What's behind a repair?

- Hello Friends,
In my opinion, the biggest flaw of human beings is thinking we're smarter than others (this usually comes from lack of experience). This phenomena is exacerbated by the internet culture where easy and quick answers are there for near anything, and AI is not helping.
Among people doing repairs (any type of repair), one thing we hear often is, "what you do is easy", "you're too expensive, I can do it blindfolded", etc. Also, you have the "smarter" ones that have found a quick and easy way to do what other dumb-asses do the hard way.
In camera repair, one of those "smart" tricks is to flush an oily diaphragm or shutter with solvent to remove oil (just don't). I'm sure in other fields, there is a variety of such tricks.
In this video I show you the kind of work, knowledge and training that is involved in a proper repair. So, relax, enjoy, and learn the way of dumb-asses.

I appreciate your determination and positive attitude about keeping these tools of analog film photography alive. Repairing old cameras, lenses and large format shutters has been my main hobby for about 40 years and I have been asked to teach people everything about the process countless times. Of course it is almost impossible to share knowledge acquired over years of experience in a short amount of time. Things always seem incredibly complicated at first, but once you make a few mistakes and learn from doing so, it’s very satisfying to reach a level of comfort and confidence in our abilities. Thank you for all of your time and dedication to this craft!
I always find extremely enriching getting feedback from people who has been doing this longer than me. I've been doing this for 7 years now, and it has been a fantastic learning journey; learn patience (strong pre-requisite though), learn not to give up, and learn when to give up, dexterity, and the most important among many others, how to teach. The journey is far from over as your own 40 year journey shows. I guess the recipe for success is keep curious and exploit every single learning opportunity, that's the only way to grow. Thanks !
This the reason I started making videos. I saw postings in various places where people were saying that my repair costs were high. So, I began making videos to show exactly what was involved in servicing old cameras properly.
There are good and "quick" repairs, sadly "quick" repairs are more common, because they are simple, cheap, quick, and work (not for long). Recently I saw a post of a guy (provocation I guess), saying the following: "don't bother disassembling your diaphragm for cleaning, just drop it on a lighter fluid bath and it will be as good as new. You think this is bad practice, wrong. All camera shops do it this way, and charge like they have disassembled it".
So, we're fighting against that kind of poor advice, keep the good work. I didn't know your channel but now you have a subscriber.

Above all, I like your candour and honesty.
Thanks my friend, don't forget to share with friends !
@@diyextravaganza I will .-)
Nice explanation!~
@@TenchiLoh you're welcome, it was hard work but getting to understand that beautiful piece of engineering is a reward by itself.
@@diyextravaganza I am also starting to learn repairing vintage camera on my own for my vintage camera collection due to no repair shop near me. The nearest need to ship out is 1625 kilometers aways. (3 hours flight)
@@TenchiLoh that's really an issue, hope my channel will help you with your quest. The more you repair, the easier it will become. I've been repairing lenses for 7 years now, nearly one a week. Best
@@diyextravaganza Yes very helpful. Currently repairing Yashica Mat 124, need to service the copal sv shutter. Do you have video on that kind of shutter?
