People watch too many movies or at least overthink this stuff. If this is a urban get home bag it shouldnt be any bigger than a fanny pack. If it really gets that bad out there im getting to my family asap which means im running or at least jogging. Light and quick is key. 90% of that stuff isnt needed. I get people like gear but realistically im not stopping for anything until im reunited with my family.

One thing about the solar powerbank. I used one but I don't think they are really reliable. Takes like ages to charge them and most of the time they are not exposed to sunlight. So I do carry and EDC a standard power bank plus one that works with AA batteries. I replaced parts of my EDC/bugout/get home with flashlights, LED, electric fan, etc that work with AA or AAA batteries. Makes it much easier, as I don't need to charge all of them regularly and they are interchangeable.

Great idea but given the snowstorm scenario posed at the front end "I'm not going to sit in my car and wait for something to happen" are the famous last words of someone who dies from hypothermia thinking getting back to their guns is a priority. 95% of congestion has to do with natural disasters and accidents, 5% are well publicized riots that can be avoided. Plan for the realistic thing, not Red Dawn. Your car is safer than braving a blizzard with a tiny bag.

The only cold spell that he experienced was 5C (41F). His idea of a get home bag is a "trip to the cabane in the woods" pack. Think, if your car breakdown in the middle of a highway, are you planning to sleep under the Stars? What happens if it rains? You'll be soaked. Hypothermia will settle in, and you'll die frozen in the middle of Summer. You need a Tarp or an Emergency Blanket to keep you out of the Elements. He doesn't have fire making kit for fear that someone could see him. Hmmm! If you have your face inside your Get-Home-Bag, it means that you need help. So, you want to be seen. A Get-Home-Bag is for peace time not for war time unless you are a draft dodger trying to go home. He has a gun. To do what? To attract more rioters to kill you? Get a slingbow instead. It's lethal, quiet and less heavy. Avoid Trouble as much as possible. Don't look for trouble, you will lose. You are not Rambo. Amazing how he has no clue about Survival?

They have 100 guns, knifes axes but no plan, no shovel no way of staying warm etc you can’t shoot a natural disaster. Maybe you in America are less likely to help each other and more likely to shoot each other than we are in Europe. My get home bag contains auto & tire repair gear to deal with a dead battery or flat tire, because we can't rely on AAA to show up during an emergency. If I have to leave my car I can quickly dump these items out to lighten the bag. My jump starter battery also doubles as a cell phone or flashlight charger. I also carry extra cheap flashlights to hand out to anyone I may be traveling with, because four eyes are better to spot a threat than two. Why walk home alone?

Nice kit, but honestly, you shouldn’t drink out of a container you completely ‘dunked’ (your words)because the contaminants are still on-hand outside, the opening that you used to fill, and more importantly, the port that will be touching your mouth if you don’t sterilize those surfaces before drinking thru your filter.

Way more people die after leaving their car than they do staying in their car. The common theme in all these videos is people seem to think it's going to be 70 degrees. If it's 10 degrees and you leave your car with just a "get home" bag, the chances are excellent they'll find you later frozen to a tree. Your car is shelter. You should have supplies to shelter in your car. The ONLY time I would leave my car is an EMP that shuts down everything. And there will not be roving bands of raiders on the road in the first few days, except for the person walking the dog in the park behind you. Watch out!!!

I’m gonna keep going to every one of these videos where someone talks about not looking tactical. Is it important not to look all tactical? Depends on the situation. Non-permissive, governing authority/police state type deal? Yes, probably want to look like an everyday dude. In SHTF EVENT that caused you to go from your truck/car to get home…. NOBODY CARES what you look like. They have their own problems.
If you’re the guy, who’s down and out, and you’re thinking, “he looks like a tactical person, might have some good stuff, I’m gonna shoot him to take his stuff”… then you are ALSO the person who says, “look, dude by himself with a backpack, I’m going to shoot him to take his stuff”. There is zero reason you could justify shooting a tactical person with a backpack vs a “regular” person with a backpack when you “need stuff” or are “looking for a come up”. Therefore, it doesn’t matter what the hell you look like or the type of pack you’re wearing (to an extent. Don’t be the guy with a 150 lb ruck because it causes attention and you’re a slow, easy target at that point), or the color of clothes per say. Wearing FULL camo in an urban area? Yeah probably don’t do that. Wearing khaki, coyote, ranger green anything or maybe just some M81 shorts or pants with a whatever color top? No one cares….
I feel like the people who say this just heard it somewhere and repeat it. Yes, situation and mission dictate Loadout. However… for a get home situation, it really doesn’t matter. The same people that would shoot you for looking tactical would shoot you for looking like a soft target. Wear what gives you the capability you need to get home from wherever you might be. If we’re talking, your job has you travel to the other side of a populated metroplex like DFW, and it’s a 60-70 mile trek from that place to your house? That’s multiple days on foot, and maybe your line 1 needs to be able to hold stuff in pockets, and tactical stuff LOVES it’s pockets. If you’re 11 miles from home? Barring some extreme weather conditions, you probably don’t need a lot and you could PROBABLY make that trek in your work clothes with a decent pair of shoes.
Don’t worry about looking tactical. People notice now when all is peaceful. When all goes to hell, they have their own shit to worry about, their own problems, and their own desire to do what people do when it’s almost guaranteed that the police aren’t coming.
