I don't know Dave... intuitively, it was clear from the very first moment that there cannot be any selector button. I mean, what should it select anyway? the element you're looking at? the whole screen is a selector area 😄
@chepulis I do agree that getting a functional and good feeling print would take some time, but like @SimonBauer7 said some post processing could get it to a state similar to the product in the video
4:21 the first generation iPod nano has a plastic front place, so the one you’re holding is the second generation that has the aluminum shell akin to the iPod mini.
For clarification, the unit sent to Dave (as we told him) is a test unit for the 45mm watch, not SE, hence the wheel issue - We sent it to Dave for a first look and didn’t know he’d publish early, so we couldn’t clarify. (Still a Dave2D fan)
All three of my 45mm watches fit into the slot but were too tight on the wheel mechanism and didn't allow the wheel too turn. The SE was a loose fit (hence the paper to make it fit better) but at least allowed the movement of the wheel.
The Clicks case for iPhones are pretty neat. Kinds of bring back the nostalgia of using a blackberry with some shortcuts tuned for iOS. I definitely have a softspot for my Q10 and wish it was something viable in today's world (uses ARM, not ARM64, so very limited selection of apps).
The funny thing about tactility is that moving to virtual interfaces (even with some limited haptics) isn't always a straightforward advancement. There's a reason that most keyboard and mice enthusiasts have to go back decades in Apple's history to find a halfway decent peripheral from them, even though they are a behemoth in consumer electronics now (their Magic trackpads are respectable, though, but still not comparable to using a mouse).
I don't understand that, if they put so much effort into the mechanism for the crown, why not hijack Apple's "pinch to select" they have in accessibility and create a mechanism for the centre button that'll emulate it? Apple can already tell if someone pinches their fingers with the device and handles it through software already, so all someone would have to do is find a way to trick that mechanism to activate whenever the centre button is clicked.
Uhhhhh how do you think the watch knows that you pinched ?? By because apple spys on u and inform watch instantly ?? It feels the muscle contraption from your wrist but that's a phone being held in hand you can't do that Tho they had a option to make machanism for that I just thought of it or maybe it's just hard to create irl or there's no button to select on apple watch idk I've never used any
That entire feature hinges on the biometric sensors in the watch detecting motion and blood pressure in your wrist. Since this gadget removes the watch from the wrist, ‘pinch to select’ simply won’t work.
Yes, exactly like he said within the first 10 seconds of the video. Thank you Captain Obvious. But if you watch further than just the first 10 seconds, you’ll find out it’s a lot more than “just a case”.
Not the same. This is a fun lil project. I’m also a bit disappointed Dave didn’t use a watch that fit. How can you review something with the wrong fit? Kinda pointless video, really.
Apparently these were sent to him. So he made the video out of courtesy. Not worth it tho. Very disappointed. It's not a product. It's a mechanism which I might've daydreamed about.
More than the product idea itself, it's the price they want to sell it at, which shows their hubris. Which explains the overwhelming negative reception in the comments, instead of simply talking about the thing as it is.
i kind of like this idea in theory. for my use case, my job doesn’t allow us to actually wear the watches so disguising it as a mini ipod is the perfect idea for me in THEORY😂 ironically i was thinking of using my apple watch as like a phone “replacement” and this gave me some hope. i might try the lite version and then again i might not.
I designed something similar for my Apple Watch Ultra, but instead of the scroll wheel, there’s a slot for my AirPods Pro case. I feel that it’s a much better design. The scroll wheel is cool for nostalgia I suppose, but I get more use from having a spot for the AirPods, and it can still be used one handed. I love using it when I go out on a hike or climbing and don’t feel like bringing my phone with me
This is kinda cool for digital minimalist. You can do everything you need to and get notifications for all of it but using it is not the best. Theres not apps that suck you in.
Nah then you're not the intended customer anyway. It's supposed to bank on the nostalgia factory. $8 should be the max they should charge. Otherwise they'll be undercut easily.
I don't know what you expected hahaha, how would it have clicked? The problem with the product is once you consider removing the scrollwheel (because it sucks) then you realise it's just a plastic shell for an Apple Watch, which has zero value.
Add in external battery (USB-C to charge), replace the scroll wheel with a bluetooth keyboard with a little roller that electronically controls the crown and you might have a winner.
As soon as I heard “Hope you guys enjoyed this video”, my nostalgic brain was ready for “thumbs if you liked it, subs if you loved it”… but it didn’t happen 😂
Honestly this is one time where I would've liked to see it priced a bit higher, but actually have a small motor+servo to manipulate the crown with a capacitive scroll wheel (plus they can manipulate the acceleration of the motor for better scroll feel etc etc)
Honestly thank you, I was seriously looking at one of these because I do not want to go to a bigger phone but I will buy the less expensive one and an SE and save myself the money.
that's mad - remember seeing some renders of this concept way back when around the first gen apple watch, but out of silicon; cool to see someone sorta made it a reality
I can see a design like this working via Accessibility triggers for motion control and selection on the watch, bluetooth controls in the case. Surely a tiny RP2040 or RP2350 based board would be overkill for sensor and bluetooth roles, but quick to prototype with.
4:40 How did you expect this to work? There is no other function on the Apple Watch other than pressing it with your finger. Some magical energy that emanates from the device and presses it for you?
Surely digital/software would be the way to go? Bluetooth scroll wheel + button press? Or does the Apple watch not support/work like that?

Saw an ad for this earlier today and I thought it looked pretty cool. I think it could be a fun use for my current Apple Watch when I upgrade. Hopefully they make a version 2 with a functional button.
Lol. I didn't expect the wheel to be mechanical. But cool attempt. I think just making it such that it becomes a holder for the watch alone would be neat.
I think a bluetooth keyboard and a way to charge the watch through usbc wouldve made this genuinely useful to someone who wants to disconnect like i do.
The Apple Watch has UI elements that are scattered across the screen (Activity, for example, has like four corner buttons and an interaction in the center), unlike how everything is a list on the iPod. There is just no way to navigate through these UIs with a scroll wheel + one button alone without modding the WatchOS. To market (or expect) otherwise is just unrealistic
It’s not their fault. It’s the limitation of the Apple Watch itself. It was never meant to be used that way. It could work if Apple would open up some work around. But as we know Apple being Apple they will never change anything on the os just for an obscure niche accessory.
An old Unbox Therapy episode shows an iPhone accessory which adds an Android-style back button to the bottom bezel; when tapped some current is sent to the top-left area of the screen where the back button is usually located in iOS apps. I don't see why they couldn't do something here; tapping or pressing in the button sends some current to, say, the middle of the screen to make the selection
One of the issues with the scroll wheel is that the Apple Watch UI itself is poor at utilizing the crown, and requires the touchscreen for actual interactive functionality. Even if they managed to make the button press the crown, it would just serve as a home button, because that's all the crown button does.
I don't mind the simple mechanism. I actually like that's mechanical and doesn't try to interfere or work with the software (not that it will be easy or viable) But I can't excuse the cheap casing. They could've used better materials at that pricepoint, even if it's a minimalistic design, aluminum in the casing, or rubber grips. They could've also had a better seal so the oil from the gears doesn't leak. The metal back of the iPods were the standout, because you could engrave them, I would've expected something like that.
This looks like a "project" of a second-year student in an Art or Engineering College. Just ONE component driven by lubricated pulley mechanism. THAT'S IT.. And its costs $79!!!! WHY? HOW do you justify this insane pricing for what's essentially a two pieces of plastics casing, and one pulley?
3:13 ok this proves that this is half assed engineering. They could've attached the rubber to a gear that has the exact same ridges as the digital crown instead of the rubber scrolling it directly, that's what's causing the scrolling inconsistency. and for the scroll wheel, use a gear that also has the same number of ridges but on a larger diameter and spaced out evenly, that way the scroll wheel precisely coverts rotational energy and feels perfectly tactile this is a fun 3D printing project, not at 80$ product.
Apple should just make their own hybrid dumb phone with a telephone keypad and small touchscreen. Phone, maps, text, email, music, podcasts, some of the news and sport apps, YT and a really good camera with usb c.
Honestly, I like using my apple watch without a case or bands or anything. It feels like a spy gadget or something because it's so small that you don't even use your palm to hold it, just your fingers.
The thought of this terrifies me. I’d lose it within minutes. Find it. Lose it. Find it. Leave it in a pocket and end up sticking it in the washing machine
I think the IDEA of this device is really cool but it's also very expensive/difficult to execute well. Would gears be more precise instead of pulleys?
