John had the best eye in Tennis. When he saw a Ball out, it was out. Thats why he had so many troubles with officials. He wouldnt back down when he knew he was right. Lendl serve was clearly out you see it even without stopping the Tape...
Except your eye can deceive you as modern technology shows so just cos he thought it was out doesn't mean it was. If they'd had that tech back then he wouldn't have been able to argue so much.
These entertaining little "tournaments" outside of the regular Pro circuit were a beauty to watch in the 1980s. Things like these, where players aren't just competing for a trophy or fame, would sure help the sport of tennis these days.
Martina Navratilova said that unlike today, low level tournaments weren't considered tune up for the slams. They played every level tournament to win it. Jimmy Connors holds the record for most tournament won, and many of them included ATP 250 tournaments and some exhibitions too. Lendl is 2nd behind him. This is why they both held on to the #1 ranking for such a long time.
That's very true. I saw a match the other day when he was in a match with Connors, in China i think it was. And the lines-lady called a shot he hit out, that was clearly in. He went over and pointed it then started to argue, but he received a chorus of boos and hisses, then he just moved on. But i replayed the shot over and over, and it was so clearly in that it was a shame to see him get robbed like that. But yes usually after he argues that way, he psyches himself up, and places his opponent in a mental fog, then goes on to win. And i for one used to love it when he blew up on them. I would sit there and laugh the whole time.
He was personally responsible for changing the way Wimbledon’s officials were chosen. Before he arrived, the linesmen were chosen by nepotism ie who you knew. They were invariably old duffers who spent the morning of important matches drinking in the bar. Check the videos of the matches in the 70s. Old men almost asleep in many cases. Even now I remember McEnroe hitting a perfect serve absolutely down the midline and a huge puff of chalk flew into the air. “Fault ” came the cry from the line judge. He looked about 90 years of age wearing thick lens spectacles! Now check the videos of Wimbledon in the mid 80s and see the difference!
No,this is from the stakesmatch-tournament in west palm Beach, Florida. It took place in november 1987. There are other videos from the tournament on youtube, go check it out.
It didn't matter then and it doesn't matter now if John lost to Lendl, Conners, Bjorg or anyone else. The guy was always more talented then all of them put together and he was surely more fun to watch. Long live the legend of John McEnroe!
@@Dreamwarrior64 Arnold Swarznegger has been in bigger grossing movies than Robert Deniro. Does that make Arnold more talented than Robert ? 😂We are talking about Tennis, not singing nor being asked to have a cameo in a movie.
McEnroe was a repugnant bully whose truly terrible behavior was tolerated for far too long. The American sport media always made excuses for him (Connors as well) because American 'champions' made for good ratings and revenue. That said, by this point in their careers McEnroe was overmatched against Lendl. Cheers!
That fault call is just appalling umpiring. Every time today, on a false or altered call like that, the umpires always play the point over. Just appalling decision making from the umpires.
3:03 that ball was clearly out. John was right. As a matter of fact John was right at least 95% of the time. The umpire Jay Snyder was incompetent thru out the years and had it in for Mcenroe.
McEnroe would explode when his opponent was beating him and close to winning. Dare l say hoping to put his opponent off his game,,The talent of the man is undeniable but many underhanded tactics. A spoiled brat who was used to always getting his own way and spat the dummy out when he didn't.

He was paid to have outbursts ? He has been like that since he was 18 years old. Are you saying he was paid for all those years to have outbursts on calls he was right most of the time ?
Unfortunately, these outbursts, and in some cases somewhat justified, from such a naturally gifted player whom I admire, will always be a stain on his legacy.
your probably right, people eat it up. sad that it takes childish, unsportsmen like conduct to entertain people. it's even sadder when the very gifted resort to this behavior. i prefer the quiet ones, who let their racket do the talking.
Best era of Tennis, both legends of the game.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Lendl was a T800 sent back from the future😂
I think Lendl loved it when McEnroe went off on one. It was a fantastic rivalry, both were gladiators, gosh I miss those days.
The difference then and now is that winning points had to be set up, now with the rackets being more powerful its who can hit the ball the hardest.

Lendl got pretty used to this over the years!

Lendl could get riled himself though too just he kept it under his hat better than Mac,

77.5% of his singles for his career. Same with Lendl.

I stand by my statement. ;)
John looks like hes got a tea towel on his head 😂👳🏻
lendl always had macs number
Lendl shot missiles
Maybe the most underrated one hander in history.
The thing about McEnroe's tantrums was that 75% of the time he went off, he was right.
So...everyone had to deal with bad calls

Terrible example to a generation of youngsters. It should have been stamped out at the start (by applying harsh penalties) for the good of the sport.

is mcenroe wearing a towel on his head ? lol
What tournament or money match was that?
John dealt with that very well and made a firm case.
Good call my friend.
does that net look low or what ?

Erupts? When?
I thought Mac made a very sound point there, but possibly the Umpire didn’t understand what he was saying??
Umpire was American. If he didn't understand Mcenroe's point he shouldn't have been an umpire.
Stelle eterne del tennis.
Is that Tom Cruise in the stands @ 6:42
That’s what I thought too.
Why were they counting like 12,13,14 instead of 15, 30, 40 ?
Seems to have been a different kind of tournament for money
