- Step by step instructions on how to create a Box and Whisker Plot in Excel 2010.
Note: This method doesn't work if the min, max, or any of the quartile values are negative.
Thank you Mr Reive. Very clear and helpful. I feel accomplished now that I have constructed my box and whisker plot for my Business Analytics class which compares the petrol and diesel prices in cents per litre.
Much appreciation. Well done.
THANK YOU!!! I could never have done this without you. Seriously. Thank you. Thank you. I wish I could express (the inability to hug you really detracts from my thank you) how valuable your video has been to my life this evening. Seriously. Thank you. Seriously.
THANK THE LORD YOU ARE HERE REIVE!! My statistics coursework would not have been the same without you!!!!
Thank you so much! The night before my maths assignment is due and our teacher literally just told us to "figure it out by ourself, not my problem," so this video has probably saved my grade! You have the clearest and most understandable tutorial on this so THANK YOU AGAIN!!
Every year I watch this for a particular graph I make and every year I am thankful for you
It is ridiculous that it takes this much work to make this plot in Excel but the video is totally logical and really helps work you through making a good looking box and whiskers plot
Thank you so much! Your tutorial has been the easiest to understand for people like me who is an English major! THANK YOU!!!!
Thank you so so much! I had an assignment for uni and had no idea how to do this or anything on excel. Your thorough explanation with your lovely american accent was amazing! Thanks heaps and heaps! :D
Thank you! This really helped me with my a level stats work! And I agree with the other people, excel needs an option for this!!
hi Mr. Reive, just wanted to say that this was really useful video! Although I struggled with creating a chart for something with more than 2 boxes. This was due to labelling each box using the legend - I just didn't have enough colours to label each one! I found perhaps a better way of doing it - if you right click on the chart and go to "select data", you can label each plot via the Y axis by selecting "Horizontal axis labels" and editing to fit each box. I hope this helps others in my situation in just tweaking what is otherwise a very useful video!!
Thank you!!! I couldn't have finished my maths assignment without this!! thanks a lot
THANK U A LOT!! I can never figure it out without this video. It is so helpful! Wanna give u a super hug for your brilliant video!!!!! And by the way your voice is quite nice!!
Thanks, but I actually figured out how to do it using your method. You can't do it in order, ie. min to Q1 to Median and etc..., but if you arrange the negative values from least negative to most negative then from least positive to most positive and then take the difference it works out nicely. Hope that helps someone else!
My God! this video saved my life! thank you so much for this useful video...!
This video was extremely helpful and I just wanted to thank you for putting the time and effort to make this tutorial. Again, thank you very much!
Nevermind, just saw another comment with the same question. Thanks for the video, super helpful!
Thanks alot, this is the first time i'm seeing this video, helped me alot, especially in my School Based Assessment
Miranda Phillips Another way to label the tests is to get rid of the ledged and use put the labels on the vertical axis. This will solve your problem because you can have a label for each test. At 12:10 in the video instead of removing the axis, double click it and type your labels in.
Thanks for the guide. Excellent Description.
Thank You that was pretty perfect. I have a mac running office 2011. Only difference was adding the borders. I did this by changing glow.
This was a HUGE help for my stats class. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the tutorial. You did a great job at doing a step by step instruction. Excel should add this function into to its graph options.
Thanks for the comment. I agree, Excel should have this as a graph type. Maybe they will add it in the future.
what an incredible tutorial, respect!
Thanks - you've made me a legend at the office. For a moment. But it was a good moment :-)
Thank you so much!!! Your video helped me with my project. God bless you!
THANK YOU!!!! Absolute life-saver. Really great and detailed tutorial. Easy to follow.
thx, helped me clutch up my stat final research project
thankyou! helped me a lot on my lab report
Thank you so much! This video was really helpful to finish our school math project :D
This is super amazing thank you for making this! It worked. It took forever but looks fantastic! Thank you so much!
This was so useful. I needed to know how to make these for my AP Stats project, and I couldn't figure out how.
Really great video! Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much for this video! You're a lifesaver
super useful! Thank you so much for the video! You helped me a lot for my maths assessment!
I finally got it. I went to "More Error Bar Options" and had use a fixed value error bar and type in the difference from Q1 to min and from Q3 to max.
Well that's 13 minutes of my life that I'll never get back...
Thank you so much for this video! It was so helpful to me to watch while I created my own for my course :)
thank u!!!! very helpful for my maths b assignment
Glad it was helpful. Thanks for the nice comment.
You could remove the legend then go to Layout->Axes->Primary Vertical Axes->Show default axes. You will see each plot numbered on the Vertical Axes. Click on the numbers, then right click & pick Select Data. Click on Edit above the numbers then select all of your names. The names should show up on the axes. Or remove the legend and use Textboxes, Go to Insert->Text Box and make a textbox for each name. I have seen it both ways, they both look good. Good luck.
I'm glad I could help. Thanks for the comment.
a lifesaver. truly thanks so much
umm... mine will not let me do error bars? I clicked on the purple then went to layout and clicked error bars then error with standard, nothing happened?
Same problem...any solutions?
nichole flores The Switch Row/Column button is disabled when the 2 columns of difference data are not on the same rows. For example if the differences for data A is in B1:B5 and the data B is in D9:D13. In this case excel can’t switch Row/Column. Move or copy both difference data to the same rows but different columns, like B1:B5 and D1:D5 and everything should be fine.
+Mr. Reive Thank you sooo much was stuck in there for awhile ..
Your a life saver
This is exactly what I wanted. Thanks for the video. It was of great help!
This was so helpful, keep up the tutorials, Thanks
you saved my life man, thanks
Glad it helped. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you sooo much! i needed this for my project and i couldn't figure out how to do it, this was just a life saver for me! :)
Glad it helped. Thanks for the comment.
great video! Thank you!
Saved my life, man!
Glad you got it to work. Thanks for posting the update.
Wonderfully helpful. I love you man.
I have seen this before. Try this it should get you to the same place. Select the purple bars like at 5:13, then select the "Error Bars" tab like I do but go to "More Error Bar Options" at the bottom of the menu. That will get you to 5:28 in the video.
Mines too,not getting the error bars
Kat Hope same my error bars dont work. is there any fix ??
yeah i got it to work but i honestly can't remember how i did it
+Failzord WoW after clicking on the error bar button, go to more error bar options, click on plus or minus. That should work
Yo....I even tried doing that ^ but it didn't work. It's not appearing at all :( *sighs*
it's a great video, thanks. I have a comment though... The error bars shouldn't go to the min and max values. The upper error bar should stop at most extreme measurement within the upper inner fence. The upper inner fence is calculated using Q3+1.5(Q3-Q1). The lower inner fence is Q1-1.5(Q3-Q1), and the error bar should stop at the smallest measurement within the lower inner fence. The way the video is recorded, it's impossible to have outliers, since the max and min are included in the box and whisker plot.
Yes you are correct, this method doesn't allow for outliers.
For others, here is a nice site that explains how to do a box and whisker plot with outliers in the data:

I love this video! Thanks for helping with my Maths SBA! :D
Thank you sooooo much for this video. Extremely useful.
Thanks helped a bunch
Brilliant tutorial, saved my ass in my Uni assignment, it kinda works with negative values as you can see where values are meant to be on the graph, but very difficult to show that information neatly, wonder if there's a proper way of doing it though
That is the control button on your keyboard of a PC, I'm not sure what it would be on a Mac. When you hold the control button down and select cells with your mouse you will add to whatever you currently have selected.
The only way that I can think of how to drop a line from a quartile value on the chart down to the axis is to use the line tool. Go to Insert -> Shapes -> pick line near the top. Now draw the line on the chart to where you want it. Right click on the line -> Format Shape to change the line color and other properties. But if you change the data you will have to redo the line. Hope this works.
You are the real mvp
Without holding any keys on the keyboard down select the first column of differeces, let up the mouse button, hold the Ctrl button down, select the second set of differences with the mouse, then let the mouse button up and the Ctrl button up.
Was a great help... Thank you! Meitaki Maata
WOW, THIS WAS SOOO HELPFUL! THANK YOUUUUUU
Thank you. That was very helpful.
vary good presentation, it is helpful
THANK YOU. Fantastic. Great help for my University protect.
okay thank you very much it really helped :)
i am working with excel 2007 and i was following all the steps correctly and everything was working fine but when i reached the step to insert the error bars i click the purple bar(i am working with one box&whiskers plot) and click the standard error bar thing. when i do this nothing happens.... any pointers?
oh and thanks for the quick reply :)
very useful, thanks a ton. i loved its magic.
Absolutely Brilliant
Thank you for the video, it was tremendously helpful. Can you show us how to make a box and whiskers plot with outliers? My data clearly has outliers, as observed with a scatter graph. I want these outliers to be made clear in the box and whisker plot.
Life saver.
Thanks! This really helped!
ok thanks alot i played around with it finally got it. thnx for your help
it seems like every time u answer me i have a next question...i hope I'm not bothering you too much.
for my data i found the quartiles and the min and max using excel's formulae. then i did those things manually(by hand) everything matched up except for Q1 (by excel-Q1=10.25 manually-Q1=10). the formulae i used to work it out manually was Q1 position =1/4(n+1) where n is the number of values i have.
any pointers or help?
Once you have the chart copied like I did at 12:18 then just go to your Word document, go to where you would like to paste the chart, then right click and paste. Pick one of the paste options that says "Embed Workbook" and the chart will print more clear and sharp.
so helpful!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks for the sharing!!! it helps me a lot!!!1
Great. Thanks, I'm sure that will help some people.
Yes you are correct, sorry. One of my students ran into this too. I updated the description to add your comment.
Thank you very much
Thank you. Very helpfull.
i was wondering how can you change the intervals on the bottom to what you would like
Thank you sooooooo much :)
AMAZING, thank you!
The Switch Row/Column button is disabled when the 2 columns of difference data are not on the same rows. For example if the differences for data A is in B1:B5 and the data B is in D9:D13. In this case excel can’t switch Row/Column. Move or copy both difference data to the same rows but different columns, like B1:B5 and D1:D5 and everything should be fine. Hope this solves your problem.
Thank you! Very easy to understand. Helped in the assignment and I put you in as a reference! :) Is there any way to compress the series 1?? I have no data in that section.
Thank you very helpful
thank you very much
I don't have a design tab to use to switch rows and columns. So I can't figure out what you are doing at 3:50. Please help! Thank you
Hey, this was a very useful video. I was trying to get a whisker plot done for ages , this seems a good start. I tried doing what you did. I have 6 colours instead of 5 !! I have an orange on side of blue. Would you please tell me why this happens? Thanks well in advance.
Show de bola meu amigo, matou a pau, muito obrigado !!!
I clicked on "Standard Error Bar" and the bars did not show up. How do I fix this? All my values are positive.
just awesome, thank you so much!!!!
Thank you, so much!
Awesome video! Question, it worked for me several times except when i got to a data set with a mix of negative and positive values. How do we handle those? I am actually making a box and whisker for a normal distribution. Thanks!
I tried setting my two min values from the video both to zero. Both charts updated with left whiskers that started at zero which is what should happen. You could try temporarily changing your min values to be something above zero, 5 or 10, then following the video. Then once you have the box and whisker plot complete go back and change the min values to zero and your charts should update correctly.
Thanks Aubrey.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
Thank you for the video! If you have 3 boxplots, what are you goiing to do with the colors?
