Thxs KFLO! very nice instructional video on the Tacoma .. You saved me $ maintenance cost on this 2011 Tacoma we replaced the belt and idler which solve the whining problem… Could not have done it without you, Thxs again!
Outstanding! Best DIY I’ve ever seen , Quality of the video, Great angles on the close-ups, step by step narration ; Giving your viewers, part number of washer. Is another touch
Thanks KFlo for the tips. I checked my belt and it still looks new after 120,000 miles. Pulleys seem fine as well. I carry a spare belt with me just in case.
Thanks again brother. I followed this process exactly and got ‘er done in about 20 min taking my time and really double checking everything.. thank you again..
Thanks man! I just ordered the entire gates kit and plan to do everything as I’m overly cautious and figure I’ll do it while I’m in there. Thanks for a great vid.
Thank you for the video. Couldn’t of done it without it. I finally got around to changing the belt and had your video on my phone to see if I did it right. Very helpful. My belt still looked good after 213100 miles but I changed it anyway.
K- my idler on the 2016 2.7 had a spacer on the old one ,stuck on the inside , it was nedded to aid in the spin. The 2 wd is easier to work on less in the way, the fan shroud comes out of the way and done from up top. Those bolts on the skid plate become part of the car if there not service with anti sieze. I watch your vids as homework to prepare for the job, im glad to have these videos there like gold . Im also subscibed . Thank you .
Your video helped me quite a bit. Changing the belt was far simpler than I expected. My 2016 has two tensioner pulleys that also need replaced but over all not difficult. Thank you
Fantastic camera work. Great explanations too. I wish I'd have known about the drill bit trick to hold the tensioner when I replaced my belt. GO FLEET! I own a SD model.
It did... that was an Easy fix! Literally 30 minutes of “work”.... My bottom pulley was shot, barely spun. Top 2 pulleys spun but sounded like gravel.... tensioner pulley was okay- but I replaced it too....
I wish I had your helpful tricks and informative suggestions for my gen 2 tacoma in my back pocket....! It it out of the park once again. Very helpful and informative I must say! I Thankyou.. and look forward to the next time! David
Fantastic video! I did this once before and took radiator out and all that jazz. This looks way easier. Now I just have to figure out which one is making a racket. Thank you! New subscriber!
Thanx for making this vid for us do it yourselfers. Didn't know about the stop hole for the tensioner or the fact that the pulley bolt is reverse thread. Once again great job.
Excellent video, I looked a few videos before I found yours but your explanations and step by step were the best. I did not see that tip on the drill bit on any other videos, that saved me a ton of time and frustration. Also, your camera work is awesome, I do not know how you got that shot of putting the drill bit in, you must have thee arms.
great video! I had to do this on my 3rd gen taco with only 29,000/30,000 miles. I had to replace the belt and the belt tensioner as both were not performing as they should have
@@KFloTacoma My 2005 Tacoma has never had the belt replaced, and at least one of those pulleys sounds terrible. Do you recommend I replace them all at once?
Great write-up as always! I’m using the Gates 36173 for the top/passenger pulley instead of the OEM. It comes with a small insert but no washer. Would you recommend adding a washer like you did for the others?
Pretty sure you can access the tensioner bolt from the top using a long breaker bar. No need to remove skid plate. Replacing pulleys is another matter.
Just a PSA. For those looking for a tensioner pulley, and not the full assembly an "upper" idle bearing is the same as the tensioner pulley. Toyota nor oriellys etc will be able to get a "tensioner pully" Just replaced mine 20 min ago. Cheers
I just want to double check. I noticed my tensioner pulley spinning freely and making noises. Just replace the upper idler bearing next to the alternator because I thought it was the one causing the noise. Turns out the noise was still there. If the upper idle bearing is the same one for the tensioner puller then I’m just gonna swap out the bad tensioner pulley with the upper idler pulley. Any issues so far since the change?
@@strelokblackburn4651 Thanks a lot. Thought I would have to change the whole thing. Just did the water pump awhile ago and would hate to go back in there for the whole assembly. Just swap it with the upper one I bought for the upper and the noise is gone.
@@jimyang556 yer welcome bud. Yea I hear ya I didn't want to replace my whole tensioner assembly for just a bad pully bearing. And no ome has a part number for just the bearing even tho it's just called an upper bearing
Excellent video! Thank you so much for your clear and concise explanations. Have you had to remove the idler pulley on the bottom? The one next to the crankshaft? It seems you'd have to remove the oil cooler too access it but it appears there's a metal gasket that might need replacing and I can't seem to find any info on it.
Good instruction video 👍 There is a complete kit sold by the Continental brand that includes serpentine belt, tensioner pulley and 2 idler pulley OE quality which is recommend for the best function and service life for about 180.00 from Rockauto. I think this is my best choice for my 2005 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner V6. No?
They are not the same size. If you look at the diagram, it refers to No 1. and No 2. idlers (two pulleys are the same size, the third is a different size)
Are you sure the tensioner pulley is 39 ft/lbs? I’m seeing 27 & 29 ft/lbs elsewhere. I was thinking the larger torque spec may be for the whole tensioner considering Toyota doesn’t sell just the tensioner pulley.
Hey K-flo, I know the 3rd gen is not the same diagram. My question is if there's a slot that you can insert a drill bit just to make it loose on the 3rd gen? Thanks and be safe..
I'm not too familiar with the 3rd gen. At worst case scenario, I would remove tension by hand and hold it just to get one side of the belt off a pulley. Then you should be able to release the tension completely

unfortunately not, the belt diagram is different for the 3rd gen motors

The 3rd Gens and ? others may have a left thread on the bolt holding the tensioner pulley. Otherwise unloading the tensioner would loosen that bolt.

It be great if you put engine info in description
