This is something i find irritating about board game marketing and social media whores, this game was all over social media, people were going mad for it, the must have game at that particular time, i think everyone but me bought a copy at Expo last year, then all goes quite once its sold out coz everyone realises its shit. Keep up spreading your honest opinions please, you are still my sense checker before most purchases.

I swear that games are made with deliberate Day 1 hype in mind nowadays. Snazzy miniatures, a zany new IP, 5 different mechanisms crammed into a single game. Well, Kickstarter darlings anyway.

I liked the game. It brings a unique deckbuilding aspect with the boxes and I was never a fan of post apocalyptic games anyway so I enjoy.

I really enjoyed playing this but to each their own. Entertaining review none the less!

Your "What we like" and "What we don't like" sections are unique in the review field. No matter how well liked, you will reveal what you consider are failings - and for disliked games, you will highlight the good elements. This channel has never been BS.

Another great review, the quality just keeps getting better. I actually picked this up whenever it came to retail after playing at UKGE last year. It fills a gap for me and I do enjoy playing it but equally totally agree with your review of it. I guess I'm putting up with the bollocks on this one :D

I would defenatly not play this game in multi-player anymore, coz there are better "race to xx pts" on the market.
But, I quite like the game in solo.
The solo mode is easy to manage, smooth and the rule saying you're stealing the resources you gain from the IA, is making it much more interesting, and a light and relaxing ressources management puzzle.
Not the best and not the worst.
But a pleasing one in solo for me.

This was exactly my impression of the game too. A few intriguing ideas, but a very pasted on theme and not very much variety after a couple of games. Glad it was someone else who bought it and not me. They've since sold it on as well.

I think it's just OK. Certainly not great, but it can at least accommodate a decent number of players without extending the playtime, and there's a precious few of those on market. I'd only tenuously recommend it to people who are desperate for more quick, high player count simultaneous play games and have exhausted all the obvious ones.
My biggest issue is that by the written rules the game is over too fast to build an interesting deck, and it just becomes a "get as many mandrills as possible" game because points are king. Not that I have any desire to make the game longer, but to my mind 3/4 apes don't particularly justify their own existence much of the time.
I don't agree with the card buying turn order issue at all though. The cards are supposed to be taken from face down piles, so nobody should be able to see exactly what they're buying ahead of time. Everyone can be subject to the same shitty luck regardless of who purchases first, last or anywhere in between.
And yeah, the theme is wank. Shame really, because the art is pretty great.
    Fun review, as always! 👍

Slightly off topic here but 1) how come you’re still using the stairway clip? In Still Worth It? Temple of Chac i thot you said you’d moved? Or was that just cobblers? 2) i am assuming you have a script - judging from your sideway glances but how much of it is it then ad-libbed? 3) In some of the Still Worth It? Vids namely Chac, the videowork is wonderful. Don’t recall that before. Have you changed styles or moved away from the talking head or has this always been the case and i’m just a wanker for even bringing this up. BTW just signed up for you Patreon and realised your last vid there was October 23!

I do a special intro when I have the time…which isn’t often. Work and all that stuff.
I don’t have a script but I have bullet points on a post it note so everything is made up on the spot more or less…amazing innt
I add as much b-roll as I need to make the point but there’s some fluff in there as well.
Thanks for your support on Patreon. Would you like me to add links there everytime I upload? Supporters rarely click the links that I’ve added as they’re available on RUclips.

@@BoardGameBollocks thanks for the info. Love your B-roll footage by the way. Guess there isn’t a need for the links up on Patreon as i can get my kicks just by subscribing to the channel. So don’t bother

I thought it was an enjoyable enough game, I pissed to a victory on my first go too.... but, the theme is very fucking tenuous. It could have been any kind of theme at all, or none at all, and the game wouldn't be any different.

  • @palacsintaz

The draw order complaint is silly both here and in RFTG. For all you know little gnomes have swapped the top cards while you weren't looking so you actually got the one you were meant to get.
The theme is clearly Planet of the Apes, a shameless cash-in on that 50 year old epic. It's a deckbuilder and it's about as thematic as other deckbuilders. At least this one has good art and components.
I agree that it's no Dominion but I find the spatial puzzle thing unique and fun. That along with the fast gameplay and the nice production make this a game that I am always happy to see on the table.

Seems like publishers these days think they can scrap any old garbage together, have Vincent Dutrait do the art, and call it a day.

I played a 4 Player game at a convention, intrigued by the beautiful artwork and appealing theme (I love the PotA premise)
Well, we realized pretty soon, that the game is quite random, uninteresting and repetitive.
It felt like much potential was wasted here and the designers tried to keep it as simple as possible. For example, the card draws: You always draw a random card, the only thing you can influence is, which pile you draw from.
It feels unsatisfyingly casual, we wished the game had more meat.
Im glad I didnt buy it, because i was tempted to do so, after reading the description on the box.
The play simultaneously also made the game feel kinda messy.... It was a pain in the ass to wait for all players to go to the next phase. As soon as we realized the dullness of the game, everyone wanted to rush it, which made it even more of a mess.
    Hard pass on this one.
