I spent 4 years in Mexico and got robbed 3 times for a total loss of about $5K. Three men came on my boat at 2am and stole my new dinghy motor. Two men came on my boat during the day and took my generator. The worse was being held hostage and released for $500 dollars. Never got robbed once during 50 in the USA.
When you travel in Bali it’s a pretty common thing that the police puts up a road block and comes up with something to get money out of you. The first time this happened to me I was so shocked and just payed whatever they asked for. Then the locals told me what a pain this is and that the best thing to do would be to pretend you didn’t see them and keep driving. I couldn’t believe it but the next time it happened I did exactly that and guess what… nobody came chasing after me. Because yes, they were looking for an easy catch. Chasing someone would be too much hassle. 😉
I have had similar experiences in Baja. Staying cool, joking, and pretending you don't quite get it eventually leads to them giving up on the dumb gringo. Has worked thus far but it is not fun. Having valuable stuff does not help. Saludos y abrazos :-)
I’ll give you a pro tip: Here in Mexico its an actual meme that if you come across a “military man wearing sneakers or sport shoes” is always a bad sign. A true solider or policeman is never going to wear that kind of footwear, only military boots
Hey guys! Fellow gringo here! I lived in Mexico for about 8 years, it was an amazing time and the people and food are amazing! 90% of the time nothing happens, and knowing Spanish will make that almost 99% of the time that people will respect you and let you do your thing..Caution though.. I was living in Chiapas and some cyclists from Europe got robbed and killed, unfortunately, it was a big deal on local news as things like that don't normally happen. So be safe and stay near Coutas and bigger cities if you can, enjoy the amazing Mexican landscape and I hope you guys the best!
This is something that I sometimes think about. We want to cycle around the world and you hear a lot of stories from people who have been robbed or similar. It's WAY more common to hear of people that did a big trip without anything sketchy at all happening, but the rare bad occurrences that people report often stick with you as sort of a "what if" mentality.... We've only toured extensively here in Australia and the most we've had to deal with is bad drivers in big pickup trucks (or "utes") - a couple of which tried to fight me... We've had a couple of bad vibes from sketchy people hanging out at a couple of campsites, but if we ever don't like the look of something, we just keep moving. I guess it's not an adventure without some sort of risk!
I got my bike and most of my belongings stolen in Chile while I was doing a South America tour. Thankfully I was just asleep and there was no dangerous confrontation. Most of it is crime of opportunity.
Way to stay level headed in the moment and still trust goodness first. I think taking the time to reflect before y’all commented at the end was wholesome. Sometimes there’s shadiness, but way to diffuse. Good vibes always win. I gotta say too, we lost our first pooch Sir Charles yesterday and seeing Mira splash around was good for the soul. Keep choosing adventure and bringing us along 🤙
Another great video Ryan. I'm glad you used good judgment and travel wisdom to deal with that one potential robber. Ive been luck to travel all over the world and I will say this: for every one potential robber there are thousands upon thousands of locals world wide that are helpful, kind, generous, full of love and share great energy. "The world is a family". I love Mexico and all the wonderful and friendly locals I have met there. Man, your meals alone are taking me back to great memories. Best of luck on your journey. Cant wait for the next episode.
Glad you were able to avoid the robbery...I never would've stopped to chat with the sketchy guy. In Mexico City, I never stopped or made eye contact with most folks and they mostly left me alone. Your language skills are definitely a bonus!
I drove that road a long time ago, 1974, but I don't really remember the road. The views are familiar in my memory, and like you, I remember the people being very friendly and eager to help. I would love to return on a bicycle, and maybe as my recovery progresses, I will be able to.
Fabulous upload again Ryan. I refuse to watch your films on my phone, it’s a waste! Always on the tv and that’s when you get to truly appreciate them. Great stuff👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
So glad to see John & Mira back with you Ryan. Our son is in Mexico as I write and he had only been there a few days when we read 4 beheaded buried bodies had just been uncovered so we told him to be careful but now knowing you have lived there and loved it its kinda reassuring to know.
Amazing video. Fantastic scenery. Good to see you guys are out there. About the situation, this sort of thing could happen anywhere. Not just Mexico. You handle it well. Glad to see you are safe. Keep the good spirits but also keep your guard up ✌️❤️
Crazy! We just spent 4 months cycling through Baja and mainland Mexico and we loved our time there. Everyone treated us very welcomed and not once did we feel threatened. Happy it all worked out and happy cycling. Viva Mexico! ~Ron y Petra
Ryan. Very much enjoying your adventure with John and Mira. It's a delight to see you communicate with the locals in their native language. You have a very kind way of communicating and I believe it was your native communication skills that allowed you to negotiate your way out of a potential dangerous situation. Have fun and safe travels!
Totally blown away with scenery, my mom is from Durango & would tell me of so many places with beautiful views & the food & locals very welcoming, i don’t think the cartels would mess with gringos after what happened in chihuahua , Mexican government would come down hard on local cartels , no tolerance, Safe travels , your Mexico vlogs are so soothing & inspiring, plan to take a trip to Durango in the summer & visit my uncle & aunts ,haven’t seen them in over 20 years , safe travels
Mexico is amazing! Yes, there's one dodgy person in a million or three, wherever you are in the world. Boulder? Many dodgy folk there! Glad you're ok and you're moving on.
What the cycling enthusiast on here has to remember, is the weight of Johns bike even w/o Mira in the basket. Think for a minute, those are mountains they are climbing. John is a legit "Iron Man" struggles or not. Anyone remember the weight of Johns bike loaded w/o Mira? With Mira? Glad things turned out well for yall.
Glad you three are safe and all is well ! This is a great adventure as it unfolds ! Mira does have a certain magic about her, a gift that all dogs seem to have ! Great video !
Well done Ryan and John. You handled the situation judiciously and you have learned now how to deal with such a situation if it ever happens again. Thanks for emphasizing the good in people and the good in Mexico. We need more of that in the world! Best from Munich, Germany
Wow, so brave of you to be traveling the back roads of Sinoloa territory...however the scenery is breathtaking. Maybe it's time to revise the morning chant to "no crashies, no flatties, no whammies, NO ROBBIES"😎

Ryan, thank you again for sharing your adventure and the candid experience. I have heard of a similar experiences and it did sound like you handled it well. The individual I know that is fluent in Spanish, pretended to not understand and the guy eventually gave up. Really tough ride, but Mira was still ready to play. Border collie energy. Enjoy and ride safe…Ted
@@duzer I just feel touched with every video. I got priority Bike, even wrote to them about how you have positively influenced get our there. God bless you Ryan.
As a woman solo bike tourer since more than 20 years, I know this feeling. Rarely, but too frequently in the same time, there’s a guy asking “”well, do you want some company tonight…?”. You think quickly about the right way to answer, politely but firmly, hiding your discomfort (sometimes your fear), and pray that he doesn’t follow you… Sometimes, you choose to skip stealth camping that night, just to calm down the slightly weird feeling inside and have a good sleep. It sucks, isn’t it? But I keep travel solo on bike, because that’s the best way to understand and appreciate people you visit!
All tours on anything are great more so on the bicycle and ungotunately it takes one incident sometimes to ruin the experience. Fortunately you guys had each other and it helps than being alone. Great bike tour and beautiful scenery and country. Cheers.
Thanks for sharing. I know that was hard because we both prefer to see the good in others. ( and most are) stay safe, have fun, and keep up the good work!
Sad to hear that you, John and Mira had to go through that experience. Bad people can be found everywhere sadly. Not just in Mexico, the States, Asia or Europe. Thievery and intimidation does not solely apply to any one country or region. I hope that this does not affect your worldview too much Ryan. it would be a pity to see that happen but in some ways understandable. Now to the riding. I say it is pretty damn good job to keep that pace up that amount of climbing with loaded bikes, and in Johns case; one very active Canine. I usually like a good climb, provided it is not too steep and I can maintain a decent pedalling pace up towards the top. Because I know that what comes after is usually worth the climb. A sweet fast downhill! I can only dream of climbing hills which are a multiday effort! Keep on turning those pedals Ryan, John and Mira!
Ryan I shared your video with my father and he said that the town of Copala is not that far from his home town of Concordia. The town name of Copala means "Tree gum or sap" its known for the gum tree sap to make chewing type gum and other products. The river you crossed before arriving in Copala is a river I have played in as a boy and as recent as 1998 when I last went back to Concordia to my grandmother funeral. If you even travel to mazatlan again or Concordia my father and I have a. cousin who owns a hotel and a gas station in Mazatlan and in Concordia. Also if you ever go to La Paz in Baja California "Beautiful countryside and state" we have family there you can stay with. I truly can not believe what a small world this is. Never in a million years I thought I would be watching some random video and see the town of Concordia on RUclips. Stay healthy my friend and glad you are recharged and doing well again. P.S. Did you see the mountain on the way into copala called "Elephants Back"?? its before the river crossing.
Phew! Glad all turned out well! Being able to speak the language is a definite bonus. So funny seeing ironman John sucking gas, but I guess climbing all day will do that to a person.
Amazing views, it was fun to watch. We can't wait for the next movie. We love your movies. We wish you all the best on your way. Greetings from Poland, Pawel and Kasia🤗😉😁
Hi Ryan, I really enjoy your videos, especially the ones with lots of mountain scenery and very few people. That would be the ride I'd do as well. I also think you do a great job choosing music to go with the drone and long mountain shots. Well done from a fan in Wisconsin.
Love your videos. I road cycle and not a very strong one and when I'm struggling going up a hill I just envision when you do a close up of your legs cycling and imagine all the weight of your bike and it empowers me just keep peddling forward- thank you for that. I used to do a lot of Spartan Races and am a big fan of Amelia's openness and positive energy. Following you and now the two worlds have merged-congrats on that. Glad everything turned out okay. You guys handled it wonderfully. 💪🔥💪
Glad you are safe. I was on a college climbing trip in northern Baja in the early 70’s and we were shook down by National Guard at a check point outside 40 miles south of the border. I have been harassed in NE Wyoming and Southern Montana out on some county roads through most of folks I meet out there are wonderful. And I have in few shakedowns in Denver and Tucson, so there are pockets of interesting humanity everywhere.
I just road this section on my pan American trip. Probably the most beautiful section of road I’ve hit so far. Absolutely magical views and mythical switchbacks. There is an epic section called “the Devil’s Spine”. An all time cycling climb. Thanks for letting me relive my experience through your video!
@@duzer just got to it and binged the rest of the series! Awesome stuff man!!! I also took the 45 from Durango because of all the local advice and I’m currently in zapateca. Passed by the hostal in your video there too.
Glad you all are ok. Hopefully there are no more bad experiences. I’ve had a couple of dicey experiences on the Baja with something stolen, and once a threatening request for money but no money was given and the guy gave up and walked away. Scary though. Please be careful!
Thank you for sharing this experience with us. This could happen anywhere, not just in Mexico. I've only ridden in Canada, but on my last bike tour, someone attempted to steal my touring bike during the night. That was a scary experience, but that was just one incident in the midst of very positive ones. I'm glad nothing happened to the thee of you and that the travels continue.
That was an unnecessary situation. That guy doesn't understand how serious of an injury a wheel spindle to the head can cause....." by accident of course!" "...or how nasty a properly filled Borito can be when shoved down a man's ears."😬🤞 I'm so sorry you guys had this unfortunate experience. Soldier on boys. Looking forward to the next episode Ryan.🌈💚💪
Wow. You told this story at the live event the other day. Scary stuff. I think Mira might have saved you guys. Even thieves have a soft spot for Mira! Ya never know. But like you say, isolated incident. The vast majority of Mexico & Mexicans are safe. 🇲🇽 Still, glad you 3 made it thru that sketchy moment unscathed. Looking forward to the next vid in the series! 👍🏼
the vast majority of Americans are ok...just don't ride through dangerous places that ALL U.S. cities are know for. When Americans point a negative finger at other countries they fail to look in their own back yard...
@@silviosuarez495 That was exactly my point. EVERY Country can have such potential dangers, but the vast majority of Countries & places are much safer than anything you read about online. Just as one should never worry about shark attacks or getting hit by lightening just because you saw a video online about it. 😉
Wow what an adventure!! You guys can shmooze your way out of anything with Mira around. Mira probably sensed the tension and knew this guy was different. Great views and a reminder to stay safe good lesson to learn. :) :)

So I noticed that John's shirt had those white streaks on and you mentioned salt and all. I get those white streaks on tank tops all the time when I sweat a lot so does that mean I'm lacking salt when I sweat too much?
I live with that feeling of not trusting everything and being on guard all the time it is such a bad focus to have, and I'm trying to focus on a better disposition than that, but that is what PTSD and having a traumatic event or trauma experiences do. SUCKS can't wait till the trauma will stop.
I was so nervous reading the title of you video. I'm so thankful that you are all safe and wiser for the experience. Sending lots of good karma to John & Mira for the remainder of their journey. Does John speak Spanish? Or will we hope for the "power" of Mira to protect them?
27:19 I love Mexico ... the people, the culture, the landscape ... everything. I biked up and down the west coast of Mexico in 1982. The day that I crossed the border, the Peso crashed. It was horrible for the Mexican people, but it helped me to extend my stay in Mexico more than twice as long as I had been planning on staying. On a side note: While I was living down there, a university professor and several of his students who had been on an archeological dig who were from the United States, had been murdered (machete'd to death) and had later been found buried in shallow graves somewhere near Tepic, Nayarit. That was a bit scary for me and a few of my new friends I had met while living in the small fishing village of Santa Cruz, Nayarit. I had met two young Canadian hippie chick's who had been in a circus and who taught me how to juggle. I also met a young German guy who also lived in the village ... and then there were several ex-Vietnam vets from the U.S. who also lived in Santa Cruz who had become ex-pats, one of whom had married a very nice Mexican lady, the two of whom had started their own fried chicken restaurant. So, aside from those horrible murders, Mexico has always been a country that I hold dear to my heart.
We can't let the "what ifs" control our adventure. The fact that you're both bilingual is probably an incredible bonus as well. So many of us arm-chair warriors are sending good karma your way. Be safe, be strong and ride on. p.s. over 7,000 vert in one day???? You are beyond animals!
I remember those "suicide showers" in Costa Rica several years ago on a mission trip. I took a few cold showers until I figured out how to make it work right.
Ryan, I'm glad you guys got through the scam situation without a problem from the guy wanting to take your phones. Perhaps this guy wasn't trying to steal your phones as much as disable your ability to communicate about the surroundings that you would traverse. Perhaps he was a cartel member and didn't want any discovery to take place of their presence ahead? He may have liked the idea that you were going to change your direction because that would have alleviated any concern he had about your plan to pass through the area he is concerned about.
We’re so thankful that everything turned out ok. The magic of Mira kept us safe. Has anyone out there had a similar experience?

Never in a million years I thought I would be watching some random video and see the town of Concordia on RUclips. Stay healthy my friend and glad you are recharged and doing well again. P.S. Did you see the mountain on the way into copala called "Elephants Back"?? its before the river crossing.
Phew! Glad all turned out well! Being able to speak the language is a definite bonus. So funny seeing ironman John sucking gas, but I guess climbing all day will do that to a person.
So very happy to see you back on the bike and doing what you love. Thank you!
Thanks, Sally
Great to see everyone is ok. Yeah that’s why sometimes it’s good to have a burner with you for emergencies. I’ve regretted a few times not having one.
Keep trusting people. You are safe. Keep biking along with John and Mirra. I enjoy your video.
Thanks!! You know we will continue to lead with love
Even in a sketchy situation if you put out positive light the darkness may leave you alone .
I believe it!
I know he is like the second coming of Jesus christ.
Amazing views, it was fun to watch. We can't wait for the next movie. We love your movies. We wish you all the best on your way. Greetings from Poland, Pawel and Kasia🤗😉😁
Thank you for sharing the views of your ride through Mexico. Stay safe on your travels.
I think these latest Mexico videos are some of the most entertaining yet. Safe travels hombre 🤙
Great to hear that you’re enjoying them! More to come
Hi Ryan, I really enjoy your videos, especially the ones with lots of mountain scenery and very few people. That would be the ride I'd do as well. I also think you do a great job choosing music to go with the drone and long mountain shots. Well done from a fan in Wisconsin.
Thanks! I love finding the right songs to match the vibe
💪🔥💪
Good morning my friend Ryan, good to see you and john and Mira together again. Safe journey.
You guys handled that situation superbly. Duzer knowing Spanish was plain disarming.
That could have gone sideways. Glad you guys are ok. Thanks for the content of the scenery. Amazing😍
So true. Very thankful that it didn’t
Really Beautiful Camera Work in this series!
ALWAYS enjoy watching your videos in my recording studio lol. the state line dances BOOOOMMM LOL
I just road this section on my pan American trip. Probably the most beautiful section of road I’ve hit so far. Absolutely magical views and mythical switchbacks. There is an epic section called “the Devil’s Spine”. An all time cycling climb. Thanks for letting me relive my experience through your video!
It’s such a beautiful area!! Devils spine is in my next video
@@duzer just got to it and binged the rest of the series! Awesome stuff man!!!
I also took the 45 from Durango because of all the local advice and I’m currently in zapateca. Passed by the hostal in your video there too.
Speaking fluent Spanish, being calm and having Mira saved you. Speaking fluent Spanish, definitely so not just a typical gringo to them.
This place is so peaceful! Lovely walk my friend! Thanks for sharing!
Glad you’re safe! Big belly laugh at the state line dance with John.
What happened when they tried to steal it? We’re you camping and they tried to cut a lock or something ?
That was an unnecessary situation. That guy doesn't understand how serious of an injury a wheel spindle to the head can cause....." by accident of course!"
"...or how nasty a properly filled Borito can be when shoved down a man's ears."😬🤞
I'm so sorry you guys had this unfortunate experience. Soldier on boys.
Looking forward to the next episode Ryan.🌈💚💪
What a beautiful trip so far.
I like to believe that Mira was our guardian angel ;)
the vast majority of Americans are ok...just don't ride through dangerous places that ALL U.S. cities are know for.
Lovey looking area . Thanks for taking me along.
Great video . Happy for you guys that you made it out safely
Wow what an adventure!! You guys can shmooze your way out of anything with Mira around. Mira probably sensed the tension and knew this guy was different. Great views and a reminder to stay safe good lesson to learn. :) :)
Another fantastic episode. I’m really digging this series.
Thanks!! Love to hear this
Great vid Ryan, absolutely beautiful out there 😍
That’s crazy I’m glad you were with John! I think that helped two guys versus one. But wow views on views. Keep climbing!
HI RYAN JOHN & MIRA 👋
THAT WAS A REALLY HARD WORK OUT UP THE MOUNTAINS ⛰ I'M REALLY GLAD YOU ENDED UP SAFE ! MIRA LOOKED SO CUTE IN THE PUDDLE OF WATER 💧 HOPEFULLY EVERYONE WAS ABLE TO GET A SCARY SHOWER / MIRA INCLUDED , L.O.L. THE FOOD LOOKED REALLY GOOD FUN WATCHING 👀 THEM MAKE IT . BREATHTAKING BEAUTY COLORS VIEWS SCENERY VIDEO 📹 LANDSCAPE DRONE FOOTAGE TOO 👌
RYAN I AGREE ABOUT TRYING TO TRUST PEOPLE AROUND YOU ! BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! ENJOYED 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 THANK YOU 🙏 GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ON YOUR ADVENTURES 🙏
When we were there with our camping car, we were warned for Durango area atleast but nothing happened. Stay safe and glad that all went well at the end.
Yeah, we got warned constantly, you’ll see that in the next video
So I noticed that John's shirt had those white streaks on and you mentioned salt and all. I get those white streaks on tank tops all the time when I sweat a lot so does that mean I'm lacking salt when I sweat too much?
Absolutely love your bike packing trips! Quick question, how often do you stop for a snack, when on multiday trips? Thanks!
Only a couple channels that I hit the like button before watching! Never disappoint! (Glad no one was harmed)
I live with that feeling of not trusting everything and being on guard all the time it is such a bad focus to have, and I'm trying to focus on a better disposition than that, but that is what PTSD and having a traumatic event or trauma experiences do. SUCKS can't wait till the trauma will stop.
Luv John's comment 'the guy had a good costume'!
John is a witty guy
Your videos are amazing! Keep up the great work.
Glad you three escaped unscathed. Shaken, but now wiser. Very good to hear!
A little wiser every day, hopefully ;)
Those rough, pitted, steep asphalt roads can really wear you down and all you can hear is the tires getting chewed up. Some fabulous views though.
omg, sound worries and the town is so quiet too. Glads you all are safe.
I was so nervous reading the title of you video. I'm so thankful that you are all safe and wiser for the experience. Sending lots of good karma to John & Mira for the remainder of their journey. Does John speak Spanish? Or will we hope for the "power" of Mira to protect them?
Karma is superstition.
On a side note:
While I was living down there, a university professor and several of his students who had been on an archeological dig who were from the United States, had been murdered (machete'd to death) and had later been found buried in shallow graves somewhere near Tepic, Nayarit.
That looked like a tough day, bummer about the shakedown. Well done handling it.
Thanks, it was a good wake-up
Glad you're all safe, guys.
Greetings from Birmingham, UK.
Thanks! Close call
Thanks! We shook it off fairly quickly, gotta do that if you wanna be present and enjoy all the magical moments
Always a few bad apples on any route…ride safe! Nice vid!
I remember those "suicide showers" in Costa Rica several years ago on a mission trip. I took a few cold showers until I figured out how to make it work right.
They’re sketchy!! Haha. We had them in Honduras as well ;) but when they work, it’s soooo nice
Good thing you guys are okey. Stay and ride safe. Enjoy 😉
