I was only 7 when we made the GF for the second time, and you know the boys wanted this one after the heartbreak in '91 against the Hawks. I was surprised with tickets to the game by my mum, which for a kid of 7, was like my birthday, Easter and Christmas coming all on the same day, loved every minute of the day, the noise was deafening, the atmosphere was electric, and the party afterwards. Since then we've won 2 more, I really hope there are many more to come. GO YOU EAGLES!!

I don’t know about being a minority sport in NSW and QLD, have u checked out Sydney and Brisbane fan base ? Rugby is the biggest sport in those two states ! Soccer is really big in very poor countries as you don’t need much equipment or space ! It will definitely grow as Australia has a huge ethnic population! But not to the heights you envisage ! To each his own is the saying and I for one will always be an AFL fan , it’s our game !Who knows what 2050 will bring ? I would say cricket has a lot of followers as well ! America has NFL and Baseball and Canada has ice hockey and those sports will always be huge there !

In my humble opinion....At 1:48, when Chris Mainwaring gets the ball and plays on , until the goal is scored, is the best passage of controlled good play, ever...Chris Lewis rules too, but Sumich's flip to Matera, is the best ploy ever. No one was ready, no one was even watching.

Tony Evan’s most underrated player in that game. Materia was a god in the game but Evan’s saved the eagles 3 times when the eagles hadn’t found there momentum yet, he in my opinion is the MVP on this day.

A quirk of the final six system in 1992 saw West Coast, by virtue of Collingwood losing to St Kilda, progress to the second-semi final against Geelong, instead of the first-semi final against Footscray. Had Collingwood won their week-one match, the Grand Final match up would likely still have been the same (West Coast & Geelong were clearly the best two teams of 1992), but Geelong would have been the team coming off a week's rest. It might have made a difference after half time in this game.

Ablett deliberately elbows Pike in the jaw right at the start of the game [good slow-mo replay @15:05].
Loved Gary Ablett Sr, my favourite ever player. But JESUS he was a sniper. He could fill a highlights reel with his low acts. Raised elbow man-on-man work was his specialty. That's as bad as it gets, Magro on Jesaulenko is the only one I can think of that's worse. Can't believe it hasn't become known as "the infamous" hit on Don Pyke. There was no post-match outrage, I can't even remember it being dwelt on much at all.

The Geelong teams of this era had plenty of stars (Ablett, Hocking, Couch, Hinkley, Stoneham, etc.) but not enough depth. Typically the last 6-8 players picked would be journeymen at best, and not up to the heat of a grand final. West Coast had a few quiet players on the day too - but everyone made a contribution at some point. That - and Matera - proved the difference.

    • @hanajinks1044

l went to Windy Hill with my Bomber mate late in the 88 Season. Cats were unfavoured and won by ten goals, winning me a healthy bet in the process as l knew what was coming with guys like Ablett, Stoneham, Couchy etc. l put loads more bets on pre-89 including one of "Making the GF" That Hawks side has to be best ever so to push them to kick, and as Dawson above said, with basically half a side...
Not sure that Eagles were quite ready in 91 to beat Hawthorn, tho in saying that,...if Sumich kicks that goal at Waverley against Collingwood....hmmm. Cats just never quite had enough to beat Eagles....just so unlucky to run into yet another all-time Great Side. 93 was really the season that got away for Cats....we thrashed ALL of the other finalists over the last six weeks of the season but lost too many games earlier to even make the finals....we'd have won the Flag easily in 93, l have no doubt.

@@hanajinks1044 and to think in 1993 we only finished one and a half games from top spot, yet still finished seventh and missed the final six - and just the following year they changed it to a final eight! If only Malcolm Blight did not try and go defensive in the first half of ‘93 and let the cats play their true game style like they did in the back half, 1993 could have been the year. Gary Ablett could have kicked 10 in the grand final that year, ah - what might have been…

I hadn't realized we'd finished so close to Top and had to go and have another look at the season...
I went to the Rd 3 game against Nth at KP full of confidence and Carey played the whole game down at the Wind end and heat us of his own boot. Just a Colossus. I went to the Rd 6 game where Gazza kicked 14 in a losing side and also the Rd 9 game at KP when Eagles overcame a three-quarter time deficit to out-tough us. Just not quite there,...in all three games. Blew them all away late in the season tho...typical Geelong. I vaguely remember knowing that if we'd thrashed the Eagles in Perth in the last round then we'd get in and then just hoping for the Four Points once it was clear it'd be close.

Great performance by the west coast eagles. They were basically the west Australian state of origin team minus a few players. Still they had to win in Melbourne and they did. Too many passengers for Geelong. The Geelond sides 2007 and onwards were made of sterner stuff even if they maybe didn't have the individual brilliance of the early 90s side.

+hardtobeat84 Absolute rubbish. The Eagles didn't get concessions... they were actually given restrictions. Ability to only draft players from WA in their first season and that was after the VFL raped the WAFL of 19 players in 4 weeks before the Eagles were allowed to touch them... so the Eagles were left with the dregs. The Eagles were the only AFL team to only have a list of 35 when the rest of the competition had 52. Had to play their home finals they'd earned... in Melbourne in the early years... and had to fight to get home finals played at Subiaco.
The reason the Eagles were successful is because AFL teams had not taken recruiting seriously in the early 90s. They paid literally NO attention to scouting young players... and as a result the Eagles were able to pick up players that other AFL clubs ignored. Peter Matera was drafted at #4... behind 3 guys that barely played a game in the AFL in their careers.

West Coast were better on the day, but Geelong had their chances too:
27:30 Riccardi hits the post, would have ben 24-5
28:45 Hocking misses from 20 metres, would have been 25-5
48:00 Brownless misses from a tight angle, would have been 47-18
1:23:15 Ablett doesn't spot Stoneham free inside 50, a goal makes it 68-45
1:53:30 Bairstow on target but touched on the line, would have cut the margin to 11 points
The Geelong teams of 2007-2011 would have taken these critical chances. Just saying.

+Great White7 Gary Ablett Sr was an absolute genius. He was hard, freakish, could kick a ball 50m either side of his body, punch a torp 60m into the breeze on the run (and it is rumoured he did this on the left, but I never saw that), leap higher than any ruckman of any era, outmuscle the strongest full backs and take one-arm speccies, run into a congested pack and come out with the ball, deliver a bump so hard that it could puncture the lungs of bearded giants, outsprint (in the 1980s at least) 90% of the competition, snap a goal from over his shoulder (again either side) from any pocket.... what else, need I go on? There is evidence of all of this.... look at the highlights. The guy simply was the most talented player going around, he was a footballing superman! This does not mean he was the best full forward, or the best wing, or the greatest half forward.... he transcended positions to a great extent and that in itself is his greatest attribute. To argue that any other player had these abilities is fruitless. I haven't seen 150 years of football, so sure I don't know, and yes there are better players in individual aspects.... but simply put: Ablett Sr was the package. Add to this, he played in a fairly tough era where umpire intervention was minimal - eg. defenders were allowed to scrag and chop - and you may come to an appreciation of the guy's abilities. If you really want to compare him to modern day stars, well then there is no comparison. Franklin can't take a pack mark nor use the other side of his body and to tell the truth doesn't put his head over it that much, Riewoldt has no distance on his kicks and just doesn't have awareness, Brown is bloody good at his best but again although having the courage and Careyesque stature, the freakish side of his game is not there. Pavlich at the very top of his game can do some pretty special things, and is actually quite similar to Ablett Sr as a package - it's just that he is about 80% of that full package! Comparing to stars of yesteryear, Mr Football was a tough as guts CHB but rarely went elsewhere, Leigh Matthews was just round ball tough, but certainly didn't have the skills of Ablett Sr (although he more than made up for it with his tenacity), Coleman didn't play the game long enough. I won't go on too long.... never really saw these players anyways. Ablett Sr without a doubt is the most talented footballer, certainly that I have seen. Again, he just had the whole package, abilities in every conceivable area. It does not mean he was the most valuable player to a team, but Captain Farking Obvious would have to agree that there has not been another player since who consistently displays these all-round abilities.

This was Geelong's best (and only legitimate) chance to snare a flag in this era, but unfortunately the Eagles were just too good.

Its a very strange system the 2nd Final 6. West Coast and Geelong became the "highest ranked winning teams" as Collingwood was knocked out. Im a Crows supporter and in 93 we finished 5th, and West Coast 6th. Because we knocked out 3rd and 4th Adelaide became the second highest ranked winning team and played off for a Grand Final spot in the 2nd Semi Final! (we were technically ranked above Essendon who finished 1st)

Got to love the bias of Victorian commentators,( except for the legend Dennis Commetti). Ablett and numerous other Geelong players elbow west coast players in the head, they say nothing. Wilson fair front on hip and shoulder, commentators say he needs to stop carrying on with silly stuff. Lol worst thing hasn't changed much in 32 years. Up the eagles, we will be champs again.
