Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together.
I started my woodturning journey by watching all of your videos and even though I watch many other popular makers on youtube, I always come back to your stuff for inspiration. Between your skills and creativity and Robin's camerawork you are an awesome education team. As a video professional I do not think there are many others doing the same level of video production as you are doing. The closeups are very helpful in leaning about angles for the tools and of course the drama of the slow-mo can never be understated. The music is great and you keep your introductions short. Keep up the great work and stay safe. Maybe one day you will venture further east and visit makers in Pennsylvania. Thanks.
Thank you so much Jonathan! Your kind words are so encouraging! Our followers are awesome, although when we get a video that gets some traction we get some pretty mean comments! They get to me sometimes, but not enough to change our style! Thanks again for noticing the hard work we put into every video ❤️
Thank you so much Jonathon! That really means a lot!! We try to make them entertaining and educational. Hopefully once we get a handle on this we can travel further east! Stay safe and take care!

Thanks, you too!
That #1 hollower looks like it just might be your favorite tool
It's in the top 1% :)
I love the way it looks. You did a very good job.

Really fantastic design, I love it. Great video, really entertaining, thank you for sharing
Thank you very much!
When you were mounting the burl on your lathe I thought to myself, "Oh man, don't cut away the rough end of that beautiful chunk of wood!" Thank you so much for not making the entire box all smooth and "pretty"! And thee finial you fashioned for it is just as perfect for this box. Absolutely beautiful work Carl.
Thank you so much David!!
I like that you left the lid spikey
Thank you Lisa!!
Nice piece Carl.
Thank you John!!

Really nice job there Carl. Love those burls! 👍
Thank you Mark!
One thing that I wish for is access to cheaper burls like this!
Beautiful... 👌👌👌👌👌
Thank you!!
Beautiful
Thank you Keith!
Beautiful!! Love the finial!
Thank you so much Steve!!
Beautiful box, Carl! I love this style of turning, and that finial is just perfect! I enjoy your, as Nick Zammeti would say, “waffling” at the end. Cheers! ✌️
Thank you so much David!!
love it.
Thank you Jennie!
Parabéns amigo um lindo trabalho
Como sempre
Muito obrigado!!
I always strived to be the last 5% Finally met my goal.. great piece. And I’m going to check out that carving stand! 👍👍
lol Thank you Jake! You're going to love it!!
Outstanding Carl. I love the finial. Very interesting shape. Looks like a flame. Do the next one from redheart. The only downside, all that beautiful wood from the inside of the box is shavings on the floor. It's a shame there isn't some way to core something this size. Can you post a link to the source of the burl? Thank you for sharing and please stay healthy.
Thank you very much Glen!! Her's the link, Worldwide Burl

Needless to say, "Excellent" as usual.
Sometimes I use the Cole Jaws to grip the inside of a bowl/box. Saves wasting wood on a jam chuck. Weirdness...that's how you view others as you age. LOL!!
Cliff
lol Thanks a lot Cliff!!
I really like it Carl. I’ve been trying and trying to get a Chuck for my lathe for a few years now and still no luck but to be fair, I think my lathe is somewhat inferior compared to some I’ve seen here on RUclips so I guess I’ll start saving for another one and repurpose my old one to a disc sander lol great video mate 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you Ian!! I think most new lathes are 33mm over there?
That looks amazing Carl! I'm going to keep my eye out for the auction. I definitely need to get a carving stand as it's no fun carving while the piece is still on the lathe. Have a blessed day! - Ed
Thank you Ed!! Yes this carving stand is a life saver!!
Hey, I love the top of this box, just as it turned out. To me, the unevenness gives it personality! The finial is awesome! Great work!
Thanks so much Bob!
Ouch! ouch ouch! , , , ouch! !! No really Carl, that is a beauty. Gotta have a jibber jabber waffle sometime. Me, I talk rubbish all the time. Best regards.
lol Thank you John!! I just watched back, and it looks like I had more to say than my brain could handle! Take care!
Nice box
Thank you!!
Beautiful burl box Carl! Well done! 👍
Thank you very much Tim!!
Hey guys hope all is well . Beautiful piece Carl . Okay I watch all the way to the end there's the bloopers lol take care .
lol Thank you buddy!!
Great work as usual, love the burl. stupid question but where did you get those magnetic strips for you chuck jaws?
Thank you so much! I picked them up at Ikea years ago. I found them in the kitchen department for knives.
Wow!! Freaking awesome brother!!
Thank you Eric :)
Love the box Carl and that finial is the cherry on the top .
Great work Carl and cheers, Bram
Thank you Bram!! Cheers buddy!!
Thanks Carl. Love the box and finial but I really like the technique you show on approaching pieces.
Thank you very much Mike!!
So Cool!! I have some ebony piano keys. You gave me an idea, Thanks!!
Awesome! Thank you Lewis!!
I'm with David Spinelli . I. Really like that rough end? I'm just a newbie, so how do you accomplish that end? Thanks. Great piece
Hi guys! Thank you Ken, it's the burn cut it's all natural.
An other great video brother ! And extras in the end ! Those types of wood that you use is so amazing I never see in Greece something like that we have just olive wood !!! Have a great week brother !
Thanks again Brother!! I was lucky to find this beautiful piece.
Weird! We're both posting up maple and ebony pieces today :D I have to say that the finial is particularly fine, really sets the piece off well. I'm not normally a fan of chunky finials, but that one has proved that they can be done very tastefully. A great piece overall!
Thank you brother!! I'll check it out!
Stunning piece Carl. Stay safe my friend.
Thanks brother, you guys stay safe as well.
Really lovely shape Carl, I like the up and down lid, it adds character.
Cheers
Jim
Thank you very much Jim!!
Carl, That wood is special. And you made a great piece of art using it. Thank you for sharing it with us.
Thank you very much buddy!!
Gorgeous little box...I just turned a bowl from a maple burl cap.
That is awesome! Thank you very much Carol!!
This is a beautiful piece, Carl, beautiful grain pattern and colouring. Keep on Jibbering, mate, it's natural and it's you. They wouldn't be your videos without it. Stay well and stay happy.
Thank you so much Ron!!
Great looking box. At some angles, it looks like a baby bird coming from a nest
Thank you so much Steve!!
Beautiful piece, I loved the top with the Swan movement And its natural burl shape, thanks!
Thank you very much Yossi!!
Just wonderfully made! You do purty work! Be safe, be cool! Beach, NC
Thank you Bobby!! :) Take care!
Awesome woodworking. Love your work.
Thank you very much!
I still like your "weird" =) I would love to see a walk-through of your home and just talking about the creations you've made along the way!

That is a very beautiful box, Carl. I really like the shape, the natural cap, and the finial.
Thank you very much Bud! Have a great weekend.
Another great video. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks Tom!
Your ‘weirdness’ at the end is so funny. Have you thought of cobbling together a little TelePrompTer? There are some tutorials on RUclips on how to make your own.
lol Thank you Erin, but I think that would make it even weirder trying to read off it lol
You reminded me of Technology Connections and Steve Ramsey in swell foop❗
Have you embraced carbide?
Yes :)
Beautiful Piece. Thanks for sharing.. One day I hope to turn out work that I can be proud of. Full View and Like. Be Safe
Thank you Allen!! Stay safe!
Really like the finial mate. Looks great
Thank you!
That's an absolutely gorgeous box. Love the finial it sets the whole thing off beautifully. ❤️😀
Thanks so much 😊
Beautiful job 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you Tomas!
Love the box, love the finial. Nice work! Hope all is well Carl!
Thank you buddy! We're doing well how about you guys?
Carl Jacobson we are good thank you for asking! Thank you for keeping us all entertained during these wild times! Be safe!
Very nice, kind of a "Groot" box
Thank you, ya a little bit :)
That came out very very beautiful I love the way you did that I love that the handle on it for the lead the top part I thought that was very unique you got a very very cool imagination and I love the way you think thank you so much have a blessed day God bless
Thank you very much Richard!!
👍
Great video. Part of what I like about your channel is the natural presence - not rehearsed. If you don't want to forget things at the end - write a short list ahead of recording.
The list only works if Robin writes it ;) I forget every time lol Thank you so much Wes!!
@@CarlJacobson So it's her fault. I think you are in denial!
Hahaha no it's the truth!!
@@robinjacobson9616 Oh I get it, I have the same problem. When I present I use an alternate method. A list doesn't have to be written or even words. I place items out to help me remember. But if you can't remember to do something then what you do now is just fine.
Beautiful. Good job. 👍
Thank you Henrik!!
HI carl that was a super burl box. love the finial.
Thank you very much!!
@@CarlJacobson that's cool carl.
well, I gotta say, making that Ebony finial started out great. All symetrically turned but then toward the middle it looked pretty hacked up and I was thinking 'what is he doing?', but then I suddenly saw the finished piece and ... yep, nailed it! A beautiful box for the lady's jewelry ... But now here's a challenge, let's make a rough tough looking man-box for a guy's bling bling and watches. ;)
Thank you very much!! Maybe a future project!!
Reversing through the finial hole - GENIUS!! Gorgeous piece.
Thank you so much Aaron!! :)
Beautiful box, thanks for sharing .. 😀😀
Thank you so much 😊
Really enjoying the slow-mo openings! Great box, one of these days I'll be able to purchase a piece of your work. I wish I could smell not only your shop but all the amazing fires you must have. Sounds kinda creepy huh? Oh well. You, you do have a fire pit with all that right?!
Hahaha....Thank you very much Michael! Yes we have a firer place and a firer pit :)
ugh! that's sooooooo pretty!
Thank you so much!!
Hi Carl, I'm just getting into turning, do you know what the equivalent to the Cambridge dust mask is the the USA. Mike Waldt mentioned that you did a review on it but I can't find it on your web site` or maybe as time has passed you are aware of another similar alternative that you can recommend. Love your videos. Greetings from Bogota Colombia.
Thank you very much Jimmy! I use the RZ mask here's a link to there website rzmask.com/ Have a great weekend!
Looks great! Very cool
Thank you!
Beautiful box and I think the lid looks great all the way around. The "imperfection" is what makes it perfect!!
Thank you very much Michael!!
Incredible piece once again! Love the way the uneven top looks...Mother Nature’s perfection. Stay safe and well.
Thank you Brett, you stay safe as well.
Thank you Carl for such a wonderful video. I love that amazing piece of art! I’d give my soul to the devil to be able to have a shop like yours!!! I appreciate your time Sir.
Thank you very much Patrick!!!
Nice turning. I have been watching you for years, how come you don't talk during the turning and teach by explaining what you are doing. Thanks be safe.
Thank you Charles! With the dust collector, my mask and the sound of the lathe it would be an hour long video having to shut everything down and explain something. I would just rather turn the piece and then talk about it at the end.
Beautiful piece Carl
Thank you Dave!
My bloopers usually end in disaster. Cleaver finial there. You got some slick tools, luv the chuck!
Thank you Moe!! :)
Beautiful box! I love making boxes but here in northern Arizona we have very little wood to work with! Great job!
Thank you very much Don!!
Carl, I always enjoy your work. Nice job again. I'm heading over to Trevor's site to see what he has.
Thank you very much Larry! He has some beautiful wood!
Wonderful work
Thank you Mike!
Beautiful box. What happened to your commentary as you turned. The music is nice but miss the commentary.
Thank you Jeff!! With the dust collector, my mask and the sound of the lathe it would be an hour long video having to shut everything down and explain something. I would just rather turn the piece and then talk about it at the end.
