    Brilliant - I had the honour to play with Paul Renee for a couple of years where he was brought to Australia to Newcastle KB United as their key international player in the National League - he was a touch of class - I learnt a lot as he his encouragement helped me to become a better player during my career in the National Soccer League of the time - thank you Paul.

    Hated Leeds growing up in 60/70’s watching my beloved Toffees. Time mellows us all & now I’ve come to have real appreciation & affection for these old greats. You could relate to these British working class lads. There’s not the same affinity with the modern game & players.

    I have been lucky enough to meet Big Jack and Norman socially , I have never met Paul but gave his son a lift back to a village near Harrogate following the 1 nil play off win at ER against Charlton in 1987. My god his son stood next to me in the Kop , Paul’s double ! Scrounged a lift home, but gave me petrol money, like his dad, an honourable gent.

    Im a Rangers fan, and i have always had a real soft spot for The Mighty Leeds. I had a friend as a child who was Leeds daft. Then we had the epic Battle of Britain with them in 92/93. The inaugural year of the European Champions League. I hope to see Leeds in the Premiership next season, hopefully alongside Nottingham Forest. 😉👍🇬🇧

    Man Utd fan here. I think the 3 players hit the nail on the head regarding the amount of times they came runners up. Like they say, for several years they was competing for everything, and, got to the final stages of all the competitions. This, and only using 14 players, is perhaps the main reason, why such a great team, had more runners up than anyone. Too successful. I do remember as a 12yr old watching the European Cup Final against Bayern Munich, and they was definately robbed of that game, someone had been bought off big time. You have to remember Munich was 3 x on the trot Champions of Europe but Leeds made them look like a pub team. They was superior in every area of the pitch. Even at 12yrs of age, it wasn't a surprise to me at the final whistle that lots of "frisbee's" suddenly entered the arena. They should have burnt the ground down as well.

      Thanks for your large mindedness,Melvyn. Because of my age I was able to see the Busby babes at elland road in ,I think 56..Tommy Taylor ,Roger Byrne (my favourite) Duncan Edwards etc. Our primary school l recall had a mass celebrated for them..I still remember the hymn sung and the nuns leading us to church and the frontspiece photo in the paper. Also the ball spinning out of a tackle between John Charles and Roger Byrne into the crowd and the rumour of it knocking out a spectator ...stirring times indeed..

    I always remember Norman Hunter and Terry Cooper coming into my local pub on a Friday night. They were my Gods and were in my pub.
    I was amazed that they drank pints of Tetley bitter (daft I know now but at 18 years old it was a revelation) They had a good few drinks and chatted with everybody.
    I went to the match the next day and of course, they were playing. I told everyone around me that they were in The Commercial last night - it was met with total indifference hahaha

  • @stephenhodgson3506
    @stephenhodgson3506 6 лет назад +6

    I'll never stop saying this but when Don Revie took the England job the man the board should have gone for was big Jack. He knew the club inside out and the players all respected him. He had proved himself at Middlesborough and he would have brought new young players in and slowly moved the old guard out. In my opinion the wilderness years would never have happened and a legacy would have been built.

    • @steakandsidjustleeds

      Good post and good point.. Giles should have got it IMO but the boardroom divvered because Bremner threw his cap in.. inretropect big Jack would have been perfect

    • @stephenhodgson3506
      @stephenhodgson3506 6 лет назад +1

      @@steakandsidjustleeds I think when you look back and see how the three (Charlton, Bremner and Giles) did in their managerial careers Charlton stands out above them by a mile, but hindsight is a perfect art. I think it was telling that big Jack said in the broadcast that he was already doing his coaching badges when in the army back in the 50's while both Bremner and Giles only thought about them towards the end of their playing careers. I remember Alf Ramsey saying that big Jack was always talking and questioning him about football and football management. Of all the 66 World Cup winning side big Jack was the only one that succeeded as a manager. Another case of if onlys however.
