Michael Anthony Holding is a Jamaican former cricketer and commentator who played for the West Indies cricket team. Widely regarded as one of the greatest pace bowlers in cricket history, he was nicknamed "Whispering Death" due to his silent, light-footed run up to the bowling crease. His bowling action was famously smooth and extremely fast, and he used his height (6 ft 3+1⁄2 in or 1.92 m) to generate large amounts of bounce and zip off the pitch. He was part of the fearsome West Indian pace bowling battery, together with Andy Roberts, Joel Garner, Colin Croft, Wayne Daniel, Malcolm Marshall and Sylvester Clarke, that devastated opposing batting line-ups throughout the world in the late seventies and early eighties. Early in his Test career, in 1976, Holding broke the record for best bowling figures in a Test match by a West Indies bowler, 14 wickets for 149 runs (14/149). The record still stands. During his first-class cricket career, Holding played for Jamaica, Canterbury, Derbyshire, Lancashire and Tasmania. In September 2021, Holding announced his retirement from being a commentator.

Deadly bowler. Doesn't exult too much after a wicket. That's the greatness of Windies players.!
That time WI was the boss n all other teams were minnows
Mikey Holding off the long run !!! No better sight in cricket…as long as you weren’t facing !
Absolutely Correct.
Holding -- the all time greatest Artist of Fast bolling.
We always like to see great batting - batting of Richards, Sachin, Sobers, Lara etc.
But attraction of the fast bolling of Maikel Holding, used to be matchless.
EXACTLY 💯
Mike Holding the man with the rolls royce run up 🏃
The whispering death ☠
It took 15 years for australia to win a test series against westindies, such was there domination over test cricket. The most fearsome team of all times. They can not even break there own record.
20 years
@@AbdulRehman-ed5lw nope, its 15 years...1980-1995...they lost against newzealand in 1979...and there winning record started from 1980 which continued till 1995....havent lost single test series any where in world....either it was drawn or they win it..
@@adityasaigal8080Even our India's victory in 1983 was an upset & just after that West Indies whitewashed India 5-0 in tests & 6-0 in ODIs in Ind to show them 1nce again that we are the best, which was reality
@@salimali8085 yes...and my father remember that tour...one test match was in Chennai, Chennai stadium pitch was known for spinners...but clive lloyd took four fast bowlers in team, when asked about it, clive lloyd said we will teach them how to play on a spinner track with fast bowlers...and they won that test match too....
LIKE A SERPENT READY TO STRIKE, THE BLOKE WAS SO DECEPTIVE, HE IS JUST TAKING A STROLL DOWN THE PARK, AND BOOOM A MISSILE FROM NO WHERE. BEAUTIFUL TO WATCH.....
Zaheer Abbas wrote in his autobiography that Holding was the fastest of them all.I would like to see footage letting rip against Pakistan where he was bowling flat out at full pace.It was either 1981 or 82,when Imran and Miandad were at the crease.Neither batsman wanted to be on strike. It was terrifying stuff.
According to Boycott - Holding was fastest in his early years.
@Rakesh Mishra Yes,between 1980 and 1982.When Pakistan toured England in 1982,it was said,I think,by Peter West, that Zaheer's face off with Michael Holding left him so traumatised that he considered quitting test cricket.
It should be noted that Zaheer faced Thomson at his fastest, before his shoulder injury.
@@rakeshmishra679
Yes according to him till 1980 he was good bowler. In 1980 holding hostile spell against England made him great bowler
@@davifdavid4347 Zaheer Abbas never thought of quitting cricket due to Holding. He had faced Jeff Thompson and Lilly.
@Sid Sid Oh really! The comment was made by Peter West, the BBC cricket commentator, during Pakistan's tour of England in 1982.It was the first test series involving Pakistan that I ever watched.
You make mention of Lillee and Thomson,of whom I made no reference to at all.I suspect that you have done so to emphasise that in your inconsequential opinion,th e aforementioned were better or faster than Holding.I,therefore, defer to the batsman,Zaheer Abbas, who faced all 3 bowlers in their prime between 1972 and 82.Unlike you,I choose not to lead with biased opinion but, instead, direct you to read Zaheer's autobiography for yourself. When you've done that, come to me with fact and not with what you think.
Michael Holding is my favourite fast bowler, blessed with a beautiful action and athletic run up, I think he's the best that's ever lived!
Same here 👍👍👍
Michael Holding was nicknamed Whispering death i personally haven’t seen Michael bowl No ball poetry in motion.
Hard to believe that with such a simple action, Holding could generate such pace and bounce!! Speaks of his shoulder strength!
Pitch were not like today flat only favour for batsman
I believe that it's more being a rythmn bowler that generates his pace rather than his shoulder strength ; compare with Andy Roberts who uses his shoulder to generate his pace.
@@armstronglaborde Good observation...

Micky is my all time favourite bowler. What a smooth bowling action
@Atul Dubey
Holding is often referred to as *Mikey, but *never* Micky. I assume this was a type o from you.
This is the best action of any bowler I saw throughout my life , the fluidity of the action is amazing and dangerous at the same time.
YOU! GOT! IT! THE! WHISPERING! DEATH! HA! HA! HA!
Leave That bowling... Run-up... TERRIBLY Fast....One Commentator Commented That Holding runs as though he.runs in a.400.M.Race.. Awesome
Yes it is. Infact Holding was selected for Jamaica to represent the country as an 800 meter athlete for the 1976 Montreal Olympics. But by then he had chosen Cricket over Athletics. What a sight he was...
Melbourne and Perth are where the West Indies enjoyed playing most.
MCG & GABBA are the best two grounds for balance between batsmen and bowlers.
Viv Richards favourite cricket ground is the MCG followed by Lords.
thanks a lot my helmet, for taking me out of this opening cruel spell...batsman mind voice
Deceptive, from his runup, looks like medium pace, but at moment of delivery, he becomes menacingly fast.
In the later part of his career after injury he shortened his run up,and bowled a lot of off cutters and was still effective.
He was the legend
Michael Holding's bowling action is bouncy, dangerous and nasty. It is a miracle he didn't kill any batsman in his career.
What would you say about Thompson and Lilee.
Unless you do not wish to remember what Australia did to the West Indies in the 70's. We learn the brutal way of cricket from your Aussies. Suck it up and love it.
Yes he is really quick and deadly
Absolutely
Michael holding was one of the seeds sowed by Australian bowler Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thompson.
While the bounce is scary and cricket is a professional game, at some point I always feel Australians deserve what Thompson and lillee did to the world.
Michael holding was one of the seeds sowed by Australian bowler Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thompson.

Michael holding one of the greatest bowler in the history of the cricket his action was excellent
Maichel Holding bowling style with speed are ultimate . He is legend
As an Aussie kid I loved Thommo and Lillee but I absolutely idolized Holding
Man I am great fan of em, love em, He was way ahead in his time ...look at those temperament
Mr. Michael Holding & Sir Courtney Walsh - the two West Indian quickies had the best run ups ever in the whole cricketing history till date; their run ups towards the bowling crease were no less than the run ups of a stag or an antler, whatever you say. Cricket will remember these two names even after a period of hundred years or so . LEGENDS NEVER DIE .
You have omitted Malcolm Marshall. He had that menacing looking run up. The best I have seen, the Fastest bowler I had seen on the ground.
@@chelladurairamesh3526 Yeah !!! Actually his run up was quite indentical to a serpentine which always used to keep the batters (during his era) guessing that exactly from which angle the delivery was to be delivered ; a unique run up indeed ; paying my earnest respect to the departed soul .🙏🙏🙏🙏
and Ambrose.
@@shaileshdholaria5612 Yeah !!!! I agree with you partly but you know what - SIR CURTLY AMBROSE had been my most favourite bowler since I started to understand the game of cricket but as far as the run up towards the bowling crease is concerned I feel SIR AMBROSE had more of a hopping type which is actually not so smooth to be admired whereas the run ups of SIR WALSH or SIR HOLDING was exceptionally smooth and unruffled ; no doubt SIR AMBROSE had been a great bowler not only during his era but also during the whole History Of Cricket . 🏏🏏🏏🏏🏏🏟️🏟️🏟️🏟️
haan bhai. One english batsman even commented that when Ambrose balls, it feels to him like an apple falling from a huge tree 🤣
Nickname was whispering death run up and action total poetry in motion how anyone faced the windies fast bowlers in this era I don’t know terrifying
Michael holding a beautiful action loved his run up and beautiful delivery stride and copied his bowling action in my school days just awesome
Lucky that I had seen garner, marshal, holding, roberts, thomson & why I certainly feel that sunil gavaskar 32 centuries facing such bowlers are like scoring 100 tons in test cricket.
I too feel the same...it is sad now a days no one comes to Sunnny Gavaskar to know the technique of playing fast bowling..
This video isn't about the boring, sleep inducing Sunil Gavaskar.
@kalyanmitra4996 That's an easy question to answer,,.....he was very short. The lower a player's centre of gravity, the more difficult he is to get out. It explains the success of Bradman,Vishwanath and Tendulkar against fast bowling.
@@davifdavid4347 Whenever the video focus is on a great fast bowler Sunil Gavaskar becomes the main subject.
@jahno7154 Yes,it's true! I usually remind such commentators that Gavaskar was on the losing side of almost every encounter against the W I,and that in those cases where he did well,it was always on the slowest of slow surfaces. It doesn't matter, though, because he was clearly a bitter, bigoted, grudge fuelled loser. I read a part of Gavaskar's autobiography, years ago, called,Sunny Days, and he did not hide his racist stereotype of W I people. I guess the toll of the 1976 Test Match in Jamaica left an indelible print on his mind that he clearly did not get over.
In the summer of 1981-82 in Australia, Michael Holding was arguably at his peak. In three Tests against Australia he took 24 wickets at an average of 14.33 with a strike rate of 35.1 and an economy rate of 2.44.
It's a pity he was not timed between 1980 and 1982,because I am sure he would have gone through the 100mph barrier on a good number of occasions, especially on Australia's fast, bouncy pitches. He felled a good number of Australia's batsmen during those two years.
Maichal holding very nice action world best fast bowler
Mcgraw has best bowling action. Lovely!
@@mohinderkumar7298 McGrath good but maichal holding very fast
I was a young lad at the MCG for this match. Holding was fast. The Australian batsman were clueless against the WI attack.
Great fast bowler Invcibles West Indies. Their slip catching was great those days they hardly missed anything Lloyd , Richards ,greenidge, Haynes with Harper at gully what great fieldsman too
Plus Richardson in slips
What a beautiful and effortless bowling action Michael Holding had.
Beautiful bowling action poetry in motion.
Despite not surviving here Boycott scored an unbeaten century in the second innings.
Holding was an ARTIST.
The best bowling action of the Cricket.
Magnificent bowler, one of many WI speed demons of superb quality. The West Indies were eventually defeated by a change in the rules when their style was not even bodyline, most deliveries were short outside the off stump.
Well said!
With the west indies in their glory domination of cricket , it was not good for the authorities in charge of cricket, so a plan was hatch to blunt the main weapon of the boys, and the rest is history.
I faced him in a match between KC and JC in 1973. JC was 25 all out. His pace and bouncers tore through our batters.
what was his speed ? please reply
@maheshsharma1988 Back in the we had no way of accurately measuring Holdings speed. What I knew as a young 17 year old player he was the fastest bowler I ever faced. His speed, accuracy, and hostility got him into the West Indies team two years later.
@@dennissutherland5072 thanks for replying me
I once met one person who played on that JC team. We were both at Wolmers. He claimed that 12 of the 25 were byes.
He might be right! Many didn't score at all.
A beautiful bowler. It must have been terrifying facing him. Strolled up to the wicket like he was having a warm up in the nets, then down it came like a rocket. Pure athleticism and natural tatent. The Usain Bolt of fast bowling.
Wonderful era of cricket, my childhood memories ❤
Holding. Perhaps the best of the big-name fast bowlers. Loose limbed, perfect action and coordination, he could keep this up for long spells
After the test series with England in 1976,Holding developed a rotator cuff injury to his right shoulder that sidelined him for many months.Thereafter,he rarely bowled fast for long spells but, instead, chose to bowl within himself,as stated in Geoff Boycott's book,IN THE FAST LANE,to preserve his career. When bowling really fast he usually limited such spells to 4 or 5 overs. His words not mine.
Pakistan were due to play the W I,in the Caribbean, in 76,but Holding, due to his rotator cuff injury did not play in that series. In Imran Khan's autobiography, he described that tour as if his players were going to a funeral.Travelling to Test venues he said,'There was no joviality,no chatter and no laughter, only fear. But although getting injured himself,he ordered his batsmen not to take a backward step to the W I bowling because the players that did so,would be put on the first plane back to Pakistan. Whatever people think of I K,he was no coward, and led his men by example, from the front. The same could not be said of Bishan Bedi.
Nevertheless, Imran held Michael Holding up ,almost as a deity and would be the first to say that he was rather glad he never face Holding in a full Test Match series. Holding only ever played against Pakistan in ODIs.
Commentators forgot " Lilleee.... Kill Kill Kill " when Aussies hammered Windies down. GREAT PAYBACK BY HOLDING.
so pleasing to the eyes superb and smooth bowling action
The Eliud Kipchoge of fast bowling-pure legend.
Amazing bouncer, perhaps one of the best you will ever see first up. And then to wash it down, the last wicket with a beautiful yorker
Michael Holding a great combination of rhythmic run up perfect action delivery combined with lethal speed.

Over the years I've marvelled at the athleticism, accuracy, skill,

But in the pantheon of greats in my era no-one has come close to Michael Holding.

But Jofra Archer will hopefully surprise us all.
Fitness and resilience will be the deciding factor
But the expectation
Michael Holding... dangerous with most beautiful wristy deliveries...
When odi pitches used to play like first morning of a test match.
As goes the saying;;;; all good things must come to an end....its pity that the great west indies are nowhere near to their brutal best nowadays.the dangerous combination of mic- holding,Andy Robert's,malcolm Marshall,Joel garner to name a few were a treat to watch.the batsmen around the world heaved a sign of relief after the retirements...NOSTALGIC
Michael Anthony Holding a whispering death, all time great. A boss is always a boss.
He was actually more dangerous than the other fast bowlers. If someone wants to learn fast bowling, learn his action.
My 3 fav bowling actions of all time are Holding, Lee and Thommo ....Im not sure which is the best one, but they were all amazing at their best!
He was aptly nicknamed as "Whispering Death"....
Just imagine how dangerous this game was back then, batsmen had to face brutal fast bowlers without any face cover or arm guard.
No fast bowler still came close to his bowling action. He was just blessed.
My favourite bowler
Such beautiful action - so much so, that he used to hypnotize the batsmen facing him...
The Ferrari sports car of bowling actions - lightning fast, yet smooth as silk -
So massive and deadly attack by Holding 💪💪👍👍
Perfect fast bowler starting from athletic build, classic run up, effortless bowling action and delivery. He was very fast but he gave the impression that theirs always something in reserve to be unleashed on requirement.
I totally agree with you! I think if he wanted to, he could seriously be blind fully faster!
nowadays we are not able to see this type of fast bowling
UNFORTUNATELY! THIS! IS! MICHAEL! HOLDING! HA! HA! HA!
Holding was quick but it was his ability to pick up extra bounce from a normal height (relative to Joel Garner anyway 😂) that made him deadly
Excellent, Pumping
3:06 that commentary killed me. i couldn't anything else after that.
When the pace is really hot, the school boy shots come out.
Yep,Yardley wanted to get out on purpose.
We all miss this west indies fast bowling, since retirement of walsh and ambrose
2:17-2:20 Tony greig super commentary! Fastest and nastiest bowler in the world 😂
World Series Cricket was like the IPL of those times. And without West Indies nobody would come to watch.
Kerry Packer was the original Lalit Modi.
Best bowling action
Run up stealth like a cheetah and menacing at the popping crease to rattle the stumps.
I say this! I think Michael Holding could easily bowl even more faster than this, because he made it look so effortless! Absolutely no strain in his run up and bowling action! I have never seen a bowler, who makes bowling look easily!
Great bowler!
OZ batters look helpless and fearful in front of fiery Holding!
Great Holding
With the yester years of west indies bowling attack even current Australian ir Indian team cannot win. But Kapils Devil won. Thats why 1983 world cup is still the greatest world cup win.

Fast bowling is poetry... Unfortunately such kinda bowling is lacking in modern day cricket. Commercial interests have killed the very spirit of the game i.e. balance between ball and bat.
Can you give any expectations about this proposition?
