- First test of the Harbor Freight Predator 13,000 Tri-Fuel Generator to power my home. In this video, I go through setting it up for the 1st time, connecting the propane, verifying lights and furnace are all good. I'll show you how easy it is once you have a Generator Interlock kit installed to power the entire house. Perfect generator for emergency power or off-grid use!
As always leave your comments below and thanks for watching!
Making this purchase next week. The tri fuel is such a big selling point. I get natural gas at home so it will be nice to run it on the main and not have to worry about gas cans or propane tanks. Thanks for your video
Definitely has a ton of features for the price. I have natural gas here as well but unfortunately it’s on the other side of my house from my electrical panel so not as easy to extend. Definitely the way to go though if you can. Appreciate the comment!
Really like you rolling attachment pallet. Have you considered putting the forms inside the pallet and leaving the top for other attachments? It may work if it's not too heavy in the back.
Great idea for sure! would be very nice not having to move both attachments every time. I’m definitely putting that on my to do list. Thanks!
Same generator I've been thinking about getting. Wonder if they have a remote start option, or they should, it would be convenient.
Yep they are loud, but more importantly they get the job done.
I'd run mine on propane, I'd have to figure out how to hook it up to my 325 gallon propane tank, I'd probably have to ask the propane company and have them add the connection most likely.
I didn’t mention it in the video but yes it has a remote fob as well. Only issue I’ve read is the receiver for the remote shuts down after 12 hrs of non use to save the battery. Then you have to use the push button on the generator again to start it. I’m sure if your propane company doesn’t have a solution a local plumber could help you out. Would be nice to have such a large tank already available that’s for sure.
@@journeys-with-joe That auto shut of wouldn't necessarily be an issue really at least not at first...not much to just go outside and hit the button, but it would be nice if a person were using it with an RV maybe if they didn't wanna walk outside and hit the start/stop button LOL.
My propane tank is a rental unit, so anything put on it would have to be authorized and done by the propane company I believe, I'd have to double check with them or see what they would recommend, or even a 2nd tank dedicated to the generator as a worse case scenario...or just a larger tank and have a T installed by the propane company....they seem very helpful with stuff so I doubt it'll be an issue when I do get a generator.
Nice!
Appreciate you checking out the video!
Get a 100lb tank of you plan on using it for any amount of time as those little 20lb tanks will freeze up pretty quick. Unless you have a 250+ gallon tank outside. That's a loud ol' beast. Also, if you have a power inlet, etc, you need to make the generator floating neutral as it only needs one point which is your house. Bonded neutral is used if you're using it "free standing" for tools, etc.
I definitely need to look into a larger tank. I ran it a few hours and didn’t have any issues this time but want a larger capacity anyways for emergencies. Would love to have a large quiet inverter generator but for my limited use the cost doesn’t justify it. Awesome tip for the floating neutral! I’m going to pull the cover off and make that change since this will be used only for my house backup.
@@journeys-with-joe It is SUPER easy on those and many others like it. Pull the back cover off on the end OPPOSITE of the pull start (where the stator is). Remove the cover and behind there you will see a short yellow wire with a green stripe that connects from one post to another. You can remove it entirely OR you can just undo the side where it's connected to the two white wires then (so only the two white remain) and just screw both ends down where the other side is as it's ground anyway. That way you always know where the wire is. Then you are set and only have one point of neutral bonding at your house.
@@avguytx4361thanks for the detailed info on this! Sounds like it will be quick and easy. Might even make a video when I do it.
@@journeys-with-joe Super simple for sure. And video it while you're at it!
How are you addressing the neutral ground bond in your generator? Your house is neutral ground bonded already.
Have you had any issues with electronics and the quality of the power? Any messed up electronics or motherboards on washers, dryers, televisions?
I have the 7000 continuous watt predator generator. I have run the tv and desktop computer along with everything else in the house with no problems with the electronics. The electronics are always connected to a surge protector because even power company power can have a surge that damage electronic circuits.
No issues yet. I do have a few ups power strips which regulate the power if it dips too low. I’ll definitely do an update video if things change though.
You should not start the generator under load. Don't turn the breaker connected to the generator on until after the generator is started and up to speed. Turn the breaker off before stopping the generator. When voltage is low IE when the generator is not running at full speed, it causes anything connected to draw more current to compensate for the low voltage. This is hard on the generator and what ever is connected to the generator.
Good point I’ll keep this in mind next time I connect it up. Appreciate you checking out the video!
Would there be a problem that you have a 50amp breaker and the generator requires a 42amp Max?
If they made a 45amp breaker that would be better I guess. Since there is a breaker in the generator too if it exceeds the 42amps it will trip before the house breaker so still protected. I appreciate the comment!
Looks great, is there a backup of the battery is dead on the generator? That’s my only concern with the electric starts.
Good catch! Yes I should have mentioned it but it does have a pull start. I do need to test that since it has an automatic as well as manual choke. They really put alot of features on this generator and I’m thinking about just doing a video on all of them.
@@journeys-with-joe Pull starting can be a challenge with those bigger engines. I had a Honda EU6500 and pulling the rope would just drag the generator sideways. Your best defense against a dead battery is to keep a boost box on hand - like you would use to start a car. Works wonders! Be sure to get one hat can output power even if no battery is connected. I have a JNC660 which is basically just a battery in a box. I once had my generator battery die when it was 0F and we had a power failure. I clamped on my boost box and it fired right up.
@@eosjoe565great tip on the jump box. I do need to get one of those. I haven’t tried the pull start yet but have had larger ATV’s and as long as the compression release was working you’d be ok but about break your hand if not.
