  • Everyone in the family can have their own code, you can remote unlock the door, and you can even lock it by saying "Alexa, lock front door"! Tech expert and homeowner Dave Taylor installs, programs, and demonstrates the slick KWIKSET HALO Touchscreen Wi-Fi Enabled Smart Lock and finds it a great addition to his home. There are a few quirks to know, but it's a remarkably powerful and flexible solution with no hub needed and no subscription fees!

    You mention that the batteries “should” last a year. This is NOT true. Put one of these on a second home in Sept. had to change the batteries in December after about 30-40 uses. Then 2 weeks later had to replace again. All batteries were new and good. Called Kwikset and they are saying unit has to be within line of sight and no more than 20 feet from router. These statements and info are no where in the documentation, video or website. I would pass on this especially if this is on a home not regularly used.

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  Год назад

      You are correct. 2 weeks is weirdly low for the batteries, but I am seeing 3-4 months per battery set, not the year they indicated in the specs. Hard to ascertain this without having it installed for a year, however!

    Hello, good video. I have this lock set I picked up from a "bin liquidator" in Norfolk, Virginia, for, get this, $8. It was a return from (amazon??) as this is what they sell, returned items. The tiny screws were gone, they are 4mm (I think, it has been awhile: got an assortment of screws in a kit). Anyway, It will be a great lock, once Kwickset responds to me email about un-registering it from the original owner. The APP stops me from completing by informing me of this. I should just call them tomorrow. The re-key is REAL easy to do, and you didn't cover it in the video, so, here goes. Have the current active key in the lock. Turn it clockwise 90 degrees. Insert the rekey tool, remove the tool and the key, insert the "new" key and rotate the key 180 degrees counterclockwise. Then rotate it 90 degrees clockwise to the regular "up" or "remove key" position. DONE. The kit can be purchased at Lowe's, has the tool and several "new" keys. About $15 January 2024. Wish me lock on the re-register.....

    • @AskDaveTaylor
      @AskDaveTaylor  7 месяцев назад

      Yeah, I figured the re-key wasn't key to most use cases so omitted it. That's a crazy good price, please do come back and let us know if you ever get the info from Kwikset on how to re-register it, though! 🙂

      After a few weeks of use, I found the software to be pretty poor, actually. I've learned that if you "drag" the screen down to force an update, that often will reconnect and give you the proper data. If you leave, going from Bluetooth range to wifi range, you might need to quit and relaunch the app. A hassle, but doable.

    Don’t buy this. It’s sounds good, but probably won’t connect to your router and you can’t ever get it to connect. You need some bullcrap wifi extender to to get it to use 2.4 ghz. If you can get it to work great, otherwise it’s good you can make your old key work, because it’s just a fancy do nothing keypad that you use a key for.

    • @kruxs4209
      @kruxs4209 10 месяцев назад

      Lollll it probably won’t connect your router. You actually think that you got a punch the password into it all you do is download the app and get on your Wi-Fi on your phone and that is literally it the Internet automatically does its own install just by connecting to your app while being on your network, the only thing you need the Internet for anyways it is for when you’re not at home so you can open and close your door wirelessly other than that if you’re anywhere near your house, Bluetooth will work on its own these things are awesome not only to mention that if you have Alexa anything that is Alexa will also be considered a Wi-Fi extender, so technically your Wi-Fi doesn’t really matter because Alexa is the one that is going to be the one connecting to it wirelessly while you’re not around as well as Google unless you have the Apple versions in which your Apple TV or your iPad or your computer will do the same these things are the best thing that I’ve ever had. I love being able to just have my door locked behind me in 30 seconds and I love being able to, turn that off and have my door lock on its own at 9 o’clock at night. Automatically I love being able to have people living at my house have their own passwords that way I know who’s coming and going and I love having it be able to have temporary passwords like for hospice user people to come over or if you have construction workers if you have your ring camera, it’s even better to let people in and out of your house, if needed also, you can’t ever lock yourself out of your own house ever not to mention that you’ll never have to rekey your home ever again because these are lifetime warranty I mean if you don’t even like the color they’ll send you another one free plus you can use any key that you already have in your pocket and re-key it to that key these are even better if you’re a homeowner that rents out your houses, you’ll never have to buy new locks on any of your homes again simply put because you can re-key the lock and even if you lose all the keys Kwikset will send you a new lock cylinder in three days with brand new keys if you’re too lazy, just pull the lock out yourself and push the pins in but who wouldn’t want these once you owe one they send you them again no matter what happens for free imagine never happened to buy another door knob, or lock again in your life and being able to have any color you want at any given time not to mention that when you buy these, these things come with 75 different kinds of parts and locks and latches there’s not a single door in the world that can’t be installed with the parts that are already in the boxthey literally give you everything you could possibly need for any door ever made including Duracell batteries
