    Honestly my biggest complaint is that it is another strain on damage con. It's already a skill to use your damage cons properly to deal with flooding and fires. This should have it's own thing - maybe a skillcheck?

      I'm ok with the homing ping on the ship, but there needs to have something like a ping reduction value for ships, like how there are torpedo damage reduction.

    But here's the issue that I find alot in many ships, the ASW plane's range on many ships are VERY short so short in fact that a lot of subs sail right outside your ASW range but they can still ping and torp you. I feel like alot of the ASW ranges should be normalized so you can actively fight back. If you try to sail towards them then you either get hounded by their team or if it's a sub with backward facing tubs, it can run away once you start getting closer.

      I think instead of increasing the range of ASW aircraft they should decrease the range of the sonar pings. The torps can still have their long range, but the sub would have to get within range of the enemy to actually make them home in on the target. Either that or just make the homing torps have far less range than the non-homing torps. Just launching torps at max range in a T10 sub is just boring gameplay for the sub player, and absolutely infuriating for those getting harrassed by them.

    The arguments and examples of how to fight subs are the new version of "you can just doge the CVs planes" argument. Sure there are some things you can do in a 1v1 fight against subs. But what happens when you are already engaged with other surface ships. I'm order to deal with the sub you need to drop most other things you are doing. And only god can save you if you are in a ship that doesn't have airplane ASW

      Omg please “drop everything” takes 2 seconds. That chapaev he shotgunned saw a dart of torps pass him and instead of dropping his depth charges which reload fairly quick. He just ignored it.

      @@SteelxWolf so what about a sub that just stays in the back and spams torps. Shotguning isn't a the only thing they can do. And without the sub being spotted how well do you presume a normal player will be able to questimate it's position. And like my previous comment said, if you are on a ship that doesn't have plains, you literally have to drop everything else and try to get on top of the sub to drop depth charges.

      @@stalwartteakettlepotato9879 you may quite literally have to run. subs sniping you from the back is not as ridiculous as it sounds. They still have to get within range. Not like they are pining you 15km away.
      However I will say if you put yourself into a bad position and a sub kills you, blaming the sub is not really doing anything. It would be no different to a DD torping you coasting right outside detection

      @@SteelxWolf so the grand counter to the Subs is to play more passively and stick in larger groups. Realistically speaking if you use such strategies that's the best chance you have to defend against them. Such brilliant design. Oh and pleas do tell me how to know where the sub will go at the beginning of the game. It's down to luck wether it will be on your side of the map during the opening engagements.

    After a few days I can say one thing definitively. This game is deceptively simple looking but incredibly nuanced and detail oriented. Great guide.

    Yes simple on paper, easy to demonstrate in training room, but now try it in random and don't forget wg said they want them in ALL game mode so now imagine ranked, clan battle and king of the sea

    The fact is, a standard subs player, shooting torps from long range ,undetected, deal 10k+ damages whether the target was angle or not and just used the DC , gave me chill and frustration .Don't tell me this stuff suits the game about ships maneuvering around the map for position while 1 guy could afk farming better and took less risk than a smoke up DD/cruiser

    I found a better way to counter subs, Started playing other games.
    First time in a while I played another game more in one day than World of Warships, Assassin's Creed Black Flag is better than I thought, had it in backlog for years.

    The issue is, like with CVs, you can barely counter them...
    WG either has to shorten the dive time significantly or just remove those stupid homing torpedos. Also, the faster a subarine goes, the bigger the detection radious should be, just like IRL.
    Just remember, when you play in a ship, you know have to pay attention to other ships shooting you, invisible DDs AND Submarines torping you and CVs murdering you from any direction above... FUN

      Yeah, WG is notoriously bad at game balance seemingly never playing their own game. I think the only reasons we don't have subs in Legends....yet....is I'm not sure consoles have the resources to also render an underwater environment and destroyers in Legends pretty much all have concealment buffs compared to their PC counterparts and so effectively are subs already, just with more guns and utility.
      On top of that, most battleships have zero counter play or even any ability to defend themselves from destroyers other than "run away and hope the dd player makes a whole bunch of mistakes over at least two minutes", which is about the minimum number of salvos needed to maybe kill a dd with a battleship.
      Then, of course, there are carriers who get to sit in the back of back of the map, risking even less than dds, getting free damage and utility and screwing up the game for every ship type.

      Torp arming distance need to be 3-5km to prevent shotgunning.
      My god WG are one of the most garbage companies in terms of game balance.

      WG believes that it's user base are too stupid to play their game. So, dynamic stats are not gonna, happen.
      I say... Remove player controlled ASW strikes, and the auto CV's ones... then put a detection bar on the UI for subs (which increases, as they are spotted), and when it gets to 100%. They automatically get detonated by cosmetic, ASW planes. (As for periscope depth... limit it's draw distance to 6km or something; kinda like cyclones.) (As for homing torps... cap the number they can use, per game.)

    problem with your solution to popping damage con is that the sub will have torps again in 30-ish seconds. What BB can escape from a sub in 30 seconds? so yeah, you will escape the salvo, but the next salvo will sink you.

      Well he knows tha, but like PQ they never dare to upset WG, so détection range of a sub is 2 fucking km and how on earth can u detect a ship 8 to 10 km and call “limited”.?? Ur advice is pretty much ignoring the fact that subs can ping u every 7 seconds and and toro cool down is under 40, the best reload time for Repair con on BB is more than a minute, almost same with cruisers. WG are scumbags and CC’s are too much of pussies to anger their WG masters.

    Still think subs should take 4x fire and flooding damage. With flooding preventing them from diving of having to emergency surface.

    Very good and informative video.
    on a CA when you see the torps using dcp is already too late - they will still most likely hit you - just for a bit lower amount of damage.
    Also good subs that use homing torps are stagering the launch of the torps and the pings. They basically launch a 2nd group of torps at 20-40s after the first salvo. And kaunch the ping after the first pings get DCPed. Also they dont launch the 2nd group of torps before getting double ping on enemy so that they will be non guided torps for a while and switch to guided mode with the next ping after DCP

    Any moderately competent player in a submarine can easily kill any DD they come across - they can outspot by a mile, they are at least as fast, and to kill a sub a DD must aggressively push into it. By shotgunning bow or stern torps at close range en masse you guarantee a devstrike. The only chance a DD has of killing a sub is if they surprise a sub and essentially end up literally on top of it before the sub can react - which sub players will quickly learn how to easily avoid by simple map awareness.
    This totally negates the value of DDs in caps and spotting. Subs do indeed get dogpiled if they are spotted, early in the game - but a prudent commander will wait until half the ships are left / distracted and then they can just clean up the middle of the map, wipe out any remaining DDs, etc.
    This makes submarines extremely frustrating to play against as a DD - I for one will never, ever make the mistake again of chasing down and trying to kill a sub in a DD. Now if one spawns on the same side of the map, I know my game is going to be much worse and much more frustrating. Relying on an enemy's stupidity and mistakes in order to have a fair shot at them is never a good engagement and is exactly why CVs are so widely hated still.
    Despite the power to easily kill any DD in the game without running a risk of counterplay, a good submarine player still usually has little impact on the game. They may go through a whole game without having a single meaningful interaction, and even if they do, many of those interactions will be a one-shot, one-kill dev strike.
    So submarines remain incredibly unengaging to play despite the absolutely massive, unhistorical and downright ridiculous buffs they have been handed one after the other. WG has openly stated their logic for balancing subs is not based on interactions, but on the number of players playing them. If

      German dds with Hydro could help a lot with subs especially if they get spotted and dive deep where they can't shotgun you
      You could also try to smoke push with Hydro to help you close the distance and avoid getting devs truck
      If you got a friend a Italian dd I think it was that has the smoke that let's them go full speed while smoking and a German dd with Hydro is ganna work amazing

SLM has literally just gone through this and found this particular point to be total crap and is just more mindless whining about how subs are destroying the game etc. Stop moaning and learn how to counter them properly and you will be fine. Why should a chunk of the community lose their choice of vehicle just because a small section of the more vocal community members bitch because they aren't untoucables anymore? Safe sailing :~)

      @@thbran7417 Hydro doesn't detect subs at max depth. And smoke screens dont help with proximity spotting at 2 km, and shotgun torps don't care if you're going 55 knots or 30

    I see a sub, I run away. WG wants passive playstyle, no problem.
    Your advice is good in general, but the limited ASW range, the limited time till you can react, the high speed of subs makes it almost impossible to counter them at T10.
    DDs should not even try to drop charges, that is almost impossible to get over a sub unless you are in the endgame and it has no support.
    Hydrophone is ridiculous too. It can detect you from miles away so good luck to evade.

    A bit of experience: subs at periscope depth are vulnerable to gunfire. Secondary guns on things like german BB or Massachusetts work really well if someone spots the sub

    If you could assemble a Wolf Pack of Subs you could in theory dive beneath the sea and go behind the enemy even if they are together in a formation most probably they will be off guard

    YOU FORGOT THE BIGGEST ONE: UK DDs are awesome at sinking submarines: Particularly Lightning! Lightning is super maneuverable, has deadly depth charges especially if you're using demolition expert which you should be anyway for increasing the already good fire chance of your HE shells, You hunt him with your hydro, even though you only spot him at 2k it's not difficult to find him if you've got a clue as to where he is. Your hydro lasts a full 3 minutes, I've sunk 2 "separated" subs within one hydro charge..."Surprise MFer"! You've also got smoke for in case you get spotted in route. Dude! Lightning hunts submarines like no other DD: other UK DDs are good but Lightnings' maneuverability/turn radius/acceleration reigns supreme. One rack of depth charges is usually enough, they hit HARD and because of your hydro are usually well on target. The new subs however have more HP so... maybe use both racks!
    Hint: use 3/4 or 1/2 throttle to tighten up your turn radius if needed. And hey... Lightning is a fun DD to play anyway! If you're playing Lightning in a sub game, subs are "your responsibility"!

    Playing in COOP forces you to decide whether to run or fight the sub. If there is more than 2 ships and the sub then I run. I die when I make the decision to fight, which usually means no credits are earned or very little. Add into this the CV. A Star Trek Kobayashi Maru no win situation.

    yeah but subs sit outside of your ASW range. It is a thing at t6 it is a thing at t8 and even at t10 many bbs can not target a sub player who uses its range.

    Subs ruin the flow of the game entirely. You have to completely drop whatever you're doing and focus on them, but that means fumbling about in the dark trying to find them. Only a real idiot sub captain will ping you when you're looking for them. Also what's with Ohio having 6km asw? Absolutely idiotic. The addition of subs is bad, and I really don't understand anyone other than people who love trolling people with subs would think otherwise.

      Nothing wrong with at least trying to spin the positive, blunt the damage a bit. SLM does good work, but the video comes off as a bit out of touch to me. I just feel like it does not properly counter our concerns in the first place.
      He lost me at saving DamageCon until the last possible second to avoid getting dev-struck... Yeah but maybe we don't actually WANT to eat 4-6 10k damage torps? So we are morons for trying to clear the homing and attempt to dodge? Most DDs cant take the torp salvo to begin with, so saving DCP won't do much but prevent floods.

      @@gfriedline perhaps I didn’t explain it clearly enough. What I mean is that you save it so that your DC run time covers you dodging the torps. For example, if your DC time is 5 seconds (let’s say you’re in a DD or CL) pop it when the Torpedos are roughly 5 seconds away from entering your ships non-homing zone so that the sub cannot simply reacquire the lock. I do not mean don’t DC until the torps are kissing your torp protection. You just have to cut it close. And yes the sun can just ping you again afterwards and just get another round of torps out. Which is stupid imo, but it is what it is

    but did you watch the clip of ahskance getting shotgunned by a submarine, and at 2:08, i thought weegee removed the ability for surface ships to see pings in the water and we can only see that slight underwater visual effect when they ping?

    Radars work very well on vertical metallic uprights, such as yacht masts and submarine periscopes so subs should be detected by any non fully submerged submarine.

    Are they going to out sonar on DD's? I find it interesting that we have subs with homing torpedoes, but no sonar on DD's and maybe CL as well. Make it so that deploying sonar forces the ship to go slower or whatever, but spot subs a ways away. This way, a team can take out the sonar boat more easily, but the sonar boat can spot the sub.

    Subs are zero fun to play and prevent offensive game play for everyone as well. Sitting in a BB in the back for most of the game for example. Then the repair nonsense, the maneuvering to avoid torps and get slapped by others instead. So positioning play gets destroyed as well. DD gameplay against subs is useless as well. You have to be very lucky to survive a sub engagement in order to destroy them. It sucks to have them in the game!
    WG stated for a very long time, implementing them, would break the game. It did. Well done WG!

    Best method, have most ships in the rear sniping and behind islands but relatively close to the objective then have a sonar DD available to hunt them.

    The most stupid thing is the dds cannot launch AS charges ahead ( with one exception, I think) . A dd should be able to target the depth charges 180º or even 360º, in ww2 the worst enemy of a sub was a dd, in this game, a sub can prey on dds at will with those underwater cruise missiles, and the dd little things can do to fight back... such a dumb mechanic !

    I mostly use BBs, and have had great success, sinking many subs using HE, and setting the secondaries on them...
    HE rounds have a "blast radius", and there is even a Captain skill, to make that radius larger...at the expense of something else...
    HE kills subs!!!

    All this is well and good, but being in a BB and getting pinged from beyond you ASW plane range is stupid. I can see the ping origin and not reach it. I burn my damagecon for first lock and now a whole new set of homing torps!!!! thats Got Damm ridiculous. I was on top of a sub with a Fletcher it took 11 depth charges to put him down. So much for the DD counters subs.

    In a BB i'd rather deal with a sub than a Nakhimov or Haku dedicated to sinking me.
    But i'd rather deal with any other CV than a sub.
    And that's with tier 8 subs.
    Also DDs get the shortest stick here with ship mounted DCs.
    Nothing more fun than having to charge into an enemy you can't see that can shotgun you dead with 2 torps that go 70 knots.
    Might try open water gunboating agaisnt a thunderer too at this point.

    I had a cachelot ping me (undetected U-boat, no prior detection or pings sent by me) twice whilst I was undetected and there was no submarine surveillance or hydro on at all. The commander skill says it gives position away when an ACTIVE sub surveillance is on. So this cachelot guy hacking?

      Pinged you by guess or you were previously spotted and he got a lucky ping. You can see where a ships ping is if they dont damage con it

      The submarine hydrophone doesn't tell you you're spotted (because you aren't), but shows your silhouette to the sub every couple of seconds. It's very easy to ping a ship by silhouette especially if you don't change speed or direction.

      @@bobbybolivia9304 correct. That's the one that comes off cool down after 30 or 45 seconds or something. It's mainly useful for hunting destroyers or ships sitting in smoke. It's really the main weapon against destroyers, since subs can't see DDs from periscope until they are 2ish km from them.

    I take it that if a sub is at periscope depth there is absolutely no point trying to shoot it with your guns? The only time you can shoot is when the sub is fully surfaced, otherwise you have to do the lame boring and time wasting dance with depth charges?

    oh, yes, if you play a CV (yeah, of course no one does that :) ) and you spot a sub without other enemy ships close by, just drop some fighters on the sub. Their AA is normally abysmal, so, for the next 1-2 minutes, if the sub does not dive, it will stay spotted.

    I got lucky and sank two subs in one battle with my Tier VII german DD Maas yesterday.
    If you use depth charges, try to charge the sub from the side if possible, since it cannot fire at you. Also try to close distance fast. Use damage control when the torps are close and evade. then DC the sub.
    I must add that I was lucky, but they are not as overpowered as they once were.

    Fundamentals yes.. But as long as the submarine got hands it's impossible to hit, since most at this point drops torps and pings while moving. When the ping in some instances is inacurate, it is a nightmare and you give up. I've seen pings from submarine views, and when it goes from on top to 5-600 m behind, it becomes extremely frustrating.
    With CV this is about to kill the game. That's why WG started with cross-server, and we see quite a few russians on the EU server.

    Simple, if i'm a sub, i'll just use long-range torps and just salvo them from outside detection range and run away BEFORE i get detected, while staying on the surface, like a DD.

    If you really really hate subs grind the German dd line they get Hydro to help spot them and drop boom booms on them

    Tbh. The subs make an equal impact on the game as a bb or a dd or a ca does. In good hands they can be deadly so can be a bb or a dd or a ca.

    Nice video what the song for the DD chase?
    I do not hate the adding of subs or carriers as this game seems to be based in WW1, and WW2 navies. And these are as much apart of navies as Battleships, cruisers, and destroyers.
    Thought I get the hate for them as the game is favoring them to heavy, the other ships have a hard time countering them. With planes some ships lack of AA guns, or the guns they do have got nerfed, and planes always getting a hit no matter what. For subs a lack of ships dedicated to countering them.
    Now none of this means get rid of them, just fix it. First I think they need to add a refit option for the ships that why players can put on AA guns or add more. For the planes always getting hits AA gun training to give ships a better hit chance to give both ship and plane an equal chance. The ships to shoot all aircraft down or the planes to hit.
    Second put in corvettes, frigates as they were in WW2 made to hunt subs. Also when a player uses one he gets a group of three ships to command. As sub hunting is never done by one ship. In WW2 the US navy for anti-sub work wanted three or more ships on a sub. This way subs are giving more to worry about and players who hunt them have a chance, with three ships under them.

    Of course, when homing torps were a thing, they often turned around and hit the ship that pinged (the sub that launched the torps) - make that a thing and see how many continue to play the cancers ... I mean subs. Not to mention that even before homing torps were common, there was already ways to negate the homing effect, again - this is apparently too complicated for anyone in Wargaming to comprehend (that means to understand). They already have 1940's subs doing 2020 subs speeds. There was a reason subs primarily attacked merchant ships as once they were discovered they were dead by any real military ships -they NEVER outran even the slowest BBs let alone DDs. They are just so fake and so unreal, let's just add UFOs to the game next. Subs biggest fears were planes, yet CVs have had almost zero effect on subs and planes called in over radio can only go a few feet from the ship - that makes so much sense. It makes us wonder if anyone in wargaming graduated the 3rd grade or has an IQ over 60

    Comment section has some pretty interesting take or maybe a lot of people are venting which is understandable. Great Training video and hopefully this helps a lot of the player base to help understand subs and make adjustments. It won't be easy but videos like this helps a lot.

    I think they need to do away with the homing torpedo's all together. Just make subs fire dumb torps like the rest of the ships in this game. That way your not burning a repair especially on ships that only have a few repairs available. To me WOW implemented subs all wrong. Biggest frustration in this game.

    One thing I would like to add. Since addition of submarines kind of changed a meta, team play is gonna be a key feature to counter them. Like playing the ships of certain classes supposed to work as sub counters (DDs, CL, CA, CV) the proper way:
    -Meaning no more smoke farming dmg on BBs while there's sub going around. Recently I had two games where DDs didn't counter sub passing less than 2km from them while sonar pinging other friendly ships, eventually leading to loss of heavy hitters or even loosing us the game. They had my support (CL/ CA) against any sudden threat from enemy DDs, just to be clear...
    -Using your gimmicks (smoke, hydro, radar) different way then before. DDs laying down smokescreens for CL/CA to get into detection range. Supporting your DDs chasing sub more active way, even tanking by making yourself easier target then friendly DD.
    -Using commands and chaining them (i.e: asking DD for help, then for smoke while pinging sub location on minimap based on sonar markers) to be effective in countering subs.
    -Using and paying attention to chat and minimap! And nutjobs have to unlearn spamming bs there, so important messages don't get lost.
    -Carriers paying attention to subs at surface or at periscope depth and spotting them or forcing them to dive (and hence perhaps loose vision) instead of going for easy targets rest of the team not endangered by sub can deal with.
    And there's more, but these are like basics gathered by me an utter noob in one year of playing this game. I was once chasing a sub on the map borders w my Halland just to prevent it from spottiing for itself and harrasing friendly ships, CV and sniper BB, literally doing almost no dmg the whole game except for during cap contest at the start of the match. And we won :)
    All we need is WG making RPF spotting subs including those underwater, and subs once again spotting each other at least while passing around each other at very close range like let's say 1km...

    another tips would be , if you run close to a underwater sub ( from the side) like it as been spotted and you arrive from the side from behind an island for exemple) try to stay on top of it. sure you take a risk that the sub want to surface and ram you, but as long as you stay above or in 2km around or even a bit more, the sub need to either surface/ periscope to launch dulmbfire torp. or back away to use the guided one from deepth

    now repeat the same dodges in a t6 or t7 BB and I will be surprised. I have only managed to shake off homing torps a couple of times in lower ties. have basically stopped grinding till I figure out whats going on.

    Thank you for this. I have no intention of ever playing a sub (nor ever sending WG a penny ever again. This IS a betrayal and I don't forgive). I have willfully ignored studying the counters as the half-life of that info has been about a week and the cycle repeated endlessly. Now is the time to figure out how to live with them.

    Just a footnote... This is how you defend against a dumb sub captain... A smart sub captain knows the way to work around this... It ain't rocket science....
