I know Andy isn't going all out like it's the US Open or anything, but it's still F-ing ridiculous that Mac has the reflexes to get those serves back in at his age. What a legend. God Damn.
No, he was taking many, many mph of heat off the surve just so he'd get it in. McEnroe couldn't have gotten Roddick's surve in when he was playing primetime.
What makes you say he wouldnt have gotten it in in his prime? I mean, I agree that here the guy is laying off, but Mac has played the likes of Becker and Ivanisevic. He even beat Ivanisevic a couple of times even though they played like 8 years after Mac's prime (since Mac declined heavily after 83). If he could return Ivanisevic's service he could return Roddick's.
@@alanfrost75 yes. e's reading his serve well and is capable of taking a set off Roddick. Some people can still really play at 60. Anyone who plays should know someone that old who can still really play, unless they're really isolated.
If this was in 2016, Mac was 57 (two years older than Bobby Riggs when he "lost" to BJK) and Roddick was 34. Weird groundstrokes and all, Mac is still a fantastic player.
It is always great to Watch Formal CHAMPIONS playing.........especially that ANDY was and still is my Hero in the Tennis World!!!!!! God Bless him and his Family!!!!!!! I wish him Good Health and a Fruitful Life.........
unlikely. Mac's game was so suited to wooden raquets. If they played with wood then possibly. With new raquets? No way that he destroys him. Mac is not a good serve returner and his groundstrokes are below pair in todays game. He would have a hard time breaking Roddick's serve.
CST You probably ignore that Mac at the end of his career (1990) won the Basilea ATP returning rocket serves from Ivanisevic. Your homeworks: ruclips.net/video/Yafab8gfxsU/видео.html
If Mac was suited only to wood racquets, why did he have the best ATP year ever in '84, using a modern racquet? By then, everyone on tour had one. Mac was an excellent return of server. You don't go 84-3 like he did in '84, by holding serve and winning tiebreaks. His return was very consistent. He moved in, took the ball early to cut down the angles, and blocked it back with varying degrees of pace, and to various parts of the court.
Mac took great joy in dismantling huge servers like Roscoe Tanner, Steve Denton, Chip Hooper, Kevin Curren. Roddick would have been similar fodder for him.
Roscoe Tanner served a (questionable) 153 in 1978, but had other serves measured in the low 140's; Steve Denton had a 138, Boris Becker a 141. And this was before they slowed down grass and hard courts. It's more about placement, anyway. Pete Sampras won 7 Wimbledons and he rarely served harder than the mid-120's.
When Roscoe Tanner was 40, he hit the fastest serve that year of anyone...and he was playing on the senior tour! This was at the heyday of Goran, Boris, Stich, and other fast servers. John would have given Andy a run for his money....and Andy might have had a tougher time breaking John than the opposite. John was a LOT quicker than andy...one of the quickest people around the court ever....no one retreated for an overhead better than Johnny Mac.
His groundstrokes are unorthodox by today's standards, but they are, and always were, quite effective. In this match, he has already played and won two tough sets against top senior competition, and his legs are gone.
@@albertcamus5970 Yes they were hitting topspin, but it was not a lot. Borg and a few others were the exception. There are always exceptions, but yes McEnroe grew up in an era where it was much harder to produce copious amounts of topspin because rackets and string had not developed enough to make that easier. Maybe not everyone swung like McEnroe yes, but flat, hard hitting was very common. Such as heavy, high topspin swings are common today because the technology allows it. With exceptions like Delpo, and Tomic who hit flat and hard.
@@rohanvarma2836 it’s not messy although we can argue on the look, it’s limited due to his continental forehand grip and his loose strings which forces to generate power using the pace of the ball rather than full racket head speed.
He’s the most unusual player of all time yet one of the most talented in history. Playing with a continental forehand grip for every shot and loose strings makes you narrow your swing shape which makes striking the ball easier and consequently reduces the physical readiness needed for the change of grip and bigger swing
MrPernell27 You are in denial. Just look at what you see in this match. Mcenroe has always pushed and thrown junk balls at his opponents. That shit is not going to work against a power player like Roddick.
John Smith look at this match. You mean an exhibition aga I natural a guy about 25 years younger? Are you seriously trying to compare McEnroe at almost 60 to McEnroe in his prime? Anyone who knows even a little bit about Tennis would tell you McEnroe at his best would have destroyed Roddick. Just because you can hit it harder doesn't make you a better player

Roddick is also only slicing his backhand just to give the fans a longer rally or two.
He is also not really going for the passing shots

Only a tennis genius can play this way at that age against such an opponent
Thank you! Great video.
People who don't appreciate mcenroe are simply crazy, or maybe stupid
Seriously! If these 2 played in their prime, McEnroe would destroy roddick

Very rude comment Pietro ........... All formal CHAMPIONS are still appreciated and we do miss him....... va bene ????????

I couldn’t root for him when he was on the ATP Tour because he was such a bad sport. But I sure love him now. What a tennis genius.
McEnroe is easily the best player of all time with absolutely no groundstrokes.
His groundstrokes are unorthodox by today's standards, but they are, and always were, quite effective. In this match, he has already played and won two tough sets against top senior competition, and his legs are gone.
someone close to 60 facing someone who retired way too early and could have still been playing on the main tour. Of course there's no contest.
Ríos no lo dejó ni respirar a Mac.
Mcenroe is the man! At his age? Wtf!@!
que bien juancito
mcenroe has 7 and roddick has 1
How fast was roddick serving here?
yes
110?
It's funny, I find that McEnroe has one of the smoothest and elegant serving motions ... and maybe the ugliest forehand I've ever seen.
I agree his service is so nice and old fashioned but his forehand is just messy to be honest
Well he came from an era where that was the typical forehand. It’s actually quite good.

Yeah, it's not much of a beauty, but I'd still say Edberg's fh is uglier - evem with the more modern technique.

Take away Andy's serve weapon and the match woould get ugly
A Tennis Player vs a Baseball Player.
Why does Mac look like he plays with a cane and not a racket? He keeps the racket on the ground!

The young Mac was more mobile. This old Mac is probably about half his young self. This is an easy match for Roddick.
So what are you saying?Mac wasn’t;t as mobile at 57 as he was at 27? Great observation genius
