- Dave Rawlings & Gillian Welch perform "Snowing on Raton" at WUTC 88.1 FM in Chattanooga, Tennessee during Richard Winham's afternoon music show. Recorded 12/18.15.
So grateful for these two. Such beauty.
This is the song that got me through my beloved husband dying. I just had to make it through another day. By morning I would be through those hills and gone. 2018 and still missing him.
A favorite song for a long time now. Thank you so much for sharing.
sorry for your loss, such songs do help us endure, life is full of tragedy that when written and orchestrated become poetic and magical, but one never forgets the hurt associated with the original loss, I have had a lifetime of it to draw poetry and song from. Hugs and Smiles
A little late but condolences to you and your family ❤
Great singer and beautiful woman Gillian Welch ❤
Her writing and singing, his playing = magical sorcery
These 2 have contributed so many songs that have become essential additions to the folk Americana catalog. A treasure.
These 2 are just Different Level ❤️ Absolutely Unquestionably THE REAL DEAL. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
good lord these two
Every time I hear these guys, the hair rises on the back of my head . This is just superb.
You need more beautiful people like these two in the world.
These two are amazing together.
"...and you cannot hold a lover that is gone."
Dave's playing on this is fantastic
There are no words for how much I love these two singing this song. This song gets into your soul.
Nope it suck’s
@@NoName-fo7mz nope, your ears suck.
Watching Gillian's face during the song, you see how she crafts each word, reaches highs, closes vowels. Real 1-woman singing workshop.
When the wind don't blow in Amarillo
And the moon along the Gunnison don't rise
Shall I cast my dreams upon your love, babe
And lie beneath the laughter of your eyes
It's snowin' on Raton
Come morning I'll be through them hills and gone
Bid the years good-bye you cannot still them
You cannot still the circles of the sun
You cannot count the miles until you feel them
And you cannot hold a lover that is gone
It's snowin' on Raton
Come morning I'll be through them hills and gone
Mother thinks the road is long and lonely
Little brother thinks the road is straight and fine
Little darling thinks the road is soft and lovely
I'm thankful that old road is a friend of mine
It's snowin' on Raton
Come morning I'll be through them hills and gone
Tomorrow the mountains will be sleeping
Silently the blanket green and blue
Oh that I would hear the silence they are keeping
I'll bring all their promises to you
It's snowin' on Raton
Come morning I'll be through them hills and gone
Gillian & David I only found you at the twilight of my life now at 76 but as a player and one that appreciates music in the true form you both have achieved the highest regards of the ones that are still traditional in there approach
With love and best wishes from your friends in Nova Scotia Canada Keep it up
donald wood - At 78, I’m coming on behind you, Donald. I just cannot understand how it is that I’ve only now found Gillian and David, because honestly I feel as though they’ve been a part of my musical heart and soul all my life.
Sounds like Heaven even when they're just tuning up. They can't help it.
Barroom girls floors me. I had same reaction as Townes when I first heard them in 1996 on NPR. I was so moved I wrote a fan letter right then. They responded with a letter on an old fashioned type writer.
Damn. How amazing would a TVZ cover album by these two be???
might be enough live performances to make it happen - I know their version of Pancho and Lefty is my favorite cover of that song
Now THAT’s a good idea!!!
"Tomorrow the mountains will be sleeping
Silent 'neath the blanket green and blue
O, but I hear the silence they are keeping
I'll bring all of their promises to you"
Can we just go ahead and place guitar God status on Dave. I mean seriously. So elegant.
His playing is incredibly emotional to me!!moves me to tears every time!!he palys as well as anyone i've ever heard!!
@@bigtom1001 I think it's because he always puts emotion first. I've never seen him show off.
He's an amazing guitarist, technically and especially musically. But what I find of particular interest in his beautiful playing is that he uses campanella scales - as far as I know, he's unique in doing such in folk world.
I'm a metal head, and a I agree 100%.
Yes
Great interview & performance. R.I.P. Townes Van Zandt.
Sheer beauty, with a generous helping of genius.
We all knew that there must have been some kind of torch-passing from Townes to these two, and this clip is a welcome confirmation. Their rendition of his song is a beautiful illustration of how music moves and grows through a culture that serves as a nutritional medium. Gillian Welch has proved to be a worthy inheritor of the embarrassment of riches that is American music. The interesting challenge, then, is who has got what it takes to learn from her?
Me
Me, too. ;)
That's a tall order .
They can pass the baton to Jason Isbell and Molly Tuttle
I feel like Mandolin Orange picked up a good deal from them. And there's no mistaking David's imprint on Kenneth Pattengale of the Milk Carton Kids
I can't tell you how many times I've been over Raton Pass, but this song brings back many memories.
This just cracked my heart open and let the light in 💜
Positively divine ... I love how Dave is getting a Mandolin sound from the high registers of the guitar!
I was in Nashville for several years tried once to put myself out there and saw right off it wasn’t the days of my distant cousin Loretta. Don’t think they like my haircut ha. I knew I had talent but oh well whatever wasn’t worth my time to bother with. God Bless any raw talent rolls into that town. They are known for not knowing talent.
im so glad i discovered them some years ago. so beautiful music and their voices: puuuh!!!! goosebumps everytime
This is a wonderful treasure !!!!
What legend Townes Van Zandt is! And these guys are right on his heels!
She's surpassed him by far
I love your conviction to historical accuracy. I love your conviction to truth. No narcissism here. Blessings always
Now imagine that I kept coming back to this session, to listen to my newly found musical heroes playing this beatiful song, and then finally decided to look up that gambler guy that were on about everytime before the got to actually play, and now i can't stop listen to Townes, thank you Gillian and Dave!
Great song, great version, couldn't you listen to these two all day. Thanks for all the toons Gillian and Dave!
absolutely love watching these two perform together. they compliment each other so well, both in harmonizing and guitar playing styles
Always a Gillian Welch fan, this is gorgeous
Love this song. Just found this version...so good!
Heart 2 Heart. Beautiful couple.
It doesn't get more real than this.
When I saw it was Gillian and Dave at my hometown radio station I had to listen! Write a memoir guys, you have some amazing stories!
One of my favorite Townes songs, from one of my favorite albums. Love this version!
I'm late arriving in the TVZ universe. Thankful to make this my introduction to another of his greats.
Beautiful as always.
I can't help but think of all the times I made that drive. Each time I have this songs pops in my head.
Wonderful memories, these two artist are such precious gems !
Beautiful music...thanks I needed that this morning!
So beautiful!
That was just gorgeous.....
A lovely version of this song. So good.
Back in the 70's I lived in Amarillo and traveled to Raton, special song to me.
Dave & Gillian ... thx for teaching me this song!!!!!
I'm melting away
Thanks for France: you have fans there!!!
Indeed!
Great interview...love these guys so much...listen to GW and DRM all the time...drove from Philadelphia to Charlottesville in April 2014 to see them at the Paramount and just saw DRM at Union Station Philly in November 2015...can't get enough of them.
Dave's linear movement is perfection
These 2 are the best
Discovered these guys a few weeks ago. I swear they could just hold their guitars and talk to each other and I would buy the album!!!
Love the DJ!
love this
Love tvz! Great job! 👏
Believe it or not ... this was the very first Townes songs I heard that I knew was Townes (I had heard others do his songs before). This rendition is simply beautiful and sad at the same time (and Dave's guitar playing is out-of-this-world).
Good Lord ya'll. You do amazing Neil but damn, that hits the soul. Townes is happy, im sure.
It’s so great
American Royalty.
The Lady dont kow every guitar loves her
when they tune it sounds a bit like cora tuning !
sweet and beautiful
they do this townes jewel justice!
Real honest music and people
Wonderful.
love this tune, ol' Townes and also version with Blaze helping him out, but sure enjoy this one too by Dave and Gillian, I think it funny the mention of the album Late and Great etc. as it was first Townes album I bought years ago lol A friend of mine, Carla Torgerson of The Walkabouts told be a few stories of touring with Townes back in mid 90s :)
Who in the hell disliked this
❤️
i love..
great
they are the best
I saw her 18 years ago in the seattle underground, and her and dave were GREAT. just her and dave and there two Guitars. but time sure goes by fast cause her grey hair is making her look older then she is.
Gillian lookin like she about about to go burglar someone's house.
Burgle
Yeah VERY strange for me. I honestly never heard these cats play until now but I’ve ALWAYS been a HUGE Townes fan.
She sounds like she's from Nashville too.
How I wish they were more prolific.
Can someone tell me the name of this song please? I can't quite make it out. Thanks 💽
4:16
She easily can does Joni Mitchell songs i guess
Elle joue sur une Martin et pas sa Gibson !!!!
It was beautiful and all but take your hat off inside pal.
These two are always in my playlist, but it's been a few years since I actually seen them....Gillian looks like hell....hope she isn't living as hard as Towns did as well.
What a rude comment.
All she is is ageing, as we all do.
Don't be rude she's a fine woman
When the wind don't blow in amarillo
And the moon along the gunnison don't rise
Shall I cast my dreams upon your love, babe
And lie beneath the laughter of your eyes
It's snowin' on raton
Come morning I'll be through them hills and gone
Mother thinks the road is long and lonely
Little brother thinks the road is straight and fine
Little darling thinks the road is soft and lovely
I'm thankful that old road is a friend of mine
Bid the years good-bye you cannot still them
You cannot turn the circles of the sun
You cannot count the miles until you feel them
And you cannot hold a lover that is gone
Tomorrow the mountains will be sleeping
Silently the blanket green and blue
All that I shall hear the silence they are keeping
I'll bring all their promises to you
