I’m either fishing or watching RUclips videos about fishing. You are truly one of the best on RUclips, no joke . And this video is 100% spot on. 101 basic fundamentals. The things you just said, I have instinctively learned from trial and error. What a great reminder. Thank you for what you do brother
Same for sure. It sucks, but sometimes I fish days I know are slow or will be rough. I use them to experiment with lures, get the feel of some new ones, and learn the action and what it feels like when the actions change.
I agree. There have been days when I'd just find a shady spot, put my trolling motor on spot lock and just sit there for an hour or so with my fishing buddy which just happens to be the one that never judges me or anything else. My dog.
I don't catch a lot of fish, yet I find enjoyment roaming around on my kayak trying different techniques. Also don't mind finding lost lures that people can't get to.
Thank you for the support and advice. I've been fishing for over 65 years and still feel like I suck often when I go out. This video was very helpful!!!
I used to be one of these discouraged fishermen. What I've found is, YES, it is a location thing. You can cover a whole lake and with bad luck and timing, 70% or more of your casts just might not put a lure in eyesight or earshot of the fish. This is why people are so protective of their "spots" more so than they are with whole bodies of water. Picking up bass fishing and expecting to go out and slay every day was a huge mistake I made when I started. What I ended up finding is that you need to take LOTS of time and failure, explore the obscure areas and find your own spots. New original spots, instead of asking around to share others spots. There are plenty out there, and they may even change over time, but you can find the reliable "honey holes" that you hear about. The important thing is the know that exploring and getting skunked some days is still making progress, and tomorrow, that weird spot you thought about while looking at maps might be the one.
I just made this same mistake! New body of water, and spent almost the whole day on a few spots instead of moving around looking for the high percentages locations. Good advice!
4:04 This video is really speaking to me at 4 mins in. I’ve catfished all my life (48yrs old) never had luck with bass. I bought a pontoon in 2020 & have it docked on a lake 20 minutes from the house here in Ohio. My father in law & I really wanted to get into bass fishing last year & went out every Fri afternoon after work. Only had 1 pole when I started last year, then bought a second so I could have 2 rigs set up. Didn’t catch not one bass & my father in law caught maybe 2. Fast forward to this season…I bought 2 more poles so I now have 4 rigs. It’s the end of June & I had no luck all year as of yesterday, then I caught my first 2 bass. Both under a pound but I now have my confidence lure!!! The biggest shock was how the bass strike. I was expecting a big strike but both bass I thought were snags. I don’t know if bigger bass strike harder but now I know when it feels like a snag it could be a bite. Thanks for the videos!
OMG, I'm listening to this video as I'm fishing right now and I followed your advice and I caught a fish. Just right now oh, I wish I could send you a picture. Thank you!
@BassFishingHQ well. You already have helpful information down and it seems the technology is following suite. Thanks for doing what you do brother. God bless and keep at it!👊
Thanks for this. I’m new to bass fishing. Fishing altogether. My 4 year old son told me one morning he wanted to go fishing. So we went out and got some rods, reels and senkos. That was late April, and we’ve only caught one small largemouth since then. I’m in southern Idaho and guys are saying the long winter we had messed with the bite. We’re near the snake river so I think we’re gonna start to target smallmouths instead.
I have no clue about southern Idaho but in my experience wacky rigged senkos are a great bait for largemouth. Try a popper or a Ned rig too, those are big time producers for me in northern NY. I catch largemouth and smallmouth.
I have been bank fishing for 45 plus years... And nobody teaches it better than Ty... Keep moving until you find that 10% of the lake that holds 90% of the fish, certain times of the year that is very true... Keep it moving with your confidence baits!!!
this type of video was exactly what i needed to watch and learn from after getting skunked at two new ponds. great ino on breaking down new spots and covering water.
The drop shot is VERY similar to the Tokyo Rig and, like many other things, the Japanese people KNOW how to catch fish. These rigs keeps the bait JUST off the bottom, where fish prefer to spend a lot of their time.
Gonna be honest I heard that first part as “you don’t suck at fishing, you just aren’t doing the things good fishermen do” 😂😂 naaaah man you’ve helped me a ton with fishing just in the past week that I’ve been watching
Amen my friend, you are correct 💯💯💯💯. Location location location and covering water and just time on the water are 3 of the main things that I'd focus on. Keep those 3 things in mind you'll catch more fish
To add to my last comment, I have always remembered what The King Mr. Bill Dance taught me one rainy Sunday when he said, when you are working your bait if anything at all feels out of place "Simply" lol in the words of Mr.Bill set the hook. More times than not you will be surprised to find a bass has gobbled up your bait.
I LOVE your new setup. Much more enjoyable for me to watch/listen to... but your videos have always been the best! By the way, I have that mic and use it a lot in my music studio and it rocks.
Great video. Love the set up. I’m one of those anglers that will move around till I find them. I had an angler today tell me the bite was slow and I had already caught at least 10. Keep it up. I have learned so much from your channel.
Some of my most memorable fishing days on the lake, were spent in the “suck” mode for 6 hours, then only to move and find the feeding bass. For the next few hours, it was great fishing. Don’t be afraid to run the boat to another part of the lake. Use your guts and instincts and If you want to try somewhere else, do it. I always think of Bassmaster Classic winner Randy Howell on Guntersville.
Well I am one of those guys you mentioned. I fish Dale Hollow lake primarily and it’s pretty heavily fished so as a new angler I really appreciate all your videos! Thank you sir!
Exactly bud. From my experience on any body of water , 75 to 95 % of that body of water is fishlless. Give or take a certain percentage but the main thing is you have to actually work at it if you wanna catch bass. Many mornings after I could not feel my casting hand from casting over n over n over. You have to love love casting and hitting your target like throwing a base ball. Ounce you understand that the bait you choose is secondary.
lol, Thanks for the daily affirmation! Good luck with your new set and channel design. I'm sure you'll crush it. Also gotta give props to my tri-state area homies, here's a quick story, hope you get a laugh...road trip from Pgh to Clendening Lake OH, 1st time on a flood control lake, I couldn't anchor my yak with 6# and >40' of anchor wizard, it felt like a nymph perfectly ticking the bottom of a stream, got more workout that day but caught a few nonetheless.
I almost always have a Jig, Spinnerbait, Buzz Bait and Senko on my deck. Sometimes a Crankbait, I track what I catch the fish I weigh in during tournaments and really don’t need anything else. There was a time that I didn’t lay out the Senko because that’s what every co angler fished. For some reason they stopped? I could really just fish a Spinnerbait and a Jig.
Once you find a spot where they bite, and if you're with a buddy, you can "double up" on the bass. When bass are caught, they often panic and regurgitate their stomach contents so they can fight better. Other bass know this and will follow them around (as you noted a bass following your bass in another video) and eat that up. So before you land your fish, your buddy can drop his bait into the water near your fish and catch another bass easily - doubling up! You should do a video on this.
Ty, im fishing a 2 dayer this weekend just getting all ready now. Its my FIRST solo tournament and to say im nervous would be an understatement but ive calmed down now just gonna go fish and have FUN
Great advice on having confidence baits. I know we all have a few and everybody's are different. This vid goes right along with your lake breakdown series. Awesome vid as always👍
Gotta admit, those electronics help you a ton as well. I'm a bank to boat rental guy so it is a lot harder for us. Granted I do have my confident baits on at all times when I start. It's definitely taught me where to look (or start). Then after that it's all about covering water.
Man you always bring alot of great material to the table, have you ever fished the ross barnett reservoir in mississippi? Probably one of the most pressured lakes in the world...
I bank(I’ve never been on a boat) fish at the lakes around Delaware Ohio but I have so much trouble finding bass or I’m using wrong baits. I’ve tried tons. It has lots of pressure.
Both. 👍🏼 I actually try to find a more natural looking white/shad pattern chatterbait and trailer for clearer water (Like a “clear water shad” color chatterbait with a Tennessee shad Yamamoto Zako). I’ve had that same clear water setup tied on and pulled fish out of a mud line. Often in stained water in the spring I’ll run a “blueback herring” color chatterbait (it’s primarily white) with a green pumpkin white Zako. Green pumpkin, black and blue, and darker colors work well in stained water also. On the flip side, I’ve heard river guys say they sometimes like black and blue in clean water too. Tons of vibration means they don’t always have to see it.
Did not know you were running a podcast. Great idea. Dig it. Also, a very important subject. If I can't catch em on a trick worm or a fluke, I start to assume I'm not around fish.
I really needed this video! Thanks dude. I’m going to implement some of this my next trip out. I’m not good at covering water because my confidence baits are all finesse baits 😂. Ive been knowing I need to work on that but this video helped give me some direction.
Can you one about arkansas because that is where I live. I normally fish Lake Hamilton and Lake ouachita, but I haven't been catching much. Today, I was fishing in a cove, and they were manely in the shade pockets.
I’m new to freshwater fishing and I’m starting to expand my freshwater arsenal. I have no confidence lures so we will see what happens the next time I try
Great format!!! Have you done a video on the new mini max chatterbaits. Have bought some of the 1/8 oz but can’t keep them from coming to the surface an blowing out!!!! Help please. Thanks Tyler.
Honestly best video ever!! I have been there just fishing dead water all day thinking I have the wrong color or not holding my tongue right haha 😂 please expand on this subject possibly with on the water examples. Great stuff!!!!
Especially when I see fish on my sonar, I have a hard time psychologically just blowing through a spot or spots if I don't get hits quickly and Im always thinking to myself I just haven't found the lure or presentation they're looking for at the moment in this spot (or this day).
Come to falls lake raleigh nc it sucks most of the time 90% fishing 10% catching I been fishing it in a bass boat since they started flooding it back in like 1980,places that held fish for 35 yrs off shore structure all community holesbeat to death hard to find this last spring not to bad this spring sucked for me 7 bass in 6hrs my best day last spring worst spring ever
Awesome video. I am a retired Navy Commander and finally have the time to fish. I appreciate you showing the lures and views on presentation. Does color of lure make a difference? Chatter lure has been great regardless of clarity of water. Thanks for making fishing fun and exciting. I hope to get good enough to do a tournament one day! Great Video!
I don’t know much, but I do know that the color of the lure is dependent on the water clarity. With clearer water, it’s recommend to use more natural “fish-like” lures with grey tones. In murky water, bright flashy colored lures are recommended. The lower the water clarity, the brighter the lure and vice versa.
Love your videos. Can you please explain when to use a Drop Shot Rig and when to use a Carolina Rig? They seem really close in setup and function to me. Thanks.
First off, love your videos. most are very informational. BUT, in southwestern New Hampshire we have a lot of small lakes and ponds. 1500 acres or less. catching 5lb + isnt as common as down south and not very often you catch more than one fish in a spot is rare. some. most videos on youtube are for the big southern and western lakes. only northeastern lake ive seen fished is champlain
Fellow Ohio Angler. Fish the South West portion mostly. Always trying to improve and become more competitive within my club. I'll admit I've always struggled with the fast fishing. I'm very methodical when I work an area and I'm sure I waste a lot of time as a result. At what point do you slow down? Covering water quickly makes since, but there is also the argument of not leaving fish to find fish. When your on them, what is the deciding point to move on? I've had times where yes I'm on them, but they don't have the size I need. When is that deciding factor that you leave fish to hopefully find bigger fish?
I feel most of the fishing is done before you even get on the water. It's map study and weather trends. Once you get on the water you're just checking waypoints hopefully the bass are in a pattern you recognize from past experience.
I’m not one for covering a lot of water I want to thoroughly dissect every inch of the water. I want to fish it completely and thoroughly before I move on. Can I miss fish that are biting yes but you can covering lots of water too. Covering water you can miss a “bite window” much more easily. But everyone has their own way to find fish and find active fish. I also like shallow water rather than deep water. I am a cover fisherman more than a structure fisherman. I like structure that has cover on it best!
I'd call being in the wrong area sucking at fishing at a certain point. It's very similar to setting up tree stand in a downtown business district where, or a duck blind in the middle of the Mojave. There's hope, though. Nobody has to suck forever if they're willing to learn.
This video NAILED it....the lure and technique you are using is not important (assuming you are using a lure appropriate for the species), it is simply about being where the fish are, and fishing at the appropriate depth.
i fish a small lake in central ohio alot. ive been trying to figure out. i can catch fish but always one at each spot i can never find a spot that they are stacked up in
Can you explain thermacline, and does it effect ponds. I fish a lot of ponds in South Carolina and most are under 10 foot in depth. The surface temp is around 90 degrees.
I just spent a week working a lake on my vacation, and I would come across areas where I got bit immediately and frequently...but they were all small. What does that mean, when you find spots that look so good and have a ton of small fish...is it that big fish are somewhere else, or they just aren't interested in your offering? Why wouldn't larger fish be there? I am not sure what to do in this scenario...keep working that spot with different baits, or keep moving to find larger fish?
I am still a beginner. So trying to learn, but only ever have known the basic push button bait casters. I am also only able to fish 3 bodies of water in my area because of either distance or because of being restricted to bank only fishing. Granted, I am happy to catch anything. Bluegill, crappie, bass, catfish, etc. But I don't have a confidence lure yet. I was traumatized as a kid away from fishing for years, so just getting back into it. But the 4 times I have been out, I have gotten skunked 3 times and one baby catfish the other time. But I have been buying lures whenever I have a chance. Even have a bunch of my grandfather's old lures. I still need to learn how to use a spinning rod/reel. But, I need to learn how to tie knots as well, because it is a skill I don't possess, so I only know simple loop knots, not a clinch knot or nail knot, which I am told are the two most common fishing knots. I appreciate you teaching me things. I just feel stupid sometimes because I am restricted to a certain area and can't seem to figure the fish out. With my being diabetic, I can only walk for so long before I tire out. So I can't cover 10 miles of a creek or lake. I might be able to do 1 or 2. I also don't own a boat, and living in an apartment, probably never will. But, I am trying to learn, just wish I had someone who could break it down in a way I can learn easier and help me "get it".
This is why I love fishing for smallies. They are so predictable especially in rivers. When I’m fishing rivers I can just about call out casts that will catch bass.
Tyler I'd love to go fishing with you. Close to home in pickaway county. Very small 200 acre lake very very very pressured and a very challenging lake. If your interested let's get together man make this happen it would be a great video for a lot of viewers who like me are forced to fish according to life and schedules. And I really think it would apply to a ton of viewers and supporters.
@@BassFishingHQ Thanks - I am going there this Friday to fish. Do you have any tips on where some good locations may be for this time of year to catch small or large mouth bass. Love your videos and thanks for any information.
So much easier to learn when you have someone teaching you instead of trying to figure it out yourself. Keep it coming Thanks

Its super hot all across the south east, you should be in deep deeeeep lakes like lake martin in Alabama or a creek
Love your videos. Can you please explain when to use a Drop Shot Rig and when to use a Carolina Rig? They seem really close in setup and function to me. Thanks.
Thanks man, I’ve hit a wall I guess recently and needed to hear this lol.
Man I so sick of getting my ass whooped at these tournaments I feel like I know what I’m doing out there but the tournament show me otherwise
What is that top water lure hes using at 4:55 ?
I feel most of the fishing is done before you even get on the water. It's map study and weather trends. Once you get on the water you're just checking waypoints hopefully the bass are in a pattern you recognize from past experience.
This the best video I’ve seen in a long time
I’m working on mastering my Chatterbait technique. It is still a bait I have low confidence in.
Tyler what lake are you talking about that you know very well
I’m not one for covering a lot of water I want to thoroughly dissect every inch of the water.
Great video bro I have a question what do you do when you are a co-angler and your boater has you in a bad area
Skunked last two trips fun fishing as a coangler. Im done until fall.
This video NAILED it....the lure and technique you are using is not important (assuming you are using a lure appropriate for the species), it is simply about being where the fish are, and fishing at the appropriate depth.
For your lake break series can you do High Rock Lake in NC next?
i fish a small lake in central ohio alot. ive been trying to figure out. i can catch fish but always one at each spot i can never find a spot that they are stacked up in
This helped me so much!
Can you explain thermacline, and does it effect ponds. I fish a lot of ponds in South Carolina and most are under 10 foot in depth. The surface temp is around 90 degrees.
Ty, what tournament do you fish Tuesday nighters? I fished clendening Saturday got 1st n big bass. All on a jerkbait and watermelon bitsy bug 🐛
Good video bud as always
Some days ita just badluck. Last time I went, my buddy and I were throwing the same exact color senko to the same spot. He caught 5, I caught zero.
Thanks Ty thought you were getting ready to spin a couple records😂😂
Enjoyed the content! Also, I caught a few fish today.
Great Vid 👍
Love your videos.. what type of line do you use on the poppers. Thank you
I've got them clear down to 40° on a ChatterBait stealth.
This is why I love fishing for smallies. They are so predictable especially in rivers. When I’m fishing rivers I can just about call out casts that will catch bass.

Lake Eustis on the Harris Chain… send me the coordinates 😂😂😂
Tyler I'd love to go fishing with you. Close to home in pickaway county. Very small 200 acre lake very very very pressured and a very challenging lake. If your interested let's get together man make this happen it would be a great video for a lot of viewers who like me are forced to fish according to life and schedules. And I really think it would apply to a ton of viewers and supporters.
Do you fish Alum Creek reservoir in central Ohio?
Multiple times a week! My favorite lake in Ohio
@@BassFishingHQ Thanks - I am going there this Friday to fish. Do you have any tips on where some good locations may be for this time of year to catch small or large mouth bass. Love your videos and thanks for any information.
