  • My Dream Smallholding: Planting up the bank.
    Hey! Welcome back to another episode everyone. If you're a returning viewer, thank you so much for the support! If you're new, welcome and good luck haha.
    In this episode I'm planting up one side of the stream bank, one for the birds and two, to help stregnthen the bank side. I have also planted 10 laurels.To note, Laurels are none native and I'm not planting any more, anywhere onsite. They were picked due to the bright evergreen leaf and instant screening, purposefully for that fence edge, to help give a visual for the road bend. They are however extremely good at catching vehicle soot. Win.
    I appreciate all of you, thank you so much for tuning in. Please give my accounts a look and follow, if you like them. every little helps.

      Hello Dean, thank you for your time, much appreciated. The only as stated in my description, are the 10 laurels, none native but serve a purpose and are well painted on that small strip. France has a place in my heart, diolch / Thank you.

    I have planted many beech, and hornbeam, (which I prefer), hedges. Never considered doing so next to a stream, as the advice has been to pick a well drained site, hopefully yours will be okay. I would consider fast growing willow next to a stream, which after a while you could coppice for either fire wood or sticks for general use. Laurel is great fast growing hedge. Being mean I would have planted mine a bit further apart to encourage lateral growth. But they are great at absorbing sound, and catching pollution and a wind break.

    • @jeanettefrancis6473
      @jeanettefrancis6473 6 месяцев назад +2

      I agree, and wondered the same. I would think the roots will grow into the stream and the leaves will fall and block it. They also seem very close together and not much room to grow. I have seen many people plant hedges very close together and too close to a fence, which has resulted in very leggy hedges due to restricted light and no room to grow, and also damage trying to grow through the fence. I would plant at least a metre away and a metre apart. It will soon join up. But I love what you are planning on achieving on your land. Great idea.

      Hey Andrew, thank you for watching and commenting. Hornbeam is my preferred too but hornbeam doesn't hold onto its leaves through winter. I've planted a few hundred of hornbeam in the field which is part of a new plant mixed hedge. So I managed alot of the trees and hedges at my sisters, there's a mixed purple and green beech hedge. This is by a main, large river. I've also copied its planting spacing as it's 15year old + established. The laurels, are purely there for the visual on the road bend and soot capture. They'll need to be contained to this spot only. So a lot of strict management on it. Thanks a million for your time Andrew 🙏🍃

    • @offthegridwales
      @offthegridwales  6 месяцев назад

      Cheers for your time Jeanette 😁🙏. The purpose of river side planting is for roots to seak the banks edge. This creates a natural barrier against erosion. I have willow planting on the opposite side, you'll see in future videos 🥰 (I love the willow fedge so much). Beech do not shed leaves like others, so don't worry about my stream, no blockages here 😊

    Only thing I can see and I might be teaching you to suck eggs is being that close yes they will crowd each other out somewhat so some more vigourous ones may take over while others languish. Also you are likely to get a significant amount of root encroaching into the water way which may clog it up, nothing that maintenance won't solve, just another job to be aware of. Roots will tend to extend towards water like tap roots go down, the shallow roots will reach out.

    • @offthegridwales
      @offthegridwales  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you for watching and commenting! No not at all I love the comment. So I've put them that close, purposely for bank build up, to prevent further erosion (I also have a willow fedge now on the other side). So far father last years they've all grown out pretty well. I do appreciate you thinking the exact same thing as I, they are a tad close. But a super dense patch is what I'm after (hopefully it'll happen) 🥹🍃

    Beech only retain their leaves in their juvenile form, which they will remain in if clipped into a hedge. Hornbeam also retain their leaves if clipped.
    As long as it’s dry enough on that side of the stream and you manage to beech as a hedge, I think your planting will do well (closer is good for a hedge) and will form a lovely stream side feature.

    • @offthegridwales
      @offthegridwales  5 месяцев назад

      I honestly didn't know hornbeam did too then I realised. I'm only used to hornbeam in hedgerows on lanes. So they're topped in winter 🤦‍♂️ and thus no leaf left. Thanks for your time and comment Andrew 👌🙏

    One tip is don't plant beech or anything else the othe side of the stream because it is now running over clean gravel and you don't want to have loads of leaf litter in it also planting both sides will take out too much of the natural light from the water which is important for all the invertebrates that live in the stream bed.

    • @offthegridwales
      @offthegridwales  5 месяцев назад

      The stream was pretty much invisible and hidden and blocked when I purchased it. Two winters now, never gets leaf litter filling it 🙏. The micro life is thriving in it 😁🥹🕷🦞🐌🐸

    • @offthegridwales
      @offthegridwales  6 месяцев назад

      Thank you! Good question, I've spent a lot of my life outdoors, around different habitats and with people with expertise. The field areas are 100% native mixed species (as they should) to create new hedge rows, these will be layed in 6 years. The wet areas are planted with 3 species of willow, except for this beech row, which was chosen for its screening ability through the seasons and the fact it doesn't shed leafs until the new ones are out. Laurels are for bit of particle pollution capture from the road and a visual for the bend.
