I câme late to the game here very late,.... but wanted to thank you for this effort. I have both a Lodge sportsman grill and my cherished BSR sportsman grill. I watched this video about a year ago. Several times I had checked Ebay for a vintage stovetop with no luck. Last week I finally found one! Truth be known I spotted 2 ! I bought them both but told my wife I only bought one! thanks again for all your great videos.
Oh man, Jackpot! Persistence does pay off in the long run. I'm very happy for you that you found one, [wink] and I'll keep the 2nd one a secret too. It's just between us and 40,000 subscribers. LOL
Great find! We live in the north east and we cook on a Anthracite coal stove during the fall, winter, and spring months. Not only do we make our meals but it bakes our bread and does a pretty good job on roasting turkey. Heats our home too. One trick is to find a cast iron pan with a raised ring on the bottom that fits the lid opening. That way the pan won't slide around when you are cooking in it. We love cast iron too. ✌️♥️👍
I was surfing the net and found a similar stove top made by a company from Ukraine, still thinking if its worth the price. I saw someones RUclips video , and they used a regular coleman griddle to place 2 pans on. It works and at a way cheaper price. I may just go with the griddle idea. Cheers from Central Texas
Very cool . I also prefer to cook my steaks in a cast iron pan . The steak sits in its own juices and the seasoning stays put. Nice set up , sturdy and it will last for generations.
Thats pretty ingenious idea using the cast iron cook top on top of the sportsman grill. I’m surprised I haven’t thought of it my self. I love cooking outside with cast iron. We have a lot of the same cookware. I used and old restored Griswold griddle on my gas grill to make smash burgers
Chris Smith It is a fun cook for sure. I’ve done some other interesting cooks with lids too. I’ve also made a stand for this cooktop that I’ll roll out in another video. Check them out and subscribe to see the new stand in the future video.
Love the wood cook stove top! Bet it's close to 100 yrs old...mine is. People like us are just wired a bit different. There's something fascinating and soothing in our fire and cast iron madness. I built a great rocket stove out of a huge military aluminum soup pot that was left out and got its bottom froze and rounded. Fired up on twigs and branches, it'll cook two stir fry meals in a wok and finish out with 2 steaks in a cast iron skillet. That puppy huffs and puffs just like a rocket and puts out the best seared steak you could ever want. Neat video!
Great video. As far as the cooking evenness of the steaks, one can't rule out the crowded pan. Could have had a pan for each steak. Then, while they rested, cooked up the veg.
I had the same idea. Can't believe lodge hasn't thought of it yet. Just through it in the truck with a bag of charcoal and you've got a great little camp stove/grill ! 👍 You could also use a grittle on it.
It is a really fun way to cook! Necessary? Certainly not. But hey, we could buy everything frozen and cook it in a microwave too. However, where is the fun in that? I wish I could see the things you come up with too. Maybe if you send me a photo I can put it in the community comment section on my channel.
Brian Vaughan the sizes vary from skillet to skillet. They actually used to manufacture them to go with their drive as a set. I have a #8 that just dumb luck fits well.
Brilliant idea .... Can you please tell me the dimensions of wood stove cook top that you purchased? Thank you. That was a good find. I’ll be on the lookout for one. I’m a new subscriber. Lots of good ideas!

Yes sir as you know the Sportsman Grill will burn all the seasoning off of the grill. It will do the same thing to you. QuikTrip to try meet off rub it with a wire brush take it off a little you can set it on a trivet hit it with a wire brush and oil then go eat.
@@TeachaMantoFish I just got some. I think I'll have to try it on some rusty tools, as all my cast iron is in great shape! But from what I have seen, online, it works real good.
Thank you for the video. If you like a pan sear, try using a propane stove burner outdoors with your cast iron pan. You’ll have steak house quality 😊with minimal effort. Finish with butter or whatever you like when the pan temperature allows. Cast iron is the key to a great steak in my opinion.
Liz Edwards I assume you’re talking about my giant cauldron. The steaks looked yummy. I have a question, why did you need a grill top for cooking. Couldn’t you have placed the cast iron skillets on top of the cast iron grill? Does the stove top cook better?? Thank You .
Looks like you could have benefitted from a bit more heat for this cook. It might be an interesting video to compare skillet temperatures with the skillet directly on the grill versus on the cook top.
You do realize they sell deep and shallow, dome top and skillet casserole style matching frying pans for the grill. Matching oval shape to fry, bake, steam and skillet. Perfect fit and finish.
