Hi Friends, could we have an SM57 alternative? Today we're checking out the $99 Lewitt MTP 440 DM! To show you what this mic can do, I used it as I would use the SM57 to see if it can hold its own against the industry standard. At only $99, it’s remarkably affordable.
My favorite alternative to an SM57 would be the Heilsound PR30 and PR31 BW (which is the same as the 30, just smaller/more compact with a slight different response in terms of side and rear rejection). The PR30 just won out in every shootout Vs. a slew of dynamics here for cloning my amps via profiles in my Kemper (used in blend of three mics with an Advanced Audio Microphones CM49, which is an M49 style mic, and a Shure KSM 353 ED, which beat most heavy hitter ribbons on hand, including Royers, AEA, and Coles, etc.). There's just something "special" about the Heilsound PR30, I almost can't believe how much I prefer it to an SM57 on most sources, but lately it really tends to win by a large margin for me.
Lol, so great, all your videos seem to be right at time for me - looking for an 57 alternative at the moment :D Thanks again, for the vid as well as for the giveaway!
I definitely have to check out some of the Lewitt microphones. They seem to sound great, have a good build quality and a very reasonable price. The LCT 440 Pure and the 640 TS are on my list, and now I put the MTP 440 on it as well.
@@shestudiossheila7423 I feel you. Got myself a Klark Teknik KT-2A and another 76-KT and a couple of plugins on recent Black Friday sales and due to the latest events in my life, my next big purchase will probably be a matching set of wedding rings. At least that's what my girlfriend told me and I guess I should better listen to the woman ;-) But I still keep those Lewitts on my list :-)
Most of the time i use my Sontronics STC-2 Mic. It is gorgeous for vocals and acoustic guitar. For guitar cabs i use the sennheiser e609. Pretty good mic tho!
Thx Warren. I usually watch on my game console, so I don't get to like and comment, and I know how important it is to the algorithm to get your videos out to people. It is the least I can do for all the help, advice, and knowledge you give to the community. Thanks Warren great video as always!!!!!!!!
Warren, not only did the mic sound great but wow, YOU sound great. That sound reminds me of the kind of West Coast harmony guitars you would hear on say, Dan Fogelberg's 70's tunes like "Hurtwood Alley". Love it!
Which is better can you Suggest? Zoom H1N or Shure sm 57 ? Keeping aisde which can be used in DAW or not. Suggest, asking on Raw sound comparisons of acoustic guitar.
Good morning Warren, hope you're doing marvelously well! I have a question perhaps best suited for FAQ Friday. When building out your studio, how did you approach cable management going to/from your equipment and what were some mistakes you made in the beginning you wish you had known before?
I'd say the 2 budget mics that have really impressed me are the Neewer NW-700 and the Samson R21S. The Neewer is a pretty basic condenser mic that you can grab for less than 30 bucks but does a great job at capturing vocals with some great detail. I've been using it for about a year now and it does the job quite well. And well, the R21S is around the same price, but it's a dynamic cardioid mic. It was my first vocal mic, actually and I've been able to use it for over 4 years with no problems. It's quite versatile for recording even guitars and strings, but it'll never beat a SM57. Great video, Warren! Greetings from Chile! Ps: Hopefully I'll win one of those Lewitt mics ;)
Nice sounds. Guess the main diferences will be noticed in the processing and the eq needed. Kind'a same field of the 57 or did it need more/less processing? Amazing work and review for sure. Thanks Warren
Do you have any music of your own available? You are an absolutely marvelous musician! I'd personally like to hear more of your stuff. Thanks. Oh, and I like the mic... hope I win!
Ok, my two cents on the topic: zippered carrying case or microphone storage bag. Ok, I looked it up in two large online shops. One is in the UK, one in the US. Which is which? By the way: The MTP 440 DM sounds really great. Thanks for the great video!
It sounds really good Warren, thanks. I would have really liked to hear the tracks solo, and also an A-B comparison of a 57 and the Lewitt on the acoustic and electric. Given a choice, miking a guitar amp and bass amp for music in an Alt. Country style, (think Ryan Adams, Jason Isbell) which mic would you pick, SM57 or the Lewitt MTP440?
If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Like the attempts Shure has made to "improve" on the SM57 and SM58, and many other companies as well. I still love using my old Sennheisers much better than the newer improved ones... Can you really make a better spoon or fork? That being said, I'm sure its a fine mic, and its always nice to be a little different...
Awesome stuff as usual dude. Quick question for you, I've just been asked to record a choir during their performance in a few weeks time, I've not been able to go and check out the venue yet (but will be in a few days). What would you suggest I look out for while checking out the venue to figure out the best place to put mics etc, I'm under the impression this church is fairly large but am told no in house PA or anything like that. Thanks in advance dude, keep it up
Hi SyNN Unsworth Marvellous question! I would probably go with a Blumlein, individual sections and two sets of room mics. A space pair and an ambient pair to get the sound of the Church!
@@Producelikeapro awesome thanks dude, I'm not sure what mic's are available (I only have a t.bone MB75 or t.bone SC440 usb mic here at the moment) hoping to be able to borrow a couple of a friend too.. really hoping they already have a simple set up already though (they have choir stand apparently so fingers crossed). Hopefully I'll be able to work something out using your advice.
Sounds "marvelously well" to me. Buuuut are they nearly indestructible? I've seen one (1) 57 break in nearly twenty years. And they've withstood abuse and neglect that would trash most competitor products. I believe that's some of the reason they're such a go-to well respected workhorse. I've even run them as drum overheads on a live gig in an emergency. They did great. .....then again, a good mic for $100 you can't go wrong either way.
Hello all, If someone wouldn't mind giving me some advice, I'm going to treat myself for xmas with a €300 budget and buy either a Roswell Mini K47 Condenser Microphone or a Neuman TLM 102, I'm mainly into vocals and acoustic guitar recording. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance.
Would you say this sounds the same as a 57, or does it have a very different "character" to the sound? (I can't say myself, because I've only owned "low-budget" clones.) BTW I can hear a some Brian May influence in your guitar playing. I'm surprised you didn't whip out that tasty Red Special for this.

Great stuff!
Thanks ever so much!
I am really excited to try the lewitt mics out, they sound great Evey time you use one, and the reviews all over the internet are fantastic.
Great musicians in the band , I like how they all wore jeans & matching shirts.
A bit like the RAMONES , only the PLAPONES 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Haha thanks ever so much! Yes, it must be the uniform!
Comparison with sm57 would be nice
Definitely! That's something we will do in a future video!
Sounds excellent! To my ears it is somewhere between an sm57 and an Audix i5. Thanks for everything you do, Warren. Cheers.
Hi Sean, that's a great comparison!
Sounds like a real competitor! Thanks for the demo!
Thanks ever so much Quincy!

Incredible sounding think this might blow the SM 57 away
I agree : )
That's wonderful to hear Clint!
Wonderful Sheila!

Hi Dave, great! That's fantastic to hear! Let me know how you get on my friend!
I use the Audio Tehnica Pro 63 as an alternative to my 57’s. They are fantastic!

Haha yes Mic 'Pouch' you got it!
Is that the same thing as a "prison pocket"
not too shabby!...looks like it deserves a listen live!

Can this make my guitar playing sound better ?😂😂 nice demonstration for 99.00$$ very cool😎

When building out your studio, how did you approach cable management going to/from your equipment and what were some mistakes you made in the beginning you wish you had known before?
Would you suggest this mic for something a little heavier like drums or electric guitar, or something like vocals/piano?

just out of curiosity, where was the mic placed in relation to amp?
This MTP 440 DM seems to work really well, I own an SM57 and would be nice to give this Lewitt mic a chance
I’d love to see this shot out against the 57 and v7x. V7x kills the 57 for me. Sounds incredible.
The casing looks a lot like an Audix I5... which I loooove on snare :-)
Good to hear you playing again. Sounds Wonderful. So cloning is legal in California?
Todd Glosser haha apparently so!!
Amazing song and mic Warren !
Hi Warren, thanks for review, awesome tune and great playing, the mic sounds sweet, all the best, Darren Ross.
