    Ben Hart's 1st quarter in this GF was immense and sadly overlooked - he involves himself in about 10 contests deep in North Melbourne's forward line and either nullifies the danger or wins the ball himself time and again, if you watch closely.

    Sadly, this was the only footy we had in the USA at the time, after having a 1-hour highlights show on a 2-week delay in 1994-1997. We got almost every round of the 1997 season, and did NOT get the Grand Final. This year, we got only the Grand Final. It was the beginning of a brutal period of fighting for footy coverage in the US. However, it did bring us AFANA, as well as the beginnings of the USAFL.
    That said, the second half saw Jarman go to work. It was weird seeing Ricciuto in the forward half when he was better at CHB. McKernan and Capuano had no answer to Shaun Rehn, and was that really two hands into the back of Micky Martin's head?

    Interesting observation with the start of the second quarter. I will stand corrected, but, isn't it the bouncing of the ball on the ground, in the centre circle, that starts the quarter? Why was it then that 3 seconds had elapsed when the ball was bounced? Edit: Noticed that the last quarter was 7 seconds in when the ball was bounced.

      You are correct in terms of the 2024 Laws of Australian Football (law 10.4), but in 1998 it was as Kane said. I don't have access to the rules in 1998, but in 2008 there was still no special law for the start of a quarter. Law 10.5.3 said,
      "A field Umpire shall signal to the Timekeeper to stop the clock or re-start the clock used for the timing of the Match by blowing a whistle and raising one arm above his or her head."

    I honestly do not understand how more than half of the physical interactions on a football fiekd onvolving Glenn Archer weren't calked as free kocks against him. He was so quick to grab a kumper, lock am arm, throw an elbow in your face.....he was such a turd. And somehow that kind shite was thought highly of back tyen. You jever saw Jason Dunstall, Peter Curran, Robbie Flower etc usimg those weak tactics. No. Theu played fotball. Not thugball as Archer did. No I follow Hawthorn amd we had our share of thugs....but ours could at least play football too. Archer only had one gear. If you call him I believe he'll sell you some.

    • @brianvogt8125
      @brianvogt8125 3 месяца назад

      I didn't notice that while watching live on TV, but can understand a player's mentality. It's the last game of the season, and there is no send-off rule. The worst penalty could be suspension at the start of the following season. That's a bargain! The AFL was getting tough by 2004, issuing combinations of fines with suspensions. Alastair Lynch got the largest one: 10 weeks + $15,000 - although he'd already announced his retirement, so it was only $15K.
      You are correct about Jason Dunstall et al being at the highest end of sportsmanship. They provided better value to their teams by using their supreme skills than by using dirty tactics.
