  • Auto insurance companies claim they can save you money, but in "The Truth About Car Insurance," Consumer Reports says otherwise. The magazine conducted research for two years in which they analyzed more than two billion car insurance price qutoes from more than 700 companies. Margot Gilman of Consumer Reports joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss the findings.

    The main problem is you can go decades without filing a claim, yet your auto insurance company will continue to charge you a "High Risk" rate.

    Wouldn't it be nice if you or I came up with some idea(car insurance) that the government forced everyone to purchase so they could travel the roads every day to do necessary things like go to work or to the grocery store! I think insurance should be like taxes, you pay all year and if you dont use it you get a portion of it back like 80%.. I've always said that little piece of paper in your globe box is the most expensive piece of paper you will ever own!! I hate insurance companies it's a total RIP off!

    I strongly agree, car insurance look into credit scores to know how much they can charge you regardless of your driving record. It seems like a type of Bribery charges. Driving record should be the primary definition of your rate or premium. Contact the Department of Insurance in Washington and let them know that car insurance "Bribery" is immoral and unethical.

    Everything is a rating factor credit, adress , age , driving history claim history, vehicle type, even when you shop for new insurance non at fault will impact your rates. How many miles you drive. Look for companies that go back 3 years not five. Even road side assistance claims impact your rates. Lapse in coverage is a big one rating factor

    • @conchobar
      @conchobar 4 года назад

      The problem is how those factors are weighed. Right now, auto insurers are weighing credit score over driving record and in many instances even filing a single claim. So having a higher credit score can overcome filing a claim vs someone who never files a claim, has a clean driving record, but has a low credit score.

    INSURANCE PREMIUMS: I haven’t had a wreck in over 40 years. I haven’t had a ticket in over 30 years. i drive to town from the country about 2 or 3 times a week. I am retired and on a fixed income. I don’t go out and party or drink or smoke. YET… My ‘’’liability’’’ insurance ONLY is as high as my brother’s insurance. His insurance is only $100 higher than mine: YET, he has complete coverage. COMPLETE COVERAGE. From bumper to bumper. He has a 2017 Chevy Silverado 4 door cab. I have a 2005 Chevrolet 1500 which is valued at only 1500. IT'S ALL A CROOKED SCHEME. This all comes after lobbyist (crooks) pay lawmakers to make it a law where you have to have car insurance. The USA has fallen and become habitations for demons.

    • @billwashinski4961
      @billwashinski4961 6 лет назад +2

      Get this -- companies really don't care how much you drive. People lie about that anyway. Drinking or smoking is for HEALTH insurance, not auto insurance. For the record, there is no such thing as "complete coverage" -- how much would your insurance pay if you hit and injured my daughter in a car accident? If she paralyzed, do you think I wouldn't see to it you were sued? different states have different guidelines. Michigan rates are astronomical, but if you are injured in an accident the potential for medical bills is unlimited. In Florida there is more Insurance Fraud than anywhere in the nation due to PIP laws and suing your own insurance company. If you REALLY want a lower rate, there is a legit formula to obtaining it.

    Bill Washinski, are you the patron saint of insurance companies?
    You seem very keen to protect them.
    Insurance companies prey on people. They use ads to panic folk into insuring for just about everything.
    When it comes to claims they do all they can to get out of paying.
    When they agree to pay out they offer pathetic amounts and reduce the payout by using ‘excesses’.
    Regarding cars, they use a pricing ‘guide’ and pay the bottom book price where as in reality there is little chance of replacing the car for the amount offered.
    I could write several pages pointing out how they scam us all but I’ll just tell you one story.
    The 9/11 incident in New York proved that insurance companies are taking us all for a ride.
    I was sub contracting for a roofing company at the time. After 9/11 the companies liability cover doubled. They tried to get a more competitive quote. All the insurance companies had got together and agreed not to take on new clients effectively forcing their clients to pay double. They did this until they recouped their losses.
    This was blatant market fixing. Insurance companies can never lose if this is allowed. They say that each client is ‘risk’ assessed.
    In reality there is no risk as all they do is pass the cost of any ‘loss’ to other people.
    It’s a ‘legal’ immoral scam!!

    So misunderstood. Insurance companies not unlike other businesses use statistics and have proven time and time again are actuary sound in determining the risk of a customer. The insurance score is proprietary to each insurance company and the data they collect can vary from company to company - but credit score (or component of) is most commonly used as a predictor as to who is most likely to file a claim. Common sense will tell you living paycheck to paycheck you cannot afford a $1000-$5000 out of pocket expense, but others can.

Not some corporate schmucks making billions a year.. Who ever causes more than 2 accidents a year is probably incapable of driving and should not be driving. It would remove dumb drivers off the road also. Think about the future. Is the United States only going to think for the capital interests or its People for once? #STANDUP

    Credit score is NOT a fair prediction of driving safety, but it can indicate likelihood of your filing a claim. Rich guys often pay out of pocket to repair their property (despite having insurance). This keeps their premiums low and their insurance record more or less in tact (your claims history is shared amongst other insurance companies, like your checking account behavior may be shared between banks (ChexSystems).
    It’s a way of predicting who may over time cost more to insure, but it’s entirely unfair, from my point of view (former licensed P&C claims agent) as it essentially punishes consumers for using their insurance. What insurance companies really want is a no-risk, profit rich business environment. And that often leaves consumers in weeds. Never mind the discrimination it represents when charging much higher premiums for poor credit despite a perfect driving record. Let me tell you, the lower income insureds are much more careful in their driving than the wealthy, who don’t fear DUI, accidents, speeding, etc. because they’re self-insured or protected as high value by insurance companies.
    I wrote my congressional representative a couple of years ago about this, but essentially got nowhere (GOP/Business-first state).

Each state has its own laws regarding how insurance companies are allowed to rate their policies, and the number of factors that insurance companies look at to determine each individual rate are vast.
