Bro you said it all !!!! I catch a 3 pound smallie with a wobble head and a berkley pit boss watermelon orange flake and they love it right here in MA reservoir !!! Matt keep on the good work !!!! Tight lines everyone !!!
Thanks matt good video. Those days that you dont get bites but you get a huge fish.Well 40 years ago my buddy and i started calling it NO FISH BIG FISH and we still do to this day .Just thaught it was so cool to have you confirm somthing we notised years ago. Thanks Brother
I put a hurting on’em today, back to back 5’s plus 6 more from 4,5-2.5lb in about 30 minutes. All with a white 3/4 oz jackhammer 4.5 spunkshad in heavy grass and 10’ of water. A 3/8oz crosseyes chatterbait with a super fluke trailer has also been a good producer here in Wv. This channel has helped me bring my skill level up several notches. Thanks to Tim and Matt. 👍🏻
Spot on info. On the really hot days I bring snorkel gear instead of fishing gear to collect crank baits. The fish aren’t just in the shade, they’re in the shady shade. So don’t just punch randomly in Lilly pads, look for trees and stumps in the grass and pads, the tanks are laying on the shady side of stumps, even if stump is surrounded by pads
We fished our club tournament last Saturday and it was 90 degrees and 75% humidity. Sweat was dripping off everything. My partner and I put 15 lbs in the boat. A limit by 9:00 am was amazing. Docks, pontoons and trees overhanging the lake that’s where we found them. We were short by 1 lb of a club record. This just proves what this video is saying. We culled out 2-3 lb fish all the way to 2:00 pm part of the hottest part of the day.
Great information, much appreciated. Especially your adding in the specific rods for certain baits. I have most of them fortunately. Love that 7'10" St Croix Ranger for a lot of uses, now I know to use it on the Tactical Wake as well.
Thanks. This video helps so much. I struggle with fishing in the heat and this is exactly what I needed to know before my smallmouth fishing trip in WI.
@@608anglingwisconsin5 My trip was canceled due to a family member who was put in hospice care. I was not sure where I was going to fish because I am not very familiar with the area.
I've got a question for ya. In a video you said that the strength of a rod can stop the hook set for a not as powerful angler. Do you feel that you more or less get that same affect frogging from a kayak? When you set the hook your kayak moves forward quite a bit sometimes. Just wondering if I need to take another look at gear and maybe dial something even better in.
Two things. I work outside on black rubber roofs doing solar. So fishing in the summertime is peace for me #2. The lake I fish has a float pattern I swear. Lake is used for a summer camp and is littered with floating trampolines, slides, bouncy things for kids. Fish use them for cover and near by aerators. Pretty easy pattern. Find shade and o2 fish are always there. I love summer
That Dark of the dark is spot on. Stuck an 8 2 days ago when it was scorching. Only a few other bites, but I found a wood laydown in an area with zero wood at all and knew it was my chance. Threw big Freedom Jig in Bluegill pattern on the log and twitched it till it dropped off. The line got tight, and I knew I wasn't hung, cracked the whip, and it was on. That fish darn near worked me, with an Orochi Spec R and 15 lb line, but man, it made the day! Too much fun, and dealing with the heat was worth it! 😂 *edit... paused the video around 16.00 to comment came back and you started talking jigs. BTW, the trailer was a "RI Sweet Beaver" in green pumpkin with the tail tips dunked in Chartreuse "Spike It". Cracked a number of good fish on it yesterday but they were no 8...lol.
Bout to be on Lake Gaston NC in the middle of August, and yup I'm a heavier guy so I would usually stay in during this time, but Imma give this a try this year and see how I do, Thanks!!
Being from New England , summer time is the only time to fish unless you want to fish through a hole in the ice which imo is not fun fishing. I just wish we had an actual summer this year . If we get one then thank you for the tips
Yeah, here in Northeast Louisiana, it's just about a health hazard; heat index up to 115° easy. We pray for rain. And being a guy from Seattle area, it's weird to do.
Dude! I have noticed the same thing. On days I’m not really getting bit are the days I know my odds of catching a big one “8+ lbs”are in my favor for some reason. On days I’m raking them in just seems like I’ve never caught anything over 5 lbs. nice to know I’m not the only one who’s noticed this.
Thanks so much matt and Tim for all the great info. My lake is all reeds around the lake. Grass gets sprayed and dies off looks bad for a while. Would the wake bait work good casting and retrieving close to the reeds?
I have a question. How would you go about it bank fishing? I am restricted to this option not owning a boat. So there is a couple of ponds I can fish, One Creek I can fish and a River I can fish, but only from the bank. So, wondering how to go about it. (Bass, Bluegill, Crappie, Catfish, Redear Sunfish, Carp and Gar are all around in this area). I am interested in all of them. Not trying to over fish an area, but still want to put some on the dinner table. It just gets so hot and miserable sometimes I can't take anymore. Even with plenty of water and a Gatorade with me. I have trouble this time of year fishing because I am at seizure risk. I have had so much trouble that I am waiting for late August or Early September before I go out because the sun will be rising a little later and give me a chance to hit the water when the sun is coming up because the parks are not open during the night. (For bank fishing. Boat fishing from the river is, but not bank fishing). I also have to take the Bus, so there is that to take in consideration. (Not allowed to drive because of seizures). I appreciate the video and any advice you could give me as I am still learning.
Hey Matt what about this year when California lakes still have cold water rolling in ? I was at Millerton lake and the main lake was 80* and back in the river was 56*
Hell yeah, Matty! Solid info, excellent points were covered. You might one of the most outgoing knowledgeable fisherman that I follow. As a old arse novice, I really appreciate the effort you and tim put in! 👊👊👊
What can I say I got back right in the time frame you stated. In the heat if the day it was brutal. I caught a ton of the biggest fish ive caught on that river. When I got back and watched this i laughed because it described exactly what I was doing.
Beware bank anglers. Walking everywhere in the middle of a hot summers day can be dangerous. Carry some ice cold water (at least 64 ounces) and take a friend with you if the place you are going is isolated. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke is not something you want to deal with out there fishing.
I want to buy a deep crank reel. You’re recommended one has a 7.2 ratio. Would a slower ratio for more physical ease work OK? Any recommendation appreciated.
For the deep cranking is speed cranking a good option to get those lethargic fish to react even in the summer heat? Or should I be doing a more steady retrieve. Using a 7.2:1 reel. Thanks!
Still trying to figure out my home lake. Have had so.e.luck on the wobblehead and a mag worm but can't seem to get the big one or many bites but I'll keep plugging
Good morning everyone I recently purchased the magdraft freestyle and would like to know a good rod for throwing that with a 6 or 8/0 Beast hook I've been looking at the Fitzgerald 7 foot 6 heavy. All-purpose or the lews 7 foot 6 heavy super duty.
Personally the heat doesn’t keep me off the water as much as it is the other people pleasure boating, swimming and rock skipping ( my “home water” is a 1/4 mile stretch of a dammed creek that basically is a long pond that occasionally has current. Being a bank guy it’s brutal trying to fish when every inch of bank has kids splashing and adults drunk.
Also, I think it should be noted that fish mortality is high in the summer so catch them, weigh them, maybe get a few quick pics and then put them back. Keeping them out of the water and or flopping around on deck or the shore is how alpha females and males get killed.
My theory on why the big bites come more often on off days or times was always that the smaller fish can’t feed while the groups of big ones are hunting because they will get ate by the big ones or forced out of the feed because they can’t compete.naturally this forces there feeding windows into different times. Just my 2 sense
I absolutely love the wobble head, but for some reason it also attracts the toothy critters all too often. It triggers pike and bowfin in the heat for sure. Great round up and as much as I hate the heat, I’m gonna be out there on the grind!👊💥🎣
No matter how much I try I fail miserably at skipping a bait under anything, out of 100 tries I do it on accident about twice , I’ve put some time in practicing , just can’t succeed. So I find it a lot harder to get bites cause I can’t reach the dark black shade.
I have been fishing the last 4 weekends and haven’t caught anything I have tried different things and colors it’s been really fun hanging out with my dad but come one a bite would be even better know what I mean
Where I live & fish (SETX), it’s HOT! Like REALLY hot. Like, my TAP WATER is 90°!! The bass are at the banks UNTIL the sun comes up, then they NOPE the f()ck out and head to the bottom. You can’t hit em from the banks.
Well ...this video should ad about 100 boats at the lake Saturday 😂
Could be 200 ima still catch some fish but sometimes its not always bass that bite tho, especially when im cranking 😅
Thats not even the best part… lol 😂 We are also going to be throwing the same baits…😅
That’s why I’m glad I’m heading up to canada in a few weeks, a ton of bass up there and barley any fisherman on the lakes

Great video, very informative! I’ve started night fishing recently, at 60 I cant take the heat like I did when I was younger.
I night fish all the time. I live in South Texas and it is 109 to 111 everyday. Now the secret is out and I have a lot more company out there at night

Do you ever use a Tokyo Rig with a rugby weight instead of a wobble head?
In Houston, we catch good 5#'ers when it's a million degrees out in the shady little creeks leading into Lake Houston. Texas rig is the way to go!

Don’t forget about the old school C-rig. It’s killer right now to slowly fish fast. ;)
