My dad had this revolver that he got from my uncle who was a Dallas police officer for over 30 years and it was his service revolver. I used to shoot it starting at 7 years old. When I would shoot it, it would be loaded with .38 special rounds which I believe was what it was chambered in, but it may have actually been a .357. It was a great shooting gun. I sure miss that pistol.

@RB-wt6pg No. Smith and Wesson had hammer block safety bars in their triggers long before they went to frame mounted firing pins. I believe they first introduced them in 1908, so you would have to have a very old Smith to find one without it. In any case, they are visible in the hammer channel and easy to check for.

One of the revolvers - which cause me to lust - I found at the local gun show a couple years ago. I had wanted one for years.
It started life (between '69 and '77) as a S&W M25-2. It is only a .45 ACP chambered revolver. I think it was possibly a cop's gun as it was altered as I - when a lawman - desired.
The barrel was cut back to four inches (made as a six inch barrel revolver) and the front sight remounted on the barrel very nicely. (Looks like a factory revolver.) Making a longer story short, I use only .45 Auto Rim cases for it, a 255 lead Semi-Wadcutter bullet at about 780 fps. Delightful revolver.

I'm a Ruger fan but I own a 625 in 45acp with a 4" barrel. I just love it, fun to shoot, very accurate, cheap to shoot with 230 hand cast and 6.0gr of Unique. Even at today's prices that's less than $0.10/round. I can run through 100 rounds for less than the cost of a sandwich for lunch and it's a handful of steel with respectable recoil just for fun. Popping old beer cans at 25 yards is no problem but that square cut front sight is nasty. Catches on everything and almost invisible, needs a red ramped or fiber optic front sight and it would be perfect.

I own a Smith 625-9, four inch barrel, all stainless, Mountain Gun, chambered in .45 Colt. It is a real jewel: accurate, reliable, durable, potent and great fun to shoot. Often, it is my woods walking sidearm, when I’m in bear and cougar country. As an N Frame, it’s large and heavy, but I sometimes carry it concealed under a couple layers of Winter clothing; okay, that may seem crazy, however, a 250 grain Gold Dot traveling at about 875 FPS will stop quadrupeds and bipods rather effectively.

It may have the same frame and cylinder size, but the cylinder walls at much thinner, especially at the bolt cuts. I believe it was originally chambered in .45 ACP with moon clips. One could load up the power on the Model 25 almost to the power of the 44 Magnum. One could refer to the .45 Auto Rim cartridge has the .45 Short Colt.

My dad had a pistol just like these back in the 70’s that he got from my uncle who was a Dallas police officer for more than 30 years, it was his service revolver that he carried as his service weapon. I can’t remember if it was a .357 or not, but when I would shoot it, it would be loaded with .38 special rounds, I want to say that it was chambered in .38 special. I wish that I had it now, I used to shoot it starting when I was 7 years old and loved that pistol.

My M25-5, serial number N8287xx has chamber throats that measure .456" diameter. Many years ago the NRA Rifleman ran a article on these guns and their oversize throats, stating that to get the best accuracy out of them to use cast bullets sized to fit the throat. I've owned this S&W for 30 plus years, and now that I've retired I'll finally getting around to trying this.

Nice guns. I have an 8-3/8" and 4" Model 25-5. I used the 8-3/8" model for handgun metallic silhouette shooting at one time. Yes, higher velocity cartridges have a flatter trajectory, but that makes no difference when you KNOW the range you are shooting at and the performance of your ammunition. The 250 gr. bullets took down ram targets much better than lighter weight bullets from .357 magnums and with less recoil than .44 Magnum. Since it was necessary to knock the targets off their base to score a "hit", lighter bullets that "rang" the steel without knocking them over were not desirable. Heavy recoil was not desirable because in a match you would be shooting a lot of rounds. A heavier, slower bullet in a heavy revolver worked great!
The 4" was, of course, much easier to carry, and was my companion on many hog hunts. At the time we were hunting wild hogs with dogs in thick Texas brush. Shots were always very close and often a handgun was the better choice than my shotgun with slugs.
The .45 Colt with 250 gr. cast, Keith type, SWC was excellent for wild hogs at close range. I made no attempt to make a .44 Magnum out of the cartridge.

Contrary to the .44 Mag and .357mag/.38spl that I know so much of, regarding their unique characteristics and quirks. 🤣.
Given the quirks of S&W Revolvers of the Past, it's funny how people view them as flawless works while the new-modern line of S&W Classic Revolvers is collectively viewed as junk. I can't stand it.

I know a lot of people prefer the walnut-and-blued aesthetic, but I prefer the black and stainless look. I really wish they had a 625 (stainless version) with a full length underlug, a 5, 6, or 6.5 inch barrel, and a good old Hogue overmolded grip. Even with the old-timey cartridge, I'd still be a sucker for a stainless and black version.
Of course, there are probably a dozen S&W revolvers that don't exist that I would like to see... oh well.

The 25-5 w/out the pinned barrel will have the correct chamber throat. The N prefix should have the correct throat. They stopped pinning the barrel around the same time they fixed the throat size. The 45 Colt in the schofield would not eject because of the diminutive rim (I believe early cylinders were just straight thru bored in those days, and so is the model 25 in 45 Colt) and the Army demanded the bigger rim in case that calvary outpost got the wrong ammo. At least that's the story I heard on someone's channel. For example you can drop a 454 Casull in your 25-5. A good thing to know and AVOID if you shoot both calibers.

John Wayne, in one of his later movies shot the "25 in .45 Colt". He even commented to one of the characters about the cartridge had been effective for seventy five years. I loved this video! I have wanted one of these for years, and seems like a lot of other shooters do too! The prices just keep on going up, up, up!
