This video demonstrates how to create a boxplot (box and whisker chart) using Microsoft Excel 2016. Boxplots are used to analyze the distribution of scores in variables.
I've only ever created a boxplot manually and it can be very time consuming. This video has been really helpful in demonstrating how to perform the same function, only faster and with less errors. This will be really useful in the future.
WOW !! Thank you so much ! I have watched so many videos and none have explained in great detail like you did! You really helped me grasp this concept well!
Great explanation on box plots and how to create them in Excel. I did not understand how to interpret them previously. The IQR and understanding outliers was especially helpful.
Thank you so much. You instructions were so easy to follow and this is helping me a great deal in completing my stats finals project (Nyke shoe company).
So my friend borrowed my RUclips app to look up an excel tutorial and I’m listening in the background like “wow this guy sounds JUST like dr grande” and I look and of course it’s you! Too funny, didn’t realize you used to do excel tutorials!
Thank-you Dr Grande, I am not doing very well in my class. Your tutorial was easy to understand and I was able to create a template for later usage. Again Thank-you.
This video was helpful to create a boxplot in Excel, it is nice to be able to use both SPSS and Excel for this chart. This is an easy way to establish any outliers that may occur.
i came to find out how to create box plots in excel and realized your voice sounded familiar. Then i realized i watched alot of your videos on your case analysis, so thats cool.
Thanks for the very useful and clear explanation! As a non-statistics-guy, I only have one question left; why would one choose for the option "Including Median" or "Excluding Median", and what is the difference? Or in which case should I use "Including Median" and in which case "Excluding"?
For those wondering how to add axis titles for a box plot, heres how you do it: For horizontal axis just change the chart design to style 5 so it includes the x-axis titles. For vertical axis just go to chart design, add chart element, and add a y-axis title. Cheers.
Dr. Grande - thank you so much for all of your you tube presentations. Very clear and easy to understand. I have 12 data points over 6-week period to show on one graph (6 before weekly intervention assessment and 6 after weekly intervention assessment). How do I do this in Excel 2016?
Thank you very much. Didnt know it´s already included in excel 2016. Also thanks for the ouliers explanation, I was wondering just where did it came from. I suppose the graphics options allow us to include the critical values in the chart. I´ll keep digging.
Hello. Perfect video, helped me a lot. Although I have a question. What's the statistical/mathematical terminology for the transformation of each variable when fixing the outlier issue? Thank you.
they are definitely not there! I split my hard drive and have Windows 10 where I can run all of the charts. That would be the best thing to do. There are certain accessories that are not accessible on word, as well, on Mac
Hi Todd, Thank you for the wonderful video. I am applying this to my data and getting lowe outliers in the negative, which do not relate to the whisker this is because my IQR*1.5 value is becoming more than Q1 and similarly upper outlier cutoff also is a bit different (i.e. higher) the whisker top head. I checked the formulas, not sure why this is happening! thanks
when I create a box plot and thick the option 'mean marker', excel marks the mean on the plots with an 'X'. I want to change this mark, make it dashed line for example. But I could not find any option to change the marker. Do you know how I can do that? or is it possible to show the man with the line but not the median? Thanks
i also got a dot.... but i cant make it to change the min. line to the actual (0) line (you know what you explained at the end of the video, can u help me?
Thank you Dr Todd Grande. I have just completed my box and whisker chat for a single variable. How do I contact you to ask a direct question regarding interpreting my chat?
Is it possible that the oulier is a negative value?? or when i calculating the lower outlier i should add the abs() tool, in orden to give me the absolute number (without the signal) ?? Help plssss
Dr Grande, the tutorial is great. I followed the steps properly, but for some reasons the boxplot contains neither boxes nor whiskers, just colored point (x) corresponding to given data in the spreadsheet. I went through the formatting options, but there is not one making me boxes... Any ideas to solve the issue?
I really love the way you explained how to create a box and whisker plot in Excel. Very clear and straight to the point, and you provided all the needed information to understand not just the steps to make, but also the math behind them! Thank you!!
This is the #1 serial killer psychoanalysis and excel tutorial channel on RUclips
Going from excel tutorials to diagnosing serial killers in 6 years, and picking up almost 1 million subscribers along the way. Great job Dr. Grande.👋
Omg, Dr Grande! I can't believe I'm learning the box and whisker plot in Excel from Dr Grande himself.
I honestly can't thank you enough for this simple yet very effective and NECESSARY video!!!!! Keep em coming!
I've only ever created a boxplot manually and it can be very time consuming. This video has been really helpful in demonstrating how to perform the same function, only faster and with less errors. This will be really useful in the future.
The simplest box plot explanation I have seen in my life. Thanks Dr Grande
One of the best tutorials I have ever seen. Thanks champ
it was really fantastic, I completely understood and right after that I drew my Boxplot easily , thanks so much Todd
You are quite welcome -

THE BEST boxplot tutorial, hands down!! You're saving my life over here
This video helped a lot, Business statistics has been kicking me around so far.
I’m not alone. Ugh. Thank goodness.
You just turned my world around Todd - thank you.
This video was very helpful in creating a box plot. Also, calculating the variables effectively explained the outliers for both columns.
GPA lifesaver. I appreciate your contribution to the digital world.
Great explanation on box plots and how to create them in Excel. I did not understand how to interpret them previously. The IQR and understanding outliers was especially helpful.
Thank you for your simple, and effective explanation of this process. I appreciate this
Very helpful, I found this very quite easy to understand although I had fears at the beginning. Thank you so much!

so helpful so simple so perfect! thank you
Thank you so much for this video Dr. Todd.
This helped with my data assignment, thanks.
exactly what I needed! Thanks!
Thank you so much! I literally don't know how to use excel properly but this tutorial helped me with my report :)
Thank you, just what I needed!
You're welcome!
Still relevant and amazingly easy!! Thank you
Awesome! I never really knew how to interpret a chart like this.
Thanks for the very useful and clear explanation! As a non-statistics-guy, I only have one question left; why would one choose for the option "Including Median" or "Excluding Median", and what is the difference? Or in which case should I use "Including Median" and in which case "Excluding"?
Thank you for this one, was really helpful, you don't perhaps have something on creating a geographic chart with data on excel, thanks
Really informative. Thanks Todd!
dude i love you

A true lifesaver! Thank you for your video
Excellent, thanks. Excel doesn't describe outlier definition in their documentation, so this is much appreciated.
You're welcome, thank you for watching -
Thank you so much this was very helpful! Is there a way I can make the boxplots horizontal?
This helped me a lot. Thank you!
Thx so much sir, it's very helpful.
Fantastic explanation, thank you so much!
Well explained. Thank you.
Awesome video, thanks.
Thanks so much for the tutorial. It is very clear and very helpful for me. Really appreciate it. Thanks

Thanks for the explain....
Extremely Helpful
Great stuff - thanks a lot for the help!
You are quite welcome -
Wow, you honestly freaked it with this tutorial. Incredible accuracy, no need to waste time looking up other videos.
Can I give you like 5 subs?
hello, I only have three sets of data, (triplicate readings), can i still use this to check outliers?
thanks a lot for this awesome video
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!
So helpful, thank you!
Thank you so much for your Video! It's very useful. I hope that you will generate more useful videos like this one.
You're welcome!
Thank you Dr. Todd!
You're welcome!
At first box plots were rather confusing for me, but this video helped explain the steps in which they are used for.
Whoaah, i didnt think i would find a statistics tutorial from Dr. Grande lmao
Thank you. Can we use the calculated data instead of the raw data to have the box plot?
Thanks for your help
Very helpful, thanks!
You're welcome - thank you for watching.
Thanks man, really helpful
You're welcome. Thanks for watching.
Hello. Perfect video, helped me a lot. Although I have a question. What's the statistical/mathematical terminology for the transformation of each variable when fixing the outlier issue? Thank you.
Is it possible that Excel 2016 on Mac does not have Statistics Charts? I've been looking at all the charts in the Insert menu and can't find it...
I've been having the same problem
I think so. I have Excel 2016 for Mac, too, and I can't find it either :-(
they are definitely not there! I split my hard drive and have Windows 10 where I can run all of the charts. That would be the best thing to do. There are certain accessories that are not accessible on word, as well, on Mac
It seems like that is something that should have been mentioned ugh thanks for the info I will stop looking
it is now available in the recent update
thank you very much for your clear explination
Nice one Todd 👍🏽👍🏽
Thank you!

Do you have a video on how to make the boxplot horizontally?
tank you for teaching me how to use excel, i reely laik yoe
You're welcome!
so what is the standard deviation for this data set, is it the values difference between the top and bottom fo the whiskers ?
Dr. Grande doing Excel Statistical Graph Tutorials (ESGT-Grande) is the new FDA Standard Quaalude Equivalency (SQE). *said w/love*
is it possible if you could demonstrate outliers with the standard deviation method.
Help plssss
Could you incorporate a dotplot with these box and whisker plots? Along with standard deviation?
How do I create a plot with different x-values instead of just the "1" that shows up?

The lower fences and upper fences created by the excel is not the same with the fences that I manually calculated. How can I change this?
but how to add the X axis label to this box plot?
the drop down values did you create them yourself or they are part of the functions? i'm using excel 2010 and i couldn't find the values.
