i have used shure 57's for at least 25 years, about 3 year ago i switched to a sennheiser 609 (mostly cause its easier to drop over the amp) and it sounds just as good, however, in this test the Lewitt stood out way more, i liked mic 1, right off the bat, and when you switched to mic 2, i knew it was a 57, which i really thought with the way RUclips compresses everything, i really wouldnt tell a differance, BUT the differeance is night and day,, WAY TO GO LEWITT,, since i play a Tele,, this low/mid push, would be really nice,,, great demo, CHEERS
For the love of God....to really make it the ultimate shootout, include: SE Electronics - V7x Telefunken - M80 Heil - PR20 *PR30 is really the mic everyone says is the way to go over the PR20, which may as well consider since the M80 is also in the same price range as the PR30. Also please include High-Gain distorted guitars, and Snare Top. Soloed and in the context of a mix.. Cheers.
I've used many microphones, but the first time I tried the Lewitt MTP 440 DM, I was genuinely surprised. I never expected a sub $100 microphone to sound as neutral as the 440 DM. It's probably the most neutral sounding dynamic microphone under $100. Long story in short, I liked the Lewitt in this comparison. I've never been a fan of the pronounced presence on the Shure SM57.
I love both mic sounds! But they’re definitely for different use cases... the sm57 is more scooped and the lewitt is warmer and rounded off which is cool too. It really just depends on what you’re using them for
#1 took it for me. I use a SM57 - a lot, because I know what it does, and can place it and EQ it reliably. This Lewitt is a sweet bit of kit - I love dynamic microphones, this one works. Very useful comparison!
It's always hard to pick one individual microphone in an instance like this because they both have flavors that could work by themselves if needed. When I heard the 2nd mic, I knew it was a 57 because it just has that presence, but also that presence clarifies the low midrange quite a bit because those mid frequencies are less prominent. When I heard the first mic again, it sounded too rowdy in the lower midrange and the upper mid prominence was at a lower frequency, so the guitar loses some of that "stringiness" you would hear in the room that the 57 is so great at picking up on guitar cabinets in exchange for a more midrange capture of the Lewitt. Overall, both mics sound great, but the SM57 just sounds "right" when I compare it to the Lewitt.
everytime the brighter sound came in.. i said this is the lewiit one... just stop we know it.. but SHIIIITT i can't believe that the lewitt has a warmer sound than the sm57
Don't you think that mic 2 was closer to the dust cap and 1 was more on the cone? That would explain the large variance. Placement is very important to the tone
lewitt is slightly more dull and dead. sm is brighter and more alive. there are better alternatives to sm57 and some are even better than lewitt and sm57 like audio technica mb2k and its 2x cheaper. that mic is a sleeper underrated choice and once will ppl find out, the mic will go up in price. i swear guys. if you have spare money, try audio technica mb2k. its slightly louder, wider but its not as dull as lewitt and its almost perfect when recording distortion.
Yes it’s a custom made anodised guard made by this guy in South Australia: instagram.com/h_e_r_a_d I love that wide range humbucker in the bridge…it works really well with the JM neck pickup…here is a full video I did about that guitar: ruclips.net/video/p_c74FAOu38/видео.html
People saying one mic blew the other out of the water miss the point of mics. They are very different and for different uses. If I'm going for a tone with a lot of bite the lewitt won't cut it and it won't punch through the mix. While the sm57 can be very harsh on already harsher sources. Each mix has its use. Personzlly' I find the lewitt very boxy. So the blend of 100 sm57 50 lewitt hit the sweet spot for me.
Absolutely...it all depends on what you need for a particular sound or even song...which makes have multiple mics on a cabinet so good...you can blend them in the way that works best for the track!
4:02 - Lewitt
4:20 - Shure
5:42 - Blend: 100% Lewitt + 50% Shure
6:23 - Blend: 100% Shure + 50% Lewitt
Thanks Daniel!!
Great video! Many thanks, it made our day! It is obvious which one we like better ;)

You guys should do a a shootout between:
Audix i5
Shure SM57
Lewitt MTP440
Sennheiser e906
For the love of God....to really make it the ultimate shootout, include:
SE Electronics - V7x
Telefunken - M80
Heil - PR20

We are huge fans of Lewitt...AMAZING mics for the price!!
I was hoping to like the Lewitt as a competitor to the SM57 (which I do have) but this one didn't carry the raw sound as well as I hoped.
I love both mic sounds! But they’re definitely for different use cases... the sm57 is more scooped and the lewitt is warmer and rounded off which is cool too. It really just depends on what you’re using them for
The second one is clearer, so I think that I prefer it. The first one is good too, though. The real winner it’s: both at the same time!
Would be great to se a comparison with the E906 as well
2 sounded harsh. 1 sounded weak like a 57 does sometimes. 1 was more pleasant. For the first riff.
#1 took it for me. I use a SM57 - a lot, because I know what it does, and can place it and EQ it reliably.
This Lewitt is a sweet bit of kit - I love dynamic microphones, this one works. Very useful comparison!
Thanks Oren...the two mics actually really complement each other...we've been using both for all of our videos since then!!
2 seems brighter but both sound better than any lift I’ve been in 👍🏽
I always prefer multiple mic’s to blend for the best tone 😀

Mic 1 is a bit warmer in the mids, happy feels. Mic 2 is clearer, more articulate. Definitely depends on what the mix needs.
mic1 is the lewitt... the SM is brighter from memory.... i like the Lewitt.
The Lewitt 440 smokes the 57. Love that mic.
i prefer lewitt
i do have a 57
everytime the brighter sound came in.. i said this is the lewiit one... just stop we know it..
but SHIIIITT i can't believe that the lewitt has a warmer sound than the sm57
Mic #1 was my favorite which I'm happy about as I was planning on buying one to use as a snare mic.
I prefer the last alternative. 50 % of mic A and 100 % of mic B.
1 was a bit fuller. #2 sounded thin. But they were both similar and sounded good.
The blends were superb.
They work well together.
They sure do...we've been using both in all of our videos since we filmed this comparison
Cool I just bought a 440 when I found out my 57 was a fake.
Don't you think that mic 2 was closer to the dust cap and 1 was more on the cone? That would explain the large variance. Placement is very important to the tone
The lewitt just has so much more body . I would have bet the farm Lewitt was number 2. I prefer the Lewitt

mic #1 sounds fuller. btw, what's the pickguard of your guitar ? is it custom made ? I'm planning to switch my jazzmaster too in that configuration.

Wow... I thought it was the reverse, I definitely prefer the Lewitt.
I like #1 a little better and think it’s the lewitt and #2 is the shure
Prefer 1. Warmer and fuller. 2 sounded brittle compared. Hope 1 is Lewitt?
#1 sounded warmer, #2 sounded more articulate. So...Shure then Lewitt?
EDIT: nope, I was wrong.
wow that's a really big difference, Lewitt sounded much nicer
Solo I prefer the MTP440, but I think in a mix I'd want more 57. The blend was really nice, and that is probably the best option.
I thought it was the opposite. I first thought "well, this 57 is definitely muddy". In fact it has now a friend muddier than him...
People saying one mic blew the other out of the water miss the point of mics.

Can you also shoot out the mtp440 and the 550 as amp mics?
That can be done
Good stuff
Slightly modified incubus riff.
Yep…KILLER album!!
What is the mic pre impedance ?
easy on the sharpness.
Lost my time
Did you find it yet?
