That was fun recording it with friends! Hope you enjoyed it 🙏 next video coming right next Saturday, stay tuned (and consider turning on the notification bell so you won't miss the live premiere!)
"cải xoong" is called watercress in English :D it's slightly bitter and very crunchy, we usually cook it into soup with a bit of ground pork called "canh cải xoong" (watercress soup), it's my favorite :D thanks for taking us with you guys on a grocery shopping trip in Vietnam 👍👍
Grocery stores tell you so much about the people , even if only traveling wIthin the USA.thank you for taking me to a grocery I will never get to see in person
Niki, lost you and now found you again. You were a great person to understand what was going on in the Ukrainian war as it relates to a Russian citizen. Your English is really easy to understand. Again glad to see you doing well and are safe. God keep you well and safe from a unjust war.
This video was very enjoyable to watch. Such a great choice of fresh fruit and vegetables. Your housemates are very good cooks, and the meals they made look absolutely delicious! You seem to have really immersed yourself in Vietnamese culture. 👍
Trai Su Su is chayote. It's actually a fruit, but is used as a vegetable/squash. Nicki, I love that you take us grocery shopping, since I'm a "foodie". Thanks for the experience.
I really enjoyed the video, but the editing was a bit choppy and fast. That made it a little hard to watch but the content was excellent and I enjoyed seeing and hearing your roommates. Seems like you all eat pretty well! As for exploring a new country,my guess is that you might be going to Indonesia perhaps Java or Bali or maybe even Sri Lanka. Let me know if I got it right. You have already been to Cambodia and I’m not sure that Laos or Myanmar would be safe. if you went to Japan, you would definitely have sticker shock. It’s one of the most expensive places I have ever traveled.
Absolutely love your videos - all of the information, gorgeous scenery, and interactions with the people you meet. You make these countries REAL And your charming personality is the best!
Having been to 40 countries in the last 30+ years, I think it's great for young people to travel across Asia. There are so many different places to explore and costs are low enough so you get really good value for the money. Other continents are interesting too, but maybe not as safe or inexpensive as Asia.
Nikki you must have read my mind!!! I just got home from work (I work for Hospice) and thought man I need to tell him that while I will never be able to afford the postcard club, I'll always follow. Btw..I also go to grocery to learn about the people and what life is like locally! Such a clever young man!!
Another great video Niki, thanks for taking us along! In Canada and the US, we would call those Pumpkins "Squash" and there are many many varieties of Squash as you noted. We only call one kind of Squash a Pumpkin. See you in the next one!
I live in the US and I don’t know the names of most squashes / pumpkins. I know zucchini (yellow or green) and I know the orange pumpkin…the rest, I just say “it’s a pumpkin or squash”
Really enjoy your grocery shopping videos, love seeing the people and different foods, also so much cheaper cost of living their, I see why you like living there, can’t wait to see your next adventure and would love a postcard.
Yup Asia is home to me. I've been here a decade now. When I left China I went back to Europe for a bit but life had moved on. I couldn't imagine living anywere else. Europe is fine for holidays. And as we know Georgia is too tense right now.Myanmar gives me that Balkans/Georgia feeling whilst being in Aisa. I just came back from Bangkok last night. That place is a nightmare. I only go there for medical and picking up stuff. I upload every week ever since I opened my channel even though I work full time as a kinder teacher and am nearly 60 ha ha!
looks so amazing! I really appreciate your idea to share a postcard with the regular commenters. Best of luck to everyone. It was nice to see a little comparison between the supermarkets and the fresh market. I understand why a lot of locals choose the fresh market and if you adapt your shopping style it seems like the best way to go, even if it isnt what we are used to.. Also, turning your visa run into a 10-14 day trip seems like an absolute win, getting two tasks done at once, a video, and visa renewal. it would let you see a lot of different places for just a bit more cost in time+money than hopping the border and back. Cant wait to see where you go.
Enjoyed this shopping vlog! Like seeing all of the different fruits and vegetables that I've never seen before. The meals cooked looked delicious and you're friend's are all very kind! I like how you sat down at the end of your video with your final thought's. Enjoyed watching Niki!❤❤❤😊
Great shopping vlog Niki. The meals look delicious and all your roommates seem so cool and nice. I hope you plan on staying there for a while, seems like a great and peaceful place to be...
An AirBnb host here in Chicago invited me and 2 other guests to enjoy dinner which she prepared. It was kind of last minute and I wasn't sure I could eat much since I wasn't really hungry. I was sorry I'd said as much because the food she gave us was really amazing. It was satisfying and delicious. I think I could have eaten a lot more of it! I'm glad for your experiences and thank you for sharing them. I like your taste in postcards, too! 🙂
I always enjoy your grocery shopping videos. That bag of vegetables was a great price. How is the price of shrimp? When is it your turn to cook Russian dinner? That light green vegetable is called chayote in English and is a squash. Hello to your roommates!
Looks like you´ve found some very nice people to share a house with. Good to see you guys getting along so well! Love the idea about the postcards too.
Hey Niki, you can't get real sour cream in Canadian supermarkets either. We hve to shop at the Polish or Romanian supermarket. i had a bit of a chuckle when you talked about it being so good and real. The green vegetable you asked about is called chayote, cho cho, Christophene, Mirleton.... and probably has more names since it originated in Mesoamerica. It grows on a vine. Very productive when it's happy.
14:02 Carrots: One strange difference of those carrots compared to ours in the UK is that those have more of the green roots left on. Our carrots usually have no roots at all, although one _can_ buy carrots with roots, but they are sold as something special, something extra healthy. And more expensive!
Niki, it's good to see that you're safe, happy, and enjoying life. What a great bunch of people you've found to live with, and Dalat (at 1500 m. altitude) seems like a good place to be. It was fascinating to see all the stuff that's available at the markets.

So happy you're living your best life Nikki! It's a long way from tiktoks in your grandmas kitchen in Russia. Life is what you make it. All the best to you and your loved ones. ❤
Excellent film. When I go abroad I enjoy walking around both supermarkets and ordinary markets. Su Su is chayote in English (and Spanish). It originated from southern Mexico and Central America. My parents are from Mexico but in the central north where they don’t eat it but I’ve seen when eating in southern Mexico. It’s probably more popular in Asia though which is funny to me Not sure how it’s pronounced as I’ve only heard it pronounced in Spanish and I only see them in the US in Mexican or Asian grocery stores. Good to know about chayote, I've never heard this word in my life. About the postcard, you better edit "post card" into a single word "postcard", I think the website I'll use for picking a comment won't notice "post card" with a space
As a, life-long, restaurant cook, I found the grocery shopping very entertaining. I was saying Su-Su…yuzu? suzu? Both items I’m familiar with😊 but it’s actually chayote squash
My nephew loved Cambodia. That’s my guess. Where you’re living is beautiful and a lot less expensive than everywhere you mentioned. You’ve got it made there and with all the friends you’re living with this will be a time you will never forget and will look back fondly on.
mr niki i love your videos so much this is way better than all the affluence content on youtube i prefer to see regular lives of somewhat regular people and compare it to my own, its more enjoyable to be informed about the world as a whole and not just the top 10% :D

I remember watching your videos about grocery shopping in Russia, and now I just watched a video about you shopping in my very own country Vietnam, which is really cool. The sights in Vietnamese supermarkets and fresh markets are so familiar with me, even though I don't live in Da Lat (I'm from Ha Noi). So happy for you and I hope you will enjoy your stay in Vietnam. For your next trip, I guess maybe you'll visit Laos or Cambodia.
The most fun I had in my life was living under the same roof with other people from different countries each. This is the closest best to being an astronaut into solving world peace. Just people chilling, having fun and exchanging stories. Also, I hope you're not actually putting your real address there, in case Mother Russia goes around snooping, pretending to be a patreon supporter or something.
It really is a nice place to live. Nice people gorgeous scenery and shops catering for all tastes at great prices. I see no downsides to the experience. A great place to call home, for now...maybe much longer?
Question for video: What are the various reasons why you chose Vietnam over the other Asian countries to live in? What are the things you wish they would do better in Vietnam?
The visa is easiest for Vietnam. The motorcycles everywhere that you can't walk on the streets. And the karaoke at all hours. Vietnamese are lovely so its a great country to live in.
Make sure you send a postcard sized hello to me from Cambodia if you go there ( i think that is where you are going next ) cheers and happy Solstice from Australia, lovely winter here, i am typing this its about 10 C this morning in Sydney, but the wheather in Dalat sounds nice.
I love how you’re exploring the local markets and supermarkets, it’s like a treasure hunt for unique ingredients. Do you find that the prices or quality of ingredients differ significantly between the two?
Niki I’m so pleased you have found a country that suits you. You seem so happy with your life now. Looking forward to next vid to see where you go. I’m amazed at how cheap the food is, the meals that your friends cooked you looked yummy. Also all your flat mates look nice. New Zealand.
Expensive lately yes. However, in defence: great fresh produce at local farmers markets, farm stands outside city limits selling surplus havest and fresh eggs, coop stores also carry lots of fresh local produce. West coast USA ....Cheers.😊
Thailand has everything you could want in one country, it has the best combination of good infrastructure, friendly people, beautiful beaches, amazing scenery, markets and temples, cheap quality food and accommodation. I have been to every S.E. Asian country and Thailand has the best lifestyle imo!
H Niki ❤❤❤❤ - absolutely fantastic video showing us markets in La Lat! THANK YOU!! Also you are so lucky to have housemates who love to cook .... Wondering if the next country you visit will be LAOS? would love to receive a postcard from wherever you are - best wishes for happiness ❤❤❤❤❤
Su Su is Chayote Squash in English :) Also, omg, I've never seen orange zuchinni! Also, the fresh market is probably where the chefs and people in the know shop :)
In most of the west Su su or chayote squash are generally known as ''Choko''. My local Aldi in Australia now stocks Rivet Vietnamese beer! PS It's interesting that Vietnam uses the English Alphabet when all surrounding countries dont.
Vietnam formerly used another alphabet (similar to Chinese characters) then they changed to the Latin/ English alphabet when they were colonized by France. (or that's what my Viet mom told me, don't know how true or if she got the dates wrong)
I'd love to be the random postcard person! Can't afford to become a member presently, but am a huge postcard collector for over twenty years. Keep on living the life!
Chayote (Su su) Chayote is getting popular in the north of Vietnam. It could be easily processed into totally different kinds of dishes as everything in the chayote fruit is edible. The root and leaves are often sautéed with garlic while the sweet flesh is preferred to be boiled and served with roasted peanuts. Both dishes are emerging specialties in Vietnam.
You are so lucky to have such good housemates and such good cooks too! I enjoy your trips to get groceries. It's very interesting to see what's different and what's the same in other countries/cultures. Duck eggs aren't something normally seen in the grocery stores where I live in the southern part of the US. My daughter collects postcards and it would be so cool to get one from Asia. One of my friends brought some postcards for her when he went home to Serbia for a visit. It made her day.
That postcard with the lady in traditional clothing skateboarding is soooo cool ;) I am glad to see you back making videos!!! And the dragon fruit... 2 for a dollar??? that is so insanely cheap!! They are like 6 euros a piece here in Portugal =(
In your next video where you talk about your daily life in Vietnam and why you like living in Asia, explain some of the differences between Asia/Vietnam and Georgia. In Vietnam, how do you get by with the language? In Georgia you probably don't have any language issues.
I would love to get a postcard from you! I also love grocery store content. I always find it super interesting to see what grocery stores abroad sell and how much things cost there.
greetings from Vietnam! I'm originally coming from Russia. By the way, you better edit "post card" into "postcard" without a space, so the tool I use for picking a comment works for your postcard too :)
Hi Nikki , I love Vietnamese Food especially PHO ! I live in westminster CA Large Vietnamese community Love the markets and food. Love watching your videos. Keep up the great work!
Really good advice to go grocery shopping to learn more about the area you are in! Even in the US the stores and items vary from place to place. I would love to have a postcard from you, Niki! ❤

It's Niki's personality that makes his videos. I would watch a video of him painting a fence and talking about his feelings and experience on that!
There is a Vietnamese market in Memphis that I love going to, so many exotic items, tons of produce.

Shrimp is inexpensive here, comparable to pork or beef prices. Sometimes we get it too. That might be my turn cooking Russian breakfast, not a dinner!
Your vlogs are getting more and more enjoyable - thank you!
Looks like you´ve found some very nice people to share a house with. Good to see you guys getting along so well! Love the idea about the postcards too.
Would like it if you interviewed your friends and people you meet, and what you do every day.
Hi. The green round vegetable is a round courgette. Like your outfit. The goat cheese is very very tasty! The su we call chayota.

Su su in French is called chouchou (almost the same pronunciation), or chayotte in the French overseas islands.
I guess that's where the name choko comes from. That's what Australians know it as.

Không có nơi nào là tốt nhất, chỉ có nơi phù hợp với bạn nhất!
Chúc mừng bạn đã tìm được mảnh đất phù hợp, hãy tận hưởng.❤
H Niki ❤❤❤❤ - absolutely fantastic video showing us markets in La Lat! THANK YOU!!
Also you are so lucky to have housemates who love to cook ....
Wondering if the next country you visit will be LAOS? would love to receive a postcard from wherever you are - best wishes for happiness ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you 😊 it won't be Laos for this time, but I want to visit there too. I only traveled to Laos for 1 days for a visa run back in 2020
Loving your new videos, you look so much happier now inyour new life, i would love a postcard from you in Vietnam ❤
Su Su is Chayote Squash in English :) Also, omg, I've never seen orange zuchinni! Also, the fresh market is probably where the chefs and people in the know shop :)
Orange zucchini looks so much more beautiful than ordinary green ones 😁
Niki stay safe enjoy life and don't get caught up in bad Vlads meat grinder , your content is wonderful.
(or that's what my Viet mom told me, don't know how true or if she got the dates wrong)
sour cream. cream and lemon set out 24 hr covered loosly. bingo sour cream.
I'd love to be the random postcard person! Can't afford to become a member presently, but am a huge postcard collector for over twenty years. Keep on living the life!
Chayote (Su su)
Chayote is getting popular in the north of Vietnam. It could be easily processed into totally different kinds of dishes as everything in the chayote fruit is edible. The root and leaves are often sautéed with garlic while the sweet flesh is preferred to be boiled and served with roasted peanuts. Both dishes are emerging specialties in Vietnam.
Interesting episode Niki, who does not love food :-) Especially for most of us in the temperate north, supermarkets in an Asian country.
I would love to receive a postcard!! Great video Niki! ❤😊
Sounds like it’s your turn to cook a Russian meal for your friends!! Would love a postcard!
Probably yes 😅 a Russian breakfast that can be!
Dragonfruit is America: $5.00 ea.
I prefer yellow ones, for the sweetness BUT! 2 hours after eating, “slippage” occurs😅
Omg that's expensive for a single dragonfruit
They are like 6 euros a piece here in Portugal =(
Su Su in Australia is Choko, available in any supermarket. My guess 'Choko' is derived from the french name mentioned in another post.
I live in Nova Scotia Canada Braden . Where do you come from my friend. Nikki is a great room mate I would think ❤👍 and of course POSTCARD 😂😂😂
greetings from Vietnam! I'm originally coming from Russia. By the way, you better edit "post card" into "postcard" without a space, so the tool I use for picking a comment works for your postcard too :)
Thanks friend 😁

Your friend is living the dream-- in Vietnam steadily cooking dinners for all of your friends. Sounds like my typa life man.
Yes!
Really good advice to go grocery shopping to learn more about the area you are in! Even in the US the stores and items vary from place to place. I would love to have a postcard from you, Niki! ❤
Such a good video! Do you cook for the house?
I rarely cook here, just prepare breakfasts sometimes
