  • How to install transmission circlips correctly. The direction of installation is crucial to the intended design to secure a gearset location. Installing this wrong can allow the circlip (snap ring) to push off and lock two transmission gearsets simultaneously. Common text used in manufacture recalls is this: IF THE CIRCLIP BREAKS, THE TRANSMISSION COULD LOCK UP, WHICH WOULD ALSO CAUSE THE REAR WHEEL TO LOCK UP. THIS COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL AND A CRASH WITH INJURY OR DEATH.

    It's easy if you think about it. Just throw the whole gears foactory setup and hook up an oil tube to the end if the shaft and an oil pressure guage and pump oil and record the reading while stationay and try with rotation movement. Then start removing gears and doing the same thing. You'll end up with a data chart of how much each gear (if removed ) you'd lose oil pressure. Then you can calculate and start welding shut some holes then do a final pressure test. Hope that was helpful.

      That recall woke a lot of people up. I learned this from Honda training and I can't count the number times people argued it didn't matter. It drove me nuts with a co-worker that used to tell "I've never had a problem". And to be honest prior to that recall I just did what the manual said but after it really looked into the "why".

      @How2Wrench exactly.. imo honda has one of the best breakdowns in some of their Manuals. It'll show each gear..each clip...shift fork..etc and which way the beveled or sharp side goes on the gear stack. I love your channel. Keep up the good work

    I never even thought about this. I just checked all my manuals ('96 RM250, '95 KX250, '02 CR250), and the RM shows the same illustration you had. The CR says "Install the washers and snap rings with the chamfered edge facing the thrust load side." (no illustration). I'm sure I did not follow this and now I'll be paranoid riding it (more than 120 hours no issue so far). And the KX makes no mention of a chamfered edge. It only says: "Be sure that all parts are put back in the correct sequence and facing the proper direction, and that all circlips and washers are properly in place."

    • @How2Wrench
      @How2Wrench  9 месяцев назад +1

      We grabbed Shane quick on this one and he said "So glad to hear you got the right information. Something to think about. The circlip does not care who made it, hence why all transmissions "install with the chamfered edge facing the thrust load side" making the flat edges give the most support as its pushed against. There are a lot of factors the increase the risk, like damaged shift drums and bent shift forks that would allow "more" thrust force.
      We could tell of a hundreds of stories just like yours where there are many hours or miles with no issues but when it breaks, it breaks bad. There is just know advise to give here on what "we would do" without risking something right? Either your life or our reputation. Hope this video gave you for surely what you need for future work or this KX you mentioned".

      @@madmarc The failure can occur at any time but is most pronounced while shifting as you are side-loading it. Centrifugal force alone can cause it to walk out of place.
