My favorite Harley ever the FXWG but just the early years, as soon as they took the kick start and chain off the bike that was it for me, was the last real bike they made! Love watching your videos with all the older bikes don't stop making them!
Wow best looking bike Harley ever made still drooling over factory poster hanging on my wall had a 95 wide glide and found I could buy factory customs painted tank and fenders to match this for my 95 candy tangerine flames with root beer if I remember been a long time ago
I bought a brand new 1978 Superglide and drove it for 2 years with no problems, smoking or otherwise. Traded it in for a new FXEF with the 80 incher and put 23,000 miles on it the first year I had it .This was in northern NY where they have tons of snow. I had the mileage verified by the dealer, and again , No problems, smoking or other wise.
My 1983 FXWG had a 85 mph speedometer. I changed to a catseye dash and speedometer 1 year after I bought the bike in 1983. I bought the bike threw the military sales program. I recently went back to stock dash and speedometer. They are reproductions. I have had this bike for 30years. Have had a sifton upper end since 1984!
I have recently purchased a 1947 Harley Knucklehead (last year made) that is "supposed" to have a wide brace front fender. This one, documented since new, came with an earlier narrow brace front fender from the factory. It is how it was bought, new, with a prewar front fender!
Factory literature says mid year 1978 "all" big twins came with the cow pie (rotary lid) transmission. In 1984, big twins came with a single disc, either narrow glides or wide glides; yet I saw in person, on the floor, two 1984 FXST Softtail models with DUAL DISC 1983 style wide glides! When a company runs out of a part, they do not hold a production line up waiting for that part, they use what they already have on stock and send them out the door. As long as it is "close" it is good enough.
I had an 80 80 it had flames but beautiful and an eagle on top the tank there was 1000 painted like mine and mine was # 713. That is an fugley paint job
That bike is not a 100 point off the line machine. However, that being said, 1980 was the conversion year for the 85mph hour speedo. Often, Harley has used previous year parts when the new part was out of stock. The speedo shown was last used in 1979 "officially". Other examples I have owned or seen of such things... I have had two 1979 FXS original paint low mile Lowriders that came with ratchet lid transmissions from the factory.
I just bought this same bike from my cousin.. I'd like to change the bars and buy new tins so I can repaint it without destroying the factory flame paint.. If I keep all the factory parts i replace to possibly be reinstalled later , would this be enough to not suffer the wrath of the motorcycle gods?
Ok man, I honestly haven't even seen it yet as its stuck in his shed till spring.. All I know is it's a 1980 fxwg with factory flame paint, it's ready to ride and I paid less then I did for my efi 1200 custom..
If It goes up for sale, you sir will have first refusal... I mostly bought it cause it kinda reminds me of a 84 low rider shovel my father had when I was in high school
+Todd Roberts due to Federal Mandate, Lead was taken out of the Gas. Lead was used to "cushion" the valves to the seats and guides, a lubricant. Each and every HD made 1977 - 1980 came with bad valves and guides as HD's "fix" did not work and they were sent out with bad valves and guides which promptly galled and caused a lot of billowing smoke. Kept a lot of motorcycle shops in business there for 4 years "fixing" their fuck up
Thanks for the info. An early 80's wide glide has been for sale in my area, and I'm trying to learn more about them. I'm new to motorcycles, and I don't want to buy a really cool looking bike that needs more work than I can afford to fix.
That is not the original speedometer. The original speedometer is 85mph not 120mph. I own a 80 wideglide with flames that i bought new. Thought you should know.

I had an 81 Sturgis model in 1984. Rebuilt the upper end at 15k Miles because of severe smoking lol.
I think the original Wide Glide is far better looking than what came later.
This was the bike that that everyone wanted.......Guys that hated Harley's wanted it.....It sold like hot cakes.....Rarely see them today.

I suggest keeping it stock and buying another shovel to alter. They are cheap
