Geelong had no business making this grand final. They'd been brave in three finals leading up to this, and had spent all their petrol tickets. Probably no one would have beaten this West Coast team in 1994, but you'd have to think North Melbourne, having played one fewer game and with Carey at the peak of his powers, would have given a better contest.
Perhaps an Eagles v North Melbourne match would have provided a better contest - but the cats were actually in this game until the last quarter - the 80 point blowout that eventuated in the end only occurred when the eagles piled on the goals in the final term. The cats were actually more competitive in this match than they were the next year, when they ‘only’ lost by 61 points. Geelong played some really good football in the first quarter and perhaps with a bit of luck could have been further than 1 point in front at quarter time. The cats should have been 7 points clear a minute into the second quarter, but Leigh Tudor’s attempt bounced the wrong side of the post. Geelong also should have been back in front halfway through the second quarter - Brownless marked on his chest, seconds later Macintosh shoved him to the ground but no 50 was paid (sumich got 2 similar 50 meter penalties paid to him in the 1991 GF). Hocking injuring his thigh (yet remaining on the ground) was further bad luck to the Cats. Geelong did do very well to make this GF - and they probably already played their Grand Final against north in the prelim - but they deserved to be there, and if a few things had have gone their way in the first half (and if they had have been able to train in Kardinia park in the lead up to this GF instead of the nearby st Mary’s oval) - they may have pulled off what would have been a deserving upset. But there is no doubt the eagles were the best team of 1994.
I was a 9 year old Eagles supporter when this game was played, so this is the 106th time I've watched this game (naturally). Kemp and Heady were unbelievable this game. And Barnes chopped in the ruck for Geelong. Unfortunately for them, our midfielders had the answers. This is the only winning GF we've had where our supporters knew the result by 3/4 time. Even as a 9 year old, I knew it was in the bag. This will sound ungrateful, but I wish we had another one like this. Cos waiting til the last second of the game for a flag sends a young man grey
It was after this match that Malcolm Blight stood down as Geelong coach after 3 GF losses. He then said one of the funniest things I have heard in footy when he referred to himself as the " pizza coach" . One small loss (6pts -89), one medium (28pts-92) and one large (80 pts) !!!
@J G soccer is the worst sport and is hated in ALL Australian states. USA, Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Ireland, Cuba all hate soccer. You must feel really threatened by footy to copy and paste this crap. Loser
Geelong were always an entertaining team to watch through the late 80s & 90s. They just lacked some quality players mainly in defense to go all the way. To win GFs you have to have a solid back six.
Geez...the Cats of 1994 had a serious hairline issue. Hehehehehe! Just joking. The Cats really didn't take advantage during a period when they were one of the most damaging and dangerous scoring teams in the comp. Blight, at least in this GF, didnt seem to have his players 'go the man' instead of the ball in the first qtr. That was their downfall in the other GFs Blight coached. Ayers returned to that tactic against the Blues the in the 1995 GF and they were thumped.
One improvement in Grand Finals is not having constant planes flying overhead anymore. This match sounds like it was played at a fucking Airforce base with the constant aircraft movement overhead, even hard to hear the commentary at times! I once asked Bill Brownless about the four grand finals they lost, he said 89 (got going too late), 92 (were good enough but let ourselves down with sloppy mistakes), the latter two in 94 & 95 (we weren't good enough to win either of them).

Carlton would've gone toe to toe with the Eagles had they not shat the bed and gone out in straight sets

@Jayden Loader I'd be more concerned about yours. Why do you always search for every single comment I make and reply to it?
@@mabiorcholappreciationpage I was certainly glad when Carlton got knocked out as a WCE fan.
Well said mate. 100% agree

Amazing anecdote
19:40 okie dokie...
Last match for Bairstow, Steve Hocking, Wills and Malcolm Blight for Geelong anyway. The former two retired after.
