Does it work for VR lens as well?
Hi, I've disassembled the VR as well, removing some parts of it is a bit more tricky as far as I can remember, so, proceed with caution. Best.
Ok so the fungus is gone but so is the lens coating, right?
No, coatings are extremely tough, I've fixed to this day some 450 lenses, and I've seen damage done by fungus in only 3 or 4 lenses. By that I mean the fungus etching into the coating and glass, and it was basically on cheap lenses. I've seen slight discoloration in some 20 or so lenses, but once cleaned, it is impossible to see the damage under normal lightning conditions. So yes, it can happen, but it is rather unlikely. Best.
@@diyextravaganza ok thanks, I always thought the fungus developed in the coating so thought it was f’d more or less once you got it!
Very Cool. I love mirror lenses. Sigma made a 600mm mirror lens that came in olive drab and I always thought is was the ultimate spy lens. Owning one it's a little disappointing for shooting. I just wish they were sharper and autofocus. I keep hoping some manufacturer will apply modern computer design and coatings and produce a sharp AF mirror lens.
@@TexMex421 I do think Minolta has one, but I'm not 100% sure about that. It would be nice but I don't think no one will ever made one, making a really good coating for the glass, it will be really costly, and to get very good results, surface would need to be aspherical, which is also costly. Let's hope !
Very good video! I´ve a doublet with the strangest blobs between elements. I need to do this procedure ,-) I´ve another single lens with a ver stubburn fog/haze that I cannot clean with Isopropyl alcohol or Oxygenated water .-( Should I try (kitchen) White vinegar, Cleaning vinegar (1% more acid), Acetone or some Hand Cream with NaOH (sodium hydroxide)? Thanks a lot.
Hi, just remember that the most important thing for any repair procedure is patience. Don't rush anything, don't force anything. For the haze, try nose grease, and no, I'm not kidding, rub the lens surface with your nose, spread and then clean using alcohol (or vinegar). I've cleaned large format lenses this way with a lot of success. Just let me know if the outcome. Cheers.

Which adapter can i used 1.8d lence?
Hi, you can use a Nikon to whatever camera system you're using. Contrary to lot of lenses, Nikkor lenses have a long flange distance and therefore adapt easily to other camera systems. Best.
@@diyextravaganza okk tq
What to choose ? I bought the F1.8 Why ? I could not justify spending an extra £1,000 on on the F1.4. No point. My 85mm F1.8 is my favourite prime lens. The images on my Nikon D610 are simply stunning. The 1.4 would have made not one jot of a difference to my photos.
@@mikewilson8513 The best lens is the one you know its strengths and weaknesses. Lenses are just tools and as long as the job gets done, who cares? Best
@@diyextravaganza Agreed.
Good try, but A bit unfair on Minolta with its yellow haze, that reduces the sharpness and colour rendition. Looks like you have a radioactive lens that you must either enjoy its yellow vintage look, but not compare it to the clean glass, or treat the yellow haze under a strong UV light for a few days, before doing comparison.
@@numistika Thanks for the advice. I'll take it for future comparisons. Best.
Minolta Rokkor is decentred... or bad repair. Maybe dexter scene poorly focused. A BAN table lenses swapped Minolta in left and Nikon in right. Everyone who takes photos with a Minolta lens knows its Minolta colors and Minolta cromatic aberation. They are definitely on the left picture...
Thanks for the advice. Best.
You can only test a lens objectively by using a proper lens test chart, not your eyes. Our eyes are all different. Read about how tests are done and the concept of JND's. (Just Noticeable Differences)
I agree and there are other videos that do exactly that. I prefer working with the final result and let people choose what they prefer as you don't see the "vibe" of the lens on standard tests. According to standard tests, the Zeiss 35mm 1.4 is a terrible lens, in real life, it's a wonderful lens. Cheers.
Gracias de verdad, habia dado por perdido mis lentes. Ahora veo que tienen oportunidad.

2:50. What is this? And. What happens if the fungus it is between this group of lenses?
What do you mean by "what is this?" at 2:50? I just see a piece of glass. If fungus is inside, you'll need to disassemble further and clean as shown on the video, if a sealed group, here is an option ruclips.net/video/XxVDBvCJOk0/видео.html
Saludos.

@@JohnCross-rz5uq yes, I got it wrong there, anyway, fun lens to use.
@@diyextravaganza Yes, I think it will be fun, I have always thought to try some of the 1000mm and 1000+mm reflex Lenses, fx Zeiss Mirotar 1000mm 5.6, Reflex-Nikkor 2000mm 11.0 and Pentax Reflex 2000mm 13.5, those need exteme sturdy tripods

Hola amigo, un saludo !
Interesting video - thanks a lot. BTW: on the start screen it says "Super Zoom" - I think it's a fixed lens.
@@joerg_koeln you're right, I should have written super "tele lens" or something of the sort. A really fun lens to use, "you take beautiful pictures and you become very strong " if you read forcing on the Russian accent can plausibly sound like an advertisement for the thing 😋
@@diyextravaganza I had a 500mm reflex Nikkor and did not use it much. Focusing was a bit too painful and it was still big. Instead, I have bought a 200-500mm f/5.6 zoom with AF and vibration reduction, but it also works with a 2x tele converter. Ok, the lens cost 3x as much as the lens shown, but it‘s an excellent modern lens with brilliant picture quality.
@@joerg_koeln yes, the price gap is somehow significant and the image quality reflects that. These mirror lenses are really fun to use and were a solution to zooms of the time that were really poor quality.
I remember this lens being advertised back in the '70's, alongside Zenith cameras. There was a 500mm/f8 too I recall, as you say Russian (USSR) made, M42 mount, so fits Praktica etc Monster of a thing i imagine - no tripod mount?
@@Gwalion yes, there are some threads that do allow mounting onto a tripod, yes, USSR made (forgot the time frame 😅), anyway, quite a fun lens. Had the 500mm f/8 at some point in the past, also a huge lens. They have their adepts as I've managed to sell the 500 and 1000mm with relative ease. Cheers.
I have the 500mm of the mto and it's pretty good for the price i bought it. I wanted to buy also the 1000mm but i didn't realize it was so big ahahah Btw, may do you have the Nikon 50mm f2 hc (pre ai)? Because this lense should fit in even without ai conversion, but mine doesn't!! 😢
? My 50mm f2 Nikkor-H, pre-Ai without conversion, fits the Nikon FTZII F to Z adapter without an issue. The serial number is 691769. Admittedly the FTZII is Nikon's half-hearted attempt at an adapter. You would think Nikon would be embarrassed by this product.
@@donkenney1000 yes, in fact it should fit also in the modern dslr reflex, because it's different from the other pre ai lenses (the ai conversion is made putting a little sheet of metal for the aperture lever instead of grinding the ring like othere pre ai lenses) but mine doesn't screw in, idk why. Looks like i will have to grind it
I had the 500mm and it is also a monster. I have tried the 50mm f/2 on the FTZ and seems to work. I also use a third party F To Z adapter sometimes and it works too. Maybe is your bayonet deformed? Cheers.
@@diyextravaganza fortunately not, other lenses fit in smoothly
@@mackenzie540 good, butI meant the bayonet of your lens, had that a few months ago on a 300mm f/4 that I bought very cheap, bayonet was bent, manage to make it straight again, but in between, barely noticeable bends made the lens very difficult to mount.
I have the 1000mm Nikon mirror lens. I find having the sun hitting the background has an interesting effect on the photograph.
That's a lens I've always wanted to test but have never found one cheap. Actually I've only found one and was too expensive, also a monster I guess.

If the lens has peeling color Do you have any advice? I got an old lens but the black color on the lens barrel was peeling off.
Hi, I've never attempted at repairing that. But the only solution in such cases is to remove the paint and paint anew. Which also implies disassembling the lens to work on parts individually.
Thank you very much, I just did the resurrection rokkor zoom 75-200 f4.5 that I got it from an antique shop. I watched your video and fixed it until it was usable. I really need to thank you.

Christopher Frost has a review of this lens on RUclips. You should check it out. But his version is the old Soviet Union one. I have that lens too. It weighs as much as a Soviet tank.
I found it on a camera market and thought it would be fun to use, it is, only drawback is you need big muscles to carry it all day.
@@diyextravaganza it is so heavy you mount the camera to the lens. Its also one that I would never want the tripod to fall with the camera attached or game over for that camera.
Thank you so much for this amazing video. Do you by chance have one or planning to make one on how to remove haze caused by scratches?
@@sarabeujekian7019 Hello, Haze caused by scratches?, I'm not sure I understand what do you mean. Best
Like when you have so many tiny scratches on the lens that it starts to affect the image quality... I've read some people use car polish to buff them out but I don't know if that's the best option.
@@sarabeujekian7019 it's not something I've really tried, I've used in the past some slurries for final polishing, but that's before coating. I've heard of cerium oxide to be an option. Cheers.
Ironic (& fortuitous) that I should find this particular video today - my Micro-Nikkor barrel has become almost immovable. I couldn't quite see what marker pen you were employing. The grease is readily available, but those screwdriver bits - are they Jeweller's implements ? Excellent repair technique - who needs "linear" deconstruction ? 😉
Hello, thanks. For the pen, anything permanent works, the screwdriver tips are japanese, look for J000, J00, J0, and that's the most important thing, don't try with PH ones, you'll damage the screw heads. About the disassembly, I always try to make it as simple as possible. Best
Hello again. Understood, anything indelible, & Japanese J series screwdriver bits - I'll seek same out. In the UK & Ireland, not many camera repair outfits exist anymore - a regrettable downturn - consumers only want something 'new & shiny'; happily, whilst I endorse moderrn technology, I prefer solid build quality, & if that means I have to service my own vintage photographic glass, so be it - & of course, there's always that 'kick' of satisfaction when you complete the task yourself. Thank you & enjoy the day ahead ! Andrew.
@@andrewtongue7084 repairing is a philosophy we terribly lack today, and that at every level (including human interaction) new and shiny always come like the easy answer but reality is usually low quality on a beautiful shell. Repairing makes us appreciate things, get to know them better, and that deep satisfaction of making things work again. Yes, too bad there is fewer and fewer repair people, recently I started working on mechanical shutters myself because according to the friend who challenged me to learn that, there is only two guys in the country doing it so. Best.
This is familiar territory for me, too, & in fact, we had a similarly-aligned conversation upon one of your other videos only a few days ago. Together with a number of other passtimes/hobbies, I repair (& restore) vintage fountain pens - as well as some of their modern contemporaries; I do not care for ballpoints or rollerball scribes. It is indeed ironic that, in this twenty-first century, where technological communication is near its zenith, no-one actually speaks to anyone - everything is virtual - especially 'friends', or should I call them. mere acquaintances; howsoever you refer to such, it is yet another destructive attribute that disappears as rapidly as a faulty electronic signal. I digress. I wish you well in making good on those mechanical shutters - it's clear you have the required dexterity - then it can be said, there are three guys in the country who can deliver that fait accomplis 🙂
@@andrewtongue7084 I was traveling yesterday, long flight, when we landed, after some 10 hours flying, the captain said you can use your phones normally, not after 2 second, I saw most people going to Instagram, TikTok and all those silly pages to watch random people doing random things, I don't understand people anymore. Anyway, end of rant. Fountain pens, that sounds really interesting, I remember opening one long ago, not easy thing. I do most of my writing by hand and I appreciate a good pen.
Beautifully done !
Thanks, a beautiful lens deserves to be treated properly. Best.
Exactly so ! 🙂
Does this method saves lens coatings???
Damaged lens coating due to fungus is kind of old wive tales, to this day, I've done a bit more that 400 lenses, and I've seen real damage on 2 lenses, and very mild damage on 5 or 6 more. I really depends on the quality of the coating. Best.

Thanks a lot! You saved me from returning the lens !
@@longuito great, that would have been a pity.
Excellent comparison. I too own both F 2 & 2.8 at the same focal lengths on most of my primes; in fact - if I were to choose between the two - I'd have the wider aperture in most scenarios, but unless this is your main occupation, there's very little to discriminate, there is however (in 2024) quite a large void in prices between the two ultimate apertures (no prizes for guessing which is the pricier version). Superb analyses !
Hi, thanks, I'll naturally go to the wider aperture too as it contains the smaller too. I agree, the difference between 2 and 1.4 is usually double in price, and the less common 1.2 can sometimes skyrocket. These days I look into really old glass, my favorite one right now being the Nikkor 35 1.4 from 1971. Cheers.
Agreed; prices on e-bay at the moment are ridiculous. The only F 1.2 I own is for a 55mm Olympus, coupled with an early OM1. The largest chunk of vintage Nikon glass I possess is one of the very first issued 85mm F 1.4 AI-S's - & that's heavier than both my FM & F3, individually, or equal to my F4 standard (it doesn't outweigh the F4S). The only 35mm I have presently is the F2 AI-S, however, there is a general consensus that the F 2.8 is optically superior - your channel is equally superior !
@@andrewtongue7084 Hi, thanks for the feedback, the 35mm F2, superior, that's interesting and sounds like a very good comparison video since I have those two around presently 😊
I'd be interested to see how an F 2.8 fares against its larger brother in this particular focal length 🙂

Hi, yes, I added the link on the video description. Best.
Excellent upload -- both classics. I recently wanted a 100mm(-ish) full-frame F-mount portraiture lens. I went with the Nikkor 105mm f2.8 Micro AF-D. Reasons: 1. Price (around $150 US for clean sample), 2. Versatility (also an excellent macro lens), 3. Autofocus (screw drive, which I prefer), 4. Close Range Correction (CRC) the "zenith" imo of Nikkor optical design. 5. Close focus capabilities. Unlike other portrait lenses no real constraint on how close you can be to the subject. Although these classics are very tempting, for me I made the right decision. Any 105mm (and beyond) prime is going to give you great portraits.
Hello, I can add very little to your analysis as it is totally spot on. I also have the 105mm AFD, and like it a lot, I usually take it when I need an all rounder. The ones in the video are legendary lenses, the 105 f/2.5 is super sharp and color rendition is fantastic. The f/1.8 eis even sharper and produces great bokeh, the dream would be to have the three merged on a single lens.
gran video, tengo una duda...sabes que nombre técnico tiene los conectores de 10 pines que ensamblan el flexible de la montura a la placa del circuito impreso del tamron 17-70mm? saludos
Hola, no conozco el nombre tecnico que esos conectores. Saludos
I have one, it’s on my FG at the moment and I will be using it tomorrow. I managed to find both Thai conversion ring and the wired lens hood for it. A normal lens cap won’t fit over the hood, but I managed to buy a Hoya screw-in cap and a 52 mm filter thread spacer ring from SRB here in the UK, and these together will fit over the hood. I have actually used it as intended with flashbulbs, it was quite a good idea at the time; I think it was introduced in 1964. I bought my one about 20 years ago.
@@srfurley it's a very interesting lens, maybe a bit too small. Never tried it with flash myself, the results are good? Cheers.
Hi, Thank you very much for this video. Can you please tell me the dimensions of the GPU in 7520? Is it MXM 3.0b or MXM 3.0a? I want to order them before i start this job.
Hi, I don't know, the one I have installed is Nvidia Quadro m2200m, I hope this info is useful. Cheers.
Is it 82 mm X 70 mm (type A) or 105 mm x 82 mm(type B) ?
@@user-oj1ng4pv4i hello, it's mxm-a. Best
Hi. Based on your review, I might prefer the 50mm 1.4 to the 1.8 g. They seems to be both good. I have the 24-70mm f2.8 (a powerfull beast) on a d850. Would it be a big improvment at 50mm to use one of these prime lens compared to my zoom?
My opinion may be biased because I prefer prime lenses. We'll with the 50 1.4, you'll be two stops faster than with your zoom and that can make the difference in low light conditions. You'll get more bokeh if that's something you're interested in. Best.
@@diyextravaganza thanks, i'm looking for a better bokeh, maybe better colors, sharpness or some caracter to a prime lens. This 1.4 may not be that sharp but gives some charms to the pics you've done. My Zoom for the job, versatility, efficiency, and a few prime lens for better result and a bit of fun. Thanks for your answer and good day ^^
@@hyperion2502 you're welcome, if you have the budget, I recommend the 58mm 1.4G, it has what you mentioned ,test it before buying because it is a love it or hate it lens. I personally love it.
I hope you remembered to replace the spacer ring you left out during the reassembly of the rear group of lens elements.
I did that? LoL, I did not have any loose parts at the end, so the answer is yes.

Hello, You mentioned that both GPUs that you have are in parallel so they act as if they are a single one. Do you mean that they are connected with NVlink? Do you have a "proof" that both are used? (For instance in task manager). I'm wondering since only one is shown as selected un Fluent. Thank you!
Hi, I configured them to act as one, using the suitable adapter. If I remember correctly, it was not allowing me to select both in such situation. I cannot test since I changed GPUs a few months ago, I'm using a single Quadro RTX 5000 now.
@@diyextravaganza Many thanks for your answer. Do you remember if both GPU were working (especially, if for large meshes both memory were used) ? I'm preparing to put a new workstation to the budget, but I hesitate with a few options. Either RTX 4000 Ada (or slightly better), or rather cheaper models but 2 or 3 of them (e.g., RTX A2000 12 GB or RTX 2000-Ada 16GB). Depending on the models, I could plan to buy 1 first and then upgrade to 2 or 3 (even for the 4000 Ada). As far as I know, Ampere chips (A2000 etc.) support NVlink, but not Ada Lovelace chips. I'm unsure how the native GPU solver of Fluent behaves with several GPUs, especially for Ada generation.
@@tea-hash-sea Yes both where used, in case where mesh was big enough to require it. However, this seemed to limit a bit the performance as you have both GPUs exchanging info. For this particular reason (and because I found ridiculously cheap), I upgraded to an Quadro RTX5000, and I've tested it with the native GPU solver and it is lightning fast. I made a video about it, but you saw it already as you put a comment there. Cheers
@@diyextravaganza Thanks for the info!
@@tea-hash-sea You're welcome. Keep connected, I'm planning a series of tutorials, even if you seem to know your way around it never hurts to have a refreshment on the basics.
Sir. Im about to start the procesa of what I thought was a Lost lens, hopefully I'll be able to solve this.
