"Hold On" Lyrics:
Hold on
Hold on to yourself
For this is gonna hurt like hell
Hold on
Hold on to yourself
You know that only time will tell
What is it in me that refuses to believe
This isn't easier than the real thing
My love
You know that you're my best friend
You know I'd do anything for you
My love
Let nothing come between us
My love for you is strong and true
Am I in heaven here or am i...
At the crossroads I am standing
So now you're sleeping peaceful
I lie awake and pray
That you'll be strong tomorrow and we'll
See another day and we will praise it
And love the light that brings a smile
Across your face
Oh God if you're out there won't you hear me
I know that we've never talked before
Oh God the man I love is leaving
Won't you take him when he comes to your door
Am I in heaven here or am I in hell
At the crossroads I am standing
So now you're sleeping peaceful
I lie awake and pray
That you'll be strong tomorrow and we'll
See another day and we will praise it
And love the light that brings a smile
Across your face...
Hold on
Hold on to yourself
For this is gonna hurt like hell

I love the story behind this song...She was watching a documentory on this couple from canada. This woman found out her boyfriend was HIV+ and decided that she loved him enough that she would stay with him and fight it together...they got married and she watched him grow weaker everyday...till finally years later he died...and Sarah wrote this song out of the emotion the show gave her....
This was one of the first songs I heard when I finally got into music again after my father's suicide. It made me re-live breaking the news to my 3 younger brothers. It moved me to tears and yet was comforting at the same time with the "we'll get through this" attitude. I haven't heard it in so long; it just made me tear up again listening to it here. Thanks for sharing :)
bless you
Fumbling Towards Ecstasy is the album that introduced me to Sarah McLachlan and it remains one of my favourites. This song in particular strikes a chord. As I recall, Sarah wrote it for some friends of hers, the male in the couple was dying of AIDS. This was in the early days of the epidemic. Having lost so many friends myself, this song meant and still means a lot to me.
I am, as yet, unconvinced that there has ever been a better song than this one.
And it's goin' on thirty years now... ;-)
She wrote it because a friend of hers husband was dying of cancer.
@@rebeccacorpas-galisa9900I had thought it was about someone she knew dying of AIDS, but it's very possible I am ill-informed on this one.
I agree.
I'll be using it in a movie. It is a masterpiece.
I have to stop watching/listening to this video because it has been making me cry for over twenty years.
This is, in my opinion, the best Sarah song of all. so powerful, so direct. i was quite young when this came out and I painted the lyrics on my wall in my first apartment. I had recently lost a sister and this song really helped me see that there is more to life than this.
this song means a lot to me.when I lost the one person in the world I loved and she loved me unconditionally, I listened to this song more times than I can count.got me threw and Sara McLaughlin and this song will always resonate deeply within me.
"Hold on. Hold onto yourself. For this is going to hurt like hell" Best opening lines of a song ever. Very powerful all the way through.
If you have ever lost someone you love, this song strikes right to the heart and soul. If you haven't -- you won't get it.
"Hold On" got me through my divorce in 2001. That's when my world was opened up to Sarah and I've never looked back. She is an absolutely amazing talent, artist, and all around fantastic person. I hope to meet her some day if just for a second to say Thank You for all the wonderfulness she has brought into my life.
'Hold on to yourself this is going to hurt like hell" The best line ever in a song!!!
You know you hear all these unique voice's and hers is the most beautiful voice I've ever heard.
25+ years later.... Still a great song. Definitely the voice of an angel.
How can't the singer and or writer not feel anything such a sad song id be crying every time
@@AndrewWerner-p1l it is about a real story of a woman watching her husband die of a terminal illness.
goooood heavens she's beautiful!.. amazing voice.. nothing beats her voice.. tallanted canadiaaan BYAAAAAAAAAAHHH!
most beautiful.... intense....deep..... song...ever...
this song takes your breath away every time......
LIVING THE LIFE OF WATCHING DEATH COME TO SOMEONE SPECIAL , HORRIBLE AND IT HAUNTS YOU FOREVER, NEVER GOES AWAY! NO WORDS CAN EXPRESS THESE SONG EXSPRESS JUST THAT! BEAUTIFUL AND OUTSPOKEN!
Most under-rated song from Sarah ever!
Such a beautiful song by a beautiful woman. Her songs have meaning and substance to them. They are built with skin, muscle, and bones. The real deal
this song has put a mark on me and taught me that love hurts so badly that sometimes you can barely handle it, but yet there is hope thanks for existing sara
This song is a favorite of mine since Hearing it in a series of Several songs in a video about a patient's recovery from Guillain Barre Syndrome!
Deep and jerking of the insides out. Feelings stir every time I hear this song. I would feel the same way if I lost my spouse of thirty years. Makes me feel deeply grateful for everyday we have together.
i thought this song was about the man she loved leaving and going somewhere the next day, so she stayed with him, so i would sing it at night as a prayer to the man i love! now that i know it's about that!...that kind of makes the song better!
i think this song is so powerfull and deep. When u don't have any hope....any power to go on...hold on. U have to! And i think you'll make it only if you really want to and you really belive in what you're proposing to yourself
A. MAY. ZING. not just in this song, but in this song as typically she is.... and in my opinion, as more amazing she is as a human. We are all great.. but Sarah excels beyond mere mortals. She is an angel and a demigoddess.
I may have never lost anyone, but I dont see why I would have to to really understand and feel the power and meaning in this song. I love it.
Beautiful.. thats it and thats all
While this isn't Sarah's best video, it is one of her greatest songs. Ita actually on the new CD Closer that she's putting out for her greatest hits. Try to listen to the song without watching the video. Its about her friend losing a battle to AIDS and how they are thankful for everyday he survives.
Sarah's music got me through tough times in the past. Thanks
I dedicate this song to the victims of the earthquakes in Haiti...
We must hold on and pray 4 a better!
One of the best starts to a track
Yes this is the first song I thought of when son died in my arms and I couldn’t save him. I did cpr. My one and only and I thought of this song because “it’s going to hurt like hell”. And still does. He would have have turned 36 this week 1/27/22. It was his heart. Not drugs or anything like that. He loved the Beatles and so many other bands. Played a mean bass!! I miss him so much. He just died June of 2021. It takes time.
I am really sorry for your loss. Hope, Sweet God will heal you soon with his love for you.🙏
this is a BEAUTIFUL song.. i LOVE the afterglow live version
That's REALLY My Favorite Song.
This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it
We do ab workouts to this song in dance class, and when she sings, "this is gonna hurt like hell". She's right.
Old song so relevant. Hold on so many times yes love hurts like hell.
gorgeousssss make me cry :( lol
Yep know the story behind. But her insight to what we ask ourselves the lyrics is remarkable.
Amen, my friend. Amen!
No Alternative. Loved that album too :)
That is absolutly beautiful what you wrote, i really apreciate it! :)
This is the era of hers I really liked.
Love this song
מדהים מדהים הלוואי ושרה תופיע בישראל :-)
No Alternative. Loved that album too ^_^
This was my first time hearing the real version of this song...and I don't care for it.
I love the one from Mirrorball. So much more emotion in it.
This one, @Melissa Hall ?

To each his own, but I think objectively, the live version's emphasis on folk guitar and pretty straight, slow tempo drum part give it a simpler feel that's easier to pull off live, although I have seen McLachlan and her band perform live with the kind of nuance and complexity that her studio recordings have.
@@johnleonard2507 yup that’s the one. When I was a teen I bought mirror ball because I thought it was a ‘best of’ album because it had all the songs I wanted....yeah I was annoyed at first that it was a live concert recording. It ended up being the only Sarah McLachlin album I owned so I ended up listening to it only 😂
love you,you go girl
Great song
sos una grosa!
Awesome !!!
WOW!!!!!
💓💓💓💓
I love Sarah
Oh ...god❤
Hurts, to close to home...I wonder...will I ever get it?
beautiful song :D
LOVE SARAH!!!! CLASSY LADY, TALENT...DEEP DEEP LYRICIST.. XOXOXO (HOPE I SPELLED THAT RIGHT!) LOL
This will be the last song I hear when I end it all
Oh my
The theme song to 2020.
You will always still be there, hauntinh me, like through my whole life!Rod,...
Well life / love are not here to be owned or controlled.
Pain comes in trying to grasp what was meant to be only experienced and shared for its given time.
Like a false religion will have you search for God outside of you or through them:
Many people also search outside of themselves for love, before forgiving themselves and others and looking deep within for what has always been..
Beautifull, Sarah. My sagrad heart is conecction whith you
@turfturbo - This was on the Mirrorball album, which was where I first heard it. Whether that came first or not, I much prefer that Mirrorball version over this one.
This one @turfturbo ?
ruclips.net/video/ftdDW0K60hc/видео.html
I'm guessing the live Mirrorball version followed the studio recording (although there's a different studio mix on "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy").
To each his own, but I think objectively, the live version's emphasis on folk guitar and pretty straight, slow tempo drum part give it a simpler feel that's easier to pull off live, although I have seen McLachlan and her band perform live with the kind of nuance and complexity that her studio recordings have.
I wanna hear Sarah sing Roll Out The Barrel.
to answer celticdrw, Sarah has stated many times in her career that she is a lifelong agnostic with a catholic upbringing and is raising her children agnostically, teaching themof all religions and allowing them to make their own decisions later, her soon to be ex-husband Ashwin Sood is an atheist with a jewish upbringing
grosaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!
do you know how she thought this song up...its kinda sad but beautiful...
For...me?❤
This is my anthem for my wife divorcing me in 2020, this "is gonna hurt like hell".
Are you sure thats not in 2022?
This sounds like an alternative version than what was on the album?
4 minutes 20 seconds I gotta get home soon
You and your voice are so beautiful,i fell in love with you and just to one day hug you,i would be in the arms of an angel.
Lost my husband hope god did take him in
Someone Please tell me the name of the benefit album this was on! I can not for the life of me find the title. I used to listen to it all the time in HS. 1993/94?
No Alternative
2008 called- it wants its pixels back
It is of you, I will destroy it.
You don't dodge prosecution that hits me while you sing I soured By..and not cough up every penny afyer
lol........do u notice that there are so little canadian singers that when people think they are good, they are say they are good candians, but when an american is good, u never hear he/she is a good american singer
😭
Which album is this version from? I've heard the Mirrorball version, and it sounds much different than this one.
chimchim22 Fumbling Towards Ecstasy
This music video has a slightly different mix (although it sounds like the same "take"/performance).
The Fumbling Towards Ecstasy mix has double tracked vocals straight outta the gate.

@EmpressOrchid Link me to dat show plox
I love Sarah.. I mean LOVE.. but I really think I like the live version from Mirrorball a bit better.. there is a lot more emotion to it.. this feels way too upbeat for what the words are putting across. I still Love it though.. maybe Mirrorball just spoiled me ^.^
You're crazy. The mirror ball one is wayyy too sunny and radio friendly. This is dark and anguished, like a song with these lyrics should sound.
In this video it's hard to keep eye contact. It's like she is peering into my soul. Her eyes are very beautiful but they are a little spooky, well dam I don't know how to explain it. Maybe this is the reason that some people say don't make eye contact. My X GF had the same looking eyes, but she was evil. I'm in no way saying that Sarah is that love all her music.
I love this song but the video isn’t very good. It would have been more touching if it was related to the song as it’s so powerful and she could have done so much with it
Peace!!!!

How many came here because of grey's anatomy 2019
only if you count remembering seeing her in concert in the early 90s hearing it on Gray's and listening to something from a lifetime ago as if it were just yesterday.
Me too! Who was the artist who sang it on Grey's?
Not me avid fan and follower of Sarah before she even took the step out on her own in the early 90's y'all fans know there are hidden tracks on most of her CD's
Just had too...
Sorry, but no. I'm an old fart who came here because I've been a fan since "Vox" debuted on Video Hits back in '88.... ;-)

@CmdrGendoIkari
This is the original version. The longer version on The Freedom Sessions album is the remix.
You mean it didn't first come out on "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy"?
Different mix here too, with more double tracked vocals straight outta the gate
ruclips.net/video/vHpKMudNfyw/видео.html
The Freedom Sessions version is an entirely different (piano version) performance.
A "remix" is when you have the same basic performance mixed differently at the studio console , emphasizing different elements of the same performance or "take", and perhaps completely adding or subtracting other elements.
Anyway, here's the Freedom Sessions performance

anybody know the drum machine model used in this?
dark and Light she d be a good painter this is how I see life and I am painter she s pretty interesting we share the same birthday ....Sara it s coming up Happy Birthday Jan 28 th .....go toward Heaven always 50 is a good age
I don't know if she paints but she does draw and it is beautiful
.
I wish this was the album version of the music. the bass is way too loud and the vocals are way too low.
Double tracked vocals straight outta the gate

You even Snell like yeast and Cameron, and not shit scared kids
No sound youtube
Hmm... Not bad, but I like the original version far more than this remix.
This one?
I agree!

@nycait882006 maybe you'd like to see me sitting beside my wife's hospital bed. I'd rather see loss portrayed a little more artisticly
iS HER HAIR short here already or is it just pulled back?
