Thank you so much. This video was very helpful. I always appreciate someone that can take something complicated and translate it into simple terms that everyone can understand.
would be great if Ed did a side-by-side comparison of Caldigit TS3 Plus vs Plugable TBT 3 UDZ - these seem to be the 2 top docks - cannot find anywhere in RUclips a face-off between these 2 terrific docks
I have the Caldigit TS3 and its a great dock but only lasted 2 years and has stopped working. I am now looking for a different dock manufacturer and hope to have better luck.
I have a Thunderbolt USB port in my laptop. So for best results I should buy a Thonderbolt brand docking station. I don't need a docking station with Thunderbolt ports.
Thank you for the info, but one thing I'm finding with everyone who does these documentaries is that they are not talking about docking stations for those of us who have older model laptops. Mine works great. it doesn't have a USB C or USB 3.0. It has one DVI and One USB A port. What about us who want to add a doc for multiple monitors for working at home, I was working at the office years ago with multiple monitors what happened to that tech where is it where can it be found and how do you connect it all without having to buy a new laptop with USB C or Thunderbolt.
Get a Sabrent Thunderbolt doc. Do not get a Thunderbolt Dell or HP doc. They have way to many bugs with their drivers. It's a total nightmare. Yea, you may have a more wires, but just deal with it as you do not have all of the start-up issues. The Sabrent will power two monitors, Has an internet connection and 3.0 USB port and a card reader. So you will need to use the power supply supplied with you laptop.
Awesome video! My question: Do the watts of my MSI GF72VR - 7RF laptop power adapter (180W charger) or battery (43Wh) determine how many watts I need from a dock? My friend's hybrid SD5600T Kensington dock (via its 180W charger/100W power delivery ) doesn't activate PD/DP on my laptop. He suspects my MSI USB C 3.1 (Gen 1) port isn't PD/DP enabled.
Please Help Me I'm Confused Which One Do I Need For My Laptop, Its A HP Pavilion 17-g121wm? I Noticed It Does Have A USB-C-Port On It Tho. (Correction)) It's not a USB-C Port But It Looks Like One,..I'm Assuming That's where the Compatible Docking station would Connect. Please Help.
Good info.... thanks. Very useful... and Pretty Lady. Would be better to record in a room without so much echo and slapback... just a suggestion. You're overall presentation is so good and you are attractive and the echo in your room was distracting and took away from the overall polish of this nice presentation. Also it would take some of the edge off your voice and make it more listenable. Again, just a thought. I'm in the Voice business and all these are details that will pick up your game.... Best, Joe
FFS. You are confusing Docking stations with Port Replicators. Every single device you described as a docking port was actually a port replicator. Stop pretending you know the difference.

Would have loved some info about the different USB icons. Which ones mean power delivery, which ones mean T-bolt, etc.
Great video. I wish I had seen it before I spent money and wasted time troubleshooting the wrong kind of docking station for my laptop!
I would've loved to hear Ed's top 5 recommendations.
Excellent, excellent, excellent intro/tutorial made by Ed. Thumb up! Thanks.

My HP dock could not power two 4 K monitors. It wigged out.

do docking stations plug in the wall?
For a thunderbolt port for a macbook, would you recommend an OWC or a CalDigit?
very helpful, thanks
Hahaha, of all things.. this topic does not require a "podcast" XD
I have a Dell laptop. What is a good docking station to add 4 monitors
Inspiration 15
Do you need to download any software/drivers with the docking station?
No docking stations that I know of require any software to operate.
Productivity includes not having to spend 10 minutes getting it to start up. Stay away from powered Docs that have drivers.
huh ? what?? i wasn't paying attention.
How about ones not made in China?
