We all saw the demo and people already started mentioning all the red flags. We need to ask why silicon valley has moved to copy the corporate game dev community where they release unfinished products and expect consumers to lap it up?
I think Dave is probably right in saying that these companies needed to release the devices early once they heard that Google and Apple are releasing their own AI programs soon. I bet at the start of these projects, the creators had high hopes for what could really be done on these devices, but after plenty of tinkering, etc., they've gotten them to the state they're currently in, which isn't great, but now they've already spent so much money on their development that if they wait to release them until after Google and Apple release theirs, they're just not going to end up making any money. So they released them in this unfinished state because it was basically the only way they could possibly make some money back on the project - and still probably won't be profitable, but it's better than just wasting 100% of it. And maybe they totally plan on continuing to work on things, so the devices will get better and better, but they needed to show them off now to get some interest from people before Google/Apple enter the fray. If they waited, interest would probably be near 0 because these devices can't do what Google/Apple's AI can probably do from within your actual phone. At least, not yet.
I don't think this is quite true. In my opinion, a good AI pin is possible right now, but it would take enormous expertise and expense to develop for a market that hasn't been proven. I have two different Google pixels... I never was able to make Google assistant work... I would love to, but I just don't know how... Hey Google just don't trigger 9/10 times..
Two major changes I would've made when designing a device like this would be swap out the scroll wheel for the old but amazing blackberry ball, and if it MUST be that chunky, I'd add ALL the features and hardware from the Flipper Zero. Right now, as it stands, it's useless, may as well buy one, just to disassemble it, reverse engineer the AI learning, and make your own with similar features. This is what happens when someone is too excited about their idea to actually put in effort towards features real consumers would want.
You nailed it when you said 'this should be an app'. Connecting that comment to Google and Apple's control, they probably see it the same way too. Yeah G+A might make a pin or whatever but there's more value embedding an enriched assistant into existing devices and existing software than having to carry secondary or tertiary devices around. There's literally nothing in the Rabbit or the Humane AI pin that makes me think anything other than 'yeah but that's what a phone does now / is for'.
I think the cheaper build is actually a good decision. They need to get it out for people to use and gain traction at a low price before they're certain on buy-in. Then they can improve on v2 when they have the income
I also think the Rabbit R1 has alot of potential as a macro device with the LAM in a similar sense to how the Flipper Zero can do things that a phone can't do because of the legal ramifications it could have. I'm not sure how good or bad that is for the R1 however because it could get it in trouble with companies that don't like that level of personal automation and with countries like Brazil and Canada trying to crack down on the Flipper Zero

I would love to, but I just don't know how...
Hey Google just don't trigger 9/10 times..
Context, this device remembers Context. Simply put u don't need prompts, u can speak to it like a human
The main reason I watch these videos is to witness the evolution of Dave's hair
In size and interface, The rabbit reminds me of one of my early 2000s pre apple semi-smart phone.
This is one of your greatest videos yet. Your insight on the concept and the environment it's into is so valuable.
Dave as usual with deep insights and straight to the point
Finally, an honest conversation! Thank you!
... sorry, where have you been hearing people say good things about this product?
Why not make it a smart waych like device??
I think the cheaper build is actually a good decision. They need to get it out for people to use and gain traction at a low price before they're certain on buy-in. Then they can improve on v2 when they have the income
I also think the Rabbit R1 has alot of potential as a macro device with the LAM in a similar sense to how the Flipper Zero can do things that a phone can't do because of the legal ramifications it could have. I'm not sure how good or bad that is for the R1 however because it could get it in trouble with companies that don't like that level of personal automation and with countries like Brazil and Canada trying to crack down on the Flipper Zero
Commenting without watching the video first is mad
But weirdos exist who need to comment "first"
"I just wanna tap stuff, dude." - Dave2D, 2024
Now you know how us gamers feel about every AAA preorder games with day 1 DLC felt like~
I guess its a crime to call a product "shit" these days.
Well... I'll say it then. It's shit.
Just love the animations to convert the R1 into a phone, the amount of effort to prove a point is just amazing. Another
perfect review.
I legit lol'd when a smartphone popped next to it to show how this is just a quirky gimmick in its current state
My dad is blind, and would find something like this SO useful, I just wish it was done right. I’ve been looking for something similar that could help him for so long.
Pixel’s TalkBack accessibility mode is pretty great ruclips.net/video/wYPTZIFQoDQ/видео.htmlsi=4mIKrJdB71ZzAhXz
No chance an app on a current gen smartphone can help him?
@@yannickingermanyyou can't beat hardware buttons when dealing with accessibility
@@BassRukarioGuerrero there are smartphones with hardware buttons. (Maybe not current gen but yeah before smartphones went full screen there were those with buttons)
@@yannickingermany I'd love to see a phone with a wheel. Last one I had was a blackberry that made me bleed when playing fishing games.
This is why I watch Dave and been a subscriber for a long time. Love him or not- Dave just speaks his truth👍🏻
Hi Dave, I met you today at yorkdale mall Canada , love your content bro❤
I like how we were able to watch the battery going down as you were talking
If $200 isn’t ’premium’ enough for this gimmick device then I don’t know what is!
I can’t wait to not talk about it seriously 😂
Thank you for your point of view on this device. Always interesting and a unique perspective.
Bought mine a while ago one insomniac night, still looking forward to finally seeing it, but a lot of the wind already dropped out of the sails some time ago. I’m hopefully I could find a use for it as I’m ND and struggle with some tasks that phones are frustrating for. Maybe by the time they deliver to Europe some of these issues will be addressed but time will tell.
Those devices are the NFT of AI. They don't serve a purpose but every AI enthusiast tries to sell you one.
A $200 app. Lol
More expensive than people playground and minecraft combined
Gemini is already on my Pixel Fold. It is an option if you look in the play store. Almost exactly the same thing. It does have some of the local access to contacts, but that is all done locally, not on the cloud.
The only redeeming feature of this present obsession with AI handhelds is that for the first time since before the smartphone, we’re getting fun and interesting form factors again.
$200 app scam
no
29 seconds ago is crazy
Why?
@@sammyjohnson5596 Well what were you doing 29 seconds ago? Exactly.
Damn you're so fortunate. Your life must have a new meaning now
@@sammyjohnson5596I think he means that he is early to the video. He clicked on it after 29 seconds after it got uploaded. It's one of those weirdos that gets kicks by being first to a RUclips video.
You're missing the point!
This is a TOY.
A TOY. That's what it is. It's a $200 tech novelty that will be a collectible memento of the early days of AI. For rabbit, this is a data collection operation. YOU are training the model. YOU are making it capable. That's why they don't charge you to use it.
This is a quirky, fun, toy that will lead to better things later. Let it be what it is, and enjoy the ride.
9:03 You can get an AI LLM baked into your phone. Android allows you to change your voice assistant from Google Assistant to Gemini. It can access your data just like Google Assistant did. Or, you can get the Gemini app on Android or through the Google app on iOS/iPadOS ; not sure if they can access your data though.
You guys should look into the guy that runs the company and his prior peddling for crypto, green energy, metaverse. Basically ticking every fomo box.
Talking about the limitations of the touchscreen; I wonder how far TO got to chime in regarding the UX, cause I really like the way they purposely make their tools complicated to use. I think it's much more gratifying to use something that has a bit of friction to it and challenges you.
I kinda love the „rabbitphone“ design🤩🤣
You could adjust the volume with one hand by holding down the button then rolling the rabbit along the table..
It should be a companion to your phone letting you not use it when you want to not get distracted by notifcations or other apps.
I've been watching the Rabbit R1 for a while, and I think I will try to purchase one once there is more functionality to make it worth it. $199 is affordable in tech world but also $199 is a huge investment in my reality lol
Subscribed!! Thanks for this video
To answer your question Dave. The reason apple and google won’t make a dedicated device is cause we already have them. The watch the phone the Goggles glass whatever you wanna call it having a dedicated device is pointless
Alternative title: The most passive aggressive dave2d video
Love it 🎉🎉 , 😂😂
Similar energy as this meeting could've been an email.
This hardware could've been an app.
If there is ever a time I need a review from one of the best reviewers is when a newly released product goes on the market. I hope this will not be a trend as you are one of my top reviewers.
I’m still waiting for mine to be delivered. But no matter how or good or bad it is - I don’t really care, because they gave me and everyone who bought the R1, a free year of Perplexity Pro - which rocks!
@Dave2D why the abrupt ending man ? xd! sounded kinda strange with the video ending without a "thumbs is you like it, subs if you love it, see you in the next one" . Petition to bring it back man!
Called it as soon as it was announced. I felt like a wet blanket telling people what I thought when people at work were excited about it, but I don't feel so bad now as I probably saved them some $$$
Really cool take, thanks. I’d really be interested in you view of the various AI models about, ChatGPT, Co-pilot etc
Google Gemini already can be set to replace Google Assistant, making a LLM your default assistant that can respond to voice promps, use vision and more.
Never seen the dude so brutally honest anytime before!
Wait, $200 is not a premium product nowadays?
When did that happen?
I must of missed the memo.
Unless we are only comparing with Apple prices.
