This tutorial is awesome! Can you do an episode on how to style map like that? Maptiler has some basic options but not sure how to make it beautiful. Thanks!
Been having so much fun editing videos on Geolayers 3 over the past few weeks thanks to your tutorials, you helped me get through my first 2 years of uni when it came to learning after effects much love ^^ I was wondering how you can get historical themed maps like this onto Geolayers? For example lets say I want to make a history documentary based on the Viking invasion of England in 871 AD, where would be the best place to get such maps for this and how could I import them into Geolayers to be used as a custom background? Many thanks again
Awesome video mate! waiting for the full tutorial video you made for johnny harris of animated Columbus speaking and text appearing into the map! that was unique eye catching graphics to use into other youtube projects, please do make one tutorial sir!
Great tutorial, I've replicated this technique in my own videos. But is it possible to do this with an actual 3D object (i.e obj file) in place of the 2D ship?
Great video! Thanks for this tutorial, it helps us a lot in our work. We would love to know how to style a historical blank map like the one you used! Do you have any recommendations for that? :)
@@BooneLovesVideo yeah super easy. The only thing is currently you need models with baked in textures, hopefully that changes. I did a similar thing in this video, only the ship was 3d and could turn and rock back and forth. It just works like any 3d object in AE. I found the free light wrap plugin by production crate helps blend it into the scene
Hi Boone, is it possible to frame the ship with a null so that the ship is always dead center in the middle of the screen? I'm able to do that the old fashioned way by copy pasting the journey's path to the ship's position then parenting the camera null to the ship's position with all layers in 3D mode. But that doesn't seem to work with the "Nulls Follow Points" method when the ship stays in 2D. Though I can see the advantage of your method in being able to reposition the path easily without having to start from scratch.
I am from the Netherlands, and i have a bit of pet peeves when it comes to the Netherlands to be, in kind, pointing out what is correct, and your trade line started not in Amsterdam. Amsterdam is a bit lower on the coast line. You started in fact at the place Den Helder. There is also a harbour. Just to let you know if interested. I know some people might react with "who cares" and that is fine.
@@BooneLovesVideo Sorry late reply. Lol you are right. I do not have a pet peeve with that though. But now you brought it up......correct it ;-). Lol. You are fine. If you would like to known or would be interested. Netherlands wassss great in trade in the golden age, VOC (Verenigde Oost Indische Compagnie) History. Maybe interesting to look into. Love your vid by the way.
How would I make it so that the object following the path also follow any 3D changes you made on mapcomp? Like tilt for example, I want the object to be 3D instead of following the camera like a 2D object would. I mean it would work for a flat standing image of a ship like the one in the video, but I have a top image of an airplane and it would look weird if it add tilt on camera.
@@BooneLovesVideo I am so dumb. Should have looked through your playlists before asking that question. Thank you for putting up with me! Sorry about that.
My buddy Jack had a great suggestion of using Joysticks and Sliders to create a rig that you could quickly readjust. Or you can simply manually edit the ship layers in a precomp.
1. Open the image in photoshop (or your image editor of choice) 2. Select the moving part, than separate it on a new layer ("new layer via" cut in PS i think) 3. Save it 4. Import into into video editing software on separate layers (align them if you have to) 5. Animate mouth layer with position values and keyframes I'm not sure if i'm 100% correct, i'm just writing this from memory, but thats the gist of it
@@MrTeaLover Did you change anything in the project? Those presets use Layer Styles, which can be finicky regarding render order. So the color control is still your original color in the Effect Controls panel?

Please make date header tutorials for historical videos. Where you have a cool header showing the year etc. of the topic in the video.

How did I never know about the "create nulls from paths" script? Thanks a bunch for that tip.
Oh man, it's great. In fact, I think it's my favorite tool in AE.
Awsome! 😍😍
but how I can create similar vintage map looks?
what colours did you use?
thanx
Thanks for this great vid. Soon I will be making Kings and Generals quality Lol.
Thank you very much

I make educative videos about history, and can safely say i learnt a lot from your map tutorials
Thanks
For sure.
I tried this with the new AE beta where you can import obj files, very cool.

Hi Boone, may I know what type of map in geolayers that you used here? 😁
Hello! Pretty sure this was a very custom MapBox rig.
Hi Boone, is it possible to frame the ship with a null so that the ship is always dead center in the middle of the screen? This is a super deep topic that I really can't explain in one comment. This subject is so complex, it would require an entire tutorial.
Where do you get the map?

You should also take note that these boats are larger than your entire country.

Really helpful video. Is it possible to make money to create this type of map?
How do you animate the camera in after effects? There’s no one covering how to animate a 3-d camera specifically for a still image 😳
Have you seen this series that I made?

Hi, when I zoom out, the ship gets bigger, and when I zoom in, the ship gets smaller. It should be the opposite. How can I fix this? Thank you.

One question, can't we use auto orientation to 3d model(the ship) ?
You can, but since it's a flat 2d plane image, I doubt it will look very good. But it's worth a try!
Does anyone know why my ship disappears when I attach it to the null?
