    Awesome video! Just to clarify,
    A1- in smooth muscles of blood vessels for contraction therefor inhibition and in organs for activating peristalsis such as in ejaculation. In addition to that they increase contraction in sphincters for inhibition,
    A2- in Beta, Alpha cells of kidneys, platelets, and neurons.
    B1- in JG cells, Nodes, and Ghrelin secretion.
    B2- opposite of A1, relaxes in smooth muscles of blood vessels in activated organs for fight or flight. And in organs it relaxes such as to prevent peristalsis. They are also for activation of organs that need to secrete stuff in fight or flight such as salivary glands and liver.
    B3- is for adipose tissure and bladder only.
    I hope someone clarifies this. Thanks!

    Holy crap you are the light shining into the dark corners of my brain. You have solved the mystery of the receptors in the body for me. Why couldn’t a rest book simply tell me that beta 2 are inhibitory and alpha 1 excitatory. I cant believe how you made it logical for me. Thank you.

    OMG!!!!! Why did they not teach this in my paramedic class!!!! I have a MUCH better understanding of adrenergic receptors now. My new goal now is to change the way paramedic students are taught. If they are taught the why rather than just rouge memorization we will produce much better medics and save many more lives. It makes me SICK when I am on shift studying and I hear a seasoned medic tell me you will never need to know that.

    Thank you SO much for these videos. These are important concepts that I really want to UNDERSTAND not just memorize and you make that possible while also making it interesting, engaging, and fun. As a paramedic studying for critical care, I have found several of these videos to be the PERFECT level of depth. I suddenly understand shock in my patients in a way I didn't before and this has set the stage for me to much more easily understand how various vasopressors work (via another one of your videos of course!). So thank you for producing these, thank you for providing such high quality education for free, and I'm off to check out your memberships because I'd love to support the work you do.

    First of all thank you for your wonderful lectures.
    I think there is a small mistake in this lecture.
    N.E has higher affinity to alpha receptors than EPI.

      I just checked the book, it says, NA is equipotent to Adr, on alpha receptors, but it is shown to be less potent as in the test systems as it is reuptaken faster.

      Zviizaks, you are right.
      N. E. stimulates only the Alpha receptors, 100% Alpha. It has no Beta stimulation at all.
      Epinephrine has 50% Alpha and 50% Beta stimulation. So it can stimulate both Alpha and Beta receptors.
      Epinephrine and N. E. are both naturally occurring catecholamines. But there is a synthetic catecholamine called Isoprenaline, which is 100% Beta receptor stimulant.
      To sum up
      N. E. - 100% Alpha
      Epinephrine - 50% Alpha + 50% Beta
      Isoprenaline - 100% Beta

    Beta 2 receptors for the heart/ sympathetic system? My professor said Beta 1 receptors for the heart. Beta 1 for the heart and beta 2 for the lungs.

    Hi there, I really enjoy your videos. I wanted to mention that activation of Gi protein-coupled receptors leads to activation of phosphodiesterase (PDE), which breaks down cAMP to AMP. You mention inhibition of adenylate cyclase. I wanted clarification over that.

    I have a question. If sympathetic system inhibits micturition and defecation then why do some people go to pee or defecate in stressful situations

      These organs have parasympathetic control and sympathetic control by direct innervation as well. The direct innervation will produce a response faster than the hormonal regulation. So the effect of the nerves will happen first, the hormones second. For example the arterioles controlling the capillary beds are innervated. So are these sphincters. There is no benefit to keeping urine inside in a crisis. Same for fecal matter. They consume energy to keep warm. So you expel them under neuroligical control (instant) and then shut the door under hormonal control (gradual)shortly after.
      This even explains why epinephrine and norepinephrine act on alpha 2 receptors to inhibit the preganglionic nerves. The hormonal system is taking over from the nervous system.
      In addition the adrenal glands have much larger amounts of stored norephinephrine compared to those nerves. They would run out of neurotransmitters if their output wasnt suppressed through the activity of alpha 2 receptors. By being surpressed this allows the takeover by the adrenal gland which is better equipped to mass produce these hormones for a prolonged fight/flight.
      Its important to remember that not only is the sympathetic nervous system helping you win the fight or escape the danger. It is preparing your body to survive the aftermath. Massive blood loss? The kidneys preemptively started preserving water and salt and the hormone that will continue this trend (renin) is s being activated. Renin is not quick enough to help during the crisis but will help after and the earlier it is activated the better. Erector pilli?? Keep you warm so you don't die of hypothermia from blood loss. Central blood shunting? Lose less blood from a wound. Platelet activation by alpha 2? Lose less blood. Ghrelin??? After the battle you need to eat.
      Its fight and flight AND preparation to survive trauma.m

    b1 acts only on heart and JGC of kidney.
