The label must've seen Linkin Park's success (particularly with Mike Shinoda) and wanted every band to be like that

Well also, Linkin Park fucking knew what they were doing and what they were going for when they did that. And every studio saw and wanted to copy it without understanding why it worked with Linkin Park.

    • @TheRuanEll
      @TheRuanEll 2 года назад +37

Yes, that's what they wanted! And when the band came back and Wind-Up told them they wanted only one song with a rapper they were like "fine, but we want someone amazing doing it". Evanescence and Linkin Park actually were recording their albums (Fallen and Meteora) in the same studio and they briefly talked about it. LP (Mike) turned down the request to do that part for the song obviously so the record label sent the demo of Bring Me To Life to a lot of other great singers from the new metal scene like, Jacoby Shaddix , Sonny Sandoval and more, but they all never responded to that either I guess. So they picked someone that had a deal with Wind-Up and did it. Those were weird times.

Damn I relate to this SO much. I used to be in a local band. We had just got started, but because I believe we had very strong song writing (me and our guitarist), we scored some live radio in-studio spots, local tv chanel accoustic performances, and local festival appearances, right away... and had enough material to begin assembling our own album.
I felt exactly like she did... like an imposter up on the stage. I kept thinking to myself at the time 'I'm in my later 30's... I'm no 'rock star''. When I was singing, I was pretty much fine, but when the band expected me to start being the mouthpiece and fill in the spaces leading into the next songs, or other things like that... I wouldn't do it. I felt like the audience would hear my non-singing voice and recognize that I was just some old dude trying to play the role of 'front man'.
I ended up leaving the band, and I regret it every day. What could have been... we had some pretty solid tunes.

As a musician that also used to be in a local band that reached the level of playing live shows. Every show I played i always felt awkward. Not because of stage fright - I studied music in my younger years and my school used to throw me into these battle of the bands events between schools in the same region, So playing to crowds of 100+ is normal for me.
But i too felt like an imposter. Even though I was playing live shows, I still doubted my skills as a musician throughout and there was really no need for me to harbor such doubt. Because after I left school, I ended up playing as part of a Church worship band for almost 8-10 years. I was there a long time, and if theres one thing that ive learnt throughout my journey is that those people know how to *JAM* - I played my fair share of guitar for my church youth group and even graduated to playing Sunday services -- Only then was i really really super anxious because youre not just performing to people of the same age anymore that youre familiar with, but for their parents, Aunties, Uncles and grand parents too!
Were there always musicians that were better than me?? Of course! I wasnt particularly a very technical player, nor could i do lightning fast runs up and down the neck like lot of guitarists could but I played to my strengths which were very Santana or BB King'esk skills- You gotta dial in the right tone and play that one note or chord at the right time that would just blow the entire crowd away.
The way i look back at it. I spent so many years pushing myself to be a more technical and skilled player to fit into a gap of my own creation that i could shoe horn myself into when in reality the band i was performing with never once asked me to be that guy.
We were a 4 peice. I played mainly rhythm guitar and did lead work on some of the songs when required but for the most part the lead singer on the piano/keyboard was always always the main star and I was happy with that arrangement.
if you watch a lot of live shows on youtube, you'll see that a lot of the lead singers talk about a lot of random shit to fill gaps during an intermission. It doesnt have to be a high IQ conversation. Every front man does it. Sometimes other band members do it too. You push the drummer, bass player or keyboard player out onto the stage to do a solo session or have a game of musical charades with the crowd while the others take a quick break. Hell, Even the bass player from the foo fighters managed to get all the people at their show singing Bohemian Rhapsody.
      Just be you.

ugh, i love evanescence so much! i always could see amy lee covering “i refuse” by aaliyah or them having a collab (before 2001).

I will say though: that particular song works perfectly with the rap co-vocals. I heard the "as inteded" original and it just sounds flatter.

I remember loving that mix, then listening to the full album and finding out it was only for one song. I felt cheated. It took me some time to return to evanescence lol.

That was actually the reason I started into listening to Evanscence. I loved 12 stones and ironically that it probably he only part he has ever rapped in his life

Exactly, I had 12 stones first album back in the day and I don't remember even one time he rapped.

@@Cristi81272 I think they actually wrote the song tbh. Everything about it sounds like 12 stones and evanescense one-hit-wonder never wrote anything like that again.
