombed, I’m actually one of the only few people who enjoy Terminator Dark Fate. It wasn’t great and definitely not as good as the masterpieces that are the first and second, but there’s so many things I liked about it. The action, the acting, and the villain did have a lot of times where he shined. Overall, not great, but I had a blast with it
Both The Lone Ranger and Tomorrowland are films I've been interested in seeing for years, but they never appear to be available on Disney+
Tommorowland is available, at least in Poland
@@JastrzaBBB Doesn't do me any good in the United States. And even if it did, what about The Lone Ranger?
@@Nathaniel_E_Dearing Gotta get that VPN
@@aaronrocs Not in the budget.
Lone Ranger is racist as fizzle
‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ is such an underrated requel.
Both T2 and ‘The Terminator’ are still equally the best among the franchise.
And Tim Miller doesn't deserve all the hate because if James Cameron's decision to kill one major character
Dark Fate is crap. It’s woke garbage.
I, still to this day, enjoy ‘Ben-Hur’, ‘The Lone Ranger’, and ‘John Carter’ very much. They were just promoted and marketed very poorly.
440: I’ve heard this like a million times but guess what? My mom loves John Carter. Loves it!
The Lone Ranger has one of the best third acts I’ve ever seen in a movie
Terrible taste
@@scottbarkley496 I apologize. I was unaware that you were the gold standard, and that anyone who has any kind of differing interests should be shamed.
@@wilford789 Depp stans are the worst
@@scottbarkley496 Dang you would have really gotten me if I was one. And by the way I saw this the first time you wrote it.
I loved Arthur. Charlie was the perfect fit for a Guy Ritchie film. I'm gutted it bombed 😭
14:39 this dialog 😂😂
you forgot to mention The Cats and Doolittle with Dawny Jr. And how the flying fork Carter is just a mention when that movie is The Mother of all Box Flops?
Final Fantasy: Spirits Within was underrated IMO. I adored that movie. It was very imperfect but I found it interesting anyway.
Listen, that version of a Christmas Carol is the most accurate rendition of the story I've seen.
The one with Patrick Stewart was also pretty accurate
I saw quite a few of these and some I completely forgot about.
The 1999 Patrick Stweart version of a Christmas carol is the best version I've ever seen
Look at the 1951 version of "Scrooge," please again?
@@robertveith6383 Okay, I take that back. The 1951 version of Scrooge and the 1999 version with Patrick Stewart are neck in neck for the best version ever
Tomorrowland,
A Christmas Carol, Monster Trucks,
and Titan A.E. are awesome!
Monster Trucks yes.
so is sinbad. i have watched it like 4 times already
@@swagmessiah666 I haven't seen it yet. Thanks for the recommendation.👍
I immediately forgot everything about strange world because it wasn’t that memorable
Come on. Disney’s The Lone Ranger wasn’t all that bad. I enjoyed Johnny Depp portraying Tonto so much along with Barry Pepper as Capt. Fuller, one of my favorite Disney villains. Plus, it was the film critics. They caused the lack of interest that led to The Lone Ranger’s failure!
Depp stans are the worst ..
The movie BOMBED
I liked the movie too
This film was character homicide. It absolutely sucked in every way. I saw it in theaters and I am a fan of The Lone Ranger and the was shit on the level below The Green Hornet movie. Johnny Depp is a great actor but this film is why people hate him.
I enjoyed it too. I think I read a comment from Depp or somebody else that the film critics had their reviews already done before even seeing the movie
Not sure if its really true but I like to believe its true
@@Barricade379 Ironically the studio that gets accused of bribing reviewers every which where?
Even Eddie Murphy HATES that Pluto Nash movie. I seen him in an interview talking about it.
The reason why Jupiter Ascending flopped is because they let Sean Bean live. Everyone knows he has to die in any show he's in to appease the rating gods
'The voice of God' in dreadlocks? How did I missed this??!!??🤣🤣🤣😅🤣🤣😆😂🤣😅🤣🤣😂😂
Strange World had the potential Disney threw it under the bus.
i would like to see 6 King Arthur Movies. I think this one very enjoyable.
People shouldn't blame TIM MILLER for the failure of "Terminator: Dark Fate"
He was the director, NOT the writer
Killing that one character was James Cameron's idea
Miller deserves another chance because he still got a lot to offer
He not only gave us DEADPOOL, but also SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, directed by his friend, Jeff Fowler
Also, have anyone seen LOVE, DEATH and ROBOTS?
That film may have buried the Terminator franchise for good...
LOVE, DEATH and ROBOTS fantastic series!
Dark Fate stinks like sh*t!
2011’s ‘Green Lantern’ was also a huge mistake. SMDH
I like the live action Mulan 🤷🏼♀️
I'm surprised there weren't more pandemic era (2020-2021) films on the list. Films like Wonder Woman 1984, Bloodshot, New Mutants, The Suicide Squad, Matrix Resurrections, etc. must've lost a ton of money.
Bloodshot was in theaters when most non-essential businesses started closing. New Mutants was released in between different waves of cases. And both WW84 and Matrix were the bookends of the HBO Max/same day theatrical release.
The original True Grit is a classic.
Honestly, don't think you can honestly count movies released on streaming in the middle of the pandemic. (Mulan for example)
If it was released in 2022 it would've made half a Bil easily.
The Lone Ranger was Disney's biggest box office bomb in 2013.
I'm in a very small minority I paid to see waterworld. When I left the cinema I noticed my seat was damp. What a bummer 😂
“Excuse me sir, can we have tickets for four adults and one child to see Pluto Nash in 3D?” -BasicallyIDoWrk
BRAD BIRD should direct STAR TREK
I can't picture anyone better than him, especially after seeing TOMORROWLAND
YOU need to get CONTROL of your CAPS BUTTON
He just capped names of people and movies. Actually I like it.
@@players7686Little tip: to bold words, just put asterisks around them. Underscores (_) will italicize words (as you can properly italicize works like films, plays, and TV shows), and minus signs on both sides of a word will strike it through.
Spirits Within was good and I enjoyed it. But I can see why it never got the big payout it needed.
I wasn’t that excited for Pan (didn’t recognize Hugh Jackman), Mortal Engines and Mars Needs Moms (FYI, I didn’t see it in theaters. Only on dvd from Redbox when I was with my dad)
Nichele Nichols Lt. Uhura in Pluto Nash was epic. I liked Pluto Nash because it was set on the moon's lunar colony.
Well, that was rough!
Say what you want but I enjoyed Strange World. It’s the first Disney movie I saw by myself.
Okay, so it’s a bomb just like The Black Cauldron (which almost killed the company), Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Sleeping Beauty
There was another Ben Hur?! I know only old one.
Final Fantasy was Good. I was in Cinema but... they didnt want air it! Yeah. So i Watch this much much later.
Pluto Nash. I watched this on VHS. Like almost everyone from my classroom. It was funny that Time.
Titan AE? Love it!! Watched Many Times!
Tomorrowland. Nice movie. Like it very much.
Sindbad. Just like Titan AE. Great movie! Love it!
Lone Ranger. Why? Itd funny like Pirates from Care... Like it.
Is that footage of younger Arnold and Linda Hamilton fighting over the shotgun from Dark Fate?
Poor Taylor Kitsch!
He has the honor of being the star of two of these bombs.
So glad to see Lightyear and Bros flop after the sheer arrogance of each film's lead.
It's almost funny hearing the term "box office" anymore. I like my own concessions, thank you very much.
Honestly, not the Mulan I was expecting in 2020 but in retrospect it was badass and beautiful.
May not be a musical or bring back great characters but it’s premise to the original tale of the legendary hero, it was great in my taste
I love the steampunk genre
Is so unique and underused
Which is why MORTAL ENGINES was such a disappointment
Although most of these films were far from perfect , I enjoyed nearly all of them (the live action ones anyway) even John Carter ! We definitely could have done without the King Arthur reimagine. Most were great visual spectacles which is often enough to derive enjoyment. One question, what were they smoking at the pitch meeting for "Mars Needs Moms."
Still can't believe try tried to fit an entire Final Fantasy Game Idea into a measly 2 Hour Movie.
it's no wonder strange world was released in november.
Strange World failed because Disney refused to market it. It was very en par for Disney.
Plus people just don't trust Disney content these days..
Saw lots of promotion, noone want an agenda pushed through childrens entertainment.
The same was true for John Carter. The bland title didn't help its popularity either.
Seems like Disney doesn’t know what fans want anymore

You can add the Golden Compass to that list because of the religious controversy. The controversy is due to the author of the book series (Philip Pullman) had a problem with organized religion.
Remaking *Ben-Hur* made absolutely no sense. It was a boring, 3 1/2 hour movie from 1959, and the only reason anyone remembers it today is because of the chariot race, which has been copied and spoofed in countless other media. We never needed to see it remade, and I seriously have to question who came up with this, and who did they think the intended audience was?
Thanks to a consolidation of multiple companies within each of the main media conglomerates, most of these box office failures are blips on the radar.
Carrying Gary Oldman??? Oldman wasn't even carried home from the hospital 🙄
Ben Hur was such an EPIC... FAIL... That I didn't even know it existed!?
I'd love to see a list of movies that have caused bankruptcy, if it's already been covered, can I be cheeky and have the link 😉
Man, it's like they don't know how to make good movies No more.
Halle Berry's bombs should be included for the box office bombs of century here they are Catwoman,Kings,Darktide,Kings,Perfect Stangers,Cloud Atlas and Moonfall.
You mentioned Kings twice. A movie which I first found out about at the DVD section at Target. A movie that probably didn't have a big budget like Catwoman, Cloud Atlas, or Moonfall, and definitely didn't have a wide release.
Well, I only saw 3 of these movies and I really enjoyed Tomorrowland and John Carter. I had some moments in the Lone Ranger as well, mostly due to the horse... or stunt horses I should say. For example, one of those "stallions" wasn't even a gelding! HOWEVER, what really prompted me to respond was that Mortal Engines. I tried to read that book. I don't not finish books very often, but that's one I will probably actually put in the trash!
Sinbad and Titan AE got robbed; such a bummer more people didn't see them. Both legit movies.
