In this video I turned a Maple burl lidded box. The box is 4" x 5" and the finial is Walnut and Cocobolo.

Hi my name is Carl Jacobson,
I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together.

Carl I like the finial you chose. I agree with your comments about the other 2 options being too tall. I like the way that the thin cocobolo piece follows the curve of the box. Well done on another entertaining and inspirational video.

Really love the third iteration of the finial. It doesn't take away too much from the spherical box but it's also elegant and a simple way of lifting the lid off. So, to me, that is a result. Lovely shape and a gorgeous finish.

Great piece Carl! I really do love the boxes you turn... I wonder if turing a small roundish Pull out of the same burl but leave it raw at the top to match look of the spikes on the lid would look good? Thanks for sharing, V

Hello Carl. I'm not a big fan of finiels at all. For the most part, they are too gaudy. However, this is so low profile that it compliments the piece instead of taking away from it. The one you used is the best fit.

Yeah, I think it looks good as you have left it. The mushroom, cool as it is, was probably not quite low-key enough. Again, weirdly, I have just got some maple burl so I am, apparently, kind of predicting what wood you'll be using before you release the vid (or Instagram, lol) :D

Ca can you turn a bowl that has the rim arching to the outside of the bowl.kind of like flower petals look like.im not sure what the style of bowl is called
Yes I've seen bowls like that, I don't think they have a name.
I think one like that turned from spalted wood(pecan would be good) will look nice.what do you think? I keep trying to get the rim right but always wind up tearing a part of the rim off and have tomake it a regular rimmed bowl.sure would like to see a video of your expertise on this one mr.jacobson

Personally, I would have liked to see the cocobolo arch inverted for an Asian touch.
I really like that style too, but it didn't like right with this lid.
